An intricate mix of international and medical intrigue

“After the Fall” by Patricia Gussin is an intricate mix of international and medical intrigue involving an antagonist with no conscience and a protagonist with an overactive one. FDA project manager Jake Harter, an ex-marine, goes around offing people in his obsessive pursuit of Addie, the beautiful Iraqi microbiologist, while Dr. Laura Nelson suffers not only from injury resulting from the fall on ice that begins the story, but also from past secrets that threaten to undo her family life.
The story format is a series of brief chapters, switching back and forth between the various characters as the plot thickens. In the process, Gussin certainly manages to build the suspense to an unbearable level. This is unquestionably one of those books that a true thriller fan will be loath to put down.
“After the Fall” is the fourth novel in the “Laura Nelson” series. Since I have not read any of the others, I can’t offer any reasonable comparison. As a standalone novel, it offers some interesting insights into the world of Big Pharma and the process of developing, testing and marketing new drugs. However, I will freely admit that I do not fully accept the premise that Saddam Hussein’s government really was developing biological weapons for terrorist purposes. But perhaps other readers will disagree with my perspective. In any event, this story – although at times there seem to be aspects of “Keystone Cops” as the local police, FBI, CIA and DIA are crossing paths in trying to deal with Harter’s depredations and Addie’s naïveté – is definitely a fast-moving thriller.

"After the Fall," by Patricia Gussin, opens in 1992. At a meeting in Philadelphia's Four Seasons Hotel, the chairman of the board of Keystone Pharmaceutical asks a forty-eight year old surgeon, Dr. Laura Nelson, to join his company as vice-president of research. The chairman admires Dr. Nelson, who has advocated for Immunone, a promising new drug that she believes will save countless lives if it were to win FDA approval.
The author packs an abundance of murder and mayhem into this thriller. Quite a few people meet untimely ends. Furthermore, a beautiful and brilliant woman with a PhD in biochemistry, Adawia Abdul, finds herself in a no-win situation involving her profession, her traditional family in Iraq, and her American lover. Adding to the tension, the plucky and courageous Laura decides to deal with skeletons in her closet that she has kept hidden for decades. There is a glimmer of joy, as well, when a wonderful man whom Laura has known for years declares his love for her.
Gussin's prose is, for the most part, serviceable. In addition, the author generates a fair amount of suspense and is knowledgeable about medical and pharmaceutical matters. Unfortunately, she is less adept at crafting a novel with depth and nuance. A busy and muddled plot, stilted dialogue, and thinly developed characters keep this book from earning an enthusiastic recommendation. "After the Fall" will appeal to adrenaline junkies who value non-stop action over sophistication and realism.

Laura Nelson’s career took a drastic turn due to an accident; she went from surgeon to Vice President for Research for a pharmaceutical company. Her mission is to gain approval of a new drug. However, Jake Harter from the Food and Drug Administration stands in Laura’s way. Adawia Abdul is the Iraqi scientist that created the drug. When and if the drug is approved Adawia will be returned to Iraq to head the bioweapon program for Saddam Hussein. The Iraqi henchmen want Adawia back asap but Jake Harter refuses to allow that to happen. He is infatuated with the doctor and will stop at nothing to prevent her return to Iraq, even murder.
This is the fourth and last book in the Laura Nelson Series. This is the first book I’ve read by author, Patricia Gussin. I now know what her many fans already knew: she is a superb writer, her books are exciting thrillers, filled with suspense, complex plots and multi-dimensional characters. This is one of those books that once you start it you won’t want to put it down. The author style is short chapters. I love to read medical mysteries and this is one of the best. Fans of Robin Cook, Tess Gerritsen, and Patricia Cornwell will enjoy Patricia Gussin’s books.
