Book of the Dead, by Greig Beck

And the earth shall fall before they rise.…

Massive sinkholes are opening across the country―each larger and deeper than the previous one. First the family pets go missing, and anyone living near one of the pits is reporting strange phenomena―the vibrations, sulfurous odors and strange sounds rising up from the stygian depths. Then come the reports of horrifying "things" rising from the darkness.

When the people start disappearing, the government is forced to act. A team is sent in to explore one of the holes―and all hell breaks loose―the Old Ones are rising up again.

From the war zones of the Syrian Desert, to the fabled Library of Alexandria, and then to Hades itself, join Professor Matt Kearns, as he searches for the fabled Al Azif, known as the Book of the Dead. He must unravel an age-old prophecy, and stop Beings from a time even before the primordial ooze, which seek once again to claim the planet as their own. Time is running out, for Matt, and all life on Earth.

"Shrug"
By Kindle Customer
So, I read Beck's first book in 2011 when I was hungry for good, cheap monster books on my new fangled kindle and whoa! It was good! The vast majority of monster books out there are trashy and ill edited with few exceptions like "Beast" and "Meg" and my childhood favorite "the relic" and what was on the kindle was either the same price for a paperback (for the "name" writers) or barely worth the ¢.99 (for the newbies). Greig Beck was a spark in a bog and I've enjoyed all of his novels.... until this one. I'm sorry I just prefer HG Wells to HP Lovecraft. Metaphysical In the real world is to close to religion and that frankly bores me (now, before calling me Hitler know that I like fantasy books like lord of the rings or wheel of time but I like when it begins and ends in worlds far from this one) Up til this book his stuff is all science fiction/horror but not as dark as stephen king which makes it a fun, enjoyable, scary read without being to "thinky" (or emotionally distressing like King). So, while this book is obviously a love letter homage to Lovecraft I'd much rather prefer a return to the monster-esqe stories then more in this vein.

Showing Lovecraft some love ...
By J. Buckley
I first read H.P. Lovecraft's "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" when I was 12 or 13, and the epilogue, in which submarines lobbed torpedoes at mysterious underwater targets, always piqued my imagination. My youthful mind constructed a host of scenarios on which military might ran headlong into the Old Ones and their minions. In his latest novel, Greig Beck takes those youthful fantasies to their action-packed extreme. In Beck's latest page-turner, linguist Matt Kearns is conscripted by the feds into investigating a series of mysterious sinkholes which are appearing all over the globe. This investigation soon leads to Syria and a certain tome penned by a certain Mad Arab. From that point, Lovecraftian lore and Beck's typical pulse-pounding action sequences fuse seamlessly into one exciting, fast-paced read. There's no Arcadian, but an octopoid Old One does have a starring role. My one complaint is that, as if often the case with Beck's novels, the book seemed to end too soon, and left me wanting more! Oh well, at least that guarantees I'll be patiently standing in line waiting for Beck's next release ... I highly recommend this one to fans of military fiction, horror, and all points in between.

Beck has crafted an amazing tale filled with dark horror and violence
By Matthew Summers
I will admit I was excited when I first heard whispers (or should that be guttural squelching from shoggoths?) of this novel. Hardcore military adventure fiction... with Lovecraftian tones... oh hell yes! Sign me up and take my money! Did Greig Beck deliver on my excitement upon reading... is the Pope a Catholic? Of course he did!

Beck has crafted an amazing tale filled with dark horror and violence. The world building and pacing were superb, and the story was filled with squeamish terror and gut wrenching action from start to finish. His characters were well fleshed out, and I loved the reappearance of Kearns and Senesh in this story. Beck's exploration and use of the Cthulhu mythos was also well done, creating a deep sense of foreboding and terror deep within me as a turned page after page (probably didn't help that there were violent storms raging outside at the time! I literally could imagine Cthulhu peering down at me as lightning rippled across the sky behind him). I was grabbed from the first sentence and engrossed in the story until the very end. Even now I still find myself thinking about the possibility of the old ones. That's how I know that Beck has done a tremendous job... the story is lingering in my mind a week after reading!

As a homage to Lovecraft Beck has produced a work to be proud of. The best military horror I have read all year... and Beck's best work yet.

A must read for military horror and Lovecraft fans!
