The Eastern Ukraine Question (Tales of MI7 Book 4), by J. J. Ward

Some say Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service is riddled with misfits and losers. Alec Cunningham, Annabel Gould, Gina Fairburn, Phyllis Robinson and Ian Woodward have each experienced life in extremis and washed up subtly broken. Yet in 21st century, post-imperial Britain, they – and people like them - are all that stands between security and turmoil.

When a cabal of Russian oligarchs instigates unrest in the far east of Russia as the first stage of an attempt to unseat Vladimir Putin, Britain offers covert support in the form of these same five agents. The disturbances mirror those in Eastern Ukraine and, if pushed far enough, might persuade the Kremlin to retract its territorial interests in Donetsk, Luhansk and Zaporizhia.

However, once the operatives are shipped east, events take an unexpected turn. One by one, they begin to disappear.

Enter Grey Department’s John Mordred. Latter-day beatnik, loner, mystic, linguistic genius; by grudging consensus, MI7’s best agent. ‘Best’, that is, apart from one little flaw: an obstinate habit of obeying his conscience when the chips are down. He may be very, very good in a crisis, but fatally, he won’t necessarily defend the realm.

"There is no `UK' in Ukraine.'
By Grady Harp
Think through the suspense espionage thrillers that remain like phantoms in the brain and likely they will have been conceived by a British Isles author. Stepping as far back as the Sherlock Holmes style as presented by Scottish author and physician Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and including the imagination of Ian Fleming's James Bond, we now add another master of the medium in J.J. Ward. Ward writes romantic fiction, espionage thrillers, philosophy and poetry. According to a brief bio, `he believes that commercial genres have warped people's thinking about fiction generally. "I think they exist so readers can be easily manipulated and milked, and they also - in some of their forms - perpetuate sexism. Any good story has elements of most, if not all, genres." He hopes men & women will read, and enjoy, what he has written in equal numbers. He lives in Sussex and is a secondary school teacher by profession, and runs the school Amnesty International club.' And as this prolific writer has stated, `I want to make romance attractive to men, and guns-`n-muscles attractive to women. And get us all talking to each other again. About books ... and life. `

Offering some background helps when reviewing spy novels as it is better to let the reader know whether or not the suspense is warranted, and in the case of TALES OF THE MI7: THE EASTERN UKRAINE QUESTION it is. This volume is Book 4 of the Tales of the MI7 series and this reviewer has not only read all of them but has become committed to the series. For those who may have forgotten, MI7, the British Military Intelligence Section 7 (now defunct), was a department of the British Directorate of Military Intelligence. Part of the War Office, MI7 was set up to work in the fields of propaganda and censorship. To summarize the complex plot, best to turn to the author's synopsis: 'Some say Britain's Secret Intelligence Service is riddled with misfits and losers. Alec Cunningham, Annabel Gould, Gina Fairburn, Phyllis Robinson and Ian Woodward have each experienced life in extremis and washed up subtly broken. Yet in 21st century, post-imperial Britain, they - and people like them - are all that stands between security and turmoil. Enter Grey Department's John Mordred. Latter-day beatnik, loner, mystic, linguistic genius; by grudging consensus, MI7's best agent. `Best', that is, apart from one little flaw: an obstinate habit of obeying his conscience when the chips are down. He may be very, very good in a crisis, but fatally, he won't necessarily defend the realm.'

JJ Ward continues to create fascinating characters and even more extraordinary plots, and with the Ukraine front and center in the news at the moment, there could be no better time for JJ to release this superb story. Read, discover the intrigue, and spread the word. Grady Harp, February 15

The Eastern Ukraine ANSWERS... but not the ones you're expecting
By Miranda
Alright, so this book has characters. The main characters, especially Mordred the protagonist — with his subtle and yet oddly arcane ways — take up the main action, naturally. And they're great. Mordred is great. (And what's up with that name? So many associations... More Dread. Death (morbid). Mordor. Mordred the magician... haha)

Nuclear dread. Spy agencies. Check.

But where this book really shines is in the minor characters. It's hard to describe, but one of the best things about spy novels is when they take you around the world and back in a few short chapters, to all kinds of exotic locales. But most novelists use just some local color, maybe the name of a local dish of food, the sound of the muezzin's wailing in the distance, that kind of thing. Ward uses a bit of that here and there, naturally, (and effectively, I might add). But that's not what I loved about this book.

I really felt myself locking in when he describes the local PEOPLE. I mean, a place is just a place until it's inhabited by real human beings. And it's so hard to portray a real human being in just a few lines, even though that's what an author is tasked with when portraying minor characters.
Let me show you what I mean. Here's a somewhat random guy that Mordred meets on a bus, from Vladivostok (that's the easternmost port in Russia, facing Alaska... a pretty damn remote place, for those of you who don't know):

"The old man looked out of the window with glazed eyes as if he wasn't seeing Vladivostok as it was, but as it had been under Brezhnev or Kruschchev, in black and white, with only military personnel and Soviet officials on the streets and fabulous grey warships in the harbours. When they got to Willmont, he was assigned to a work-gang and given a shovel. He looked two centuries old and happy to be of use."

That last sentence, "He looked two centuries old and happy to be of use," is what we call economy of words, my friends. How much is expressed in just that sentence? The man's history, his character, and his current outlook, and how his own personal history has formed his outlook. It even says a little about how Soviet Russia used to be.

So that's just one little example, but here's the thing. This book is FULL of moments like that. I never felt so transported by a spy book like this before.

I think that's what people miss. Yes, this book has bombs and planes and international intrigue and double crossing. But those things never come to life in most spy books because they're just offered up one after another.

In "The Eastern Ukraine Question," the intrigue and double crossing feels real because it's mixed with real humanity and flavor.

Don't get me wrong... it's also got choice moments like "The good thing was, they didn't have a lot of spare time; they had a world war to start. Two hours. A hundred and twenty minutes, give or take." Yes... things get that tense in this book.

But you never feel like Ward is just filling out the blanks. I don't read many spy books anymore because it often seems like authors just read some headlines and write the same damn LeCarré plots that everyone else has written a thousand times. I'm really glad I gave this book a chance. After a few pages I realized I was reading a writer who really cared.

Overall, five star read. Are spy books actually getting good again? Seems so to me. I suppose I should read more of them. Hopefully Ward keeps writing.

And as for the ending... well... haha. I won't spoil it for you.

*SPOILER ALERT*

(It's good.)

Another powerful book of intrigue and deception in a series without even one weak link
By E.A. Gray
Let me begin by stating that I was overly excited to finally get book four of this series in my hands after such turbulent anticipation. Also, upon devouring the novel, all I can say is this is quite possibly the most complex and intriguing of the group thus far. It has a multifaceted new plot with Russian intrigue and deep discussions about political issues that are a metaphor for current events. After my thrilling adventures with Gavin in book three it’s been a complete treat getting to know Mordred and the coterie of new characters that orbited around him.

Outside of Mordred, an unorthodox individual with a calculated insouciance and gravitating presence, I also really fell for Maggie; A bang-up ball-crusher of a woman with wit and grace to boot. Their scenes together in the initial car chase or dealing with a lascivious driver bent on inflicting harm were two memorable scenes that easily come to mind. Also, his admission to her while lying in bed at Yulyanov’s compound was such a subtle and unexpected kick. The antagonists are varied and distinct, with the oh-so-vivid descriptive details of their characters that I’ve come to expect from the author.

In summation, this is another master class performance from a writer that radiates a command of the English language with very few contemporaries. If you like intrigue along the lines of Le Carre and Ludlum from someone that can stand beside them as a peer, you shouldn’t miss this series.
