The City of Blood
There's art to die for, and there's art to kill for
Frédérique Molay's Paris Homicide Series is full of "twists, turns, and a roller coaster of a ride." Perfect for lovers of police procedurals.
When a major Parisian modern art event gets unexpected attention on live TV, Chief of Police Nico Sirsky and his team of elite crime fighters rush to La Villette park and museum complex. There, renowned artist Samuel Cassian is inaugurating the first archeological dig of modern art, three decades after burying the leftovers of a banquet. In front of reporters from around the world, excavators uncover a skeleton. Could it be the artist’s own son? And does that death have anything to do with the current string of nightclub murders by the “Paris Butcher”? On the site of the French capital's former slaughterhouses, the investigation takes Nico and France's top criminal investigation division from artists' studios to autopsy theaters and nightclubs in hopes of tracking down the murderer who has turned this Paris park into a city of blood. This police procedural set in France is "brilliant," "vivid," and "riveting."

“Molay has the rare skill of producing just the right tone, without clichés and with subtle humor. Magical, written by a master.” -Aventure Litteraire
"Another superb book in the Nico Sirsky series of books written by Frederique Molay and beautifully translated as always by Le French Books. The books are so evocative of Paris, a city I know well and revisit every time I read a book as good as this one... The writing flows, story and characters are enthralling as are the police procedures and the way they are described." ―5-star Netgalley review

"Frédérique Molay can give the writers of CSI and all police procedurals shows a run for their money. In The City of Blood , Ms. Molay channels Bones, the Fox hit series about forensic anthropology....The mystery aspect of the book will keep the readers on the edge of their seats; yet, it is Frédérique Molay’s stunning sense of physical details that make everything come alive! The book transported me to Paris – the sight, the sound, the smell; in my mind’s eye, I was in the French capital. Such is the power of Frédérique Molay’s words." ―Marienela

Review
“It is a handsomely written and wonderfully translated Parisian police procedural that also will prowl your mind…The ugly parts are appalling, but Molay has the prowess to touch lightly upon them before exploring the horror seeping into the hardened police ranks.” -Durango Herald (The 7th Woman)
“The 7th Woman is a taut and terror-filled thriller. Frédérique Molay navigates French police procedure with a deft touch, creating a lightning-quick, sinister plot with twists and turns that kept me reading late and guessing to the very end. Inspector Nico Sirsky is every bit as engaging and dogged as Arkady Renko in Gorky Park.”
–New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni (The 7th Woman)
“Molay uses meticulous police procedure and forensics to bolster gripping scenes of terror. Let’s hope more installments from this series cross the ocean soon.” –Booklist (The 7th Woman)
“The 7th Woman blends suspense and authentic police procedure with a parallel tale of redemption. Well-drawn characters and ratcheting tension won’t let you put the book down. I read this in one sitting.” – Paris mystery writer Cara Black (The 7th Woman)
"A slick, highly realistic, and impeccably crafted thriller. Likable characters, outstanding pacing, and unexpected plot twists that keep readers guessing throughout…an extraordinary, hard-hitting novel.” - ForeWord Reviews (The 7th Woman)
From the Author
“In this book, I wanted to grab the readers right from the start and not let go. The idea for the plot came to me after reading an article about artist Daniel Spoerri digging up the remains of one of his ‘tableaux pièges’―a hundred or so guests were invited to an outdoor banquet that was then buried to be exhumed many years later. I immediately imagined the banquet and a body being found. Then as usual, I got started questioning specialists, including my favorite coroner. With every book, I really want readers to discover something they don’t know.”

Fast pace, riveting
By Melinda
Frédérique Molay strikes again with another exciting installment in this thrilling series. With vivid descriptions of Paris, plenty of historical facts along with intricate police details and procedures all creating a fast paced riveting narrative. Molay’s narrative ‘involves’ the peruser with ample knowledge and affecting characters, you feel as if you’re investigating along with Nico Sirsky and his team.
I am a huge Nico Sirsky fan, I appreciate the way Molay brings both professional and personal facets of Sirsky to light. He’s a consummate officer of the law, a loving father, and an emotional and loving partner to Caroline as well as a devoted son and brother to his family. He’s dimensional, flawed and flawless, you will find yourself invested in him without question.
Molay’s style is casual with potency keeping your attention at a whip fast pace. Once again excellent translation on Jeffrey Zuckerman’s part, you feel nothing is lost, the fluidity of prose solid. Another fine meshing of author and translator with Molay and Zuckerman.
Looking forward to more from Molay and her compelling cast of characters. Don’t let the fact this is a series deter you, each book can read as a standalone without missing a beat. I do suggest having all the books available, you’ll want to continue with Sirsky and all the happenings.

The City of Blood
By S Riaz
This is the third novel in the Paris Homicide Series, following on from “The 7th Woman” and “Crossing the Line.” As in previous books, the central character is Inspector Nico Sirsky, although other members of his team are becoming familiar, such as David Kriven. Also, as well as the crimes investigated in the novels, personal relationships and issues are also a large part of the storyline.
Thirty years ago, a performance artist called Samuel Cassian, invited many influential people to a banquet. The remains were buried, to be unearthed thirty years later. However, along with the remains of a party, human remains are also unearthed. Inspector Sirsky is called in to investigate whether the remains are that of the artists son, who disappeared a week after the banquet and who has never been found. To complicate matters, Nico’s mother is suddenly taken to hospital, while there are a string of murders – all of young men, whose bodies are mutilated.
There are a lot of things I like about the Paris Homicide Series – including the setting and the way the storylines are tied together so well. The author keeps up the pace, to make the series exciting and realistic. As always, though, Nico’s relationship with Caroline is a little cloying at times and – although it is obviously central to his character – it just seems too intense and, really, rather trying at times. That said, once Nico leaves the bedroom and heads out to the street, the story steps up. Although Paris is obviously very close geographically to England, there are differences that I was unaware of; such as the statutes of limitations for criminal cases. Despite my reservations about the series, I am sure that this is one I will follow and I hope the author continues to build up the roles of other members of the Homicide Squad and perhaps leave Caroline to tend to her patients, while Nico deals with the crime.

1980s Modern Art & Death in Paris
By Sharon G. Mensing
The press gathers as a major modern art project from the 1980s is about to be revealed. A dinner tableau was buried by the artist Samuel Cassain in Paris' old slaughterhouse district with the plan to open it up to acclaim 30 years later. As the shovels dig, a body is found, the body of Cassain's son, also an artist, who went missing and was assumed to have disappeared to a new life in America at just about the time of the tableau's interment. While Chief of Police, Nico Sirsky, and his team are in the process of determining that the body is that of Cassain's son, a number of murders take place in Paris that seem to be linked to the 30 year old death. The ties between what is eventually determined to be the artist's murder in the 80s and recent murders become stronger and stronger as the investigation continues.
At the same time that he is dealing with this complex investigation, Sirsky is also dealing with his mother's hospitalization and critical condition. He worries about his mother and re-examines his relationship to her ardent Russian Orthodox religion. The book is written in chapters that alternate between the murders, the police investigation, and Sirky's family life. The short-chapter (some chapters less than even a page) structure of the book keeps the reader engaged and moving through THE CITY OF BLOOD quickly.
This book is full of characters, and most are not well developed. It becomes very difficult to keep track of the different policemen, especially when names as similar as Maurin and Moumen are used to distinguish them. Many pages include nearly a dozen different characters interacting, and not the same dozen throughout the book. There is little characterization to help the reader develop images to match with the names. Although Sirsky is the main character, even he is not particularly well developed. Perhaps this is because this is the third book in the series; if readers have read the first two books there is a greater likelihood they will have come to know Sirsky already. The missing sense of character is exacerbated by the author's tendency to reveal information through dialog. The characters are constantly talking to one another, and I found it difficult to keep track of the relationship between the characters as they spoke.
Some of the landmarks in Paris make appearances in the book, and this helps place the book geographically. However, just as the human characters don't become real to the reader, Molay does not transport the reader to the city. The book is translated from the original French, so I imagine that the author did not feel it necessary to build the culture of the city for natives. But reading this as an American, I can envision the action taking place in nearly any city (minus the aforementioned landmarks). The author occasionally takes excursions into the past, filling the reader in on the history of an area, but this does little to create atmosphere.
All in all, THE CITY OF BLOOD was a quick read made interesting because of the ties to modern art. But it does not have me rushing out to dig into the back story from the previous two books in the series.
