When university professor Markus Thorsen reads these words from the love of his life, Marisa, he abandons his work and flies to war-torn Peru, where government forces are battling a brutal insurgent organization known as the Shining Path. You know, the type of sigh you emit after you've finished a book that has left you with a deeply satisfying feeling of having read a really, really great book. Both a sigh of satisfaction and a sigh of regret that the book is done. . . Anyone who loves to read thrillers, political intrigue, or romance novels will enjoy this book. I was sad when I finished this book, and look very much forward to reading more by this author in the future.

About the Author
Dr. David C. Edmonds is a former Marine, Peace Corps Volunteer, academic dean and Senior Fulbright Professor of Economics with long experience in Latin America. He grew up in south Mississippi and Louisiana and studied at L.S.U., Notre Dame, Georgetown and American University in Washington, DC.
He has authored, co-authored, edited or ghostwritten nine published books and numerous academic articles. His first book, Yankee Autumn in Acadiana, won the literary award of the Louisiana Library Association. His current book, Lily of Peru, is the recipient of an International Latino Book Award for fiction. the Royal Palm Literary Award of the Florida Writers' Association and the Silver Award of Readers Favorites. Lily of Peru is also won a Latino-Books-Into-Movies Award of Latino Literacy Now and is also available in Spanish asLirio del Peru.
His second romance thriller, The Girl in the Glyphs, also won a Florida Writers' Association Royal Palm Literary Award.

No matter what is going wrong in your life, you have NOTHING on this guy.

“Lily of Peru” is a deceptively tranquil title for the wild ride readers are in for when they pick up this new novel by David Edmonds. The intense colors of the eyeball jarring cover should be a warning: Pass on this book if you expect to get a good night’s sleep. Chances are good you will still be reading when the alarm goes off.
Main character Markus, a mild mannered university professor, up for a promotion and recently divorced, wants one simple thing: to be reunited with his hot, mysterious soul mate, Marisa, who is someplace in Peru, doing God-knows-what. But it doesn’t matter, Markus will find her, will bed her, and all will be right with the world.
Or not. From page ONE, all hell breaks loose. Let me count the ways: In no particular order, Markus is arrested, assaulted, tried by a kangaroo court, roughed up by soldiers, hospitalized, shot at by weapons of every caliber, embarrassed when his love poems are printed in Peruvian newspapers, mistaken for a terrorist, seduced by any number of women, accused (accurately) of murder, chased by nasty, heavily armed people on all sides of the political fence, forced to disguise himself as, incredibly, a Danish tourist, becomes an unwilling recruit of the Peruvian guerrillas, flees to the Andes, throws in with a DEA agent, flees from the combined forces of both the army, the rebels, drug runners, hostile Indians, and his lover’s husband, who is the least of his problems.
But wait! There’s more! Somehow, along the way, he picks up a parrot as a companion and ally. Oh, did I mention that he also loses his house in a forclosure, his bank accounts are frozen by the FBI, he gets fired from his university job, he speaks Quechuan, he fakes his own death… and finally, FINALLY…NO! I’m not going to tell you whether he gets the girl. You gotta read the book.
But, in the epilogue we are told that some underground publisher gathers up all his bad love poetry and produces a thin volume called “Lily of Peru.” So that’s good, right?
No kidding. All this stuff happens to one guy. Read the book. You won’t be sorry.

A Riveting Thriller with a Somewhat Misleading Title

Don’t be fooled by the sweet-and-gentle-sounding title. This is a hard-edged thriller that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until the very end. Professor Markus Thorsen has almost all he wants in life: a good position teaching in a prestigious university and the opportunity to advance—he’s in line to be named dean. But the one thing he lacks is Marisa, the love of his life. She’s in Peru, and he’s gone there to get her and bring her back to the states. He met Marisa when he served in the Peace Corps many years earlier, has loved her ever since, a love she returned but circumstances prevented their marriage then, and she later married someone else. Now she has left her husband and is eager to divorce him and marry Markus. But Markus will find that extricating her from Peru will not be the simple task he anticipated but will thrust them both into terrible danger. The book takes place during the troubled presidency of Alberto Fujimori, when uprisings placed the Peruvian capital, Lima, in a state of siege, and the Shining Path guerrillas were ravaging the countryside. Caught up in the insurrection, and used by both the government and the guerrillas, his life constantly at risk, Markus refuses to abandon his desperate search for Marisa even knowing it can cost him his position, his reputation, and very likely his life. Readers will have a hard time putting this book down. Like his protagonist, the author served in the Peace Corps in Peru, and his own experiences and familiarity with the country along with meticulous research make this story ring with authenticity and believability. So why was it given the title of Lily of Peru? Read it and find out!

A Page-turning Thriller (five stars)
This is the best page-turner I've read in months. The year is 1992. A brutal war is going on between the Peruvian government and a bizarre terrorist organization called the Shining Path. Into this fray goes Markus, a mild-mannered University of South Florida professor, who flies to Peru to take home the woman he's loved since he was in the Peace Corps--Marisa with the long dark hair and blue eyes, an American who's unhappily married to a Peruvian. She's supposed to waiting in the hotel where they rendezvous for their trysts. Instead he finds a raspy-voiced general with a subpoena and the startling accusation that Marisa is a member of the Shining Path. Worse, she's the mistress of the terrorist leader—or so the general claims—and he wants Markus's help in bringing her to justice.
Anyone else might have given up and run for the border. But not this professor. No way is Marisa a terrorist. His determination to find her gets him followed, roughed up, dragged before a commission investigating terrorism, and threatened with arrest. He even kills in self-defense. But on he goes, fleeing from the dangers of Lima to haunted Inca ruins and on into the mountains, where he inadvertently links up with terrorists who think he's on their side.
Bullets fly. Things explode. Markus is banged up. He's photographed with terrorists, and just like that, he goes from respected university professor to the second most-wanted man in Peru. Things go south for him at his university as well. But in Peru, he becomes a folk hero for those with those with anti-government sentiments. He's Romeo, the man who gave it all up for the love of a woman.
This book has it all—love, betrayal, helicopter escapes, Inca mysticism, a DEA agent, and a hot bedroom scene or two. I won't give away the ending. Suffice to say it's as thrilling as the rest of the story, with a twist or two. If it's ever made into a movie—and it should be—I'm nominating Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lawrence for the roles of Markus and Marisa.
