In the village of Steynham St Michael, the old Strict and Particular Chapel is, at last, undergoing renovation, to the delight of the local inhabitants, who believe it will prove useful as a tourist attraction for the village. The renovations, however, have been dogged by the sightings of mysterious hooded figures, and tributes of flowers, left here and there on the site.
The newly painted interior is then found defaced by a mysterious message in red paint, and this last prompts a call to the police. DI Falconer and DS Carmichael of the Market Darley CID make an initial visit, and believe that the unexplained events at the Chapel may be the work of a small cult, believed to originate from the college in Market Darley.
When a new DC, on secondment, arrives, Falconer immediately sends him undercover as a student, spending his own time trying to lay his hands on a local drug dealer.
Then, a body is found on the stone altar table in the Chapel, and events begin to spiral out of control.

About the Author
Andrea Frazer is married with four grown-up children, and lives in the Dordogne with her husband Tony and their six cats. She has wanted to write since she first began to read at the age of five, but has previously been busy raising a family and working as a lecturer in Greek (she has a Fellowship Diploma in Greek) and teaching music. Apart from writing, Andrea continues to teach music, and now also teaches French to expatriates. Her interests include playing several instruments, reading, and choral singing with two choirs.

Harry Falconer series is a good read

I like mysteries set anywhere in the British Isles and especially those set in small English villages as is this series. Detective Inspector Harry Falconer is in his late 40's, unmarried and very much like an "old maid". Then (a few books before this one), DS Davey Carmichael is assigned to Falconer as his assistant. The two could not be any more different. DS Carmichael is married (to a young woman he meets in an earlier book), two step-sons whom he adores and they adore him and simply loves every minute of life. The longer the two are together, the more one loves the both of them. They each take and give something to the other. Carmichael's family becomes the family Falconer never had (even though Falconer likes getting back home to his quietness and his 4 cats). All of the characters in this series are extremely likeable. As is the case in most English mysteries, it is a bad guy who is murdered so the reader is not upset. The writing of Ms Fraser is good, the characters are people you would like to know, and the plots are believable (only one of these series, Murder at the Manse was, in my opinion not good). I would recommend that you begin with the first book in the series since the ongoing characters have evolved a great deal as the series progresses. If you like English mysteries, good writing, wonderful characters and some humor along with the solving of the crime, then I highly recommend you try this series (they are not expensive).

A great and very enjoyable series

I bought the first book in this series and went on to buy all of them. I enjoyed the progression of the relationship between the DCI and his DS. Great characterizations -- always interesting -- and the ending very often caught me off guard.... and I like that in a mystery. Good writing. Enjoyable characters. Not predictable.

A good middle of the road mystery.

I think this is probably a 3 1/2 star novel for me. I stress the "for me," because this sort of thing is such a subjective assessment. Andrea Frazer's main detective and his partner are rather an odd couple -- a device that has become rather tired. DI Falconer is an often grumpy, fastidious, middle-aged bachelor who still deals with nightmares of his childhood under the thumb of the very formidable Nanny Vogel. His Detective Sgt. is a sloppy, happy-go-lucky family man. I much prefer the DS. The author injects a dose of humor whenever possible, which is something that is often lacking in mystery novels. While I don't object to that at all, I feel that sometimes the humorous situations seem awfully contrived and occasionally ill-timed. Mind you, the laughs are a counterpoint to a series of murders associated with a secretive religious sect. As I say, the light-hearted moments don't always work. Within the spectrum of British mystery novels, I'd place this novel pretty much in the middle of the road. It's not grisly, macabre, or wallowing in gritty realism. There is no profanity and any sex alluded to is not explicitly described. It's sort of a Midsommer Murders kind of offering, set in a vanilla-flavored British village. The plot has a few surprises, though the prime suspect crumbles pretty quickly at the end. Still, it's an enjoyable enough read.
