Deep State (Anton Modin Book 1), by Anders Jallai

“Deep State is a terrific spy novel with a tremendously developed voice.”
Swedish National TV4

The most secretive organization in Sweden operates without any accountability to the people, hiding in the shadows: Deep State.
Anton Modin, a former Military Intelligence Special Ops officer, is obsessed with exposing his former employer and boss, the ever present and enigmatic Lieutenant Colonel Chris Loklinth. Modin lost loved ones, his two children and beloved wife, in the M/S Estonia ferry disaster in 1994. In great despair, even 14 years later, he still accuses his former department, Special Ops, to have had a part in the accident. What he doesn’t know is that since the end of World War II, Special Ops has been cooperating closely with both the American CIA and the British MI6; together these organizations represent the Deep State. Something deeply secret in the kingdom of Sweden.

Deep State offers the reader an abundance of detail about Sweden’s hidden past which casts its shadow well beyond democratic control even today. Owing to his profound knowledge of intelligence matters, Swedish bestselling author Anders Jallai has written a thriller rooted in contemporary Swedish and international intelligence history. The book is based on a true story.
Drawing heavily on his background in the Swedish Navy Seals, as a fighter pilot, and a commercial airline captain, Anders Jallai is now writing and researching full time. He has so far published five books in Scandinavia. Deep State is the first of his Anton Modin series.

“Anders Jallai’s superbly and skillfully written thriller is on my list of the top five Swedish thrillers published so far.”
Iwan Morelius, Swedish Academy of Crime Novels.

"Anders Jallai, a Swedish Frederick Forsyth, only better, should have a worldwide audience, while his choice of subject anchors him firmly within Nordic reality.”
Ragnhild Artimo, Forum for Economy and Technology, Helsinki.

“This is a book about men and for men, if you see what I mean. Anders Jallai is one of few who can create this kind of suspense.”
DAST Magazine

“Well-initiated and at times sensational depiction of the intelligence community.”
Svenska Dagbladet, Sweden’s leading daily.

“Written in an exciting, fast paced, and thought provoking way.”
Colonel Bo Hugemark, Royal Swedish Academy of Military Sciences.

“Jallai ‘s book is full of content and bloody action. The descriptions of the Stockholm archipelago are most attractive.”
P.G. Näss, Head of Swedish Security Service 1978-1987.

“It’s not only credible; it’s likely.”
Olof Frånstedt, Head of Swedish Security Service 1967-78.

About the Author
Anders Jallai, Sweden's Number 1 author of political thrillers, draws from his experiences with the Swedish Navy Seals and the Swedish Air Force in the final years of the Cold War. His background as a fighter pilot, a commercial airline captain, and a professional diver naturally flows into his edge-of-your-seat thrillers. His first three novels were originally published in Sweden. Now, Anders Jallai's successful political thriller series about former Special Ops agent Anton Modin will be available in English. The series begins with Deep State, originally published in Sweden in 2010.

Anton Modin, a middle-aged disillusioned former Special Ops agent who lost his wife and two kids in a ferry disaster, wants nothing more than be left alone in Grisslehamn in the northern Stockholm archipelago. However, that's easier said than done if you were involved with more secret missions than you care to admit. Sweden's Military Intelligence Special Ops was entrusted with keeping the peace between the East and the West during the Cold War, a time when Sweden's geopolitical position as an immediate neighbor to the Soviet Union created more than one highly classified incident. Cover-ups, sometimes at any cost and by any means necessary, blur the lines between truth and lie, threatening even Modin's moral compass as he navigates the Cold War secrets shared by Swedish Intelligence, British MI6, the CIA and Mossad.

In 2003, Anders Jallai received an award from King Carl XVI Gustaf for finding the Swedish DC-3 shot down in 1952, an expedition for which he was also named "Project Manager of the Year" in 2004. He also received an award from Fleet Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov, Commander in Chief of the Russian Navy, for finding a Russian submarine in the Baltic Sea in 1998. Anders Jallai is considered one of the most knowledgeable Cold War historians in Sweden, with a specialty in Stay Behind, Spy- and Black Operations. Please visit jallai.com for more information.

Great spy series
By Matthew
This is the first book in the series and one that follows an ex special ops officer and his new missions of being a spy. The main character is well developed it really goes into his past and how that makes him the person he is now. It makes you really want for the main character to succeed in his mission and hope he is able to uncover information that links his spec ops department to the death of his children and wife. This book is really great and has a James Bond type of feel to it.

Solid read
By Michael J. Pratt
A solid read and reminder of what it feels like, as well as what can happen to, for countries to be trapped between competing interests of their own reconciled against super powers: Russia and the US in this setting. Further, it sets up the tie-in from the cold war era to the present so fun stuff if you're into geopolitics.

Hats off !
By MacKenzie
This is suspense at it's highest level. Frederick Forsyth, John LeCarre and especially Tom Clancy; Eat your hearts out. There's a new guy on the stage. Set in the cold and desolate parts of Northern Europe this thriller have you on the edge of your pants all the way from the foreword to the back cover. Especially with parts of it being based on real events, it makes you wonder what else is there. Are there similar events covered up in our American Special Operations? Anders Jallai (Russian?) seem to command not only the intelligence lingo but also have a unique insight to how these organizations operate on both an official, but also unofficial (and shady) level. With the exceptions of the cheesy romantic passes, I highly recommend this book to anyone with the slightest interest in Military intelligence operations, Black Ops and a good deal of action.
