About the Author
"Dorian Box" is a college professor who has published seven nonfiction books, one of which was named an Amazon Editors' Favorite Book of 2014.
Psycho-Tropics is his first novel, set where he grew up in Hollywood, Florida. Kirkus Reviews calls Psycho-Tropics "[a]n engaging thriller with plenty of humor, good characterization, and a memorable villain ...." The book won a 2015 Writer's Digest Award in Genre Fiction.
In his regular life, Box has received awards for both teaching and research, and written thousands, possibly millions, of scholarly footnotes. He's been interviewed by National Public Radio, the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and many other sources.
As a hobby, he sings and plays guitar in a loud rock band that earns tens of dollars playing until 2 a.m. in smoky, dive bars.

A Twisted, Hilarious Mystery … with Heart

This book is kind of twisted, but also very funny and unpredictable. When a seven-year-old embalming expert and James Garfield, the twentieth president, play roles in solving the case, you know something different is up.
The blurb calls it a “mystery thriller” and it really is a combination of both. There’s a lot of action and the pages turn quickly, but it’s also very much a clue-based mystery. I found myself stopping frequently trying to fit together the pieces of a tragic night at a place called “Sugar Lake” and figure out what the heck all these strange characters were up to. I like to spot holes in plots, but couldn’t really find any in this story. It’s tricky, but tight.
My biggest surprise was that the book has HEART. In the middle of all the insanity is a sweet love story between Danny, the protagonist, and Sari that started when they were kids. In between cringing at the gruesome exploits of the “above-average” psychopath and laughing at “Fink,” Danny’s unstable lawyer, I had tears in my eyes in a couple of places reading about Danny and Sari. Star-crossed lovers? You have no idea.

Couldn’t Put It Down

This book drew me in from the first sentence. An accountant has to die just because he’s the “most boring” member of a twenty-year graduating high school class. I wanted to know why, and when that question was answered, I needed to know the answer to the next one, and on and on all through the book. Every time I thought I figured out what was going on, I was wrong. Every time I wanted to finish a chapter and put it down, the dramatic ending would propel me to the next chapter.
A clever, if not brilliantly written book. The author applies common themes of revenge, love, and redemption, but makes them all fresh and original.

A Dark Hour in the Past Comes to Life

Maybe because I believe everyone has some dark hour in their past they wish they could change, this story drew me in from the beginning.
Danny Teakwell did a terrible thing back in high school and it’s come back to haunt him at his twentieth high school reunion. More accurately, it’s been haunting him since high school, but everything springs back to life at the reunion, including a woman who is supposed to have died two decades ago. Everyone has a secret in this book.
Danny gets arrested for murder, sprung on bail in a bizarre courtroom performance by his even more bizarre lawyer, and only has a few days before he’s back in the slammer thanks to a “fruit punch” stain on the jacket he wore to the reunion, which turns out to be blood. He’s convinced the “dead woman” is the answer, but no one believes him so he sets off on a wild search to find her. There are a lot of twists and turns and I don't want to be a spoiler. Let's just say this is definitely not a boring book.
It’s a “period piece” set in 1995, with several flashbacks to when the characters were growing up, especially in high school in the 1970s.
I liked everything about this book, the writing, characters, and story.
