Orietta’s stylized portraits of African-American musicians featuring her trademark “Dancin’ Man” have garnered acclaim and a modest fortune-- just not for her. But Orietta’s latest painting might land her in prison.

As she pours out the sad tale of betrayal by her thieving husband, she does her best to keep up the spirits of the sympathetic investigating officer. But Orietta has seen justice served at last, and it is truly a work of art! One has to wonder, though: will the thieving, no-account husband be taken in for his own crimes, or bagged as evidence? The reader will have as much difficulty as Orietta is having keeping a straight face.

This dark comedy will appeal to fans of New Orleans noir and wronged women everywhere. A chilling, nevertheless cozy mystery, written in Orietta’s warm, bantering dialect, that will leave aficionados of Clementine Hunter cheering.

A fresh and refreshing approach.
By Chameleon
I don't think there is anything Julie Smith writes that she does not write well.

The one star reviewer I see must have read a different story. This did not take place over a telephone call. There are several references that make it clear that the two characters are in the same room. The first sentence in the book has Orietta offering coffee to the police officer; later she offers a tissue. I did not know that telephone technology had advanced that far. Regardless of the careless reading, do not be fooled. This is a winner.

This short mystery is told in a Nawlins patois that you can hear in your head as you enjoy the only character who speaks in the story. Sly, unassuming and totally enchanting at the same time. I did not anticipate the ending at all; I thought it was moving in a completely different direction.

Julie Smith's use of a self-dialogue to tell the tale is unique and engaging. There is so much I want to say about this little gem, but I'm afraid of slipping in a spoiler.

I immediately read it a second time and enjoyed it even more. Maybe it was because I could stop trying to figure it out before the end and instead just enjoy the elegance of a most engaging character.

It would be grand if Julie Smith wrote a collection of short mysteries like this in one book. I am embarrassed at paying less than a dollar for so much entertainment.

Can we have more, please?

P.S. ~ I wonder if people ever review a book and give it one star for a motive other than an honest review? Jus sayin...

Fresh Paint

Julie Smith is awesome! Out of all the authors that write fiction about New Orleans Julie Smith is one of my very favorites. This was a cute and funny short story.

Colorful, engaging, but mis-classified genre
By S. John
Hugable, New Orleans character describes her precarious situation to a cop in the one-sided telephone-conversation style of early Bob Newhart television comedies. Rated a five star if it were not classified as a short-story mystery. Rated a one star in comparison to all books, all genres read. Puts a smile on your face during those times when you are in a reception-area "waiting" mode. Women who want a giggle will love Orietta Banks as she describes how she became the "artist" she is today. This was not a requested review, but I will admit to loving the writing style of Julie Smith.
