GREAT MYSTERY -- Good choice for Kindle First

I scored this book free through Kindle First, and read the book today. (I'm a pretty quick reader, and this is definitely a book that I couldn't put down!) As you can tell from the book summary, the basic plot is that this story switches back and forth in time. In 1495, there are a series of murders, which are connected by a puzzle. Mühlenberg must solve them in order to save himself and his lover. Then, in the present day, Emily Richter (a journalist) begins writing a series of articles about those 1495 killings. Then, she finds a woman's body hanging -- much like had happened in the 1495 events. Emily then works with a Detective Bergmann to piece together the investigation, using notes left by Mühlenberg.
I won't give away any more of the plot line than what you get on the back cover and in the book's description on the Amazon page.
This really is a story that you want to read and figure through for yourself. The books skips around, between different time periods, and from the perspectives of different characters. I enjoy that type of book, and I think that it worked well here to keep the story moving along and maintained a good level of momentum.
OVERALL: It's not the best murder mystery I've ever read, but it's still very good. If you love a good solid mystery that keeps you guessing, you'll probably like this book. I found it completely engrossing and hard to put down.
For Kindle First Readers: I don't think you'll be disappointed getting this book, especially if you want a mystery that isn't a straight up police procedural, or that has some genuinely good storytelling.

Twisted and Enjoyable!

This hit all the high spots of an enjoyable twisted read for me. Serial killers - starting in the middle ages and brought forward to a present day copy cat killer. As with all serial killings, a good author shows how the killer became one and why he is kiliing the people that he has chosen. And Shepherd does does that quite well. Her easy to read prose moved me through the story very quickly - something I wondered about as I knew this was a translation. But I felt the story lost nothing in the translation.
The fatal puzzle was an interesting one. It brought aspects of astronomy and higher math into play. There was romance as well, an out with the old in with the new. A story line for the next book.
The author really has a great control of words. She neither too wordy or too frugal with words. My only complaint was that this book ended on a cliffhanger. I wish she had combined books one and two into one volume. For that I deducted one star. Otherwise, I think this was very close to a 4.5 star read.
I recommend this book to all who enjoy mystery/thrillers/serial killers novels.

Historical inaccuracies made me put it down

I'll be honest upfront, I did not finish the book. By the time I got perhaps halfway though, the small historical details that can make or break a book just overwhelmed me. This was clearly written by someone with the barest grasp on medieval history and historical research in general. For instance, the medieval "detective" (I'll just accept that at face value) at one point pulls out a "new notebook" to make crime scene notes in. Well, no. While wood pulp or rag paper was available at this time, it wasn't so mass produced that just anyone could go out and purchase a "new notebook"--not to mention all the assumptions inherent in his ability to read and write.
Later on, Emily and Anna visit the "county archive" where they tell the archivist what they're studying, and he goes in the back and brings out everything they could possibly want to read. Archives don't work like that. At all. If the girls spent a month combing through the archive's catalog, or thumbing through un-sorted boxes of paperwork it would be more believable. And in any case, the likelihood of anything paper surviving the intervening years is low, much less all the notes, sketches, etc from the investigation.
