Assassin 4 - First Son

Assassin 4 - First Son by Bryan Murray is a excellent book to read. I have really enjoyed reading all of this series. The story is about the President and Vice President sons, they are best friends, same age, and are roommates in collage. They both are going on a ski trip to Italy on Christmas break. They go to Italy and are both kidnapped by the mafia. Jake Harrington and Sarah go into Italy and rescue both boys. The white house has a celebration on the returning of the two young men, during the celebration the President son tries to kill his father. Jake Harrington shoots the gun out of his hand. The president finds out his son has been brain washed into trying to kill his father. Jake Harrington and Sarah are sent on a mission to find the person or persons responsible for this and kill them. What Jake and Sarah find out before killing the mafia boss could do harm to the President and his administration. You will want to read this book, but first read the full series of Assassins starting with the first book. I really enjoyed reading this book, I can't wait to read more books from this author.

Great idea for a story, but...

I generally try not to leave poor reviews. Sometimes, although well written, a particular story or genre, just isn't something that catches my attention. In that case, the issue is me, not the story. To leave a poor review for a story that didn't suit me would be churlish at best.
Unfortunately, this book I'm prepared to review and criticise, simply because it is abysmally written.
The précis appeared interesting enough; nothing too complex, but an idea that sounded entertaining enough for a little afternoon entertainment. Unfortunately, the writing style is truly bad. Not the idea, the plot or character development. No, it is the writing itself that is so simplistic that it seems to have been written by someone who has decided to write a book, come up with an idea and then started writing.
Even if the author were a first-time writer, (I have not checked) my understanding of the writing & publishing process is that after creating a first draft, every book is then subject to an exhausting editing and rewriting process. This is a step that, for this book at least, appears to have been entirely missed.
As much as I dislike criticising someone's hard work, this is a book that is not ready to be published, written by an author who seriously needs to study the writing styles of others. The words are all spelled correctly, the sentences are all coherent, but the writing style is utterly flat - not 'different', just utterly, boringly, "written by a school student", children's storyline, flat.
I'm a reader, not an author, so I'm the last person to take advice from, but this book is screaming out for someone to rewrite it. Perhaps then I'd be able to get through more than the first few dozen pages.
