An nail-biter of a suspense book! You don't want to miss this one!

This book reads like a movie. Mullaney begins by throwing the reader into the action, dropping you right into what's going on after the group has ended up at the house that changes everything. The action in this book is nonstop, and the suspense is at a high the entire time, much like with a thriller film.
The story is written almost in two different points of view - one from Samantha and one from everyone else. While the entire novel is actually in third person, Samantha's chapters have a stream of consciousness to them, detailing her thought processes as she tries to help her friends. The other chapters give more of a play-by-play of what's going on with the other characters. This slight shift in writing style helps the reader fall into whichever character the focus is on, without the style change affecting the overall quality of the read.
The author also created a pretty scary villain for this book - Michael. He's just a man who has been pushed too far and reaches that break in humanity that everyone is capable of reaching. Mullaney did a great job of giving characterization to someone who is seen only as the villain from the beginning. I have a bit of a soft spot for writers who can give the "bad guy" some justification, and Mullaney gives that in this book. He also did a great job of detailing relationships and giving the group of friends individual characteristics and lives, without having to break away from the current action.
If you're looking for a suspenseful book that's quick paced, this is a definite winner. I'm excited to see what else this author comes up with.

I have had the wonderful pleasure of reading this book

I have had the wonderful pleasure of reading this book. Normally I stick with my fantasy and sci-fi and often refrain from the genre of thriller, mystery, or horror. This story has changed my opinion of those genres. The author formed an edge-of-the-seat feeling keeping you captivated from page to page. It was a book I really didn't want to set down and stop reading for anything.
"Calm Before the Storm" has five creatively crafted characters. In this story each one is tested to their physical, mental, and emotional limits. The contrasting and complimentary traits of each individual drew you right into their quandary. I found Bobby to be very generic and predictable, which was nice to have someone like him to ground you to realism. Julia played a very significant role in the story as she mirrored the idea 'everyone has a breaking point'. Just as much as the reader is trying to anticipate the ending, Ted too was very analytical of the situation. His actions and thoughts were critical. This easily pulled you into their dilemma with an eerie understanding. Michael, the antagonist, goes through different stages during the book. He was volatile and much mimicked the storm. Then you have the character not built for conditions experienced in this story. Samantha is cooped up in her own mind, ignorant of many things, yet everything revolves around her. She doesn't appear to be dependable, rather quite listless. This young lady is forced to face her fears and herself to overcome the circumstances of Michael and the storm.
The inevitable alignment of perilous conditions plays the ultimate part, hence the well-chosen title. Tornadoes mow everything in their path once they touchdown. Some people will hide and cower until it passes, whereas others hold tight and endure it. You win and lose. It's life and death. Choose right or wrong. There's an imminent outcome. You will face hardship. How you decide to handle a storm will define your conclusion.

Get your blood pumping with this oustanding new thriller

Calm Before the Storm is a dark, psychological thriller that takes you through twists and turns that your mind may or may not be prepared for.
While waiting for impending doom in the form of a violent, epic storm, the characters themselves are exposed to several twisted catalysts that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and wondering what the next phase of terror will be.
This is the first work by Mullaney, and if "Calm Before the Storm" is any indication of what is to come, I certainly cannot wait to read his next work. Simply a must-read, folks.
