The hilarious Lucille Mazzarella is back, and this time she’s investigating a murder linked to her favorite pizzeria. When the fifty-something housewife goes undercover at a restaurant to solve the case, she quickly learns that if the killer doesn’t get her, the calories will.

When the owner of Lucille’s favorite pizzeria drops dead at her feet, she’s left wondering who could have harmed such a kind man—and wondering where she’ll get her favorite food now. Deciding to go undercover as a pizza maker to sniff out the clues—and maybe an extra slice or two—Lucille’s determined to track down the culprit before they can strike again.

As the hunt for the killer heats up, Lucille and her friend Flo dig deeper into the crime and discover a jealous wife, a competitive pizza man who would kill for more business, and a decades-old mystery that may hold the key to the murder. Trouble is, the one person who could break the case wide open is a nun who took a vow of silence—and she’s not talking.

Very Good
By vegas92(AnyGoodBook)
Lucille stops in at her favorite pizzeria and speaks briefly with the owner's wife, Tiffany, and purchases a couple of slices for her lunch. She then goes to work at St. Rocco's, and while checking flowers, the pizzeria's owner, Sal, runs into the church asking for the priest. It turns out, Sal has been stabbed, and dies before he can tell Lucille who did this. Thus begins the search for his killer...

Now we already know Lucille and her friend Flo are going to investigate the murder, even though they know they shouldn't. But what makes this book good is the fact that the investigation seems to go in so many different directions. They have no problem questioning anyone, even if it means the police are eventually going to show up.

I enjoyed the mystery as well as the back story between Lucille and her family. I did come away with the thought that her daughter Bernadette is one of the laziest people I've ever seen in a book. She almost appears to be a walking zombie, doing nothing but eating and watching television, even if she does have a baby. (Most young mothers I've met are quite harried, just trying to keep it all together, but this girl barely speaks and doesn't do anything around the house to help her mom at all.) Flo is a hoot, still trying to hang onto her youth at any cost, and even though one isn't old when one is in their fifties, they're still not twenty, and the relationships between Lucille, Frankie (her husband) and the rest of her relatives seem real.

The mystery itself was indeed inventive. It made you want to find out what exactly was happening, and why, so much so that I finished the book in one sitting (into the wee hours of the morning and I'll probably suffer for it today!) but I honestly couldn't put it down once things started to get going and more than one person seemed suspicious. The ending was all I could have hoped for, and more.

If one thing about the book bothered me, it was the way Lucille talked - I get that she's Italian, but she used a lot of double negatives and spoke differently than every other character, including her mother. Things like "them" instead of "the,"saying "this here" instead of "this," "didn't hear no" instead of "didn't hear any." Her daughter nor her husband speak like that, either, so I don't understand why she does, but I didn't allow it to spoil my enjoying the book, and neither should anyone else. In the end, highly recommended.

This is book #3 of A Lucille Mystery series
By A. Harris
This is Book #3 of the Lucille Mystery series. Lucille Mazzarella is a housewife who works part time at the church. Lucille's daughter, son-in-law and her newly born graddaughter are living with her and Frankie so she's got a lot on her plate. When she is at the church checking the flower arrangements she runs into Sal, owner of her favorite pizzeria. He is stabbed and is asking to be baptized as he knows he is dying. She ends up doing the baptism since it is an emergency. She decides to find out who killed Sal and she will need the help of her best friend Flo. Lucille goes undercover to work at a competing pizzeria to see if she can find anything out about who would want Sal dead. Her investigating uncovers a wife who may have been jealous and a competing pizzeria owner who needed more business. Lucille and Flo will end up at a tattoo shop and a convent to talk to a nun who may hold the answers to the mystery of who killed Sal. I don't want to give away too much as it would contain spoilers.

I haven't read the first two books in this series yet which is why I had such a hard time getting into this book and sorting out all the characters. I am glad I kept on reading because I eventually got everyone squared away and enjoyed getting to know Lucille and Flo. Their banter and antics had me laughing throughout, especially some of the situations they found themselves in. The author did a great job in bring the story to life for me as I could picture everything as it was happening. I could relate to Lucile and some of the things she was going through. The mystery was very well thought out and I had no clue who the killer was. The story kept my attention to see how all the clues would come together to reveal a killer. I haven't laughed while reading a book in a long time so this was a nice change for me and I just may go back and read the others in the series so I can get more background on these characters.

I received a free ebook version of this from the publisher, Beyond the Page Publishing, through NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Hilarious cozy mystery with unique characters!
By Kris Anderson - The Avid Reader
Hit and Nun by Peg Cochran is a funny cozy mystery and the third book in The Lucille Mystery series. Lucille Mazzarella is in her fifties, married to Frankie, has a daughter, Bernadette, and a granddaughter, Lucia. She is also overweight, going through menopause, and dislikes change. Lucille still wears the leather jacket her husband gave her in high school (though it barely zips) and drives her 1987 Olds (despite the fact that it is on its last legs). Lucille comes from an Italian family. She hosts big family dinners every Sunday after Church with traditional Italian fare. Cousins Louis and Millie are no longer living with Lucille and Frank, but now they have Bernadette, her new husband Tony Jr., and little Lucy.

Lucille also works part-time at St. Rocco's Catholic Church (where she has found two bodies). Lucille is at work in the Church checking on the flowers when Sal, owner of Sal's Pizzeria, stumbles in clutching his side. Sal is bleeding and wants to be baptized. Since there is no priest around to baptize him, Lucille does the deed (she remembers that a layperson can baptize someone if they are about to die). Sal then dies. Lucille and her friend, Flo set out to find out who killed the owner of their favorite pizza restaurant (Lucille does love her food). They are checking out Sal's wife, Tiffany when they find her dead in her garage. The killer made it look like a suicide, but Lucille knows it was not (her purse was in the kitchen). Lucille and Flo will do whatever it takes to solve the murders (you are never going to believe what they do this time).

Lucille is a unique character. She marches to a different tune. Lucille's idea of dieting is hilarious. It is no wonder that she keeps gaining weight. Lucille also avoids technology. No GPS, no cell phone (Frank gave her one and she accidentally dropped it in the toilet), no MP3 player (still plays cassette tapes in her car). I do not know how she puts up with some of her relatives. Louis and Millie arrive for meals but offer no money or help. Bernadette does nothing around the house except make messes. Her mother is constantly getting into trouble. She insists on driving (she mixes up the brake and gas pedals).

I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. There is a lot of humor in the book and it is an easy book to read. The mystery, though, is very easy to solve. Peg Cochran is a good writer. I love her Gourmet De-Lite Mystery series and am looking forward to Berried Secrets (A Cranberry Cove Mystery) which will be out in August. Happy Reading!
