What happens when those sworn to protect are attacked and need protection themselves?
When a high-ranking cop is gunned down by a sniper, Louisiana Sheriff Calvin Burke puts London Carter and Bethany Riggs on the case. London and Bethany quickly uncover information involving a sex triangle within the sheriff’s office and they subsequently arrest police sniper Kenneth Lewis for the killing.
When Kenneth commits suicide in police custody and another high-ranking cop is killed two days later, however, London and Bethany realize the case is far from closed. Things are further complicated when they locate a mysterious message at two of the crime scenes—the words “James 516.”
Immense pressure is put on London and Bethany to solve the case. As they scramble to track down the killer, that pressure turns to heat, and they find themselves falling for each other even as they attempt to decipher the meaning of the message “James 516” before the murderer takes out the sheriff’s entire staff.

One twisted roller coaster of a ride. Two thumbs up, way up

Hell of a good read. Spoiler alert.
This one starts with London Carter and his boys on the Magnolia Parish Sniper/SWAT team they are all headed for a hostage situation at a local bank. Magnolia Parish is in Louisiana and London has been a cop on the force for twelve years. He runs the sniper end of SWAT and London knows this will be a tough one.
Carter gets to the high ground across from the bank. The gunman has already killed several of the hostages so Carter knows this man will kill them all. Killing him is Carter's mission.
The gunman kills another hostage and Captain Landry, Carter's boss, has what the gunman wants. An SUV with tinted windows brought in front of the bank. When the gunman leaves the bank he has three hostages with him and they are all covered with a curtain. Carter can't see who to shoot at.
One of the hostages then jerks the curtain down and Carter takes his shot, killing the gunman. Everyone is relieved until the Captain's brains blow out the back of his head. Carter knows a sniper is out there and he glasses everything with the scope on his rifle to see if he can locate whoever it is. Everyone else is jumping for cover.
No one can believe one of their Captains has just been murdered. Little do they know, he's the first of many that will pay for a twenty year old cover up and crime.
So begins one damned fine read.
This one has London, Bethany, Gina, Sally, Sheriff Burke, the many dead, a London who has a relationship with Bethany, a Bethany who isn't who she appears to be, a trip to Tennessee to see a famous sniper, an interlude for London and Sally, an ambush on the road to see the sniper, a London who realizes the whole thing goes back to the raid on a drug dealer who wasn't a drug dealer at all, a London who's slowly putting the pieces together, the Magnolia Parish Captains who aren't what they appear to be, those who are looking for justice, a London who's house is raided by Sheriff Burk and the Magnolia Parish deputies, a London and Sally who are arrested by Sheriff Burke, a London who takes out another sniper, a London who gets the surprise of his life when he sees who the sniper is and London Carter doing his best to figure out one twisted tale, save as many as he can and stay alive.
Damned fine read. Five Stars.

Take the shot with "JAMES 516" by BJ Bourg

For most folks it was a calm Tuesday in Magnolia Parrish in southern Louisiana. For a few others, such as the unlucky folks who worked at the First Gold Bank it has been an hour plus of sheer terror on this mid-August day. A man walked in, robbed the place, and then attempted to leave only to be stopped by the first police officer dispatched to the scene as a result of a teller hitting the silent alarm. The bank robber fired a shot at the officer and missed before retreating back into the bank and taking hostages. Sergeant London Carter, a sniper, and the rest of his team from the Magnolia Parrish Sheriff’s Office are tasked with dealing with the suspect and saving as many lives as possible.
During the course of the operation one of their own is killed to the shock and horror of nearly every officer on scene. In the aftermath of the officer involved shooting Internal Affairs Lieutenant Bethany Riggs is brought into the lead the investigation into what happened. Was the death of Captain Landry a result of an accidental discharge by one of the snipers or was he killed by somebody else?
Answering that question leads to a far bigger mystery in the new and very intense read James 516 by B. J. Bourg. Well known for his short stories and nonfiction work, this novel published by Amber Quill Press features complicated characters, plenty of action, and a mystery that works well from start to finish. The book opens in the thick of the action quickly grabbing the reader’s attention with a complicated mystery, a romantic angle, an outside threat, along with several other ingredients. The author skillfully keeps the reader tightly focused into the book as he gradually ratchets up the tension to the final page. The book is compelling and intense from start to finish and one heck of a read.

an excellent read.

The pacing, plot twists, and realistic character portrayal in this book captivated my attention from the first scene and kept me engrossed all the way to the thrilling conclusion. The writing was seamless, dialog driven, and combined just the right amount of police procedure, romance and mystery. Overall, an excellent read.
