Show of Force, by Charles D. Taylor

As the two largest, most powerfully equipped naval fleets in history move slowly toward each other near Islas Piedras–an American missile site in the Indian Ocean that threatens Russia's grip on the Middle East–two men stand in the darkened control rooms of their ships. David Charles and Alex Kupinsky are worried because, as the admirals of these fleets, they may be responsible for all-out nuclear war. They are also concerned because once, a long time ago, they were the best of friends…

As Admirals Charles and Kupinsky face imminent disaster, forced to make their moves on the chessboard of modern warfare, we look back over their pasts as men of peace and men of war. David Charles learned the hard way in the tragic Bay of Pigs, on the treacherous rivers of Vietnam, and in the backrooms of embassies around the world. Alex Kupinsky was raised by the man who watched his father die in World War II–the same man who has since become Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union.

Moving from the real past to the possible future, from romantic memories of the women left behind to hard action on the high seas, SHOW OF FORCE is the story of men turned warriors, of a world turned battlefield. And as communications break down between Washington, Moscow, and the fleets themselves, it becomes the story of two men with the power to stop that ultimate folly of the mighty, World War III.

So much wrong....
By Brooks A Rowlett
Many reviewers talk about this book favorably, about its battle scenes and technology descriptions, some even considering it as an equal to Clancy's naval scenes in Hunt for Red October or Red Storm Rising. As someone who worked for the Navy in this era and had considerable familiarity with the weapon systems of the time, I found this book to be based on serious misunderstandings of modern naval warfare weapon systems and tactics. With the revelations of performances of Soviet systems and naval though post-Cold War, the book looks even worse to me now. Even at the time I thought this book was a good reason to NOT bother with any of the author's other works, as I found the technical errors - and the plot was driven in many ways by tactics based on these incorrect understandings of the technology - so gross and misleading, that I knew I had learned nothing useful about modern naval warfare by reading this novel. To give some comparison, consider that if you were reading one of the age of sail naval warfare novelists like Forrester or Pope and their description of weapons and tactics of that era was badly wrong, how much would it matter if the overall plot was entertaining? Some wouldn't care, but some would - I fall into that latter category. In short, a book I chose to dispose of, as its entertainment value was more than counterbalanced by knowing that things simply couldn't happen the way described.... Including the ending, which made me think of Dorothy Parker's classic book review saying "This is not a book to put down lightly - it should be thrown away with great force." I truly felt that way when I reached the last page.

A classic description of modern naval warfare
By C. J. McAllister
This was Taylor's first novel, written while the Soviet navy was still a dominant force on the world's seas. It is set in a "near future" in which two US and Soviet naval battle groups meet and engage in a remote corner of the globe. Taylor creates a well detailed picture of modern naval warfare, describing both the high speed engagements of computer driven missile duels and the thoughts of the opposing task force commanders as they manuever, attempting to anticipate each other's moves in a deadly chess-like game. The author is superb at illustrating both the awesome power and the severe weaknesses of carrier battle groups. The characters are believable and sympathetic. There are many heroes but no villains, just warriors demonstrating great courage as they serve their respective countries. The book is out of print and 25 years old, but it is well worth reading for the excellent descriptions of naval battles and for its reminder of the lesson that military veterans know only too well: that warfare is bloody and deadly, and should be entered as a last resort and for only the best and most necessary reasons.

Not Up to Par Then - And Especially Now!
By Master Hahn
I read this book years ago (early 1980s when it first came out) via a library loan.

Too many typo and technical errors. And errors of even fictionalized "facts".

Plus rated the Soviet Navy WAY above its then believed capabilities - much less what turned out to be its true capabilities.

Post Cold War analysis showed that NONE of the Soviet military capabilities were remotely as potent as we were being lead to believe (pumped up fictional analysis by the CIA combined by disinformation by the Soviets).

Makes for a poor story.

Plus... what did the U.S. admiral learn from his experiences with his involvement with the Bay of Pigs (no naval engagements at all) and Vietnam (basically naval air campaigns and some naval gunfire ground support... no real naval engagements)?
