In the Waters of Time, by Bette Lischke

In author Bette Lischke's mesmerizing novel, In the Waters of Time, a young woman learns that sometimes one's soul gets a second chance for love. Lischke blends history, mystery, romance, tragedy and love in a luminous story of two women whose lives and souls are linked across time and sea.

In modern day Portland, Maine, Jane Eliot is a sensitive young wife haunted by vivid, disturbing dreams -- and by grief over her inability to conceive. During a holiday on Peaks Island, Jane's dreams multiply and intensify, pulling her into a dark current of visions that surge through her waking hours. Mesmerized, Jane sees through the eyes of Elizabeth, a young Victorian woman who recklessly abandons her marriage and children in pursuit of love. As Jane re-lives the passion and calamity of Elizabeth's last days, she struggles to chart her own course for life.

In the Waters of Time sweeps readers from the fresh air of the New England coast, to the claustrophobic, squalid quarters of an Irish immigrant sailing ship and back, in a transformational tale that explores the power of attraction across lives -- and the possibilities for love in the present when the waters of time recede.

Time travel at its best!
By Donna Seim, Author of Asante Sana Tanzania
"In The Waters of Time" is an absolute must read! The author, Bette Lischke, keeps the storyline compelling while artfully taking the reader back and forth through layers of time. I found myself mesmerized by the captivating character of 19th-century Elizabeth; the rich detail of her person and life as mother, teacher, and lover. The description of the 19th-century workhouse where she taught is powerful. Her story is revealed through modern day Jane's dreams like pieces of a puzzle. She finds Elizabeth torn between her love of her children and her desperate decisions to find happiness. Tormented by her dreams and physical symptoms, Jane begins an incredible journey to release herself from the binds of past spirits and seek her spiritual freedom. "In The Waters of Time", Lischke, does a phenomenal job juggling a chain of lives (spirits) and the intricate way they touch upon each other. I fell captive, crashing and rolling with the waves until the unveiling of the delicate and deeply touching finale.

3.5 stars: A promising premise, but disjointed
By Cissa
A woman is haunted in both dreaming and waking life by someone who lived around 100 years previously. Hallucinations? Ghosts? Memories of a prior life?

This is coupled with various more mundane problems, such as her miscarriages, her disinterest in her job, an annoying set of tics in her right hand that prevent her from creating art (though not, apparently, from doing other things that require facility) and feeling a rift between herself and her husband.

The pacing did not work for me.

We start out with Jane, a modern American woman, who is having dreams and visions of Elizabeth, a Victorian British woman, as well as her spastic hand, her sleepwalking and sleep-drawing, etc.

At first, this novel focused on Jane and her problems. But the middle third or so was all about Elizabeth, which is also a reasonably interesting story, but the author abandons Jane for that time.

After Elizabeth dies (not a spoiler, because no Victorian woman would have survived to now), we revert to Jane, who just so happens to meet a spiritualist hypnotherapist with whom she has amazing results immediately, including a lot of the cliched "white light" and "There are NO coincidences!" -- which, frankly, strikes me as terrifying. In short order her various problems are resolved; she understands that everything has worked out for the best; and most of her social and family circle turn out to be compadres in a spiritual group dedicated to evolving toward the Light over the centuries. The first part -- Jane haunted by visions -- made sense. As it progressed, though, the novel became less and less plausible for one who does not share the spiritualism that the author depicts.

Although the narrative is grounded by a lot of physical details, they are often not explained, and the consequences are often not addressed. Anyway, miracles for me need to be plausible miracles. This narrative is too disjointed to provide that. I wish it had been better; the premise is sound and it starts out promising, but derails.

I received this novel via Rambles.net in exchange for a fair and honest review.

TIME TRAVEL EXPLORED IN A THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND SENSITIVE METAPHYSICAL NOVEL
By L. C. Henderson
The intensity of In the Waters of Time lies in its exploration of the pathways taken by two women who live life in the same body, one, Elizabeth, who finds a meaningful existence in the arms of her lover, despite the grim surrounds of a Victorian workhouse, and the other, Jane, who flees her unfulfiling life in the modern-day corporate world to find a more personal sense of contentment in reshingling a friend’s home. Both of the characters have much in common, including a love for children, who are described in joyful detail, and their yearning to express themselves creatively. Elizabeth encourages the poverty-stricken and abused children in the workhouse to draw in colored chalk on the walls of their school room, while Jane finds an innate sense of accord in the world of interior decoration and design. No wonder, then, that one finds that the author of this metaphysical novel, Bette Lischke, is a well-known dowser and watercolorist who takes a keen interest in all things spiritual. Like Jane, she, too, has worked as an executive recruiter, and her own love for children is shown by the fact not only did she once work as a nanny, but also by her writing of numerous songs for children.

The Jungian influences on Lischke’s work are clear, in that the narrative is primarily focused on Jane, who lives in modern-day Portland, Maine, and who is able, first through dreams, and then by means of a steadily increasing emergence of her subconscious through her waking moments, to become ever more emotionally and spiritually in touch with what one assumes to be her previous life, as the initially socially constrained and duty-bound Elizabeth. As the flashbacks to her earlier existence become increasingly more powerful, Jane’s awareness of her own innermost conflicts in the present day develops in its intensity. By being open to her presence in this world on an earlier occasion, Jane is able to reconcile herself to the demands that are made on her in the present day.

In the Waters of Time is a genre-crossing (containing elements of history and mystery, as well as romance) and deeply sensitive portrayal of the role of women who wish to avoid the constrictions and restrictions that society has, for so long, sought to impose upon them. Lischke’s poetic use of imagery mirrors her depth of feeling, and anyone who appreciates the lyrical descriptiveness of the English language is bound to be sensitive to the nuances of this text. Do not expect the commonplace and mundane from In the Waters of Time, and you will not be disappointed. This novel is for all lovers of romance and the unexpected, who can appreciate sound character development and a well-written exposé of the human spirit as it travels through time.
