Bonita Avenue: A Novel, by Peter Buwalda

"Dazzling...Critics hailed Buwalda as 'The Dutch answer to Jonathan Franzen', but his brilliance is entirely unique."--The Times (UK)

Siem Sigerius is a beloved, brilliant professor of mathematics with a promising future in politics. His family—including a loving wife, two gorgeous, intelligent stepdaughters and a successful future son-in-law—and carefully appointed home in the bucolic countryside complete the portrait of a comfortable, morally upright household. But there are elements of Siem's past that threaten to upend the peace and stability that he has achieved, and when he stumbles upon a deception that’s painfully close to home, things begin to fall apart. A cataclysmic explosion in a fireworks factory, the advent of internet pornography, and the reappearances of a discarded, dangerous son all play a terrible role in the spectacular fragmentation of the Sigerius clan.

A riveting portrait of a family in crisis and the ways that even the smallest twists of fate can forever change our lives, Bonita Avenue is an incendiary, unpredictable debut of relationships torn asunder by lies, and minds destroyed by madness.

Review
"When I finished Bonita Avenue...I knew it was definitely a very good and structurally interesting book. But over the next nine months the novel has only grown more powerful in my imagination, and certain scenes have gotten stuck in my head and I can’t get them out... Buwalda skillfully charts the course of a dysfunctional family with many secrets and, in the formidable Professor Siem Sigerius, a stubborn patriarch whose past may destroy his family. The characters are complex, often amoral, and masterfully observed by the author. The drama and pathos are offset in a lovely way by dark humor and absurdity. Buwalda handles the revelations of mysteries in both the present and past with remarkable assurance. The novel’s climax is chilling, unforeseen, and in some ways, profound."—Jeff VanderMeer

"Robust [and] dark... In the manner of Iris Murdoch at her most manic...The plot orchestration and lively character renderings of Bonita Avenue are dazzling."—New York Times Book Review

"A bold and assured debut, Bonita Avenue deftly alternates between narrators and settings to keep readers morally unsettled and in suspense. It’s not hard to see why Peter Buwalda’s ambitious debut novel, first published in his native Holland in 2010, has attracted numerous comparisons to the work of Jonathan Franzen...A satisfying, psychologically nuanced read."—Huffington Post

"Buwalda's magnificent first novel offers proof of Tolstoy's dictum that 'every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.' Three uniquely unreliable voices narrate this darkly humorous familial drama...Their interweaving narratives, which hop between the Netherlands, Shanghai, Belgium, and California, chart the years between the rise and fall of their outwardly successful but privately dysfunctional family."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“This award-winning debut novel is flat-out extraordinary. The rich layer of detail would be impressive if applied to one topic, but Buwalda creates multiple complex worlds around vastly different subjects…An outstanding literary suspense story that will appeal to a wide range of readers.”—Library Journal, (starred review)

“Buwalda’s debut…becomes increasingly compulsive reading as it nears its dark close…This tumultuous saga of a family breaking down…is an international bestseller and award winner. A significant literary achievement.”—Booklist, (starred review)

"Dazzling...[A] giddily twisting family drama."—Penthouse

International Praise for BONITA AVENUE

“One wild ride:  a swirling helix of a family saga that swerves from gross-out sex comedy to pitch-black revenge tragedy as twist after twist reframes what we know about its dysfunctional cast…manic…  as toe-curling as early Roth, as roomy as Franzen and as caustic as Houellebecq. Don’t let me forget to mention Jonathan Reeder’s note-perfect English translation.”—Telegraph (UK)

"No way that this is a debut novel, is your first impression when you start reading Bonita Avenue––but it is! An instant literary classic, loaded with suspense, by a brilliant and truly original writer."—Herman Koch, author of THE DINNER and SUMMERHOUSE WITH SWIMMING POOL

“A literary sensation…[A] crazy-paving, jigsaw puzzle...Addictive...A considerable achievement …Bonita Avenue is an entertaining end in itself, and evidence that Buwalda is just getting started.”—Independent (UK)

“Compelling”—The List (UK)

"Plenty of wit and sharp human observation… Highly recommended for fans of dark family drama"—We Love This Book

"Fluent and complex, uncompromising and shocking.”—Daily Mail (UK)

“This dazzling family saga was a huge hit when it was published in the Netherlands in 2010; critics hailed Buwalda as 'The Dutch answer to Jonathan Franzen', but his brilliance is entirely unique.”—The Times (UK)

“Great European art: the Dutchman Peter Buwalda explodes the bourgeois family saga. The narrative pyrotechnics alone are a tour de force.”—Die Ziet (Germany)

"It’s a fantastic debut which, at over 500 pages, doesn’t outstay its welcome" —Glasgow Herald

When Joni Sigerius first took Aaron to meet her parents at their converted farmhouse one Sunday afternoon in 1996, her father's handshake was so firm it hurt. "You took that photo," the man said. Or was it a question?

Siem Sigerius was a stocky, dark-haired fellow with a pair of ears that you noticed immediately; they were lumpy, they looked deep-fried, and Aaron's judo past told him they were cauliflower ears. You got them from chafing against coarse cotton sleeves, from letting the flaps get scrunched up between hard bodies and rough mats; blood and pus built up between the cartilage and the baby-soft skin. Not doing anything about it meant being stuck with hardened, swollen lumps for good. Aaron had a pair of perfectly normal, unblemished, peachy-soft ears; cauliflower ears were reserved for champions, for the monomaniacs who scraped themselves across a tatami night after night. You had to earn ears like that, man-years had gone into it. There was no doubt in his mind that Joni's father wore them as a badge of honor, as proof of hard work and manliness. Aaron used to dread coming face-to-face with a similarly ear-marked beast at a tournament; a cauliflower ear on the horizon was bad news, as a competitive judoka he was useless. To hide his awe, he replied: "I take photos all the time."

Sigerius's ears quivered. His frizzy hair was close-cropped like felt against his broad, flat head. Despite his wardrobe--suits or corduroy trousers and Ralph Lauren polo shirts, the garb of the employer, the arrive--you'd never take him, judging from the ears and that buffalo body, for someone who ran a university, let alone believe he was the Netherlands' greatest mathematician since Luitzen Brouwer. It was a physique you expected to see at a construction site, or on a freeway at night in a fluorescent vest, trudging behind a tar-spreader. "You know full well which photo," he said.

Joni, her sister, Janis, his wife, Tineke, all of them in the spacious living room knew which photo he meant. It had been printed full-page about a year earlier in the newspaper serving Tubantia University, the small college whose campus was tucked into the woods between Enschede and Hengelo, and where Sigerius was rector magnificus. He was standing on the bank of the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal, wearing nothing but a necktie, legs planted wide in the muddy, trampled grass, his genitals clearly visible under his cautiously rounded fifty-plus belly. The next day the photo had found its way into nearly every national newspaper, from the NRC to De Telegraaf, and ultimately even to the German Bild and a Greek daily.

"I have a hunch," Aaron conceded, wondering whether Joni had told her father who he was, or if Sigerius simply recognized him: the tall, bald photographer from the Tubantia Weekly who buzzed around the rector during public appearances like a horsefly with a single-lens reflex. The latter option, he thought, was more flattering, just as anyone on campus would feel flattered to be recognized by the charismatic man who at this very moment was crushing his hand to a pulp.

Simon Sigerius was, since his appointment in 1993, the Helios of Tubantia University, a blazing sun around which 8,000 students and hard-working academics orbited in calm little ellipses, surprised yet grateful that he would bathe their campus, of all places, in his warmth, and not the Binnenhof in The Hague, where he had turned down a plum government post, or one of the big American universities that vied for his favor. The first time Aaron had seen Joni's father was on television several years earlier, when he was still living with his folks in Venlo. The August following his final exams, something possessed him and his brother to become fanatical Zomergasten viewers, and one of those exhilarating, reflective Sunday evening marathon interviews was with a mathematical judoka--or was it a judo-practicing mathematician--anyway, a man whose "ideal TV evening" selection alternated video fragments of judo star Wim Ruska, edgy jazz, the Tokyo 1964 Olympics, and a Dutch comedian with documentaries about prime numbers and Fermat's Last Theorem. Aaron recalled a clip where a talkative physicist succeeded in giving sworn art majors like him and his brother the impression that they actually understood something of quantum mechanics. ("Richard Feynman," Sigerius said later. "We'd just buried him.") The man himself rubbed his stubbly jaw and talked about computers, about the universe, about M.C. Escher, as though anything else was a complete waste of time. It turned out he'd also judoed against Geesink and Ruska, but owed this television appearance mainly to the fact that he'd been awarded a Fields Medal, a distinction the host called the Nobel Prize for mathematics.

Since then Sigerius had grown into the national poster-boy scientist. Their rector would regularly, after a full workday on campus, pull up a seat on the evening news or a talk show and offer scientific commentary on current affairs, dazzlingly intelligent yet at the same time remarkably down-to-earth, never a word of gibberish. As photographer for the Weekly Aaron was front and center when Sigerius set up shop in the university's administrative wing, and what his camera saw, everybody saw: this was exactly the man Tubantia needed. Just by being himself, Sigerius had liberated this overlooked and underrated university from its Twents timidity and inferiority complex. In his inaugural address he vowed to turn Tubantia into the Netherlands' premier research institute, a phrase that was broadcast that same day on the national news. He was a media magnet: no sooner had somebody uttered the word "university" than the cauliflower ears appeared on air, and their rector gave, on behalf of their university, his opinion on the competitive position of Dutch research schools, on girls' technical ability, on the future of the Internet, you name it. Sigerius just as effortlessly attracted top international scholars. Maybe it was a pity that the Fields Medal wasn't a genuine Nobel Prize, of course that was a pity, but his aura of mathematical genius still mesmerized investors in pure science, dyscalculaic MPs with education portfolios, communications giants and chip manufacturers whose labs sprang up around the university. And perhaps even schoolkids, they too recognized Sigerius's stubbly mug from TV; don't forget the precious progeny, each year the little brats had to be lured to that godforsaken hick town in Twente, how do you entice them, how do you hook them?

The pied piper of Tubantia, bare-assed in the daily papers. "Nice work," he said, and released Aaron's hand.

He'd taken the photo on a Sunday afternoon in Houten, just after they had finished rowing the Varsity, the traditional student regatta between boats from various universities. Blaauwbroek, the editor-in-chief of the Weekly, had assured Aaron that something special was on the cards: the Tubantia boat had an Olympic skipper on board as well as an oarsman with the Holland 8 Atlanta crew. Still, it was unusual for a university rector to sacrifice his free day to accompany a busload of boozing fratboys all the way to the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. During the minor events he observed Sigerius out of the corner of his eye; the man stood on the soggy washland grass between the bar and the wooden bleachers, surrounded by a rat pack of hard-core Siemsayers, fawning undergrads who went out of their way to claim the rector as their own. Sigerius appeared to take pleasure in these boys' company. He had sucked them out of their big townhouses, they came swarming to the campus, hankering after a part-time job at the policy office or with public relations, flattering themselves on being invited to Sigerius's annual barbecue at his farmhouse. Aaron felt a pang of jealousy. Was the guy acting or genuinely enjoying himself?

Blaauwbroek's instinct was right: it was a historic Sunday afternoon for Tubantia. An "Oude Vier" from Enschede won the race for the first time in its 112-year history. Aaron was standing on the windy bleachers when the crowd around him roared, an explosion of hoarse cheers mixing with the crackle of plastic beer glasses. And because fratboys will always do the predictable thing, the gang of fanatics down at the water's edge tore off their clothes and swam, stark naked, out to the boat--at which moment he caught sight of the rector, who did something totallly unpredictable: Sigerius flung his half-filled beer tumbler into the grass and crossed the mudbank toward the water--Aaron had already clambered down from the bleachers, his camera lens followed the grinning rector as he removed his suit--everything came off, his shirt, his socks, his underwear, all except the necktie, a rowing tie, of course he'd let them foist a team tie on him, he was an honorary member of every club with a beer tap--and just before he broke into a sprint toward the canal to dive in after them, Aaron shouted his name, "Sigerius!," and snapped a photo of him from about four meters away, in all his glory.

Joni's dad was right, it was nice work, it was in all respects a fantastic photo. There was speed: his subject, filling the frame, stood on the balls of his feet, his arms thrown into the air, and while his torso appeared to already be heading for the glistening strip of water in the background, his bellowing mouth and furious eyes looked straight at the lens. The late-afternoon sun floodlit his naked body, the composition seemed meticulously arranged: Sigerius's outstretched left hand pointed more or less in the direction of the boat off in the canal; like a stylized sporting photograph, it resonated with a Greek-Olympian buzz. But this was all photographer blahblah--it was obvious why the newspaper wanted the picture. Even before Aaron left Houten he spent a quarter of an hour squabbling with a PR girl from Tubantia University, who insisted the photo had to be run by her department for approval, which of course would never be granted. On the contrary, the next morning the editors treated him like he was Robert Capa. "You bet I'm going to print that photo," snorted Blaauwbroek. "It's going to the printer's in an armored car, and I'll guard the presses with my life if need be."

After that the naked rector surfaced everywhere, blown up above the bar in the rowing club canteen, on a local debating society's T-shirts, on a poster announcing a massive summer festival on campus. Aaron saw him taped to dormitory bathroom doors. And, coincidence or no, Sigerius was increasingly the subject of wild speculation, in the fraternities on the Oude Markt, at parties in the campus housing. The rector was said to have traveled with Ruska through the Soviet Union and China en route to Japan, trashing Russian eateries on the way; he was purported to have been given electroshock treatment in an American madhouse after his big mathematical breakthrough; there were allegedly children from an earlier marriage who had come to no good. You only had to take a better look at the photo, and all doubt melted off the paper onto your lap. Everyone could see that Sigerius's ears were representative of the body hidden beneath those immaculate two-piece suits, mostly monotonous dark blue, sometimes light-gray pinstripe; the body, so crudely exposed, appeared surprisingly tough and sinewy, hard, unbreakable--"dry," to express it in sports terms. It was difficult not to have an opinion about that body, or about the clearly visible tattoos on the left side of his chest, over Sigerius's heart: Aaron recognized the inscription, in cheap, dark-blue sailor's ink, the pair of Japanese characters--"judo." It evoked conflicting reactions: in 1995, not only were tattoos relatively rare, they were downright tacky. But at the same time it tallied entirely with Sigerius's physicality, the apeman who would tip back his chair during meetings, balancing on the back legs until he had to grab the edge of the table, who rolled his shoulders loose like a trapeze artist during the coffee breaks, looking around to see if there was anyone who needed a thrashing before the meeting reconvened--murky keyholes through which the campus could catch a glimpse of another, discarded Sigerius, a thug, a he-man whose dream career had begun with two European judo titles, a fighter for whom the Munich Olympics should have been the highlight of his life.

In interviews they read that their rector was, like Ruska, tipped for a medal in 1972, but that a month before the Games, fate intervened: hungry for a custard donut, Sigerius crossed the Biltstraat in Utrecht, and just as the soft, creamy custard made contact with his mouth he was sideswiped by a motor scooter, whose metal footboard drove straight through his shin: crack, goodbye athletic career. What no journalist, no student, no scientist could get enough of was the idea that without that uneaten donut, the real miracle of Sigerius's career would never have taken place. The Miracle of the Antonius Matthaeuslaan, as he himself called it, after the street in Utrecht where for eight months he was confined to a bed in a tiny upstairs apartment, encased up to his groin in plaster. In the dark winter following the '72 Olympics, as Joni's father, bruised and broken, lay thumbing through a cardboard box of back issues of waiting-room magazines, he came across a stray exam booklet from the Dutch Mathematics Olympiad--a pamphlet full of uncommonly difficult problems for uncommonly brainy high-school students--and out of sheer boredom started scribbling sums in the margins. The next morning he was finished.

Exactly what happened in those twenty-four hours, which doors were flung open in Sigerius's traumatized athlete's head, is anybody's guess, but the fact was that within three years he had graduated summa cum laude from the Utrecht Mathematics Department, produced an alarmingly brilliant doctoral dissertation, and in the early '80s moved with his family to Berkeley, California. And there, at long last, he reached his Olympian peak. The Ramanujan of Utrecht forced a breakthrough in knot theory, a branch of mathematics that attempts to understand the number of ways in which a piece of rope can be tied--there is no conciser, simpler definition of his work--which earned him the Fields Medal in 1986 at the quadrennial congress of the International Mathematics Union.

All this shot through Aaron's mind when he recognized the woman sitting diagonally across from him. Despite her metamorphosis he knew straightaway who she was. There, next to a gum-chewing girl in the crimson sales uniform of some chain store, sat Joni's mother. He was blinded by a stroboscopic shock of white light.

He had been jolted out of a dreamless doze, and although he was still sitting in the express train to Brussels--they'd already passed Liege--his situation had altered drastically in the half hour he'd been sleeping. The carriage was now jam-packed, the evening light that shone through the windows appeared heavy, leaden, it was Belgian light, refracted and made turbid by the undulating landscape. Tineke Sigerius, he saw in a glance, leaned with her temple against the window and stared absently at the receding Walloon hills and single-steepled villages. His first reflex was to bolt, make a run for it, but his escape route was blocked by standing passengers--so to get up and move to the other end of the compartment was virtually impossible. His body acted as though it were racing up a steep slope in blind panic. He sat like this for several minutes, sweating, hyperventilating, exhorting himself to calm down, in anticipation of the confrontation.

Worth the Time and Attention it Takes
By Mary Lins
Readers who prefer straightforward plots and timelines, and who are bothered by having to read a while before the exposition becomes clear, and who need at least one "likable" character, may have a hard time with Peter Buwalda's novel, "Bonita Avenue", which has been translated from Dutch. The narrative jumps around in time and among characters so the reader must be patient and keep reading in order to "fill in" the lacunae.

This is one of those novels that give you a bit of a mental work out - and it's totally worth it. I suspect this novel will be a huge literary success. It's so polished that it's hard to believe it's Peter Buwalda's first! It takes a talented storyteller to reveal major plot points early in the tale and still hold the reader's interest as the details are gradually revealed. In fact, there is a bit of a surprising "twist" or "reveal" in the middle of the book and another towards the end - though savvier readers may have figured these out sooner than I did.

The story revolves around the Sigerius family who are complicated, messy, often ugly, and frequently dysfunctional. (Warning: there are passages of explicit sexuality that may bother some readers.) The novel contains fascinating characters, and it is beautifully written. It covers a myriad of topics ranging from judo and mental illness, to the on-line porn industry. The novel follows this unhappy family from the 1980s to the 2000s by which Buwalda masterfully captures recent history in both Europe and the US.

"Bonita Avenue", is the name of a street in Berkley, California where the Dutch family of Siem Sigerius lived for two years while Siem, an award winning mathematician (and Judo expert), worked out his groundbreaking "knot theory". You can't miss the symbolism of "knot theory", twisted Judo holds, and bondage porn. My one quibble (not enough to subtract a star) is that the climactic ending went on a little too long and the denouement wasn't as satisfying as I would have wished.

Tedious
By Gracie
This was promoted as a story about a family in crisis. I suppose there are a lot of ways that family could be in crisis. But for this family all of the crisis are the result of the family being absolutely horrible. Siem is the featured character. We wander through different time frames and view points. It serves to obscure rather than enlighten. At first, Aaron appears to be the everyman character. He seems to stand in for the reader. But then his story line gets crazy. Literally.

The story is very very long. The pace is plodding but feels even slower because of the content. Some of the conrent is quite lurid. But the sexuality manages to come off as more of a tedious detail than purient. The story feels very much like angsty kid trying to be at once shocking and deep. In aiming to be profound Buwalda manages only to be profoundly frustrating.

Do Not Want To Spend Any More Time On Bonita Avenue
By Susan K. Schoonover
I rarely give up on a book that I have agreed to read and review but I have on BONITA AVENUE. Perhaps it is a bad translation from the Dutch, too many unreliable narrators with their different threads of storyline or possibly the hype praising this new novel as an international sensation raised my expectations too high. For what ever reason I just don't see the "brilliance" and instead find a confusing, pretentious mess. I am willing to concede the possibility that at the present time I am just feeling too lazy and overwhelmed to take the time and patience to find the merits others have discovered. For those who love it wonderful but I don't even like it and am not willing to waste any more of my precious reading time on Bonita Avenue.

Nice Horror Quickie
By Cindi - On Top Down Under Book Reviews
I love a good horror story so when I saw this on Amazon, I took a chance on an author I've not read before. There's not a whole lot to it at only a few pages, but the ending didn't leave me wanting.

The story starts with Megan being terrorized by her former professor, who also happened to be her lover once upon a time. She had ended the relationship about a year before and to say he didn't take it well would be an understatement. I can't say more than that without giving the whole story away. I will say that it was an entertaining read, though it wasn't as dark or violent as I expected. Oh, the violence is there and it's not pretty, but it's by no means extreme.

This is a nice horror short with a really neat twist at the end. True horror readers will love it. I look forward to checking out more by this author.

I like the universal message in
By Wendell Booth
Shaun Hupp has done it again. It's another enjoyable, demented, suspenseful, tale. A jilted lover goes over the deep end, with a twist--or is it two? Intense dialogue between Megan and Nick. By the end of the story, I wasn't sure how many villains there were. Whether intentional or not, I like the universal message in, "I Will Make You Love Me": That there are similarities in different types of relationships. I may hesitate, the next few times I use duct tape.

Fantastic little tale
By Catzoomi Hudson
For a short story, this certainly packed an almighty punch.

I was all set to moan about it being the usual 'female being held by stalker-ish boyfriend-wannabe'fayre. There are a plethora of tales using the same formula and I wasn't expecting anything new from this one. However, Hupp pulled it out the bag and surprised the hell out of me.

Fantastic little tale. More like this please, Shaun! :)

One of my favorites
By Patricia Gligor
The Moon Mystery Series by Helen Haught Fanick is one of my favorite mystery series and "Moonflowers" is a wonderful addition to the series. I love following Kathleen and Andrea as they become involved in solving one mystery after the other.
This time, one of their neighbors, Mary Taylor, who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, has asked the sisters to look into the mysterious disappearance of her older sister, Cora, that happened many years ago. At first, Kathleen and Andrea don't hold out much hope of discovering what happened but they are determined to give it their best shot.
If you haven't read this series yet, I highly recommended you do!

more moon madness!
By gamester
A woman missing for 54 years. Ghostly sightings. This book had me from the first page.

Elderly sisters Andrea and Kathleen are amateur sleuths in the small town of Pine Summit.
They are asked by the sister of the missing woman to find out what happened.

And so we, the readers, are off on another adventure with Andrea and Kathleen.
Lots of suspects, an inept sheriff. A real page turner!

This latest book in the Moon Mystery series is the best yet and I am looking forward to the next book.

The Blue Journal: A Detective Anthony Walker Novel, by L.T. Graham

When one of Randi Conway’s psychotherapy patients is found dead of a gunshot wound, the investigation is turned over to Detective Anthony Walker.

Formerly a New York City cop, Walker now serves on the police force of an affluent community in Fairfield County, Connecticut.  He lives among the privileged gentry, where he understands that appearances are often far removed from reality.  This certainly proves to be true in the death of Elizabeth Knoebel, when Walker discovers that she had been keeping a private journal entitled “SEXUAL RITES”.

In her diary, Elizabeth was recording the explicit details of her sexual adventures with various men, many of whom were married to the women in her therapy group.  Elizabeth was a predator bent on seducing and, in some instances, humiliating these men, obsessed with a perverse mission that Walker believes led to her murder.

As Walker uncovers the secrets of Elizabeth’s memoir, he becomes convinced that her killer is another of Randi Conway’s patients.

But which one?

“A riveting and unrelenting look into the darker foibles of the human heart.”

—THE BIG THRILL

“A taut, twisty, and terrific psychological thriller about what happens when the curtain is pulled back on affluent suburbia. Featuring a terrific hero who’s like Robert Parker’s Jesse Stone on steroids, it will leave you closing the blinds even while wondering if anyone is trying to peek through them. Brilliantly conceived and wondrously timely.”

—JON LAND, USA Today–bestselling author of Strong Darkness

Head and Shoulders
By G$
The Blue Journal was referred by a great friend who always finds interesting books. I found this tale of familiar characters gripping from start to finish. The deception/dishonesty/mystery surrounding the string of events intertwined amongst several married couples made for a terrific read. Provocative characters, fast paced story telling, and a healthy dose of erotic encounters combine to make this a first class story / head and shoulders above similar genre works. Hoping there is more from LT Graham and another tale of Detective Walker.

Show of Force, by Charles D. Taylor

As the two largest, most powerfully equipped naval fleets in history move slowly toward each other near Islas Piedras–an American missile site in the Indian Ocean that threatens Russia's grip on the Middle East–two men stand in the darkened control rooms of their ships. David Charles and Alex Kupinsky are worried because, as the admirals of these fleets, they may be responsible for all-out nuclear war. They are also concerned because once, a long time ago, they were the best of friends…

As Admirals Charles and Kupinsky face imminent disaster, forced to make their moves on the chessboard of modern warfare, we look back over their pasts as men of peace and men of war. David Charles learned the hard way in the tragic Bay of Pigs, on the treacherous rivers of Vietnam, and in the backrooms of embassies around the world. Alex Kupinsky was raised by the man who watched his father die in World War II–the same man who has since become Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union.

Moving from the real past to the possible future, from romantic memories of the women left behind to hard action on the high seas, SHOW OF FORCE is the story of men turned warriors, of a world turned battlefield. And as communications break down between Washington, Moscow, and the fleets themselves, it becomes the story of two men with the power to stop that ultimate folly of the mighty, World War III.

So much wrong....
By Brooks A Rowlett
Many reviewers talk about this book favorably, about its battle scenes and technology descriptions, some even considering it as an equal to Clancy's naval scenes in Hunt for Red October or Red Storm Rising. As someone who worked for the Navy in this era and had considerable familiarity with the weapon systems of the time, I found this book to be based on serious misunderstandings of modern naval warfare weapon systems and tactics. With the revelations of performances of Soviet systems and naval though post-Cold War, the book looks even worse to me now. Even at the time I thought this book was a good reason to NOT bother with any of the author's other works, as I found the technical errors - and the plot was driven in many ways by tactics based on these incorrect understandings of the technology - so gross and misleading, that I knew I had learned nothing useful about modern naval warfare by reading this novel. To give some comparison, consider that if you were reading one of the age of sail naval warfare novelists like Forrester or Pope and their description of weapons and tactics of that era was badly wrong, how much would it matter if the overall plot was entertaining? Some wouldn't care, but some would - I fall into that latter category. In short, a book I chose to dispose of, as its entertainment value was more than counterbalanced by knowing that things simply couldn't happen the way described.... Including the ending, which made me think of Dorothy Parker's classic book review saying "This is not a book to put down lightly - it should be thrown away with great force." I truly felt that way when I reached the last page.

A classic description of modern naval warfare
By C. J. McAllister
This was Taylor's first novel, written while the Soviet navy was still a dominant force on the world's seas. It is set in a "near future" in which two US and Soviet naval battle groups meet and engage in a remote corner of the globe. Taylor creates a well detailed picture of modern naval warfare, describing both the high speed engagements of computer driven missile duels and the thoughts of the opposing task force commanders as they manuever, attempting to anticipate each other's moves in a deadly chess-like game. The author is superb at illustrating both the awesome power and the severe weaknesses of carrier battle groups. The characters are believable and sympathetic. There are many heroes but no villains, just warriors demonstrating great courage as they serve their respective countries. The book is out of print and 25 years old, but it is well worth reading for the excellent descriptions of naval battles and for its reminder of the lesson that military veterans know only too well: that warfare is bloody and deadly, and should be entered as a last resort and for only the best and most necessary reasons.

Not Up to Par Then - And Especially Now!
By Master Hahn
I read this book years ago (early 1980s when it first came out) via a library loan.

Too many typo and technical errors. And errors of even fictionalized "facts".

Plus rated the Soviet Navy WAY above its then believed capabilities - much less what turned out to be its true capabilities.

Post Cold War analysis showed that NONE of the Soviet military capabilities were remotely as potent as we were being lead to believe (pumped up fictional analysis by the CIA combined by disinformation by the Soviets).

Makes for a poor story.

Plus... what did the U.S. admiral learn from his experiences with his involvement with the Bay of Pigs (no naval engagements at all) and Vietnam (basically naval air campaigns and some naval gunfire ground support... no real naval engagements)?

What the eye sees is not always as one believes it to be. This thriller leads to food for thought at the end of each of it's twists of plot.

Thriller 2: On the Edge Looking Back

Following the adventure in book one, James is at a loss when another murder with the same MO is committed and he realizes that he has framed the wrong man. He has to make a decision, either to let his colleagues know that he planted the knife which caused the guilty verdict on Bradley or to simply put things right by finding the killer of his friend, Jade.

Bradley's suicide in jail fills him with remorse, although fired by the faces of parents who have lost their children, James is determined to put an end to the story by putting the serial killer out of action permanently. Will he succeed? Will he be found out for planting the evidence? What will spur him on in his inquiries and what will these reveal. Will Claudia become the next victim? Book 2 of the series follows the story to its final conclusion. Will there be a positive outcome or will the killer escape justice one more time?

Thriller 3: The Irony of Justice

When a cold-blooded murderer reaches the end of his sentence, Detective Will Jenkins receives a call he never thought he would have to. The killer's voice was one he was never likely to forget. This was a killer who killed indiscriminately and whose victims ranged from adults to infants in their cradle.

Will Jenkins knew that law had not served out the kind of justice that a man like Hoody Wilson deserved. Now, upon freedom from his 25 year sentence, Hoody was out to kill the detective who had been largely responsible for his imprisonment. Will the detective be able to get this killer before too many lives are taken? Will he be able to put him behind bars for life?

Readers will find the answers to their questions as they read through the pages that make up this tale. The strong emotions, the emotional weakness and the hidden strengths within all of us would dictate how we would deal with such a life threatening situation. Has Detective Jenkins got what it takes to put an end to this story of killing, a story that has haunted him since seeing the corpse of a baby within its cradle all those years ago? Only time will tell whether justice will be done.

Thriller 4: A Trick of Fate - Rough Justice

When Emma Bernard is found dead in her bath, the old woman is found to have a haunted past. Detectives Jim Becket, and his partner, Detective Peggy Walters, are left with a conundrum. Who had a motive? What was the purpose of the killing? The dark secrets of Emma's past are revealed and the potential list of suspects is still short and unconvincing. Will Detective Jim Becket find Emma Bernard's killer? Lets find out.....

Very Good Book!
By Mohammed
I love the way this book has all my favorite genres in it. I am a big fan of scary books and it has become a lot harder to find good books in this genre. But this one knocks it out the park, the way the suspense is built is amazing and the pacing of the book keeps the reader interested the whole time. My only con about this book is that is it not longer, i read the whole thing in one night. I hope this author realeases more books like this soon. I cant get enough!

Fairly weak and Predictable
By Paul Johnson
The storylines are pretty shallow, and the plots uninspiring. These novellas, are incredibly short, with little time spent on characterization. Not recommended.

In the Waters of Time, by Bette Lischke

In author Bette Lischke's mesmerizing novel, In the Waters of Time, a young woman learns that sometimes one's soul gets a second chance for love. Lischke blends history, mystery, romance, tragedy and love in a luminous story of two women whose lives and souls are linked across time and sea.

In modern day Portland, Maine, Jane Eliot is a sensitive young wife haunted by vivid, disturbing dreams -- and by grief over her inability to conceive. During a holiday on Peaks Island, Jane's dreams multiply and intensify, pulling her into a dark current of visions that surge through her waking hours. Mesmerized, Jane sees through the eyes of Elizabeth, a young Victorian woman who recklessly abandons her marriage and children in pursuit of love. As Jane re-lives the passion and calamity of Elizabeth's last days, she struggles to chart her own course for life.

In the Waters of Time sweeps readers from the fresh air of the New England coast, to the claustrophobic, squalid quarters of an Irish immigrant sailing ship and back, in a transformational tale that explores the power of attraction across lives -- and the possibilities for love in the present when the waters of time recede.

Time travel at its best!
By Donna Seim, Author of Asante Sana Tanzania
"In The Waters of Time" is an absolute must read! The author, Bette Lischke, keeps the storyline compelling while artfully taking the reader back and forth through layers of time. I found myself mesmerized by the captivating character of 19th-century Elizabeth; the rich detail of her person and life as mother, teacher, and lover. The description of the 19th-century workhouse where she taught is powerful. Her story is revealed through modern day Jane's dreams like pieces of a puzzle. She finds Elizabeth torn between her love of her children and her desperate decisions to find happiness. Tormented by her dreams and physical symptoms, Jane begins an incredible journey to release herself from the binds of past spirits and seek her spiritual freedom. "In The Waters of Time", Lischke, does a phenomenal job juggling a chain of lives (spirits) and the intricate way they touch upon each other. I fell captive, crashing and rolling with the waves until the unveiling of the delicate and deeply touching finale.

3.5 stars: A promising premise, but disjointed
By Cissa
A woman is haunted in both dreaming and waking life by someone who lived around 100 years previously. Hallucinations? Ghosts? Memories of a prior life?

This is coupled with various more mundane problems, such as her miscarriages, her disinterest in her job, an annoying set of tics in her right hand that prevent her from creating art (though not, apparently, from doing other things that require facility) and feeling a rift between herself and her husband.

The pacing did not work for me.

We start out with Jane, a modern American woman, who is having dreams and visions of Elizabeth, a Victorian British woman, as well as her spastic hand, her sleepwalking and sleep-drawing, etc.

At first, this novel focused on Jane and her problems. But the middle third or so was all about Elizabeth, which is also a reasonably interesting story, but the author abandons Jane for that time.

After Elizabeth dies (not a spoiler, because no Victorian woman would have survived to now), we revert to Jane, who just so happens to meet a spiritualist hypnotherapist with whom she has amazing results immediately, including a lot of the cliched "white light" and "There are NO coincidences!" -- which, frankly, strikes me as terrifying. In short order her various problems are resolved; she understands that everything has worked out for the best; and most of her social and family circle turn out to be compadres in a spiritual group dedicated to evolving toward the Light over the centuries. The first part -- Jane haunted by visions -- made sense. As it progressed, though, the novel became less and less plausible for one who does not share the spiritualism that the author depicts.

Although the narrative is grounded by a lot of physical details, they are often not explained, and the consequences are often not addressed. Anyway, miracles for me need to be plausible miracles. This narrative is too disjointed to provide that. I wish it had been better; the premise is sound and it starts out promising, but derails.

I received this novel via Rambles.net in exchange for a fair and honest review.

TIME TRAVEL EXPLORED IN A THOUGHT-PROVOKING AND SENSITIVE METAPHYSICAL NOVEL
By L. C. Henderson
The intensity of In the Waters of Time lies in its exploration of the pathways taken by two women who live life in the same body, one, Elizabeth, who finds a meaningful existence in the arms of her lover, despite the grim surrounds of a Victorian workhouse, and the other, Jane, who flees her unfulfiling life in the modern-day corporate world to find a more personal sense of contentment in reshingling a friend’s home. Both of the characters have much in common, including a love for children, who are described in joyful detail, and their yearning to express themselves creatively. Elizabeth encourages the poverty-stricken and abused children in the workhouse to draw in colored chalk on the walls of their school room, while Jane finds an innate sense of accord in the world of interior decoration and design. No wonder, then, that one finds that the author of this metaphysical novel, Bette Lischke, is a well-known dowser and watercolorist who takes a keen interest in all things spiritual. Like Jane, she, too, has worked as an executive recruiter, and her own love for children is shown by the fact not only did she once work as a nanny, but also by her writing of numerous songs for children.

The Jungian influences on Lischke’s work are clear, in that the narrative is primarily focused on Jane, who lives in modern-day Portland, Maine, and who is able, first through dreams, and then by means of a steadily increasing emergence of her subconscious through her waking moments, to become ever more emotionally and spiritually in touch with what one assumes to be her previous life, as the initially socially constrained and duty-bound Elizabeth. As the flashbacks to her earlier existence become increasingly more powerful, Jane’s awareness of her own innermost conflicts in the present day develops in its intensity. By being open to her presence in this world on an earlier occasion, Jane is able to reconcile herself to the demands that are made on her in the present day.

In the Waters of Time is a genre-crossing (containing elements of history and mystery, as well as romance) and deeply sensitive portrayal of the role of women who wish to avoid the constrictions and restrictions that society has, for so long, sought to impose upon them. Lischke’s poetic use of imagery mirrors her depth of feeling, and anyone who appreciates the lyrical descriptiveness of the English language is bound to be sensitive to the nuances of this text. Do not expect the commonplace and mundane from In the Waters of Time, and you will not be disappointed. This novel is for all lovers of romance and the unexpected, who can appreciate sound character development and a well-written exposé of the human spirit as it travels through time.

Was Lisa Jackson’s disappearance related to politics, her husband’s affair, or her long-term infertility?

Ben Jackson is going head to head with Jonathan Cleary in Cape Refuge’s mayoral race—and he’s even expected to win—when his wife Lisa turns up missing the day before the major debate. Suddenly the town is in turmoil as proof of an alleged affair surfaces, indicating that Ben Jackson might have had motive to kill his wife.

Meanwhile, newspaper owner Blair Owens has other suspicions—and so does Police Chief Cade. Together they dig deeply into the mysterious disappearance that soon spirals into a web of confusion, dark secrets, and unsettling fraud.

Then the town’s psychic reveals the location of Lisa’s body—at the bottom of the river. Even though Blair doesn’t believe his paranormal gift is real, she can’t imagine how he knew where the body was.

The small-town scandal quickly turns into a national media event. Is the murderer one of the obvious suspects . . . or someone they have no reason to dou?

From Publishers Weekly
This well-crafted suspense novel picks up immediately following the second installment in the Cape Refuge series: Blair has just become a Christian and a newspaper owner; Morgan struggles with infertility; and Jonathan faces two opponents in his quest to become the mayor of Cape Refuge, their small Georgia island town. When the wife of one of Jonathan's opponents goes missing, among those the chief of police suspects are the third mayoral candidate (who is, unsurprisingly, an atheist), a prosperous fertility doctor and a local psychic who appears to have uncanny knowledge about the case. Despite some didactic moments (a biblical exposition of the dangers of divination, for example), the novel manages to be more plot-driven than message-driven, a step forward for evangelical Christian suspense. Numerous red herrings in the meticulously plotted story will keep readers guessing, and they will be delighted by the skillful surprise ending.

From the Back Cover
The man Lisa Jackson loved most may have betrayed her. Another used deception to manipulate her. But did one of them kill her? Ben Jackson is sure to defeat Jonathan Cleary in Cape Refuge's mayoral race, until his wife turns up missing the day before a major debate. Suspecting foul play, Police Chief Cade launches an island-wide search. But it takes a psychic's 'vision' to point police to the riverside---and Lisa's body. The evidence implicating Ben in his wife's murder is convincing. But as a local scandal escalates into a national media circus, Cade's instincts tell him to dig deeper. And he's not the only one. Blair Owens of the Cape Refuge Journal is using her investigative skills to uncover a rat's nest of dirty secrets---and more than one person with a motive for murder. But Blair's methods are jeopardizing her relationship with Cade, and an unsolicited prediction from the psychic only adds to her troubles. Is the man's so-called gift truly from God, as he claims? Did Lisa's murder have anything to do with the mayoral race, her husband's alleged affair, or her decade-long struggle with infertility? Whoever the killer is, he's about to take his evasion of justice to the next, lethal level. And someone else is going to die.

Lots of plot twists
By Sarah N. Horton
I say Terri Blackstock has done it again. I just love how she can create a suspensful, exciting novel that incorporates characters that are full of faith, but also human. This latest book, River's Edge, is right on par with her previous work. The book has more plot twists than I expected leaving an exciting ending. The characters are well developed, and while many of them have Christian faiths, they are all still human and real. I especially loved Terri's inclusion of the topic of infertility. This topic is rarely discussed in the fiction world, and speaking from personal experience, I was delighted with her coverage. The women's struggles in this book were very realistic. I say it is a great read.

A truly good plot twist elevates this book
By Barbara L. Lemaster
This is the third in Blackstock's Cape Refuge series. She writes a decent mystery and the ending is brilliant, but her characterizations occasionally fall flat. Morgan really annoyed me in this book, because she behaves as a super-Christian with no faults at all. She's totally emotion-driven and apparently doesn't understand the basics of logic or reasoning. Not all Christians are like that. Meanwhile, her sister Blair (a better overall character) has taken over the newspaper and is writing about the murder of a prominent local politician's wife, but this causes her to clash occasionally with Matthew Cade, the police chief and the man she's deeply in love with.

There's an interesting subplot about IVF and infertility, which bored me since I had two kids the good old-fashioned way and I have married friends who are childfree. I have never understood women and men who put having a baby as the be-all, end-all of their lives. I certainly don't know any Christians who think that way. Some Christians deliberately decide to forsake having children in order to share in missionary work, but Morgan's job on this earth is, apparently, to be a mother. At several points in the book, I wanted to reach into the pages and slap her.

Sheila Caruso is another fairly well developed character. She's a reformed (?) drug addict who's released from prison early and is attempting to start a new life at Hanover House with her children, Sadie and Caleb. She behaves in a fairly predictable manner, but she's at least realistic.

The book is far more plot-driven than message-driven, but there is good counsel on why Christians avoid psychics and mediums and what it means to engage in spiritual warfare with the weaponry Paul described in Ephesians. All in all, a satisfying read.
