An Unlamented Death (The Dr Adam Bascom Mysteries Book 1), by William Savage

A gripping historical murder mystery involving Dr Adam Bascom, a young physician who, one morning in 1791, trips over a body in a local churchyard. He sees at once that the dead man is a gentleman, well dressed and prosperous. The local vicar, summoned to bring help, recognises the victim at once. It is the Archdeacon of Norwich! Subsequent examination shows the man was not robbed or subjected to obvious violence. What brought him to such a remote and unlikely spot? Who might he have met? How did he die? Adam’s mind is full of questions, but when an inquest is held, it soon becomes clear the authorities are intent on accepting the death as a bizarre accident to prevent further investigation.

Adam’s curiosity and sense of justice cannot accept this. He has no standing that would allow him to become involved formally, so he uses friends, old and new, unexpected contacts and even his own mother to help him get to the truth. As he does so, he finds himself drawn into the murky world of espionage and extremism.

“An Unlamented Death” is the first book in a series following the career of Dr. Adam Bascom in the often surprising world of late-Georgian England. As the country slides into war with Revolutionary France and the future looks ever darker, Adam must find his way into a new life and a most unexpected set of talents.

“I could imagine myself walking in the country towns of Norfolk by the inquisitive doctor.”

“Entering ‘An Unlamented Death’ is like stepping into an 18th-century drawing room.”

“...a fascinating visit into the past, combined with an intriguing mystery solved by an empathetic hero...”

A treasured visit to another time.

I loved this book. A real treat with historical accuracy and a glance into the lives of those living at that time meant that from the beginning my curiosity was piqued. The plot is well structured and both the characters and the story kept me engaged and always wanting to read on. I hope there will be many more like it.

Excellent and well appreciated...

Love this author's writings. Love that I found a new author that can actually write! I just finished reading his other book, The Fabric of Murder (loved it), and immediately downloaded this one. I was not disappointed. Although the characters in both books are completely unrelated, both books take place in mid 1700's England. The main character here is Dr. Adam Bascom...young, intelligent, kindhearted, and very curious. His curiosity leads him to investigate the death of a local magistrate whereupon he meets not only stonewalling amongst the powers that be, but also some persons of interest and some very interesting persons. The characters in this book are fully developed with clearly defined unique personalities. The story is complex but not unbelievable nor confusing. One secondary character made me think of Sherlock Holmes in his style and manner. The atmosphere the author develops in the dialogue, settings, politics and character personalities enabled me to easily visualize that era. Of course there are numerous typos, it's a Kindle edition, but most tend to not distract me. I will definitely be following this author's writings, as I presume and hope this book is also the first in a series. Both main characters of author William Savage are excellent. Ashmole Foxe in The Fabric of Murder and Dr. Adam Bascom here. I wonder if Mr. Savage intends to bring them together in one book at some point in time. It will be a delight to keep reading his future books and find out. That is if these do become series which I do hope they will....(hint, hint to Mr. Savage).

A quiet masterpiece

I wasn't sure about this book at first; it's written in the style of literature of its time, which took me a while to settle into. Then, at around 10%, it began to 'click'.

Young doctor Adam Bascom comes across a body in a churchyard, which he soon finds out to be that of a person of some importance. A verdict of accidental death is given swiftly, but Adam believes that the truth is being covered up. Much of the story is about his unravelling of the mystery, but this is far from all there is to it.

I loved reading this book, it's beautifully written. Some of the phrases were so delightful I lingered over them; the charm of the novel is as much in the prose as in the plot, if not more so. Its real strength is in the subtle yet acute characterisation; the entertaining apothecary and ladies' man Lassimer, garrulous old seafarer Captain Mimms, the society ladies who took tea with Adam's mother. Witty and entertaining asides are made, clever observations about human nature. The 18th century is not one of 'my' eras, so it was good to learn more about it, too, in particular the social structure and pretensions, the problems resulting from religious prejudices, the criminal element and corruption within the higher echelons of society and the church.

The story takes place in North Norfolk, an area I know well - I used to work in Holt, and recognised the names of all the pubs, and also The Black Boys in Aylsham. The domestic descriptions and those of the problems of travel were most interesting to read about, too.

If I have any complaint it's that on occasion I felt that the solving of the case was a little lengthy and repetitive, and there is one section with lots of backwards apostrophes that did not make for easy reading and could so easily be remedied, but on the whole I'd recommend this book to anyone whose preferences lie in this direction, and I am pleased to award it 5 stars, something I do not do lightly. If you find it a little slow to start with, do stick with it—it's worth it. I will most definitely read another book by this author.
