About the Author
Mary Jane Clark worked at CBS News for nearly three decades. Her twelve KEY News media thrillers were inspired by that experience. Envisioning the Piper Donovan/Wedding Cake mystery series, Mary Jane enrolled in cake-decorating classes and researched unique wedding locations. The daughter of an FBI agent and a mother who customized cakes for the neighborhood kids when she was growing up, Mary Jane has two grown children and splits her time between New Jersey and Florida.

Bit of a Bland Mystery

I have never read Mary Jane Clark before, and I think it's just really not my style of writing. I found it a bit bland. The city of New Orleans was detailed fairly well, but it felt like it could have been done from brochures, tour guides and Google Earth. Having actually spent a few days in the French Quarter and around Royal Street, the writing doesn't do it justice. A lot of what you learn about the city is told to you as a reader rather than gleaned or experienced through the characters. And, for some reason in the book, people take taxis everywhere. I saw people taking the bus, trollies, or walking. I didn't see people just stepping out and hailing cabs like you see in New York.
Most chapters are no more than three pages long, technically only one and a half if you account for the chapter heading and the ends of chapters stopping half-way down a page - overall, due to the chapter spacing, the print book probably has a 100 total pages of white space. Also, I felt like every other chapter ended with a soap-opera cliff hanger: "Maybe she was totally wrong. Maybe she wasn't." "It wouldn't hurt to warn (her), would it?"
I was still ok with the story until the end. Most reviewers have praised the fact that no one saw the identity of the murderer coming. That's exactly my problem with it. I felt like it came so far out of left field that it didn't make sense. It wasn't a plot twist where you can look back and think oh my gosh how did I not realize this… it all makes sense now… The motive was vastly disproportionate to the crime in my opinion.

After her last adventure in Sarasota, FL, where she was poisoned and temporarily paralyzed, baker and actress Piper Donovan is looking forward to a working vacation in the city of New Orleans.
This latest episode finds her in the Big Easy shortly before the start of the city’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, a colorful and festive affair. She is scheduled to work with the great Bertrand Olivier, co-owner and chef baker of the renowned Boulangerie Bertrand, a grand and well-known bakery in the French Quarter. She is looking forward to learning from him, as well as sharing her ideas for a couple’s wedding cake.
But Piper’s supposedly restful week in the Big Easy turns into a nerve-wracking time shortly after her arrival. Even though she came to New Orleans to work in the bakery, while there she gets an opportunity to audition for, and be in, an upcoming feature film. Then, as if that’s not exciting enough, a killer starts a murder spree. The first victim is the owner of a deli just down the street from the bakery. The next victim is Bertrand himself.
The MO for the murders are completely different, but both crime scenes are marked with magical symbols (a whip for the first murder and an egg on top of white flour for the second one), suggesting that the killer is a practitioner of hoodoo, which is similar to voodoo. But hoodoo is not a religion; it emphasizes magic and its various symbols.
Even though Piper has done some amateur sleuthing in the past (that’s how she wound up in trouble during her last adventure), she swears she is not going to get involved this time. But, as you may have guessed, she can’t help herself: she inadvertently discovers that the first two murders are connected. Will there be a third murder? Will she be able to stop it in time? And does the murderer really practice hoodoo, or is he or she trying to throw authorities off the trail by leaving magical clues?
Author Mary Jane Clark keeps to her tried-and-true formula for the series, that of putting Piper in the middle of a murder scene and then having her get involved in some way. Clark also mixes cooking and baking techniques into the text and includes the recipe for Boulangerie Bertrand Beignets at the end of the book.
If you’re a fan of the series, you should definitely read this latest entry. If you’re not, you would probably still enjoy the book as a stand-alone, but it would be more enjoyable if you read at least one or two of the previous installments before digging into this tasty treat.

That Old Black Magic

This is book 4 in the Piper Donovan series by Mary Jane Clark. Its an excellent mystery and the best so far of the series. That said, this should not be read as a stand alone. There are too many references to previous adventures of the main characters to read it without reading the other books in the series. The main character,, Piper Donovan, is in New Orleans to work with a famous chef to learn more about baking. Not only is she a baker and an actress but she seems to land in the middle of some murders. The book is fast paced and you don't know who the bad guy is until almost the end. This series just keeps getting better and better
