The Strange Michael Folmer Affair, by John Rigbey

JOHN RIGBEY's first novel “THE STRANGE MICHAEL FOLMER AFFAIR” is now available in paperback. Circa 2003 and following the savage murder of a prostitute in London's East End, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Gregory of New Scotland Yard is deputed to investigate what proves to be the emergence of a crazed serial killer bent on emulating the crimes of nineteenth century Jack the Ripper. With his marriage failing and plagued by self-doubt, Gregory pits his wits against the killer, but when the fingerprints on a letter sent to the Yard are found to be identical to those of a man hanged for murdering a prostitute fifty years earlier – a scientific impossibility – the investigation takes an unprecedented turn. As Gregory pieces together the fragile threads of the case, the reader follows him through the slums of Victorian London to the West End of the fifties and on to the present day, culminating with the shocking and grisly final attempt of the killer to replicate the last murder of his 1888 predecessor. Written by a former Metropolitan Police criminal investigator, “Folmer” allows a fascinating insight into modern forensic investigation, as well as examining the Victorian crimes and the appalling circumstances of day to day life in the London slums. Coming to know the the modern serial killer, the reader watches as he descends into the pit of insanity and slowly comes to know the misery of his childhood and the various catalysts which have set him on the road to evil. “Folmer” may not suit the squeamish, but it is an essential read for all lovers of crime fiction in general and “Ripperologists” in particular. As one reviewer (Amazon) writes: “Buy this one at Heathrow and you won't put it down till you get to JFK!”

A ripping good tale
By Bob Sanchez
In London, women are turning up dead, their disfigured corpses bringing to mind the horrors of Jack the Ripper over a century earlier. Someone is following the Ripper's pattern, killing on the anniversaries of his crimes as though paying homage to the monster. But instead of helping police find the new killer, fingerprint clues point to a man long dead.

The Strange Michael Folmer Affair is a mix of British police procedural and psychological thriller that spares no grisly detail--be forewarned of that. Author John Rigbey tells us precisely what this 21st-century ripper does to his female victims, and it's disgusting. But separate that from the story itself, which is well paced and pulls the reader in even as the crimes repel. My only minor issue is the graphic repetition--if Rigbey dishes all the gore with the first victim, we can reasonably assume it's equally bad with the second, third, and fourth. Yet we get the detail every time. Enough already.

But that's my only reservation. If you enjoy crime novels and can stomach the pure evil of a Ripper wannabe, then read this one. Rigbey is good.

Ripping Good Story
By Ralph Vaughan
This book by former Scotland Yard officer John Rigbey is a delight for Ripperologists, but the expertly crafted police procedural will also find fans amongst crime readers not at all well versed in the atrocities of Jack the Ripper back in 1888. Indeed, Detective Chief Inspector Michael Gregory, the protagonist, himself knows very little about the details of Leather Apron's crimes at the beginning of the book, but as events occur with rapidity he must learn quickly...if he has a hope in hell in stopping a madman who is using Jack's crimes as a template for his own murders in modern London.

Although DCI Gregory must find the man who is now killing prostitutes in the East End he finds himself drawn back to earlier avatars of London, not just the squalid Whitechapel and Spitalfields districts of Victorian London, but London of the 1950's, where the pattern of the Jack the Ripper murders started for a second time. To solve his modern mystery, Gregory must find the connections between all three sets of murders, must discover how a man hanged in the 1950's can leave fingerprints in the 2000's, and solve the mystery of...who is Michael Folmer? To do so, he must sift through numerous red herrings, uncover secrets hid by years of obfuscation, and overcome his own fears and weaknesses.

Although this is an extremely well-written and ingenuously plotted book that maintains a driving sense of suspense, terror and mystery from beginning to end, it is the character of DCI Michael Gregory, aided by a solid cast of characters, which makes this police procedural work, and made it so appealing to me. The police procedural is the toughest of the mystery sub-genres because the writer has to get every detail right and maintain the proper atmosphere without sacrificing an iota of entertainment. John Rigbey is spot-on all the way through. As mentioned, though, it is DCI Gregory who is at the heart of the story, and were his character not as strongly written as it is, the story would suffer. This is the first of the DCI Gregory books, but the second I've read; each story can stand on its own, but having seen Gregory at the beginning, when his marriage is breaking up and he is throwing himself into his work, I have a better appreciation for the man.

For those who like police procedurals, especially those involving the legendary Scotland Yard, this book is brilliant. And if you also like good story telling, engaging characters, and Jack the Ripper this is a book you will certainly want to add to your library.

Masterful Plotting, Powerful Storytelling
By John Gaynard
The Strange Michael Folmer Affair opens in 2003 in the sordid back streets and poor pubs around London's infamous King's Cross railway station, and with the murder of a prostitute who was down on her luck even before she met the man who would kill her. Her body is found in the same street as Jack the Ripper's first murder victim back in 1888. The autopsy shows that the woman was murdered and defiled in a way nearly identical to the way the Ripper treated his first victim. The killing of this prostitute is followed by a mocking letter to the London police force. Eight fingerprints are found on the letter and they all correspond to the prints of a man who had been hanged in 1958, for committing at least one copycat Jack the Ripper slaying, and possibly more.

After a second grisly murder, which takes place on the same day of the calendar year as the original Jack the Ripper's second crime, the team of detectives under Detective Chief Inspector Michael Gregory finds itself faced with a race against time. They know that the new Ripper will kill on the same days as the man he is copying, and leave the bodies in the same London streets, but in spite of the way they manage to lock down London on the dates in question they can't stop the 2003 Ripper from dropping the bodies wherever he wishes. While investigating three threads to the dilemma--the original Ripper murders, the alias and previous form of the man who killed between the end of WWII and his execution in 1958, and the murders that are happening nearly in front of their eye--they have to deal with a rumor-mongering press that could stymie the investigation. Two of their biggest challenges are to overcome their own skepticism about repeat crimes and the foolproofness of scientific evidence.

The author of The Strange Michael Folmer Affair is John Rigbey, a retired London CID officer. This novel was first published in 2008. The area around King's Cross and Saint Pancras railway stations has now been redeveloped and bears no resemblance to what it was in 2003, but as soon as I began to read Rigbey's book I found the sights and smells of King's Cross as I first saw the broken-down area in the 1970s. Rigbey does the same job of description for London in 1888, where the pubs, the drunken prostitutes, the destitute working men and their cheap lodging houses nearly jump out of the pages at you.

Some of Rigbey's descriptions of London in the late 19th century reminded me of Patrick Suskind's rendering of medieval Paris in his 1985 novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, where you are torn between how well the odors of poverty in the City are described and your own revulsion at what is being described. The plotting of the novel is never less than sure-footed and the storytelling is powerful. Rigbey's experience as a London policeman is evident throughout, both in his description of the policemen and women caught up in the investigation, while trying to exercise a modicum of control over their own lives, and his sympathy for the hapless people who are both the victims and perpetrators of crime. There were still a few typos in the Kindle version I read, but don't let them put you off this masterful novel.
