In Perez-Giese's (Pac Heights, 2013) gritty mystery, a man upends his life to search for his estranged younger sibling, who's gone missing in Juarez, Mexico.
This densely populated, darkly comic tale starts off with a wallop: "The Mexican punched me so hard that I said my mother's name, which is interesting, because I don't like my mother." This isn't just an easy gag, as family dynamics are at the heart of this south-of-the-border adventure, which has atmosphere to burn.
Jon Lennox, an unhappily married Colorado lawyer, ventures to El Paso after his brother, Chris, a real estate agent--and, in Jon's estimation, a total screw-up--is apparently kidnapped. But several things about the case don't add up. If Chris was abducted, why is there no ransom demand? And if Chris, as one private investigator theorizes, "might have been involved in some things not pertaining to real estate," then why hasn't his body been found?
Perez-Giese evocatively immerses readers in the ethical morass and moral vacuum of the border drug wars, using local authorities to orient readers on who the players are, how they operate, and the stakes involved. He also has a good eye, and nose, for setting a scene: "The room smelled of microwave popcorn and disinfectant, and the phones rang without being answered," he writes of one police station waiting room. Meanwhile, tense confrontations and odd character quirks (such as a drug lord's predilection for the original Star Trek) keep the momentum going.
Entertaining, escapist fare; to paraphrase one of Perez-Giese's characters, it's a great idea with good execution.

Tony Perez-Giese was born in Texas. He attended the University of California at San Diego and currently lives and works in San Francisco. This is his second novel.

Send More Idiots is a fast paced, darkly humorous, entertaining, intricate tale of life in the treacherous borderland. Action plus humor = a big hit! I especially love the dry wit and sarcasm of the main character, Jon. (He reminds me of Nelson DeMille’s John Sutter in Gold Coast.) The unlikely friends he makes are unlike anyone you’ve ever met and turn his serious situation into a series of comical capers.
The landscape of El Paso and Juarez is so well illustrated that I feel like I've been there... And do not want to go back. (Sorry, residents of The Paso.) I absolutely loved how all of the really accurate descriptions of smells, places, and people folded me into the setting.
While hilarious, SMI is a thoughtful look into the casualties of a war involving drug cartels, international trade, and people who are just trying to get by.

Send More Idiots: A Must Read

There have been quite a few Mexican drug cartel books/movies released over the last couple years (The Counselor--movie, The Cartel--book, Cartel Land--documentary film, just to name three examples) so the subject seems to be worn a little thin. With this in mind, I was hesitant to head back south of the border for another visit with the narcotraficantes, but this book was recommended by a friend who promised it would provide a fresh take on the subject. My friend was right, because while this book’s plot does revolve around the drug trade, it takes more of an absurdest view of the matter than anything else I’ve run into.
The plot boils down to an American real estate broker getting kidnapped in Juarez, Mexico. The abductee’s brother Jon comes down to El Paso, Texas (right across the river from Juarez) to investigate, but it becomes evident right from the start that Jon could care less about solving the disappearance. What he’s mostly interested in is getting away from the loveless marriage and corporate grind that has taken over his life. But in order to make his little holiday seem legit, Jon has to at least pretend to look into the kidnapping. In the process of this charade, the reader is treated to some fairly rote background on the drug trade (the part about NAFTA being partly responsible for the cartel violence was a new idea to me though) and some fairly typical narco mayhem. What makes this book unique are the characters Jon runs into along the border and how they get involved in the search. Trust me: there are a lot more laughs here than shootouts. The character of 6-to-10 Jimmy alone is worth the read.
The author carries this humorous theme all the way to the climax, which although pretty silly, was still a very nice departure from the usual bunch of guys pointing guns at each other.

Tony Perez-Giese who thrilled us with PacHeights set in 1999 San Francisco, has done it again! Send More Idiots set in El Paso–Juárez is a page turner. The story is raw and full of surprises. What Tony calls 'Fargo on the Mexico Border' is great - loved it!
