I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Lorne as a strong female lead character. I found the plot to be gripping with tantalising hints that much more is in store. Highly recommended. by P.E.

Entertainment for a rainy afternoon

A solid police procedural plotline and a good sense of location, at least for an American reader. The characters were relatively well developed and although predictable, I found the storyline quite readable.
I did find the main character's personal life upheaval and problems given more emphasis than I like in a mystery. In fact at times that seemed to occupy much of the storyline, even overwhelming the actual plot. I also found odd inconsistencies in the main character's reactions. In particular I found the sudden switch from problems with colleagues to apparent friendship in two cases disconcerting. Particularly in the case of the French doctor, the switch from uncomfortable to close friend seemed added only to amplify the personal life turmoil of the main character rather than actually contribute anything to the plot and storyline.

Taut Mystery

"Cruel Justice" is a well-written, somewhat frightening work which includes graphic details of the serial killer's horrific deeds. The protagonist is a tough, strong-willed woman, Lorne Simpkins, who is an intelligent Detective Inspector whom you are convinced will solve the terrible murders. DI Simpkins' personal life, however, is also in conflict. She and her husband Tom have been arguing for some time. She, a workaholic, spends too much time at her job, and he is tired of being a house-husband and caring for their twelve-year daughter whom they both love. Lorne Simpkins also becomes very friendly with the ME, a handsome Frenchman. And Lorne's mentor and Chief is retiring, and his replacement is Lorne's former lover whom she jilted years before for Tom. He never forgave her for that and plans to make her professional life miserable.
This book is filled with many twists that will hold your interest throughout. In fact, I read this in two days. And, I so enjoyed this DI Simpkins character that I ordered the second book in the trilogy, "Impeding Justice."
