3.5 Stars Seen and Not Seen

The book is interesting however the first 60% of the book was this cat and mouse chase where you really never knew what was really going on. not Then at the 60% mark you find out why everyone is being chased and you continue from there. Robert the main character of the book is a billionaire with mental health issues that has moments of brilliance and cunning vs withdrawn and depressive. Shades of Howard Hughes...
The book needs a good editor, there are a lot of missing words or wrong words used. Also an editor would have had the author tightened up the first part of the book. I was almost ready to give up on it until the motivation of the story was revealed and things started to really move from there. Plus the author hints at history between characters but doesn't let you know what it was. If this was the second or third book I could understand, figuring that it was explained in previous books,however that is not the case, So you are left wondering about the history with no idea of the dynamics between the characters. Hope that it will be explained in the next book. All in all it's a decent read and will be starting the next book.

An Extended Chase Scene With Unknown Characters and An Unexplained Virus

Seen and Not Seen is a strange beginning to The Veil series. For more than the first half of the book, Robert Cantor, an eccentric billionaire and the main character of the book, delights in avoiding being served a subpoena by the FBI requiring him to appear before a Senate subcommittee. While he gets rather inventive, it still is nothing than a very long chase scene, and provides nearly nothing to the plot.
The problem, though, is that there is little plot existing to move forward. Character development on almost everyone is essentially nil, and most of the interaction between Robert and other characters is written as though the history between them all has been explained previously. Frankly, the only reason I kept reading (and went on to volume two) is because I had already read volume 3 and I knew a lot of the future.
Calling this volume one of The Veil series is truly confusing, since there is only one reference to The Veil (it is a group, by the way) in the entire first volume. Even as a setup book for the series, this book accomplishes almost nothing. Because interaction between characters is written as though we should already know what is going on, it almost implies that there was a "Book 0" of the series I missed. Stating that this book could be read as a standalone story is also misleading. It seems like the entire book is an inside joke that the reader is not part of. The opening scene makes no sense, because the background is never discussed. The final climax does have some action and interest, but much of the background and events are still poorly explained.
Structurally (and this is common between all three books), there are issues with spelling, dropped or misused words, and an occasional homonym issue (break/brake). An editor would be a welcome addition.
Overall, this is a very disappointing book that fails in its primary mission, that of making the reader want to go on in the series. The only reason I would recommend reading on at all is only because I read volume 3, and it is a fairly good story.

Start to lift The Veil with this book!

This is the first volume of a trilogy, "The Veil", which is also the title of the final installment. Each book can be read as a stand-alone novel, but they certainly tie together and reading the first two will enhance reading the end. The story has many twists and turns, all the more so since the main character has ... issues. I'll let readers find out for themselves exactly what kind. It's a great example of hard science fiction - a thing I especially like about the series is the portrayal of technology only slightly beyond what we have as I write this... things that may be just a few years away. It is also very thought-provoking like all good science fiction. Highly recommended!
