when myth meets reality

As usual, Lignor uses the known and that which is widely believed to bring together this phenomenal tale. Lignor weaves suspense through every word she puts on paper. As a reader you get so caught up in the storyline that the world around you fades away. You become part of this remarkable tale. I love how you get to travel the world alongside Lignor’s characters. You visit its historic sites and take in the surrounding religious beliefs and mythology. She brings different aspects of various religions, cultures, and mythologies together in this brilliant adventure. I found this novel to be much more profound than the previous Tallent & Lowery novels. It was also much more emotional. I felt my heart breaking for the characters at times. She even brought tears to my eyes once or twice. Of course, that`s not to say that the duo of Tallent & Lowery, as well as their comrades, didn`t make me laugh more than once. Lignor is really coming into her own with this series.

I love how intimately you get to know Lignor’s characters. Although many of them have been introduced in previous novels, they continue to grow as individuals. They also continue to be themselves. No one ever changes to become unrecognizable. I must say that I love the way that Leah’s brain works. It becomes even more apparent in this novel, & Gareth’s acceptance of it is surreal. The new characters in this novel are also quite well developed. Lignor ensures you know who they are and what their role is without overdeveloping them.

Overall, this was an amazingly captivating adventure that I couldn`t put down, and definitely can`t wait to see what comes next.

Discover the impossible with Leah and Gareth.

The author once again does an amazing job setting up the mysteries and leaving just enough hints and clues along the way to keep you guessing. I was enthralled by the exotic locations. I really enjoyed discovering new secrets along the way.

Most of all I enjoyed reading more about Leah and Gareth. Throughout the book we get to see as their relationship grows even further and even gets tested along the way. Everyone has secrets and Gareth's just may tear them apart.

I also really liked finding out more about Leah's father. They have a very interesting relationship and I really enjoyed seeing the different dynamics within it. Their interactions with one another were interesting as well and definitely brought out a lot of drama and turmoil.

New characters also brought a lot of drama as well. Especially, the new woman in the group. She is full of secrets and teaming up with her could either help them or destroy them.

Let us travel with Leah and Gareth on another fun filled adventure!

Matthews’s intricately plotted fifth Dinah Pelerin mystery (after 2013’s Her Boyfriend’s Bones) finds the American anthropologist living happily in Berlin with her Norwegian lover, counterintelligence agent Thor Ramberg, and lecturing on Native American cultures at Humboldt University. Then Dinah’s Seminole mother, Swan Calms, and Margaret Dobbs, both of whom were once married to drug dealer Cleon Dobbs, arrive to do a “little detective job.” The two women are seeking money from a criminal partner of Cleon’s, Reiner Hess, who belongs to a local club devoted to American Indians. Two attempts to kill or injure Swan and Margaret increase the pressure on them to find the elusive Hess. When a member of the Indian club is shot and scalped at a drumming ceremony, Swan becomes the prime suspect. Dinah’s subsequent sleuthing may expose her own dark secrets. Matthews makes fine use of Berlin’s turbulent history and the enduring German fascination with Indian culture. (Publishers Weekly)

Intricate international intrigue

There is a very intricate and convoluted plot in Jeanne Matthews' Where the Bones are Buried, with a solid grounding in modern Berlin.

If you can imagine a non-funny farce ... well, that's what this book reminded me of, and that's not an insult. Farces tend to be far more solidly and intricately plotted than most books, and that's perfect for a story that ranges between murder mystery and international intrigue.

Dinah is an excellent protagonist -- she's not generic, but has her own strengths and weaknesses, plus a family that is a sad trial to her. (Her family reminds me of some of the families in Jennifer Cruisie's books, but again -- not funny.) Now, I do think there were several times during this narrative that anyone sensible would have gone to the cops ... but it worked. She does grow and change, as does her boyfriend -- and it's possible that even her family will start to be more reasonable.

Much of the plot is who's scamming whom, in areas like laundered drug money, stolen artifacts and various types of history all colliding in a godawful mess. I appreciated these diverse threads! A lot of mysteries and thrillers are more focused, but here -- life intervenes, as it generally does.

My only quibble -- several scenes would have been even more effective if they were played for laughs. Like, when everyone and sundry, including some people that hate each other, descend on Dinah's small apartment to stay for unknown lengths of time. With a story that's serious and grim, if this were written for laughs it would have made a great contrast that would have emphasized both aspects.

It is a very engaging and entertaining read, with rare plot subtlety and well-drawn characters, plus an excellently twisty plot. Dinah's profession doesn't really come into it much; she's mostly wrangling relatives, but is learning and growing all the while.

I enjoyed this, and am interested in reading more in this series. This is the fifth book, but it makes a fine place to start.

This is my first exposure to Jeanne Matthews and her creation but it probably will not be my last. Dinah thinks her problems are behind her now that she is in Germany. She could not be more mistaken. Problems come looking for you. And in Dinah’s case the problem is her mother. Who becomes the prime suspect in a murder. What a cast of characters and all of them are interesting. The mystery will keep you involved as you keep flipping pages trying to figure out who did what. Ms. Matthews did a good job and I look forward to more from this talented author.

Great Mystery Series

I have read several books in the Dinah Pelerin Mystery series and I have always enjoyed them. Where the Bones Are Buried is not exception. One thing you can always count on, when you read a Poisoned Pen Press book, you know it will be well written and have a great story.

Who knew that Germans were fascinated with Native Americans to the point where they have Indian Clubs and reenactments. I enjoyed the setting of Berlin in this novel because I haven't read a lot of contemporary novels that are set there. Dinah has the most craziest families imaginable. And that does make the novel interesting! And the secrets...amongst the family and between Dinah and her boyfriend Thor. Loved when Thor's secret showed up. Plenty of plot twists to keep the reader interested. The characters are all interesting but I had a bit of trouble keeping track of all the Germans. Great ending.

Another great book in this series. Already looking forward to the next one.

Family ties and a touch of magic woven into this story make for a delightful read!

Living in an idyllic town by Niagara Falls in the mid-1800's, the Barrett family rarely faced anything more exciting than hiding a few slaves who came their way through the Underground Railroad, and turning away the occasional slave hunters. That is until the peace and quiet of the town was disrupted by some members of a gang from far-off Missouri. The last things the townspeople expected to face were murder, extortion, arson, and counterfeiting.

EXCELLENT READ

BETRAYED lives up to all of the great books by this author. It has twists and unexpected turns throughout the entire story. I love how the writer entwined the richness of the historical time and events into her writing. The characters were totally believable and I felt attached to each one of them. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a little romance, mystery, history and a great storyline. Rhonda has once again proven herself as an excellent writer. Jane Still author Mothers Daze and Crazy Daze of Motherhood.

Clarissa and Paw are in for a long run!

I am totally in love with Clarissa and Paw, right from the first book. So when Sandra contacted me for review of the 2nd book, I was over joyed. And the book lived up to the expectations absolutely.

Clarissa is a young detective and Paw is her St. Bernard who is amazingly intelligent. Last book was about Blue Dolphins. This time they are on a break to a friend's Aunt's place but the Aunt has vanished without any trace. It is yet another opportunity for the girl and the dog to show how brilliant they are and they do not lose the opportunity to help their friend.

Amazing story, amazing friendship, amazing Clarissa and amazing Paw, right from the start to the end. It is a really short read but it is so interesting and exiting from the first page to the last. Clarissa and Paw are truly up for a long run. 5 stars without even a 2nd thought

Prometheus is sly this time

Halfway into this story I finally started thinking I knew which character was Prometheus. Daco, an accomplished thriller author, knows how to drop clues that keep readers aware but never too certain.

The ending is the most spectacular so far of the stories I've read in the Alvarium experiment. It's also the most clear-cut science fiction vs fantasy or alternative history (I'm partial to Sci-Fi). I rarely read thrillers, so I was surprised to like this one so much. Without the Prometheus angle (and that ending!), this might have been just another thriller to me. A well written, though, with a strong, savvy, gun-toting heroine.

I'm curious now about this Dr. Benjamin Jones. If he's in Daco's other novels, I might buy one just to meet him.

In all, this is a first-rate addition to the Alvarium Experiment.

Jordan Jakes takes on another human form

At the end of the Middle Palaeolithic era 40 millennia ago, a superior civilization planted a probe "to observe and report the progress of the human species," through a 2001: Space Odyssey-like monolith. Thing is, that probe--The Prometheus--assumes a human-like form that regenerates and adapts, the ultimate chameleon. Is it the CIA Director, or trash collector--or the person writing this review?

Prometheus in Greek means `forethought' and is the wisest of the Greek mythology Titans. That name also appears as the subtitle of Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus. Frankenstein's monster was regenerated from various body parts. Daco's Prometheus morphs using human DNA solely to transmit data. "The probe keeps watch. And sometimes it acts."

In The Pisces Affair, protagonist Jordan Jakes takes on another human form, "playing sex-kitten in the style of Angelina Jolie," but not by choice. Jakes would rather "be in Army fatigues crawling around a desert, or dodging bullets through the streets of Tehran." But she's needed to mingle with politicians and Dubai royalty, and protect Secretary of State Mallory Hamilton.

Predictably, things don't go as planned, and Jakes--posing as floozy Jewel Johnson--believes she's been drugged. She hears a single-note symphony and recalls significant events from her childhood. What's the significance of these flashbacks?

There's a mélange of characters that seem to be from a newscast in 2014, when this thrilling tale was written. Pro-Russian Ukrainian separatists figure prominently. Each of the dignitaries attending the posh party in Dubai seem intent on Jakes/Jewel drinking or eating something--against her better judgment.

"A shot rang out, and people screamed and dove for cover." Who bit the bullet? Was it Jakes? And why hasn't The Prometheus made its presence known?

Daco's debut, The Libra Affair, introduced The Prometheus Saga and gun-totin', kickass heroine Jordan Jakes. The Pisces Affair (The Prometheus Saga) is a finalist for Florida Writers Association's Royal Palm Literary Award. The winner of that prestigious award will be announced at the Orlando FWA conference in October 2015, which Daco will attend.

The Blacklist Splashed w/ SciFi - Smart Exciting Read

This was a cool story. I'm a big fan of The Blacklist and this story reminded me of an episode from that hit show. I liked the juxtaposition of a formal fancy party where everything is calm and proper on the outside but meanwhile the characters know there's a planned assassination they must stop. It was fun to see the characters keep a cool outward demeanor while struggling with intense thoughts and emotions on the inside. I could feel the tension. It was awesome.

When things finally do happen it is fast and the action is quick. All of the sudden the scene is intense and guns are drawn all around. I was really surprised to see what happened.

This is a story written as part of a saga of other short stories where an alien presence interacts with the human condition over a time period that spans from the dawn of man to the present. This story is closer to the present time than other stories I've read and it came off as slick and modern. It's been fun to read these stories from different authors but still see the same being, The Prometheus as a character in all of them. It took me until about three quarters of the way through this story to realize who The Prometheus was and then it all made sense and I could recall little hints earlier in the story that pointed to this truth. It was pulled off well.

If you're in for a smart exciting read that splashes a bit of science fiction onto a Blacklist kind of story then you're in for a treat with The Pisces Affair. I had a lot of fun reading it. You will too.

About the Author
Dr. Francis Bandettini: For psychiatry thriller, a psychiatrist author is a must. Dr. Bandettini is a private practice psychiatrist and co-author of American Jackal. He graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in molecular biology. He earned his medical degree at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Bandettini completed his psychiatry residency at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, where he subsequently joined the faculty as an assistant clinical professor of psychiatry. He is a retired Captain from the United States Army and South Dakota National Guard. He lives with his wife in the greater Sioux Falls area. What is unique about Dr. Bandettini? Just about everything. On most days, Dr. Bandettini rides his bicycle to work--even in the harsh South Dakota winters with his titanium-studded tires. He believes, according to recent research and his own experience, a day without biking is a day without peak enjoyment and functioning in his work. He has therefore a complete shower and kitchen in his office. He usually bikes home late at night with his wife--if his "darn paperwork is done." His wife, Naomi, accompanies him only "if more than 20 degrees F/-7 degrees C. " So she says! He usually writes from his home or office in the mornings, and collaborates with his co-author at various times in early morning and late night. He loves seeing patients and always tries to practice what he preaches in the most eclectic way--because each of us are so different! Matt Nilsen: After working in hospitals and clinics for more than a decade, Matt was ready to couple his creativity with stories from his healthcare career. From the world of emergency rooms, orthopedic clinics, private medical practices, dialysis units, administrative suites, hospital pharmacies, intensive care units, and psychiatry floors, Matt Nilsen has witnessed thousands of patients and their challenges. He's had his fair of surgeries and spent a few dozen days as a patient in the hospital himself. He lives in Salt Lake City with his wife and four kids, but spends ample time in South Dakota. He completed an undergraduate degree in marketing at the University of Utah, and earned a Master of Health Administration degree from the Medical College of Virginia. His former employers include the Barnabas Healthcare System, Intermountain Healthcare, and the 3M Corporation.

Game changer!

With it's wide variety of characters, genre, and emotion it makes for literally a heart pounding roller coaster ride that I hoped would never end. Unfortunately the book has to end somewhere; I'm really excited for more about Stoker. So many profound messages still have me thinking. Please make a second!

This book will have you saying Mitch Rapp is a wimp compared to Troy Stoker!!!

I was fortunate enough to get a early copy of this book from a friend of the author and i couldn't put it down even if I tried. This story will keep you interested from the first page to the last. Even when it's slow you just know it's building up to something amazing. These two authors will have saying who's Vince Flynn by the time you finish it. I can't wait for the next Troy Stoker novel to come out!!!

WOW: A real page turner

WOW!!!

I started reading this and stayed up all night. Aside from having an interesting cover, the content is also engaging. Don't want to give too much away but basically Troy Stoker is a psychiatrist who ends up in a conflict with the governor-elects wife who is facing conflicts of her own including a politician who wants to keep her silent - at any cost.

The characters are well developed and the plot moves swiftly.

This is a real page turner. I highly recommend it and at this price it is a steal!!!!!

~~Corruption and Greed Equals a Captivating Read~~

This is one intense and captivating read from the first to the last page. It is filled with intrigue plus has the corruption that the cocaine industry has created interwoven into this spell binding novel. Gage Hartline is employed working for a retired CEO of a credit card company. This is a most lucrative position with ample time off. Gage decides to visit his mentor, COL Hunter (now retired) in Fayetteville. Gage wants to run a new employment job by him. And, as expected, the COL doesn't like the portion about 'killing for hire', if necessary. Gage decides to accept the new challenge but something doesn't click about his employer, Falco. What is that old saying about 'trusting your gut'? Off to Lima he goes and he becomes gainfully employed by Alfa Seguridad led by Sonny Calabrese. All of these employees were elite soldiers prior to going to Lima, Peru, to work for Sonny.

This is one roller coaster ride - from the US to Lima and back again - some of the characters create mayhem and havoc; others are trying to take over the cocaine business and some just outright want to kill and kill some more. There is a scene in a garage in SC that I will not forget soon. And, I nearly forgot the dual scene at La Merced.! My word, that is incredible, too. The monetary value of the cocaine when broken down by kilo is mind boggling. When one discovers the people responsible for transporting the coke and the manner in which it is done, one will be completely flabbergasted!

All in all, a well written novel with twists and turns along many of the paths. The characters have a depth to them that is not normally found in a book. Their backgrounds enhance the characters so the reader is able to gain more perspective into their lives than normal. Plot is well conceived, excellent mix of characters and the ending is both surprising and justified.

Soldier of Misfortune is Driskell's Coming of Age

To say that Gage Hartline is drawn to dangerous situations is a bit like saying Bill Clinton enjoys the company of women or Kim Kardashian doesn't mind a little publicity. Like a moth drawn to a flame, Gage simply can't help himself!

When Gage is offered the chance to go undercover in Peru to find out why ex-soldiers working for narco-baron Sonny Calabrese keep turning up dead, his most revered and trusted mentor pleads with him to turn and run the other way. Even Gage knows it is a suicide mission. But Gage Hartline is like a great thoroughbred race horse born to run - he can't change who he is even if it ultimately costs him his life.

One of the best things about Driskell's evolution as a writer is his blossoming ability to seamlessly create breathtaking and harrowing plots while gradually revealing Hartline's admirable yet flawed character. With every book I learn more about what drives this heroic and sometimes tragic man. At first glance, it is tempting to see him as an unrepentant adrenaline addicted mercenary. But he is far more than that. He is, first and foremost, a protector who is guided by a deeply ingrained sense of personal justice that overrides any and all allegiances and relationships. Gage sees this as an almost noble calling and will not allow anything or anyone to interfere with what he believes to be his duty.

The conflicts this creates and his struggles to reconcile duty with the normal personal desires of love, friendship, home, etc... are fascinating to watch evolve.

Soldier of Misfortune allows us to see Gage's continuing evolution as a hero and as a man. It also allows us to see Driskell continue to evolve as a tremendously skilled author. Driskell gets better with each novel and I believe Soldier of Misfortune marks his coming of age as a master of the thriller genre.

Another great covert ops book.

This was #3 in the Gage Hartline series. I had read books 1 and 2, and reviewed both. Like those prior to this book, "...Misfortune" well satisfied my love for covert ops. I like the intrigue laid out by the antagonists, in this case, an American expatriate operating a drug stealing operation against the Peruvian drug cartels. Hartline is sent to Peru to take out the head antagonist. Gage, the head protagonist of the story, equally set his own course of planning in order to carry out his mission. The intrigue by both Gage and the principal antagonist is what brings the story line to a compelling conclusion.
I don't re-tell story lines in my reviews, but suffice it to say, this covert ops book kept me "hooked" from page one to page last. The plot was well developed. The characters were also well developed. The story flowed continually without any "dead" spots. The book had great thread, by which I mean if/when I put it down and later came back to it, I did not have to re read pages to remember where I had left off. That's a good mark for story line delivery and reader memory.
For anyone interested in reading about the drug cartels and how they carry out their mission, and the covert ops employed to thwart that mission, this is an extremely interesting and enjoyable read.
Apart from this series, I have read other books by Chuck Driskell and enjoyed them as much...but those were reviews from another perspective.
I highly recommend this book and believe any one reading it will agree it was time well spent.

La serie de Martin Beck, que Wahloo con escribió ...

La serie de Martin Beck, que Wahloo con escribió con Maj Sjöwall, es una de mis favoritas. Asesinato en la planta 31, escrita en solitario, es muy interesante. Publicada en 1966, es increíble lo mucho que la sociedad futurista que retrata se parece a la nuestra. Incluso habla de cadenas de cafeterías y de la televisión basura que ahora nos parecen ta normales. Lo único que no vio venir fue la obsolescencia del papel y las máquinas de escribir. A pesar de todo, el resto parece profético. Entretenido y espeluznante.

Un verdadero detective en una sociedad escalofriante

Primera vez que leo una novela del detective Jensen y reconozco en el personaje a un verdadero detective, metódico, racional, y esquemático con respecto al cumplimiento de las leyes y de las normas. Por otra parte, carente de humor. Desenvolviéndose en una sociedad "perfecta" en la que hay consenso y paz social, a costa de falta de libertad de pensamiento y de expresión entre otros males. Me gustó mucho la novela, la trama, la redacción, sobre todo los diálogos. Muy recomendable.
