You and your friends visit an old theater on the seedy side of town. You pay for a double feature and take your seats. The lights go down and your palms get sweaty.

Abigail's parents are hoping the experience will straighten their daughter out, but the nuns at St. Apollonia have something else in mind. They're about to introduce Abigail to the obscure saint they've come to worship in a ceremony neither of her parents would approve of.

You get up to use the bathroom and get some more popcorn, then barely make it back in time when the second feature begins ...

An NYU anthropology professor has just received troubling footage from a colleague on an unsanctioned assignment in South America. Doctor Ridgeway's crew has been murdered by a local tribe and his whereabouts are unknown. With the help of a wealthy student's father, professor Buchanan travels to the southernmost city of Ushuaia to search for his long time friend as well as the legendary Guaranez tribe. But there's a catch: said student's father works for the Museum of Natural History and has hired a team of mercenaries to bring members of the tribe back to Manhattan...

You and your friends have barely kept your theater snacks down. Possessed nuns. Third World Cannibals. Religious cults. Machete and chainsaw-wielding mayhem. All just the initial offerings of The Atrocity Vendor ...

This book is such an entertaining read. I couldn't put it down. Definitely has a great sense of humor about it and the action is pretty much non stop.

The first story is about a hyper-religious family admitting their "troubled" daughter into the most jacked up Catholic school program ever. You will definitely look at nuns differently after reading this story. Things eventually descend into gory madness but it also made me think a little about the things people can get away with in be name of religion.

The second story is about a small tribe of cannibals that are let loose in the streets of New York City. How did they get there? How did they get loose? That's the fun part. This story eventually descends into gory madness as well.

I enjoyed both stories immensely and plan to read more Nick Cato in the future. This is also definitely another winner for Grindhouse Press!

Get Your Popcorn Ready
By Vincenzo Bilof
I was lucky enough to have read The Blasphemous Sisters of St. Apollonia when it debuted as a limited release; it was published with a stack of other nunsploitation books, but Cato’s book was easily my favorite. I’ve read a couple of his books now, and Cato’s love for the grindhouse scene and old-school, cheap horror is accompanied by smooth writing that fits the type of narrative you’re looking for when you buy his work. In my opinion, there isn’t enough fiction like this out there; Cato stays true to the nunspolitation formula. It’s gratuitous, violent, and fun. A lot of people like to compliment a book by saying, “It’s just like a movie!” Well, why not just watch a movie? Not every movie is going to deliver on the promise that Cato makes when he writes this style of fiction. I want what I pay for, and when I get it—and I am entertained, then the book doesn’t have to be compared to Mark Twain literature.
So I should mention the second story in this book. When I heard Cato had written a cannibal book, I begged the publisher to release it as an unlimited release, but it didn’t happen, and I missed out. Now, here it is. The cannibal book is a little slower-paced. It takes a little while to get moving, but then I thought about it: your typical cannibalsploitation films follow the same exact model.
You can easily read both of these stories quickly, and you would get more value out of your dollar than buying a hard-to-find DVD that’s expensive and has a terrible digital transfer (although that’s sometimes part of the charm). If you want grindhouse-style horror, Cato is one of the best. He knows the genre, and knows how to write.

Don't Read This Before Bed
By Hillary M. Tietsworth
This book was impossible to put down. I'd just finished reading another book last night and thought I could read a few pages of this book before bed. Instead, I stayed up and read half of it before I passed out, and when I woke up, I picked it right back up and finished it before I even got ready for the day. It's very fast-paced (in some cases maybe too much, leading to leaps in the story that make it feel like you maybe missed something) but very captivating, and sometimes in horrible ways.

Now this book isn't for everyone. Simply put, it really isn't, because it's full to the brim with gory, horrible situations through the two stories. But if you like things like American Horror Story, or The Following, you'll probably find this pretty great, because it's the same level of sociopathic madness that drives these two short stories in The Atrocity Vendor.

That being the case, the stories were well written. They did give off an intense vibe of misogyny, and still do, but at the same time, the women are powerful in these stories, scary powerful. It's a rough mix for me, because they're treated like animals, but also end up being the badasses of the stories.

Still, definitely worth a read, and I've always enjoyed more gory storytelling. This was a ride worth taking... if you're not too scared to jump on.
