A wealthy alumnus of Barrett, a prestigious New England college, has challenged graduates to locate the statue of a beautiful woman, Sirena, that’s been missing from the campus for 35 years before Barrett’s upcoming 150th anniversary ceremonies. If the statue is returned, $23 million goes to the college and $2 million goes to its rescuers. St. Louis lawyer and widower Lou Solomon, as his 20th class reunion looms, agrees to join the quest—and begins a haphazard and, at times illegal, cross-country mission with his three former roomies that is both deeply nostalgic and profoundly transformative. This heartwarming misadventure isn’t so much about four middle-aged men finding a statue as about finding themselves. (Publishers Weekly)
About the Author
Michael A. Kahn is the award-winning author of several novels, praised by Publishers Weekly for their “intelligent, breezy dialogue and clever plotting.” A graduate of Amherst College and Harvard Law School, Mr. Kahn began his literary career writing free-lance feature articles for Chicago Magazine while teaching fifth grade in the Chicago public schools. Now a trial attorney in St. Louis, he wrote his first novel on a dare from his wife, who got sick of hearing him announce, each time he finished a paperback thriller that he’d purchased at an airport newsstand, “I could write a better book than this.” “Then write one,” she finally said, “or please shut up.”

fun, and poignant detour from the awesome Rachel Gold ...

A frolicking, fun, and poignant detour from the awesome Rachel Gold series by this author. But it has his characteristic turn of phrase, and mix of adventure, suspense, and deeper thoughts. Also, it keeps you engaged from chapter to chapter so it's hard to put down. Ready for a new Rachel Gold story.

Generally preposterous but fairly action packed

As if very often the case, I received this unit free in exchange for a review. Also as usual I give my candid opinions about it below.
The nutshell view on this book is fairly straightforward. The cover seems to want us to believe that it's a mystery but there's not really much of a mystery to it. Instead it's a middle-aged men's adventure novel centering on a group of forty-somethings who go on a grand adventure looking for a long-last statue. Their travels take them to a few Midwestern locales before the whole thing wraps up back at their college.
To the positive, this is a rare example of men's literature that isn't all about shooting and crashing things. It's primary themes center on personal development and less than would normally be expected on "getting the baddies." The story does proceed as a crisp pace and doesn't give you time to get bored but doesn't blow your head off with action.
To the negative, while the story proceeded it felt rather flimsy and almost comic at times. The situations our adventurers end up in are generally preposterous and they somehow escape any negative consequences for anything they do except in one very specific case. It seems to be an odd cross between the Maltese Falcon and Revenge of the Nerds except the Nerds are now all grown men traipsing about.
In summary, I didn't hurl this book across the room in annoyance but when I got to the end I found that I'd rather wished that I had done so much earlier and moved on to something more plausible and rewarding.

Chasing a woman was never so engrosing

Four former college room mates 20 years have passed and now they are on the quest of a life time. Old wounds will be healed new ones will be inflicted but always the quest for Sirena holds them.
It has been 20 years since Lou, Ray,Gordie and Billy have seen each other much less spent more than a few moments catching up. Lou has lost his wife and is raiding his 2 kids alone, Billy is teaching Spanish, Gordie has allowed his screen writing dreams to die as he writes copy at a Chicago Advertising Company and Ray is the mini mall king. But all of them still want to find Sirena. Sirena brings them together when life has drug them apart. and the quest for Sirena will change how each of them sees himself and the group.
I loved this book. The characters are flawed and wonderfully draw. Drawing the reader in immediately. I wanted these guys to find he. I wanted these guys to overcome their midlife crisis. You will have to read the book to find out if they were able to do that.
