Aother great detective story

The second of three downloaded books from this outstanding new author. I won't spoil the story, but it's just as good as, if not a little better than 'As the crow flies' (free on kindle and an absolute STEAL at $0!!!!!). These thrillers are relatively short but very well written and DO NOT stand still, even for a second. Fast paced, not a heck of a lot of character development, but keeps the pace up all the way through. Great dialogue between the characters. Damien is an author to watch!!!

Good Old-Fashioned Police Work

Nick Dixon is a diabetic Somerset detective, romantically involved with his police partner, Jane Winter. In his second outing here, he investigates a curious murder. An elderly woman’s head has been found in a sand trap at a local golf course. Upon further investigation the rest of the woman’s body is found in a burned-out car, parked at the seashore. This is curious enough, but Nick soon discovers that a precisely parallel case occurred, some thirty years earlier, in Norfolk.
From that point on, as Dixon says, it’s all ‘old-fashioned police work’: find the commonalities between the two murders, discover the individuals with whom the victims might have come in contact and deduce the motive for killing them, in that fashion.
Head in the Sand has a satisfying but conventional, linear plot. There are no high-tech forensics, no car chases and no shoot-outs, but rather the sifting of evidence, the searching of files, the checking of archives, the elimination of suspects, the identification of perp(s). The story moves briskly; the characters are interesting and attractive; the plot is imaginative but plausible.
This was my first Damien Boyd novel, a gift from friends who live in the location of the Somerset murder. Boyd is a solid, skilled writer. I look forward to reading more of his work.

The characters seem like real people

I read his first book yesterday, and then immediately bought this one and started reading. The plots are perfect--the murderer isn't obvious, but yet makes sense when you get to it--just the right amount of red herrings and twists without being ridiculous. The characters seem like real people, not caricatures or stereotypes. I'm off to read more of his books!
