Procedural Interrupted

Not just space but time separates this book from early 'Disappeared' books. First, a dreadful crime scene awaits a team of human investigators operating at invitation of an Emir on a 'frontier' planet. That is, a distant limit of human settlement- the aliens sharing the planet might not see it that way. Regardless, some sinister characters live on such places- and occasionally, die. That WAS the scene the team found one day, years ago.
Another part of the book concerns Judita Gomez, now older, finding clues that suspects from the crime have resurfaced on the moon, and she wants to find out why. It becomes central to the Anniversary Day Saga.
As in other volumes, there are visuals of humans indicted for violating alien laws; facing penalties and considering running away if possible.
The preface is a fascinating insight to the working of a novelist's mind. She not only explains the purpose of Judita, but what other authors she admires and hints of where future stories will go. Not to worry- Miles Flint will reappear in future books.

Ready for the next in this series

I just finished reading "A Murder of Clones." I'm glad I knew before I started it, that this story is not intended to stand alone. In fact, it would be a good idea to read the first two books in the Anniversary Day arc before you read this book. From what I understand, there are two more books (the final two) being released soon.
This book does not even mention Miles Flint. It begins 15 years before the Anniversary Day Moon bombing. An Alliance marshal, Judita Gomez, has been called in to help an alien race deal with some humans who have an enclave on their planet. I don't want to spoil the story with too much detail. But there are murderous clones to be investigated. And long-term consequences to the situation.
I liked the book for what it is. A necessary part of a much larger picture. There is a lot of detail that seems cumbersome. I suspect that it will turn out to be important. I really am wondering what that Peyti was up to...

I love the Retrieval Artist series

I love the Retrieval Artist series, and they just keep getting better! Science Fiction at its absolute best! I couldn't put the book down until I finished. I love the suspense and I have always liked how Kris brings out the complexities of inter-species (and interracial, for that matter) communications, and accommodations needed for multiple species to co-exist. I highly recommend trying this book, or the very first book in the series. Readers of Kris's other books won't be disappointed (except that the next book isn't available yet - but don't be too disappointed - the next one is coming out next month)!
