From Publishers Weekly
In Cavender's delightful sixth Pizza Lovers mystery (after 2012's Killer Crust), the residents of Timber Ridge, N.C., including Eleanor Swift, owner of A Slice of Delight, the local pizzeria, and her sister, Maddy Spencer, have spent weeks preparing for Timber Ridge's largest annual celebration, the Founders Day Festival. On the day of the fair, Maddy's ex-husband, Grant Whitmore, shows up and picks a fight with Maddy's fiancé, Bob Lemon. That evening, someone stabs Grant in the heart with a barbecue skewer, as Eleanor and Maddy later learn from police chief Kevin Hurley, who fingers Bob as the most likely murder suspect. When the sisters set out to clear Bob's name, they discover that plenty of others had motives for the crime. Each suspect is a distinctive character, and, as usual, Cavender does a fine job capturing the feel of a small North Carolina town and its people. Agent: John Talbot, Talbot Fortune Agency. (Dec.)
From Booklist
In the latest in Cavender’s Pizza Lovers series, Maddy, co-owner with her sister, Eleanor, of the Slice of Delight pizza shop, is concerned when her ex-husband, Grant, returns to Timber Ridge determined to get together with her. When Grant’s body is later discovered, the police suspect Bob, Maddy’s fiancé. The sisters begin by asking questions of an attractive singer in a band who seemed to be friendly with Grant. The police also want to know why Grant’s mother left Maddy something in her will, a bequest that was news to Maddy. In between running the pizza shop, Maddy digs deeper into Grant’s life and business associates, prompting a hostile reaction from Grant’s sister. This series remains delicious fun, with a well-developed cast and enough red herrings and possible motives strewn about to puzzle readers focused on whodunit. The pseudonymous Cavender, who writes the Donut Mystery series as Jessica Beck, will continue to draw food mystery fans with her appealing blend of crime, recipes, and, of course, pizza. --Amy Alessio

Good plane read
By Leslie N. Patino
Sisters Eleanor and Maddy return for another Pizza Lovers Mystery, this time trying to find the murderer of Maddy’s troublesome and troubled ex-husband. There’s no shortage of suspects, including Maddy’s current fiancé and even the sisters themselves. Between running their pizzeria and their marginally legal investigation, these good-hearted women stay very busy over the several days during which the story takes place.
The pace of this action-driven whodunit clips along nicely, due in part to the extensive use of dialogue and a nicely developed plot. Author Chris Cavender does a good job of providing quick doses of necessary backstory from previous books for first-time readers. It’s an easy and entertaining read—ideal for a long plane ride or a cold winter day inside.

The Missing Dough Will Thrill Your Taste Buds

The Missing Dough

Maddy’s ex-husband, Grant Whitmore, has come back to Timber Ridge, North Carolina claiming he wants to patch things up. It’s soon evident that he has another motive altogether—Grant’s late mother left Maddy something in her will. Maddy refuses to sign the quitclaim that Grant brought with him, despite his threats. But Grant won’t be threatening anyone much longer, for later that night, his body is discovered near the Founder’s Day festival.
Matters are complicated even further when Grant’s sister shows up, accusing Maddy and her fiancé of having a part in the murder. As Eleanor and Maddy investigate, they find a great many people who might want to see Grant dead. But can they unearth the culprit before false accusations burn their reputations to a crisp?
My review:
Just when you think you can enjoy a quiet evening out with your sister and the guys the fly in the ointment appears. Maddy’s ex shows up to cause trouble. Supposedly he claims he wants her back, but she puts an end to that quickly. Grant then informs her that his mother had died and that Maddy was named in the will. He tries to get her to sign a quitclaim and she again tells him to take a hike. But that’s not the end of the trouble when he shows up dead and Eleanor and Maddy have to find the real killer to keep their boyfriends out of jail.
Next layer of aggravation for the girls is the appearance of Maddy’s ex sister in law who accuses Maddy and her fiancé of her brother’s murder. Mix in another layer which includes gangsters and threats and you have the most outrageous and interesting story yet in the Pizza Lovers Mystery series.
I highly recommend this book and all the previous ones as a great series to follow and own.

The Missing Dough
By Gram Tess
Chris writes many books under a couple of different names, and I have always enjoyed his work, be it series' about soap making, candle making, light houses or pizza parlors.
This one is about Eleanor, who owns the pizza parlor and Maddy, # 1 assistant, side-kick detective, and most importantly sister. When Maddy's obnoxious ex-husband, Grant turns up dead, the sisters and their boy friends end up being the main suspects. The girls and their guys go to a festival in their town of Timber Ridge, NC and run into Grant, who is not only obnoxious, now he is drunk and belligerent. Eleanor and Maddy, as usual, promise David and Bob that they will stay out of Grant's death, but that lasts about a nano-second. At times it seems as if the girls have more sources than the police do. Top cop Kevin Hurley, Eleanor's high school sweetheart, knows it is almost impossible for Eleanor and Maddy to sit back and leave the case to the police. Coming face to face with other suspects, lead the sisters on another of their dangerous, but fun filled investigations. This is a quick read and I look forward to the next book, whatever it may be by Chris.
