In this third book of the Joanna Hayworth Vintage Clothing mystery series, Joanna lands the dream assignment of dressing a bride for her celebrity wedding at a remote mountain lodge. The bridal gown is the rare and disturbing Tears dress from Schiaparelli’s 1938 circus collection. Add one monstrous snowstorm, a mother who can’t stop reliving her Studio 54 days, a New Age minister with a mysterious past, a temperamental young chef—and a growing number of corpses—and Joanna’s dream soon becomes a nightmare. Slain in Schiaparelli adds a witty, contemporary twist to the classic country manor mystery.

Modern Manor House Mystery
By Cozy Cottage
This is the third offering in a wonderful series about Joanna, the owner of a vintage clothing store who gets caught up in mysteries.
At this time, Joanna is living with her beau in her house. I'm delighted to learn this because she's been rather tentative about romance and as a heroine, a bit of a hard to get to know enigma. I mention this because I noted in a previous review that I hope readers would be able to get to know Joanna better. Maybe the author actually took note of this??? One can hope! Also, this character growth is a good sign that the author knows how to build a satisfying series. However, I digress because there's no focus on their home life, nor should there be in this story. This is a funky, modern take on a manor mystery.
Joanna is at a celebrity/rock star wedding, as she's in charge of a vintage Schiaparelli dress known as the Tears gown, which really exists - and is to be worn by the young bride as a wedding dress. The manor house is a character itself - a Dali house filled with all sorts of strange and bizarrely beautiful pieces of furniture and art by Dali. Having been around many famous and even infamous people who always want to indulge themselves in what is rare and headline-grabbing, I found the choice of dress and wedding location for a rock star completely believable. Throw in the New Age "minister", the petulant, drunken mother of the bride and the roster of other characters, and I felt like I was at a Mondo 2000 party circa 1991!
My emotions were carried along with Joanna's, from the very beginning, when she's subjected to various types of treatment by the cast of characters. Their behavior toward her ranges from respectful to dismissive and outright rude, depending on their level of sobriety and dysfunction. Joanna and I by turn feel bad for and then was revolted by some of these characters, especially when there's no real escape from them. It took me awhile to adjust to this, but it really made the bizarre situation more real - oppressive, fascinating, frightening and somewhat smothering, too.
The only character I liked immediately was the very talented young French chef. I found the other characters to be believable in that exaggerated Poirot/Marple style, which suits this blizzard-and-murder setting perfectly. The first murder bummed me out, as it was a character I'd hoped would be around. It expertly set the scene for the rest of the story, as the cascade of reactions from the other characters set the rest of the book in motion.
Joanna shows a truly intrepid side which is rather hidden behind her feminine, vintage-living focus. But readers are reminded that her background is in law, and her analytical mind clicks away like a young Marple on the hunt. Her determination turns to terror when someone fills her bed with a nest of black widow spiders. Between the first murder and this horrific experience are numerous encounters, discoveries and theories while their food supply is growing smaller and their suspicion of each other grows larger.
As the story moves toward conclusion, Joanna has to take some real risks to ensure surviving and nailing the murderer. She finds unexpected help, which I thought was a fun plot twist. I was hugely relieved at the end, and somewhat surprised by whodunit and why.
This was a well-crafted story. It doesn't have the expert rendering of a Christie, but the author's ambitious efforts were well-done. I found myself a bit stressed, frazzled and scared, just like Joanna was. I admire Sanders for taking the risk of a manor house mystery in her third novel. I'm an enthusiastic, loyal reader and look forward to more of Joanna's mysteries.

Another Enjoyable Book in the Vintage Clothing Mystery Series!
By Chloegirl
Love this series! Each book gets better & better. This time Joanna, owner of a vintage clothes store is transporting a vintage Schiaparelli dress for a bride who is marrying a rock star at a secluded ski resort. What occurs are murder, deceit, hidden secrets, & a blizzard that strands all. Almost reminds me of Christie's And Then There Were None! Great characters, great plot, great story. I couldn't put it down! It was a great book to read while the wind was blowing here with snow coming down! Luckily I have heat & electricity! Can't wait for book #4.

A Fun Read!
By Dian
I've read all the books in this series, and enjoyed them all. Angela's characters are real and believable. In this particular story, her emphasis was not as much on vintage clothing as in previous books, but interestingly enough the location becomes a dominating character. It had all the mystery and intrigue of a good who done it ! I think anyone who enjoys the twists, surprises, and intricate webs of mysteries will love this.
