They set out for Aspen in 1985. A one year post-graduation detour to play in the Rockies prior to entering the “real world.” That was the plan. They wouldn’t need much. Just ordinary jobs with a ski pass attached, a one-bedroom apartment, and each other. But tempted by the decadent side of this iconic resort town, Alex Cavanaugh enters into an illicit agreement with a new acquaintance and finds himself on a remote forest trail, where the crime he is committing pales in comparison to the one his path will cross, leading him further into the darkness of the mountains, and the human soul.

Great suspense
By Robin Landry
I've read more than my share of first novels, and Roaring Forks is certainly a cut above. There was some choppy writing that could have been scaled back, but it was effective in places. The change of point of view near the end was a bit jaunting, but it did flow with the story, so I didn't have a problem with it. The writing itself was very suspenseful. I found myself racing to the finish line which is what I love in a suspense novel. Jeff Howe has talent to spare, so I'll be looking forward to his next novel.

The story was of a young man, Alex, who was typical enough to relate to. Alex moves to Aspen to bum around the mountain for a year to decompress after getting his college degree. He persuades his artist girlfriend to come with him, promising her it's only for a year. They both get jobs, and meet new friends, unfortunately Alex's new friend asks him to move some coke for him. Alex agrees since it's easy money and he enjoys hiking through the mountains. What can go wrong? Plenty if you're the star of a suspense novel.

Alex runs into a kidnapped girl who's being held by some really bad people and that's when the suspense whips into high gear. Alex must use all of his resources to escape with his life as he runs through the wilds of the Colorado mountains. Once the book hit this mark, I couldn't put it down until I'd finished. The bad guys were well-developed which I really enjoy. I like to know how they got that way, and Howe gives us a good story. Alex was a complex protagonist who wouldn't be in the predicament he found himself in, if he didn't have a bit of a dark side, though I did sympathize with him the whole way through the book. Erin, the girlfriend, played a small part, she was mostly there to give Alex a reason to be a good guy.

Very good book, and outstanding for a first attempt at writing.

Love, drugs and intrigue in the High Country of Colorado
By Cheryl Stout
It is 1985 and Alex and Erin are in love. They just graduated from college and decide to live in Aspen, Colorado for a year (not Erin's first choice but she's willing to go so Alex can live his dream).

Alex ends up not being totally honest with Erin and the troubles snowball downhill from there.

I love the Aspen/Carbondale/Crested Butte area and enjoyed reading this tale set in that area. I could tell the author has actually been to that part of our beautiful country and was writing from what he knows.

The time period, even though 30 years in the past, was spot on. The book triggered memories for me from that same time period.

Bad guys, really bad guys, good guys being bad, murder, mayhem and drugs are all mixed together in this first offering from author Howe.

Alex, the protagonist, was fairly well developed in the story. A little deeper look at some of the auxiliary characters would have been helpful.

It took a few chapters to get into the rhythm of the story as it alternated between characters. But, all in all, I thought the story was well done. And I even liked the ending though I usually like more of a sense of closure with the books I read. In this case, the ending was just right.

NOTE: I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

Great New Author.
By Susannah St Clair Foxy Loxy
I find it hard to believe that this is the author’s first novel. It is not only a great read but the fact that it moves on at a high rate of speed adds to the over all “great book” feeling. His characters are nicely fleshed out. Not a huge amount of depth but then this is not “War and Peace” it’s for good entertainment which it excels at. This is the first time that I kept looking over to the opposing page to “see” if anybody was in worse trouble yet. Some of the things that happened definitely caught me by surprise. Sarah for instance. That was an ouch and some of the things that happen are quite brutal but not dwelled on in excess ( which I have seen happen too often) but are things we (sadly) read about in the paper or are on the news all the time so they are quite believable.
There is a lot of well written back ground surrounding the characters as they move through the story. Sometimes an author can get way too over blown in describing scene’s and places. Not so here. This just flows perfectly. I also don’t think I saw any editing issues but I have to say that if there are any, I was to enthralled to notice and hot to get to the next page. Yes.. a page turner indeed. I definitely liked how the main characters finished out at the end. Realistic.
I received this book free for an honest and unbiased review. That said, I hear he is almost done with his second book. I will be getting it. Thanks for a “hot” book Jeff! I will tell my reading friends to get it.
