Arch Oboler (1907-1987) was a major figure in the Golden Age of Radio whose weekly horror show Lights Out terrified listeners in the 1930s and '40s. Dark and disturbing

If you don't know the name, Arch Oboler was the host of "Lights Out," a "Golden-Age of Radio" show which was hugely popular and somewhat notorious for its gruesome stories. This book was his late-in-life look at a world in which evil seemed to be triumphant, and God absent. One character sums up this bleak prospect saying roughly (I don't think this is a spoiler at all), Maybe God has gone blind from the smoke in His eyes, from the concentration camps and the atomic bombs, and He's gone off to the edge of Creation until they clear up and we've learned to stop doing that sort of thing.
As I say, this is dark, disturbing, and provocative as well. It isn't great literature, I don't think, but it is a very respectable offering from a very remarkable writer. Anyone who wonders about the classic paradox of why there should be evil in a world made by God can appreciate this.
