Tight story, great characters

With "Murder in Adland" Bruce Beckham has created a wonderful cast of characters.
Skelgill and Jones are dispatched to a hotel where an ad executive and CEO was found murdered in his bed. As popular as he was, Ivan, the murdered man, had nonetheless made some enemies, and some of them worked for him. Through an oversight it takes Skelgill and Jones a couple of days to realise they are on the wrong track, and they have to make up for lost time. Will they be in time to prevent another murder?
Apart from the whodunnnit part of the book, which was skillfully written, and allowed for no plot holes, the development of the characters was superb. There were times when the writing reminded me P.D. James, because the people came to life on the page for me. I enjoyed Skelgill's weaknesses - fishing and food and Jones makes a perfect sidekick for him.
It looks like Beckham has only written this one book so far. I really hope that he will be adding more to his collection soon.

Very British and quite good.

Excellent, literate writing carries the book. The plot is quite ordinary but it is not the main part. The budding relationship between Detectives Skelgill and Jones is the center of the story. You also get the facts of fishing, birding and cricket as the pair travels over the landscape interviewing suspects. This gets a little longer than necessary...some editing would have been welcome but the sly, dry British humor which is rampant throughout keeps the story going. The language is totally geared to Brits so it takes a little work to plow through for Americans but it is a very worthwhile read.

Loved the vernacular.

I enjoyed this book, partly because of the colloquial terminology, which I can understand might have irked some American readers. Good descriptive paragraphs. Particularly pleasing to me was the correct use of the word 'whence' without a preceding 'from'.
For me, the plot rather took a back seat, I enjoyed the writing so much.
Despite having no interest whatsoever in sport, I avidly read every word describing the cricket match, laughing out loud during the process.
I have now bought the second book of the series and look forward to enjoying it as much as the first one.
