"There is something about this particular book of the Cedar Bay Cozy Mystery series - of the four books I've read so far - that stands out to me. Is it because I also liked the beloved Buddhist Zen Master and wanted to know who was responsible for his murder? Is it because of the way the author handled the subject of Buddhism without preaching to her readers? Is it because the characters seemed to have been developed even more than in the initial books of the series? I'm not exactly sure what it is about this book that stands out to me but, in its entirety, I would have to classify this book as being one of the best I've read."

About the Author
Dianne Harman draws her stories and characters from a diverse business and personal background. She owned a national antique and art appraisal business for many years, left that industry, and opened two yoga centers where she taught yoga and certified yoga instructors. She's traveled extensively throughout the world and loves nothing more than cooking with her husband and playing with their boxer dog, Kelly.

Being a dog lover and having attended numerous cooking schools, she couldn't resist writing about food and dogs. She is the author of four cozy mystery series: Cedar Bay, Liz Lucas, High Desert, and her newest, Midwest Cozy Mystery Series. Each of these books contains recipes from her travels. I loved this book

I loved this book! This is the third book in an exciting mystery series. Includes recipes!! How nice is that? Author Dianne Harman weaves another amazing tale with very likable, well-written characters. The plot is another page turner. I am not one to give out spoilers, so just saying this book is not one to miss! I highly recommend this series for your library. You will not be disappointed!

I hope this is not a new trend...

OK--the book itself worth 2 stars, that is, the 70-some percent of its content. The rest of what I paid for--and, I now remember, same thing as in an earlier book by this author--is a few chapters of a con-artist treatise on money and success, supposedly, although it seems to have been written by someone on peyote or mushrooms or bath salts. OH, the book changed her life! Or so says Dianne Harman. Why is the publisher of this book allowing this?? Also, Amazon should be up front about what we are buying. I am annoyed that I also bought her next book in the series, having forgotten about this "surprise" feature. I was not looking for a sappy life coach, just a silly little cozy mystery to pass the time. I hate to think of anyone looking to seriously improve one's life would take the crazed notions of Vivek Rajan Vivek, the author of this path to riches and the good life, self-serving and amoral as it is. What is the ethical aspect of this; I hope it is not a trend. But then, it probably is, given the percentage of the advice given over to MONEY.

Truly Awful Writing

So poorly written. Unfortunately I bought this because it was rated well, then went back and bought the previous books to read first. I thought maybe the author would hit her stride, but no. This was so awful. The writing is terrible, the characters are cardboard, I just can't express in words how truly horrible the writing was - which seems to be a problem I share with this author. Plus, this book is MUCH shorter than it originally appears because the last third of the book isn't part of this book. Instead the last significant chunk of the text is a weirdo marketing/self-help infomercial. And it is the EXACT SAME ONE in ALL of the books in this series. I feel very strongly that Amazon should give me my money back - I thought I was buying a fun cozy mystery and instead I got a half-hearted mystery and an infomercial. I am sorry but the self-help portion is inexcusable. At the very least this is false advertising.

At this point, if Kory M Shrum writes something, I'm gonna read it!

Full Disclosure: I received an early copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

I don't even know how to start my review because a lot of what I want to talk about would spoil the book! Maybe I should just stick to the fact that DYING FOR A LIVING was a brilliant book and this is a fantastic follow up? :D

DYING BY THE HOUR picks up after the events in DYING FOR A LIVING. Jesse chose Lane for her relationship, causing Ally, her BFF and sometimes lover, to close out and back off. But Lane is harboring resentment because Jesse chose Ally in that basement. Sure, Lane has NRD now, but Jesse didn't know that at the time and it burns at him. So while she has to deal with nefarious plans from her father, a boss who is pretending to be dead, and the joys and woes of being a Replacement Agent, Jesse has lost her BFF and gained a BF who is prickly with hurt feelings.

The writing is just as good as the first book: it's well told, well built, and flows nicely. I normally don't like narratives that switch points of view because it can get confusing, but Kory M Shrum does it right and it flows naturally.

Shrum also knows how to make those characters believable. I was highly annoyed with Lane, wanting to punch him at one point, annoyed with Jesse, sympathizing with Ally, and wondering what the heck is all of this coming to. I think good writers are the ones that evoke emotion, even if it's simple loathing for a character and Kory Shrum is one of those writers. You end up caring for her characters and wondering what is going to happen to them around the corner.

If you loved DYING FOR A LIVING, this follow up comes out September 2nd. Not too much longer!

Jesse Sullivan is back in 'Dying by the Hour' and that's a very good thing

Jesse Sullivan gets paid to die.
So far, she's done that more than 80 times.
But there are people out in the world who would like to make her next death permanent.
In "Dying for a Living" author Kory Shrum introduced us to Jesse who, because of a quirk in her genetic makeup, can - literally - come back from the dead. She's one of a handful of people - roughly 2 percent of the population - that can do this and for several years she was a federal death replacement agent. In effect, she got paid to die so that others might live.
Then something went wrong. Around the country other men and women like her were being murdered in such a way that they were not able to return to the living.
Thousands of them, in fact.
And Jesse, trapped by religious fanatics and a high-class escort whose daughter had been kidnapped, was next on the list.
She escaped but she knows that she is not safe.
Might never be safe, in fact, unless the killers are caught.
In "Dying by the Hour" Shrum continues Jesse's story and it is every bit as good as the first installment in the diminutive heroine's saga.
In fact, it may even be better.
In "Dying for a Living" Jesse is in love with two people: Lane, a hunky guy with a streak of bad boy in him, and Ally, her childhood girlfriend who now works as her assistant. She's going to have to choose one over the other at some point and in "Dying by the Hour" she has made that choice. This gives Shrum an opportunity to delve deeply into the emotional lives of both Jesse and Ally and she does it with a deft touch. What could have been a sappy romance is, in Shrum's hands, a story of the sacrifices you make for those you love and the price you pay for making those sacrifices.
"Dying by the Hour" is not just a story about lovers and sacrifice, however.
Far from it: This is a crackling good adventure story complete with gunfights, kidnappings, hand-to-hand combat and enough psychotic characters to fill the average asylum. If you like action, you'll certainly find it in "Dying by the Hour."
Shrum is an excellent storyteller with a firm command of the language and a strong narrative sense. Her characters are finely drawn and her plotting is seamless. She sets a scene without a lot of superfluous description and, as a result, puts the reader in the moment without slowing down the narrative with useless details.
And, just as she did in her first novel, Shrum ends this book leaving her readers wondering what happens next.
Personally, I can't wait to find out.

Dying for the Next One

Some of the other reviewers have posted a fabulous plot synopsis, so I'm going to focus on the elements that made me fall in love with this series all over again.

I read a ton of urban fantasy, and keeping a series interesting and engaging, while fresh and new, is nearly impossible. Shrum pulls it off, though, and I'm dying for the third book in this series. She splits the book between Jesse and Ally's POV while remaining in first person, and clearly marks who's chapter it is, but there was never a doubt as to who was speaking. Each character's voice is distinctly different, not just in tone and phrasing, but their worldview and who they are. I really enjoyed the peek into Ally's head and I hope Shrum continues this trend. Shrum makes the best use of having multiple views by showing us the girls keeping secrets from each other, and giving them their own inner demons to fight.

I was also impressed with Shrum's ability to cut right to the quick as well. She doesn't shy away from the hard to handle subjects about how far is too far, and the moral consequences of your actions, but the book never felt preachy. The difficult situations the characters faced felt more real because of how the characters struggled and handled them. It really made them come alive.

I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series. Shrum has expanded her original concept in DYING FOR A LIVING in this next installment, but there's so much more for us to explore.

Reading about Belinda and Bennett always makes me smile. Belinda gets into sticky situations and Bennett, the hot, boyfriend is always there to help her out. Their relationship is still fairly new, but you can tell their love runs deep even though Belinda is scared to tell Bennett how she truly feels.

Keep You On Your Toes Mystery

First I want to say that I highly recommend that you read the first books in the Belinda an Bennett mystery series before reading this book. I haven't read any of the other books in this series. And I was a little bit lost at first because things kept being brought up that happened in previous books. So I'm going to go back and read the rest of the series myself so I will fully understand the references to them in this book.

The book itself was very good.And I didn't for a minute expected the killer to be who it turned out to be. This book had me thinking everyone and anyone except the actual killer. I love books like that. Also I liked how this story ended. It ended with a definite cliffhanger. So now I'm hoping and anticipating another book is in the works. I both love and hate stories like that. I love knowing another great mystery is coming. But hate it because I have to wait on the next book.

I highly recommend this book. Like I said, if you can, go back and read the other books in the series first so you don't feel like you are lost when reading this story.

Sweet mystery, with a bit of romance on the side...

Since this is my first Belinda and Bennett story, it took me a while to figure out the characters and some of the back story; I wish I had read the previous books as it would have made my personal reading more enjoyable. Having said that, this was a “sweet” romance book with a new mystery for these two to help solve. It was fun and light, a nice change from heavier reading. I did enjoy the secondary characters – poor Jonas doesn’t know what is about to hit him, at least in my humble opinion. Belinda pokes her nose into his life and it is sending him in circles. Very fun! I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I will pick up the other books in the series so I can get the full back story AND to figure out what Belinda and Bennett will get into next.

Page turning Fun!

This fun and fast paced read draws you in from the very start. The story is filled with a cast of quirky & very believable characters, who spring from the pages and grab hold of you for a very entertaining ride! The plot if full of twists and turns requiring me put on my own detective hat, as all good mysteries should. The author really lets us inside the heads and hearts of her subjects in sometimes funny, sometimes moving, but always intriguing ways. Like all great books, "Where the Hell is Myra Atkinson" left me wanting more pages to turn...I am hooked and hope to we'll be seeing the folks of The Atkins Detective Agency again in the near future. My question is... Where the hell is Lu Erickson's next book??

Anxiously awaiting Lu's next endeavor!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's much "lighter hearted" than most mysteries that I read and maybe that's why it was so enjoyable. I don't know much about character development but I loved the characters in this book. The author is a friend of a friend and I purchased the book in Kindle format mostly just to support a local. I was surprised by how much I liked it. The Sacramento references made me smile: one made me do the dreaded LOL!

About the Author
Andrea Frazer is married with four grown-up children, and lives in the Dordogne with her husband Tony and their six cats. She has wanted to write since she first began to read at the age of five, but has previously been busy raising a family and working as a lecturer in Greek (she has a Fellowship Diploma in Greek) and teaching music. Apart from writing, Andrea continues to teach music, and now also teaches French to expatriates. Her interests include playing several instruments, reading, and choral singing with two choirs.

Humorous, but flawed

This is the second book in a light-hearted series--as lighthearted as one can get about murder. I had trouble getting past the fact that the author sometimes uses words incorrectly. The problem was usually not one of grammar, but of meaning. Get a good dictionary! Or perhaps, use only words of which you are certain you know the meaning and common usage. That said, the plot of this book was fairly formulaic but the characters are engaging and I found the use of humor helped me get past the things that made me wince.

I read the first one and although it is too formula, the characters are interesting and funny. Then I read this one. Same formula, murderer predictable, but the worst part is that the ending was very unsatisfying and not convincing. I will try the third one and then decide if I read more.

Not worth it

Badly written with story-lines that trail off to nowhere and shallow two-dimensional characters. The author straddles the bridge between comedy and mystery and fails and falls on both counts. The most annoying part is the bracketed "interjections" from the writer strewn throughout the pages, presumably intended to be amusing, but which are simply irritating. I wouldn't have bothered reading this second book if I hadn't optimistically ordered two at the same time, and the other was just as bad. Luckily, inexpensive, so I didn't feel too badly but I won't order any more books of this author.

How does a man fall in love with a goddess?

Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was born on January 27, 1836 in the city now known as Lviv in Ukraine. At the time, the city was in the Galicia region of Austria-Hungary and was called Lemberg. His early books were mostly non-fiction historical treatises written while he was a professor at the University of Lviv while his later works were short stories and novels.

Sacher-Masoch's 1870 novel Venus in Furs is his most commonly available book in English. The Mother of God was originally published in Leipzig as Die Gottesmutter in 1883. This is its first translation into English. The translator, William Holmes, is a semi-retired anaesthetist from Northern Ireland. Not liking the abrupt ending, Holmes not only translated the book, but added three additional chapters to the end "to bring it to a more satisfactory ending."

I do not agree with Holmes decision to tack on three additional chapters of what can only be thought of as fan fiction to a 132 year old novel. His writing style is not the same, and he shifts the point of view from Sabadil to Mardona. I feel that Sacher-Masoch ended the story abruptly so that the reader would look back into the text for deeper meanings, not project a satisfactory ending. Fortunately, it is very clear in the book that this was done and the reader can view the extra chapters as the translator's work and not the authors. Holmes' translation flows well and where there are references that might not be clear to a modern English-speaking readership, he provides helpful notes to explain them or their significance.

The book tells the story of Sabadil, a 30 year old introverted farmer from the countryside around what is now Kolomyya, Ukraine. He prefers to walk in the woods alone and listen to birds singing rather than to socialize with his neighbors. On one of these solitary excursions he meets and becomes enthralled with Mardona, the charismatic young female leader of a Christian sect of a neighboring village called the Duchobarzen. Known to her followers as the Mother of God, Mardona is treated by them with unquestioning devotion, and has become a spoiled tyrant, yet she feels a strange attraction to Sabadil and his infatuation with her.

The Duchobarzen may have been modeled on the Dukhobors who were a 19th century Russian sect known for pacifism, egalitarianism, and communal living that used the life of Jesus to guide their faith and practice. The Duchobarzen of this novel were a community of a couple hundred farmers who are guided by the wisdom of Mardona and who live a simple life of prosperity, hard work, and communal living.

Mardona's divine love for her community is all-encompassing and egalitarian but isolating. Placed above them, they worship her as a divinity in their midst, kneeling before her and kissing her boots, and treating her every word as sacred. Coming from outside the community, Sabadil's love for her is the human love of a man for a woman. This is a new experience for Mardona, whose other lovers have always been intimidated by her divine nature, and she likes it, but doesn't know how to respond. As she makes Sabadil part of the community, she treats him like a pet that she strokes and keeps by her side.

Through his eyes we see the tension grow between his unrequited love and her annoyance at his failure to fit into the community until it reaches an explosive and shocking ending. This is a novel filled with details of 19th century farming life in central Europe and it is a fascinating look at the experience of divine and human love.

Sacher-Masoch is known to modern readers for his writings on the theme of powerful women and the men who become fascinated and enthralled by them. He was also well known in his own time for his writings about the local ethnic groups of central Europe and their customs. The Mother of God combines these two themes and shows the author at the peak of his literary career.

I loved this book, I was fascinated by the characters.

Wow, a page turner for sure! I typically like to read my books an hour or so at a time because of my schedule. But I bought this book on Thursday and here it is Saturday and I'm done reading it. That's a record for me. I really enjoy stories with twists and turns, you think you know what's coming and the author takes you somewhere unexpected, keeping you glued to the characters and their participation in the story line. The characters melded well together. I like that the book had politics, crime, sex, intrigue and suspense. It was easy to picture in my minds eye the characters actually living the story and the locations involved especially the picturesque south of the border town where one of the characters ended up hiding out trying to begin a new life although on the run (that's all I'll say about that, don't want to give too much away).

Do I see a series of Jack Keller books? I hope so...this is a winner.

Twists and Turns

I love a good mystery. In Icy Betrayal the mystery was solved in the first 40 pages, but then a new twist, and then a turn. I honestly didn't know what was coming next. The characters are very complex, Jack Keller reminds me of Harry Bosch. Very entertaining read. I hope another Jack Keller mystery is in the works.

This story will grab you and your curiosity immediately. There are twists and turns that will keep you from being able to put the book down. I highly recommend it and I'm waiting for the next Jack Keller thriller.

POLITICAL THRILLER OF THE HIGHEST ORDER

I have always been fascinated with the U.S. and Cuban relations and the saber rattling back and forth. I also have believed that behind the scenes of all the bluster there were men with other motives: money, murder, blackmail, drugs, assassinations. Owen Parr's Political Thriller, Due Diligence, is so closely written to reality that he must have inside evidence of the crimes committed by both sides. The fictional account of these events potentially could be life-threatening to Mr. Parr if the wrong people read his shocking tale of International intrigue and duplicity.

PARR PAINTS AN ACTION MOVIE IN YOUR MIND. WHAT A RIDE !

It helps to be from Miami. The University of Miami once housed the CIA as thousands of Cubans fought Castro from the University's South Campus. Suspense oozes up from the sidewalks in Miami. Odors of delicious garlic-laced food and pungent flowers hang in the air. Things happen here. They are called "Miami Moments". And they happen much like it does to the characters in Due Diligence experience. Alex, the main character, gets recruited at UM by CIA. Lots of students actually did. Owen Parr is a skillful observer of political world events and the wretched psyche of the Castro Bros. He understands how people with unfettered power, unchallenged by law, can visit tragedy and pain on those who disagree. Few people know that Castro, a world class criminal, personally ran the Dirección de Inteligencia, He ran it viciously. Owen Parr must know this, because Alex, the main character weaves in and out of the web the Castro's have created for their various venal and devastating strategies. Due Diligence is a suspense-filled movie in your mind. Parr rolls the film, controls the color and sound exquisitely; he teases you, he jolts you with action and takes you up and down the roller coaster. Cuban men LOVE their women and -- well-- it is pretty obvious that Parr is a Cuban man. And, of course Julia and Paris and Chicago and Miami Beach and Havana swirl around the stage set, painted and lighted by Parr. Does Alex's beloved Julia survive the action? How could she? Who or what is "Chico and Gang"? To find out--- do your own "Due Diligence".

Review: This is the story of Alex and Julia, two Cubans that happen to cross paths in Paris; however, this is not your typical love story. Set against the backdrop of Cuba's social politics and vibrant landscapes, Due Diligence is a tale of corruption and power. Through the eyes of Fidel Castro, a crucial character in the plot, readers are introduced to an enriching history of Cuba and a ploy to commandeer a government.

It would seem that there is conspiracy lurking in the shadows, and somehow Alex and Julia are tossed in the mix. Alex is this hard-core, CIA militant with a boxer's build and Julia is a descendant of the 1st president of Cuba. Although they are two vital pieces in this convoluted chess match, they somehow created a sparkling chemistry, adding a strong romantic element to this covert thriller.

For the most part, this was a well-written and exquisitely crafted story, but, personally, I'm not big on politics, so some of the details were a bit daunting and complex. I find that this would be better suited for those who are into army-style and political co-ops.

IF YOU LIKED BOOK 1, THIS NEXT ONE'S FOR YOU!!!!!!!

First off, I did read it in under a few hours (my favorite pastime, or I sould say my all time hobby, love to read . Super read, picked up where the 1st book left off. Now all I'm waiting on is the next Book in this series. "Marine's in the Apocalypse 3. Can't wait to see how the beginning of this one will incorporate's Lara story and really hope it's smooth sailing for a little bit. But of course this being about the Zombie Apocalypse anything can happen and probably will. But still rooting for the last few good guys left, that we know of so far.Maybe we will see some more Marine's join the group. I can only hope. "Labor Day, Marine's in the Apocalypse"is due out real soon. Ready and waiting. It just keep getting better. SEMPER FI

Smith hasn't lost his fastball.

Anthony Neil Smith is the rightful heir of the creeping madness of Jim Thompson. Does this mean he'll gain a cult following after his death only? I do not know, but what I do know is that he just cracked another one out of the park with WORM, a novel I had the most difficult time to stop myself reading.

If you want to create some successful hardboiled/noir nowadays, you need to have an original setting and Smith struck gold with North Dakota and the economic boom of fracking. His characters are greedy men looking for a second start in life where they could finally become somebody. Really, everybody has two names in this novel. Ferret's boss Pancrazio might be one of the most layered, deceitfully complex and hilariously grotesque characters he's ever created. He's the kind of character you can only find in a ANS novel.

WORM might not be the meanest swing Anthony Neil Smith has ever taken at human race, it's sneaky-humane at time, but Smith's tremendous talent for crude dialogues and bleak description carries this novel effortlessly. If you have friends who aren't into Smith yet, this is a great starting point.

Brutally Entertaining Noir with a Dire Warning Underneath

Where there's a boom, there's going to be money. Where there's money, there's going to be crime. And where there's crime, there's going to be a guy like Neil Smith to expose the lowlifes trying to make an extra dollar on top of the heap of oil revenue they're already making.

WORM follows Ferret, an honest Joe on an oil rig trying to support his family in the boom, as his unassuming curiosity corrupts him into a hardcore criminal. It's a brutal, at times disgusting, sometimes hilarious, harrowing but overall fantastic read that offers a glimpse at how the prairie changed since the boom hit.

Don't pass this one up. Oil booms will come and go for the rest of the foreseeable future. WORM could just as easily be dropped into the next one as the current NoDak fracking explosion. Be entertained, but also be warned. There is a definite human cost to every barrel pulled out of the ground, something Smith makes clear with every blow in WORM.

Worm is a great gritty crime noir by an author who is becoming ...

Worm is a great gritty crime noir by an author who is becoming one of my favorite gritty crime noir authors. Smith's worlds are rough but all of the humanity isn't lost. This story is set in the oil fields of North Dakota, which apparently still contains some type of outlaw frontier vibe to it. I've seen complaints about the authenticity of the oil worker world or whatever and honestly I don't care because this story is entertaining. As a medical professional, sometimes it gets on my nerves when people are wildly off base with their procedure descriptions and clinical terminologies, but that's only when it's blatant the author didn't attempt any research and was just throwing stuff out there. If the reader can tell an effort was made then the occasional slip up is irrelevant especially if the story is on point. If there really are any slip ups in this book anyways.

Anyways there are drug dealers, murders, biker gangs, Bosnian war criminals and many other exciting things going on in Worm. There are some twists in the story and great characters too. If your into gritty crime novels then pick up Worm and read it. While you do that I will continue to work my way through the rest of Anthony Neil Smiths Catalog. I think I am going to check out the Adem and Mustafa series.
