About the Author
Jack Lynch modeled many aspects of Peter Bragg on himself. He graduated with a BA in journalism from the University of Washington and reported for several Seattle-area newspapers, and later others in Iowa and Kansas. He ended up in San Francisco, where he briefly worked for a brokerage house and as a bartender in Sausalito, before joining the reporting staff of the San Francisco Chronicle. He left the newspaper after many years to write the eight Bragg novels, earning one Edgar and two Shamus nominations and a loyal following of future crime writers. He died in 2008 at age 78.

Hardboiled reading!!!

I had Jack Lynch recommended to me, by Joan and Annie, co-owners of the now closed Cousin's Used Bookstore and never came across any of his books.
So I was excited to see 'Die For Me', on netgalley.com and even more that Brash Books approved my request.
Originally released in 2002, titled as Wolf House, takes place in the 80's, it's hard-boiled fiction at it's best and you'll believe in psychic's at least for a while.
This was a totally enjoyable read, like Lynch's writing style and that he used his own life experience molding his Peter Bragg character. It made for some great reading, could relate to it, full of twist and turns and like the fast pace to it.
Feel like Lynch with his style, he makes you read every word, and you skip nothing in his writing.
Peter Bragg's a likeable character, a retired newsman, turned private detective, believable and at his best when involved in a case. Lynch put a great support cast around Bragg, has the knack to create vivid likable characters and some easily could have had series created about themselves.
Sheriff Detective Sgt. Barry Smith and Sheriff Detective Rachel Goodwin would make for some good reading in their own series. Then Maribeth, Bobbie, Karen Ellis, girlfriend Allison France and even the bad guy all play important roles, they stand out in the storyline and make it all workout perfectly.
Life goes full circle for Bragg. When the lady who's life he saved from suicide, on his final day as a reporter, calls him.
Let's him know she's a psychic, has a vision about a burial site near a vineyard in Sonoma and Bragg brings it to the police. I really like the premise that the police let him be involved in the case.
Bragg in his own way, puts the pieces together and ultimately solves the case. You'll have to read to find out how he does it.
Highly recommend reading Jack Lynch. Just wish we had more than just the eight Peter Bragg to enjoy. Absolutely love that were seeing hard to find, long out of print books being reissued as ebooks.

The final Bragg book

"Die for Me" is one of the older detective novels that Brash Books is reissuing in paper and ebook. It was published as "Wolf House" in 2002. It is an appealing and very readable serial killer mystery set in the Bay Area, one of eight Bragg novels written by Jack Lynch who died in 2008.
In this, the final published book in the series, Bragg is revealed through his relationships with the women around him – friends, lovers and new acquaintances. He is as an intelligent man who tries to be conscientious in his relationships with women, to do right by them if he can. There are relatively few important men in this story.
The mystery itself is straightforward, with the killer pretty clear from early on, but that doesn't matter because we are very much drawn into the stories of the people involved: the psychic who starts the investigation, her niece who is an attractive, spirited woman, Rachel the perceptive cop, Karen who runs a modeling agency, even the dumb PR guy Pershing (good name) from the governor's office. I like Harvey Draper the forensics guy who shows a human face and Max Bolero who has chosen his own musical name.
A note on the cover. There is no streetcar in this book and I am mystified why Brash put one on the cover. OK, Bragg is based in San Francisco but there were many other compelling images in the story that the artist could have used without spoiling the plot.

Peter Bragg is a guy who gave up his job on a San Francisco newspaper and is now pursuing his career as a private detective. Suddenly his past has caught up with him and now Marianne, a woman he once saved from a dive off the Golden Gate Bridge, is calling to request his help. She has discovered she has a “gift” and is now working as a psychic consultant. Recently she has had a vision of the hillside burial site of victims of violent unsolved crimes. The only problem is that in that same vision she has also seen her own future as it relates to this case and that future is pretty grim. Marianne is not really sure of where the bodies are buried but has a general "feel" for the area. With the help of Sonoma County Sheriff’s Detective Barry Smith, Bragg sets out to discover the elusive burial site and when they do what they discover is nothing short of mind boggling.
This is an above average tale featuring an old school detective. While the damsel in distress story line is familiar, author Jack Lynch has managed to give it a new spin and make it new utilizing equal parts imagination and forceful literary skills. To reveal more would be a crime but for lovers of the books of Dashiell Hammitt and James M. Cain this is a perfect page turner to start your summer.
