I really enjoyed this book!

To be perfectly honest, I'm not a big fan of anything that has to do with medicine, doctors, and especially blood, stabbings and gore. My dad, on the other hand, loves these types of stories and his recommendation for Immortal Fear was so strong that I decided to pick it up for myself. It was a good call.
Well written, with a crisp pace and fully fleshed-out characters, the story grabs you up and takes you on a whirlwind ride that, for me at least, was quite exhilarating. A kind of 'Frankenstein meets modern technology' story, it kept me engaged from start to finish and, at times, had my heart-rate going at a nice clip. It's very rare that anything I read does that, and it was pleasurable I have to admit.
The author's writing style is much better than the vast majority of the books I've purchased on Amazon, by far, and the story, while not exactly unique, is strong. Like my dad I highly recommend it, especially for readers who like medical related thrillers combined with a little bit of sci-fi.

A superbly written thriller that had me enthralled throughout

After settling in on a long and quiet weekend with just me and the book, I can easily say that this series is my newest addiction. Having a penchant for medical thrillers along the lines of Robin Cook and Michael Crichton, I now can add this author to the list. The authority by which Dr. Clark writes his novels comes from his actual medical background. The illustrative descriptions and vivid imagery are so well done that suspension of disbelief is all too easy, letting you just relax into the story and become enveloped entirely. This novel, beginning with a focus on the actions of Jack the Ripper, is a thoroughly intriguing tale that ratchets up the intensity as the plot moves forward. I especially enjoy how the author jumps time sequences to show what happened to people in various situations, e.g., Jenny hitchhiking to Spokane in retrospective to her attack. This created a deeper bond with the characters, furthering my attachment to the story. As a point of fact, all of the characters created in the novel are multidimensional beings, devoid of the caricatures one often sees in the genre.
Another point to note about our protagonist is that unlike other series heroes, his actions are believable, even in environments where you wouldn't normally think so. From knowing about airplane details to boarding across the salt flats, his actions never jarred me loose from the plot because his actions were well within the confines of his expected abilities. Also, the interjections of humor (a jar of salami?) peppered about were perfectly timed amidst the tension. Finally, the end had an expertly tailored catharsis that left me immediately wishing to read the next escapade that our good Dr. is going to get in to.
In summary, if anyone else is looking for a bang up novel that is on par with the best writers out there, then you can't do any better than this. I've no doubt I'll read it again and keep it in my personal library at least until the next in the series arrives; something that couldn't happen soon enough.

He is good at his job and an even better part-time sleuth

H.S. Clark’s second medical thriller, Immortal Fear, follows Dr. Paul Powers as he races against time to track down a killer organ donor. Yes, you read that correctly, and no it is not a killer whose victims are organ donors. Dr. Paul Powers, think Magnum P.I. meets Derek Shepherd, is an anesthesiologist at a top hospital in Seattle. He is good at his job and an even better part-time sleuth. The story for Dr. Powers begins with The Cascade Killer’s latest victim arriving at the hospital barely alive and needing emergency surgery. As the resident anesthesiologist on duty, Dr. Powers is brought on to the case and goes into surgery. With Dr. Powers’ help the victim survives, and with her description, helps the police catch and kill the killer.
Early in the book the killer is apprehended and one would think, what else is there to tell? Well, the Cascade Killer appears to be undead as more victims are popping up all over the greater Seattle area. So now one must wonder, how does Dr. Paul Powers come into play, he’s just an anesthesiologist right? Wrong. Dr. Paul Powers uncovers the truth and it is so far-fetched he has to prove it before any one believes him. H.S. Clark’s story takes you on a wild ride across state lines and through hidden doors as Dr. Power’s works against time to prove the unbelievable and save the world from a literal, killer epidemic.
As with many medical thriller storylines, I was met with an unbelievable plot. Fortunately H.S Clark has an ability many writers do not, and through the grace of story and character development mixed with medical knowledge he creates an environment that allows the story to unfold naturally and without much coaxing. My hats off to H.S. Clark for accomplishing a fast-paced, informative, and intriguing thriller that had me e-booking his first novel, Secret Thoughts, before I finished Immortal Fear. I would recommend this book for those true medical thriller fans who like to read a story and learn a little about the scary world of real-life medical possibilities.
