Very well written novella, a gritty police thriller with a dash of the supernatural

I wanted to give 4.5 stars, but that's not possible, so I flipped a coin and it came up 5!
There’s a lot of good things to say about this book, so I’ll get the bad out of the way first, with the caveat that this might just be one of those “matter-of-taste” things: I didn’t like the magic eye. It felt like a gimmick. And I didn’t like that the denouement just so happened to make use of the power of the magic eye to see through things. It felt contrived.
The magic eye was the one supernatural thing which stuck out a mile from the realism of what is an extremely well written book. Particularly impressive was the natural, unhurried and extremely engaging dialogue and an unglorified, gritty portrayal of the police world. The feeling of tension during the questioning of suspects was also very well realized and executed.
In addition, this book was perfectly edited, not a typo in sight, and the writing was tight, restrained and very tasteful.

We see what we want to see

A headless body is found in San Francisco bay, starting a crime investigation into the murky depths of human trafficking and Spanish lore that only Inspector Lukas Ricther and his mystical eye can solve.
This book was a fun, quick read. Inspector Richter makes every scene he’s in different from a usual crime drama, never making it feel formulaic or done before. If you like mysteries with strong interactions between characters, this book is chock full of them. My only complaint, besides wanting it longer, is that I wish it took things a little further into the strange cult / mythos the author served up in the story. Wearing someone’s face to become them would make some interesting scenes. Nonetheless, have fun with it!

Unusual police procedural with vivid characters

I’ve read my share of mysteries and police procedurals and was delighted to discover that the Bloodless Mask was uncommon in both its plot and well-sculpted characters. Inspector Richter has an unusual quirk that places him a notch above other detectives in the SFPD. San Francisco’s foggy surrounds and wide ethnic diversity gives this whodunit a great backdrop as he and two different partners try to unravel the odd murder of a twelve-year old girl that takes over a decade to solve. The dialogue was crisp and natural, and I enjoyed the wild chase at the end. I’m looking forward to more in this series and hope the next excursion with Lukas Richter is a full length novel.
