"After all that work and sleuthing and investment in my great detective notebook, I had nothing. In fact, the only successful thing I’ve done since stepping foot on this island was successfully believe all the lies everyone told me. Oh, I’ve also successfully been attacked, successfully got hit by a door, and successfully eaten more Xanax than I’ve ever eaten before in my life. And in two days I’m supposed to just leave and pretend none of this ever happened. If I can leave after being framed for murder."
When shy, medium-looking Samantha Stone winds up on the romantic tropical island of St. John after getting dumped at the altar, she’s faced with two options: (1) sit in her sweaty villa and cry over her un-marriage to her idiot ex-fiancé while watching Love Actually on repeat and mass-eating Oreos and Xanax, or (2) pursue a hot vacation sexcapade with the gorgeous travel god she meets at baggage claim. Really, what’s a girl to do?
But, after losing both her super spendy non-diamond engagement ring and her mysterious tropical island fling candidate in the same drunken night, Sam quickly learns that St. John isn’t quite what she bargained for. In fact, she'll be lucky to make it back home alive.
Join breakthrough author Katie Bloomstrom as she takes you on a journey into a picture perfect paradise filled with men, money, and mystery where nothing – and no one – is quite what it seems.

First off, I have to say at the time I wrote this, I am pretty sure I am the only one who actually paid for this book and did not get a free copy in hopes of the author getting me to write an honest review like most of the other ones I read. That being said, this is honest and even though it was painful at times, I read it all the way through just to be completely fair and give the author a fair chance.
It's not that the book was dreadful, it's just that the author has a lot of work still to do. First, she writes like someone in high school with her slang terms and constant repetition of the same thing over and over again like she is more concerned with word count than content or has lost her train of thought and needs to remind herself instead of just reading back two pages. What bothered me most of all though and almost made me throw the book across the room had it been an actual hard copy and not my iPad I was reading it off of, was her annoying repetition of the stupid word epical. The author had to have used the word at least every couple paragraphs. Between that word and vomitous, I seriously just wanted to buy the author a thesaurus and show her that there are other words in the English language. It was annoying and tedious. Most of the time, it was pointless and made no sense. I do not know if epical is a word used in the Midwest a lot, but I am from Arizona and have traveled quoted a bit all up and down the western and southern states and even into Europe and never in my life have heard that term used, which was not a big deal if it was used a few times, but when it is gnawed to death the whole book, it just makes the book sound childish and immature like the author has no other words in her vocabulary.
Secondly, I have been to St. John where the book takes place and one of the things that bothered me was that the author failed to give any description at all to how absolutely breathtaking this location is. Her only description was once again her constant venting of how sweaty it was. Her big flaw in that, was that she also mentioned that there was a tropical storm coming in and she could not get off the island. Well, I can tell you that even when there is not a tropical storm, you get these breezes hat blow in off the shore and through the trees that make you forget all about the humidity and the sweaty bangs she keeps talking about plastering to her face, if she felt these breezes, she would instantly have that refreshing sigh reminding her of why the island was so popular and why people flocked their year after year. She never talked about the lush trees or flowers that you really don't see anywhere else or the clear blue green waters that take your breath away. Her descriptions for a blog post and an author fell completely flat.
Finally, possibly the most disappointing was that the author never started out with any kind of a hook. It wasn't until about a third into the book before you actually know what the crime is. She spends more time talking about the town and people of Elkton which she does not even spend a single moment of in the book Than she does actually hooking you into the plot and mystery. To really capture her readers, she should have started out writing something more like: I never in my life thought that I could get dumped at the alter, then go on my honeymoon alone, only to get knocked unconscious, kidnapped, witness a murder, almost get killed, meet super hot guys who could or could not be trying to kill me or have sex with me or may be lying, but then a lot of people are lying. I think I am getting ahead of myself. Let me start at the beginning and tell you how it all started and maybe you can tell me what I should do. That is if anyone is reading this, because it is my first time ever writing a blog post and I don't really know what I am doing.
If she had written something more on those lines, she would have grabbed her readers from the start and they would have kept reading to find out what happened next and how it played out. Anyway, the author has potential, but she just needs to sharpen her writing skills and start writing more like an adult than a teenager.
Is it worth buying? I spent $2.99 which is a lot for a new author but I bought it based on the high reviews. For a first book, I think if it was lowered to .99 to get readers in, it might be worth it, but at the higher price, with all the epical and redundant issues, it was just too painful for me to recommend to anyone for hat price. If the author does some editing, than perhaps, yes.

Seriously hilarious chick-lit mystery novel
By LifeWithJoy
Review originally posted on my blog www.livinglifewithjoy.com
The Trouble With St. John is the first book in the Samantha Stone mystery series. I would classify this story as a seriously hilarious, chick-lit mystery novel. We’ve got a petite, small-town girl that has a penchant for mixing Xanax and wine on our hands. She swears like a sailor and uses entertaining slang like ‘spendy’ to describe expensive things. After finding herself in one-too-many strange situations, Samantha begins to start thinking like 007. Will she be able to figure out what’s going on before it’s too late?
The novel is written in first person narrative through the voice of her online blog diary. It’s got a bit of a Bridget Jones’s Diary feel to the blog entry introductions, or you could even compare it to a grown-up version of The Princess Diaries in terms of the format, but this novel was much funnier than either of the two! I found myself laughing out loud and shaking my head at the ridiculous things that Samantha was doing and thinking throughout the story.
This novel was filled with drama, chaos, scandalous secrets and left me wanting more. Throw in a good dose of sexy encounters with gorgeous and mysterious men, and a healthy gulp of wine, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for love and laughter. Despite all of the mysterious situations, this novel left me wanting to go on my own tropical vacation!
Memorable Moments:
In reality, I’m twenty-eight. I hate being called Sammy, I don’t have pigtails, and I don’t like to color. Not anymore, at least. Okay, maybe I do still color sometimes. With my niece. Whatever.
No matter how the story starts, it’s always the same: I am a loser with a horrible, losery life and negative thought process. My only real friend is my iPad, with which I write this loser blog diary that no one reads or even knows about. Am thinking seriously about giving up, buying a hypoallergenic cat, and becoming the token Elkton spinster.
My Rating: 5/5 Stars [Please note, I received an ARC for review. If this was the final edited copy, I would have given it a 4 due to multiple grammatical errors that I found left and right. However, I’m hoping that all errors were found and fixed prior to the final edited copy being published.]

A Good Mystery with Interesting Twists
By Aki
I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Let me start with the fact that Samantha Stone is a bundle of surprise for a young woman filled with mostly Vicodin and booze. I almost felt more sorry for her liver than I did her but in my defense, it's been through a lot more and, keep in mind, Samantha has been shot at, left at the altar and nearly drowned.
The thing I enjoyed most about this book was that Samantha is a really likeable character and despite her actions and choices (don't mix alcohol and pills, kids), she is a surprisingly intelligent woman. I, like her antagonists and allies, underestimated her. When she uses her intelligence (I don't even think she realizes what a smart cookie she is), it takes her to leads and conclusions I never even thought about.
I got rather impatient with her pity party (and trust me, she had enough for every one and the island and then some) but then I realized, this is how actual people would react and behave. Given her personality and history, this is pretty consistent. She does make some silly mistakes (some had me going "You can not be serious, really?") but some of them made sense, she isn't some super spy nor is she the daughter of a very competent detective. Samantha Stone is a girl from a tiny town with a boring job and a pain in the ass boss which she despised. Her one dream is to get out of said town and only that. She isn't prepared for what is thrown at her but damn does she not dig in her heels and try to hit anyway (sometimes it's a home run).
Another thing I like is that Samantha drives the story rather than the other way around. All her actions led to the conclusion and though the diction would take others some time to get used to, it is an enjoyable story.
So as you can easily tell, Samantha is my favourite character. Everyone else is pretty likeable to her overly concerned parents to the fabulously rich and gorgeous Leah (who is a bloody sweetheart, I swear, kind of pushy but she has her own agenda so I let it go)
There are problems but it's typical stuff one experiencing from watching tv shows and books; nothing that really takes you from the story but they just remind you that it IS a story. It was able to make a cliche surprise me though, so kudos there.
The Trouble With St. John: A Samantha Stone Novel is a funny mystery that I would recommend wholeheartedly. I want to read the sequel when it comes out because I'm invested to learn the fate of XXXX and see how much Samantha will continue to grow as a detective and a person.
