Original, entertaining, and skillfully written, "The Fatal Sin of Love" is a terrific read from beginning to end and very highly recommended for library Mystery/Suspense collections.

Chen's novels always involve very relevant events in China's history as part of the plot, educating as well as entertaining readers at every opportunity. The settings in the story are delightfully depicted and one can imagine the glorious scenes while touring the fields of tea shrubs, or staying in the charming inns nestled in the mountainside of the Wuyi Mountains.
This was a great read and I recommend "The Fatal Sin of Love" to young adults as well as adult fans of the mystery, romance and historical fiction genres.

One of the most engaging points of the novel is Chen's ability to weave Chinese history into the investigation. As someone unfamiliar with modern Chinese history, I found this to be a very pleasant addition to the story that allowed the reader to gain a better appreciation for both the setting and the complexities of kinship central to the story.From Portland Book Review

Major Step Forward in New Series!

G. X. Chen might not yet have gained the status of famed Charlie Chan, but the tone and tenacious style of investigation by the two main characters is quite similar... Keep writing G. X. Chen!
Before we begin on this book, you might want to check out my review of an earlier novel, The Mystery of Moutai... This is actually the third mystery book for Chen, but the second since the Back Bay Investigation Agency has begun in a series. This time Ann Lee, and later Fang Chen, are brought into the mystery by her roommate, Jane Tian, who was called by her father from China! He had become heir to a large estate left by a cousin and he needed Jane to represent him there in America...
What had actually happened to bring this about was that his cousin had been murdered! And Ann's radar had quickly got her interested!
Paul Winderman, detective sergeant of the Boston police department, was already in the neighborhood when the 911 call came from the maid. Soon he was heading through the door of the beautiful brownstone which easily would go for a million. Alex, the owner's dog, was there to meet him as was the maid, who was still crying. As normal, the questions started and he discovered that the deceased had no children to notify. Leaving the maid downstairs, he made his way to the woman's room. He thought she might have had a seizure given the position of the body.
In the meantime, it had not taken Donovan's lawyer long before notifying Jane's father that he was the primary individual to inherit, which would be about 20% of the estate, while the rest would be smaller charities and individuals who would receive a small amount. Jane had been designated as her father's representative to handle everything... Would he have done so if he'd known that his relative had been murdered?
Or that he would soon also be murdered?
Or that an attempt was to be made on Jane's life???
Winderman had enjoyed working with Ann before so he was happy to learn she had a connection to the case and would be able to help as interpreter again. And when the murder occurred in China, he willingly agreed to work with them from Boston to support in any way...Because before long, Jane, together with Ann and Fang, were traveling there to be with Jane's mother and learn what they could about past and present family connections...
Jane and Ann had gone out to celebrate and had enjoyed their dinner and drinks so much that when a package of Godiva Chocolates was found on the doorstep, they just opened them and left them to go on to bed... Actually, it was Coco, their dog, who was the second death...due to the chocolates that Jane would have normally eaten right away. Coco had eaten some while they had slept... When they tested for poison, they discovered it contained arsenic. And, based upon that, they performed an autopsy on Mrs. Donovan, who was also poisoned. The package that had been sent from Boston, supposedly from Jane to her father, had been sent much earlier and had arrived before anybody could realize and notify Jane's family in China. He, too, had received a box of chocolates...
Obviously, the killer either knew what was in Donovan's will, or it was somebody in the family, which really didn't narrow it down since the entire village located on the South China Sea was related in some way...
Nothing seemed to be able to stop this killer and it was clear that the planning had begun quite some time ago. Would they discover who had killed...to gain the millions left in this family inheritance?
This is a good solid mystery that keeps readers involved in solving it, yet at the same time, there is the feeling of a cozy book, even though Ann and Feng have formed an investigation service--to me, it still had the personal flair of a cozy mystery, with the personal lives of the characters much more shared than in a police procedure. In fact, there is a subplot that is fun when Feng, who is just meeting Jane, is immediately attracted to her, while Ann begins to feel jealous, even though she's not previously been attracted to Feng...
I enjoyed exploring the family connections, and even finding a long-lost cousin to Jane and her mother. That resulted in a poignant ending that I thought greatly added to the climax... And, of course, traveling to China as part of a murder investigation proved to add a dimension to be enjoyed for many of us who love to travel in our fictional lives! LOL
This novel makes a clear step forward in the series...Who knows, maybe the ancestors of Charlie Chan will need to take over the Back Bay Agency to prevent a firm competitor to their livelihoods! Really an enjoyable book--Highly recommended...

Effortlessly Intense

I don’t want to give much of the story away because there is so much of it and it’s very intense. Fang Chen and Ann follow an investigation across continents, dedicated detectives that they are, and go deeper into a family history all in effort to solve the question how two seemingly unconnected deaths could be related. Fang Chen quickly becomes overly invested in the case when he finds himself more than professionally concerned for the girl being pursued by a sinister killer. This is where the tension arises between himself and his investigative partner, and where the story really starts.
Chen is excellent at leading her readers through intense situations and keeping them invested emotionally. She’s an excellent author in so many ways. However, taking a step back from the story itself, I love how Chen doesn’t do as most authors might. She doesn’t avoid cultural history and uses her novels as an opportunity to teach a thing or two about events that have shaped Chinese culture and families for generations. I personally didn’t know much about Chinese history before I began reading G.X. Chen’s work — it’s not something that’s readily taught in U.S. school systems, even when you get to a U.S. university.
This novel touches on the subject of the Great Famine — a horrific event in Chinese history in which 36 to 45 million died. Mao Zedong introduced drastic changes which affected farmers — private farm ownership and private farming was prohibited during the catalyst event, The Great Leap Forward. (It was a campaign launched by the Communist Party of China. You can find information anywhere on the web if you want to learn more.) People were meant to collectivize their farming efforts but this ended up being disastrous. Individuals were left starving at grain warehouses, calling for Chairman Mao’s help even as they were denied access to granaries in Hanan and Hebei. Disaster in general was the result of changes in policy and method of farming. Millions starved to death. I can’t even imagine the fact that this was a bare few years back, as recently as 1962. According to most sources, production went from 200 tons of food to a bare 143 tons of food in a period of 4 years.
What we see in this novel, secondarily, is the affect this still has on the mindset of Chinese culture and Chinese farmers. Families still live and remember these times. As in Chen’s other novels, we see how history, no matter how near or far, still leaves ripples on the surface.
The novel itself spans timelines and generations, Chen effortlessly guiding the readers through the past and present, through a culture many don’t know a lot about unless they truly care to. Chen’s work is beautiful in so many ways, and she is a master of tension and leaving a solution untold until the very end.

Unravel the convoluted case of the tainted treats

Jane finds out a distant relative has died and left her father a fortune. Shortly thereafter, she receives a box of poisoned chocolates. Her roommate Anne, and Anne’s best friend Fang Chen are now on the case. Multiples murders spanning two countries keep the amateur sleuths guessing. With the help of Detective Paul Winderman, they work to unravel the convoluted case of the tainted treats.
Overall I thought the book was good, but there were things that made it hard for me to get through it. Point of view was an issue. Sometimes it was hard to tell who was speaking. One sentence would be from the point of view of one character and the next would be someone else. The other thing was that while the writer used an expansive and varied vocabulary, there were syntax errors - words out of order in sentences, as well as general grammatical errors. It often interrupted the flow of the scenes while I stopped to figure out what they meant.
I got the impression the writer is probably not a native English speaker, but is an excellent storyteller. This book would have dazzled me if it had first passed under the pen of a good editor. The twists and turns were interesting. The investigations spanned several generations and continents. I learned things about China I never knew. I liked the book and I would recommend it, but getting through it might take some patience on the part of the reader.
