HE'S BACK. Dakota Stevens. The tough, wisecracking New York private eye. And he's smarter, funnier and sexier than ever.
And so is his "Watson"--brilliant chess grandmaster Svetlana Krüsh. With her dry wit. Her runway legs. Her predator eyes.
A Truth Stranger Than Fiction, the 3rd novel in the critically acclaimed Dakota Stevens Mystery Series, delves into the bizarre, interconnected world of foreign spies and fangirls, mobsters and murderers, government bureaucrats and corporate profiteers.
Manhattan PI Dakota Stevens has just moved into new offices on Fifth Avenue when a young woman walks in with a problem: her older brother, a famous science fiction author, has been missing for a week.
Before Dakota even has a chance to take the case, he and the young woman are accosted by a horde of people searching for the brother: government agents, thugs, mobsters, and two mysterious Chinese men. What could her brother possibly be into?
In a case that leads from the streets of Manhattan to the woods of Upstate New York, to Boston and the shores of Maine, to Washington, D.C. and the Midwest--by foot, train, truck, boat and private jet--what begins as a simple missing persons investigation quickly devolves into the most difficult and personal case of Dakota's career.
In the end, Dakota exposes a secret that literally has the power to change the world.
And the truth is a truth stranger than fiction.
With humor, action, intrigue, and lush writing, A Truth Stranger Than Fiction is a compelling noir mystery in the tradition of Robert Parker and Raymond Chandler.
Praise for the Dakota Stevens Mystery Series from Amazon Customers:
"Orcutt has combined a classic hard-boiled with the page-turning frenzy of a Dan Brown novel."
"PI Dakota Stevens is a cross between Philip Marlowe and Jason Bourne and his partner Svetlana Krush is a chess Grandmaster with the body of a Victoria's Secret model."
"Just when you think you've solved the mystery, Orcutt surprises you with another unexpected twist."
"As for the characters--perfection. Flawed, funny, heroic and developed fully from the first page until the final page."
"I read A Real Piece of Work in three days. Didn't get much sleep...but it was well worth it."
"Dakota Stevens and his indispensable sidekick/chess champion Svetlana Krush are a delightful modern take on the noir detective style."
"The author's ability to paint a picture or scene with words is astounding. This book is ripe for adaptation to film."
"Orcutt weaves a story that keeps you hanging on until the very end."
"People in the reviews keep mentioning Spenser/Robert B. Parker, and they're right; but add a good streak of John Le Carré, turn the roaster up a notch, and maybe you're getting in the ballpark."
"Reading Orcutt is like chasing a lit fuse into a dark tunnel."
"I am now stalking this author on Amazon, anxiously awaiting the release of his next book in the series."

Review
"Fans of Mickey Spillane's more over-the-top Mike Hammer adventures will welcome Orcutt's third Dakota Stevens outing (after 2014's The Rich Are Different). The PI has just moved into a new Manhattan office when a desperate prospective client, 18-year-old Kelsey Wright, asks him to find her missing brother, Conover, a famous science fiction writer who was working on a mysterious new work of nonfiction. But even before Dakota can agree to help Kelsey, who's also upset that she's being tailed, a string of intruders to his office, including FBI agents, thugs from Nebraska, and two mobsters, insist on learning what Kelsey knows about Conover's whereabouts. Dakota and Kelsey later go on the lam, aided by an eccentric group of allies headed by Svetlana Krüsh, a former U.S. chess champion, who plays the role of Velda (Mike Hammer's secretary) to Dakota. Readers should expect plenty of bloodshed and action en route to an unexpected resolution of the mystery." -- Publishers Weekly, Booklife---"A Truth Stranger Than Fiction is a clean, fast-paced mystery thriller, packed with unexpected shifts.... Our hero and narrator, Dakota Stevens, is a witty and charming PI detective hailing from Manhattan.... A Truth Stranger Than Fiction is definitely worth the read. Between the fast pace and the clean, fluid language this story is hard to pause, and it's thought-provoking in its real-world relevance. This story is highly entertaining and fun in its action and humor, but beholden to a deeper focus. From the strategic Mark Twain preface to the surprising climax, Orcutt takes a truth and hides it in plain sight. (4.5 stars)" -- Theresa Caulkins, The Portsmouth Review
From the Author
Is any of A Truth Stranger Than Fiction based in reality?
Absolutely. Without giving any spoilers, I can tell you that the heart of the mystery in A Truth Stranger Than Fiction involves a highly controversial current issue—an issue that is inextricably intertwined with the Earth's future. The novel also deals with corporate profiteering, corporate-government collusion, and espionage.
One Amazon reviewer calls A Truth Stranger Than Fiction "non-Neanderthal noir." What does this mean?
I think that customer reviewer picked up on one of the things I've tried to do with the entire Dakota Stevens Mystery Series, which is this: to use elements of the old noir detective voice, including rich metaphors and fun turns of phrase, but to leave out the misogynistic and gratuitously violent elements.
Yes, Dakota is attractive to women, and yes, he finds them attractive, but he doesn't view women as objects. He truly loves, admires and respects women (i.e., his associate, Svetlana, is accomplished in her own right as a chess grandmaster). All of the female characters in the books, while they might be sexy in some way, are also smart, witty and great at whatever they do.
But in the series, Dakota is not just presented as "attractive to women"; he's very attractive to women—on par with James Bond. How realistic is this?
I'll admit that men as attractive to women as Dakota are rare, but they are out there. I went to college with two guys like him: Matt and Steve. I won't mention their last names because I don't want to intrude on their privacy, but I can tell you that their appeal to women was legendary.

Nothing strange about how wonderful this book is.....
By imnotawaitress
It has taken me a good, long while to write this and I think it's because this is my absolute favourite Orcutt novel to date. I must admit that I feel uncomfortable saying that because, like children, to admit to loving one more than the others is to invite all sorts of guilt to the party. How can I possibly love this one MORE when I already loved the earlier ones? How is it possible that the writing got tighter, faster, funnier and more succinct? How can these characters feel more like family than previously? How is it possible to wait for the next fantastic installment? I have no idea........
If you've read any of Orcutt's previous works, you know that he always brings his A game. If you haven't read him before, what the heck are you waiting for? This book is intelligent AND entertaining and quite frankly, who could ask for anything more?

A must read full of twists, turns and one hot PI called Dakota!!
By Emma
This is my first Chris Orcutt book and even though this is the third outing of the "Dakotas" series I didn't feel lost, confused or out of the loop at all. From the first page I was enraptured by his lead male New Yorker PI Dakota Stevens and his smooth, charismatic but firm way of finding the truth. This male seems to have it all, yet is as disorganised as they come, thankfully his assistant 'master chess player' Svetlana Krush keeps him in check plus their relationship throughout the book kept me thoroughly entertained.
Dakota has moved his office to upstate Fifth Avenue and whilst mid unpacking receives a frantic phone call from a young woman called Kelsey, she brings with her concerns about her missing author brother and before their first meeting has ended the FBI, thugs and other members of society have paid a call to discover his whereabouts.... Dakota now is more than intrigued about taking on this case but it push him to his limits both personally and professionally as the secret he discovers could literally change the lives of everyone on the planet and his feelings become involved too....
A Truth Stranger Than Fiction has it all - action, adventure, mystery, twists and turns and even romance coinciding whilst the group travels across the states of America to discover the truth about Kelsey's brothers whereabouts and why so many people want him.
The relationships and dialogue between the characters is very realistic and even though I'm not a detective genre fan I wasn't able to book this book down until I reached the last page. I am now officially a Dakota addict!!

Orcutt Never Disappoints.
By Hillary E Leftwich
I can’t tell you how easily I sank into this book. The characters are as rich and real as the setting Orcutt created-taking you through a series of twists and turns through different towns-while the characters, rather than lose their vividness, continue to grow and the relationships tug you in along with them. Dakota never fails to deliver his witty charm and compassion, while Svetlana keeps him in check almost in an assuming way. As Dakota’s friendship with Kelsey deepens, as a reader, I was also drawn into this comfort, knowing that although there was no way to be prepared for the outcome to this scenario, I still felt he would figure any situation out, like he always does, but not in the way anyone would expect. Truly great writers, like Orcutt, gain your trust by pouring everything into each sentence, each dialogue, and every character. The characters are not only believable but personable, people you would want to meet in real life, and the scenarios throughout this elaborately crafted story never seem outlandish, rather, something that although is a mystery, also seem convincing. He had me hooked. The dialogue and changes in the characters as they are tested and move forward to find out the final outcome, kept me compelled. The writing was, of course, typical Orcutt: detailed, classic, and humorous in all the right spots. This one is a winner and worth reading. It will not disappoint, but Orcutt never, ever does.
