From Publishers Weekly
Kuper has adapted short works by Kafka into comics before, but here he tackles the most famous one of all: the jet-black comedy that ensues after the luckless Gregor Samsa turns into a gigantic bug. The story loses a bit in translation (and the typeset text looks awkward in the context of Kuper's distinctly handmade drawings). A lot of the humor in the original comes from the way Kafka plays the story's absurdities absolutely deadpan, and the visuals oversell the joke, especially since Kuper draws all the human characters as broad caricatures. Even so, he works up a suitably creepy frisson, mostly thanks to his drawing style. Executed on scratchboard, it's a jittery, woodcut-inspired mass of sharp angles that owes a debt to both Frans Masereel (a Belgian woodcut artist who worked around Kafka's time) and MAD magazine's Will Elder. The knotty walls and floors of the Samsas' house look like they're about to dissolve into dust. In the book's best moments, Kuper lets his unerring design sense and command of visual shorthand carry the story. The jagged forms on the huge insect's belly are mirrored by folds in business clothes; thinking about the debt his parents owe his employer, Gregor imagines his insectoid body turning into money slipping through an hourglass. Every thing and person in this Metamorphosis seems silhouetted and carved, an effect that meshes neatly with Kafka's sense of nightmarish unreality.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Gregor Samsa wakes up and discovers he has been changed into a giant cockroach. Thus begins "The Metamorphosis," and Kuper translates this story masterfully with his scratchboard illustrations. The text is more spare, but the visuals are so strongly rendered that little of the original is changed or omitted. Though the story remains set in Kafka's time, Kuper has added some present-day touches, such as fast-food restaurants, that do not detract from the tale. He has used the medium creatively, employing unusual perspectives and panel shapes, and text that even crawls on the walls and ceilings, as Gregor does. The roach has an insect body but human facial expressions. Once he is pelted with the apple, readers can watch his rapid decline, as his body becomes more wizened and his face more gaunt. This is a faithful rendition rather than an illustrated abridgment.

From Booklist
Kuper follows his adaptations of shorter Kafka stories (Give It Up!, 1995) with one of the author's most renowned works, the tale of Gregor Samsa, who wakes one morning to find himself transformed into a giant insect. Gregor's plight, his growing alienation from his horrified family, and his gradual acceptance of the metamorphosis have come to be viewed as the quintessential symbolic depiction of modern existence. Against all expectations, Kuper's cartoonish style doesn't throw off the story's balance by accentuating Kafka's black humor. Rather, Kuper's visual depiction of Gregor's agony and the family's cruelty toward him points up what is disturbing in the tale, and the portrayal of Gregor's physical deterioration is truly harrowing. Moreover, Kuper's signature scratchboard technique, which resembles traditional woodcut style, suits the story's period, while his lively, expressive drawing lends contemporary vitality. Remaining faithful to its literary origin, Kuper thoroughly inhabits the tale, making his realization a genuine work of posthumous collaboration. The result is a Classics Illustrated with class. Engrossing and disturbing at the same time - fantastic.
By M. Strong
It's fascinating to see the divergent reviews that this book generates; for my part, I couldn't put it down. The book creates a world and atmosphere in which you become completely engrossed - it is a disturbing place to be.

The story follows Joseph K while he is on trial by a seemingly arbitrary court system. What starts out feeling like a cautionary tale about misplaced and abused power quickly gets stranger and morphs into a story of a deeper and more personal trial. Before long, you notice that K is the one who seems to be doing the work of trying himself.

I was left thinking for a long time about the meaning behind the story and a lot of its symbols and components - I don't consider the fact that I still had questions to be a bad thing. On the contrary, this one left me feeling strangely energized.

Highly recommended for people who like philosophy, examinations of the human condition, or existentialism.

Disorder In The Court
By Alex Udvary
We should all know the story concerning one of the greatest novels ever written, about a man being awaken to find out he is under arrest for a crime he knows nothing about, and charged by an unknown person.
It's been debated as to what is really Kafka's novel all about. Some say, it's "hero"(?) Joseph K. represents the "every man". Who has been forced to live in a world, where's man's biggest sin is being himself. The character K. like Kafka himself feels they are an outsider in a world they cannot function in. Others still, see the book as merely a semi-autobiography as Kafka's own feelings of worthlessness. We all know Kafka even doubted his own talents as a writer. But, yet again, others think that "K." is not the "every man". That he is guilty of his "sins".
So, what does all of this prove? It simply goes to show you the impact Franz Kafka has left on the world. Here we have a book published in 1925 and still causes debate as to what exactly were Kafka's intentions. If, infact, he didn't have any intentions!
'The Trial', to me is a story of a man's loneliness. It's a story of man who probably is guilty of what he is charged with. And we slowly read about his desent into a world of paranoia. I've heard some people agrue that what happens to "K." is all merely a dream. None of it ever really happened, but, it was "K." himself who brought this punishment on himself. Sort of like how Kafka himself did by never marrying the girl he loved, by living in the shadows of his father, who he adored, and never having an self confidence. If what happens in 'The Trial' is a dream, you can bet "K." learned something.
There's something about Kafka that fasincates me. He is one of my favorite authors. I find Kafka himself to be just as interesting has the stories he wrote. People tend to forget or overlook something in Kafka's writing. He WAS funny. His novels all have moments that are truly inspired. One of my favorite chapters in this book deals with "The Painter". What happens has "K." trys to leave and the Painter stops him asking him if he wants to buy a painting had me laughing.
For those of you who have never read this book, I do completely recommend it. You will find the book to be fascinating. Kafka was a master of thinking up these surreal stories. You may be bothered by the book's conclusion. Not that you'll mind the final act against "K." but, you'll be bothered by the way it happens. You would have expected more of a set-up. I know I did. Others who read the book may feel the book is incomplete. And that may lead them to dislike it. You are right in your judgement that the book is incomplete, but, remember, Kafka never wanted any of his books published. There's actually a chapter in here that was never finished. And, even though it is incomplete that didn't stop me from truly enjoying this masterpiece. If you have never read anything by Kafka, this is a fine place to start. I hope everyone finds 'The Trial' to be as enjoyable as I did.
Bottom-line: One of the great works by Kafka. It touches on themes that were ahead of their time. Themes that are still around us today. An excellent example of the paranoid mind. Everyone should read this!

Are we all Gregor Sassma? Maybe, Franz, maybe...
By Jeffrey Ellis
For all the debate and argument over what this story means, the plot of the Metamorphosis is refreshingly simple. Gregor Sassma wakes up one morning and discovers that, over the course of the night, he's been transformed into a giant insect. The rest of this novella deals with Gregor's attempts to adjust to his new condition without providing a burden for his parents (who he has spent his life supporting and, it is made clear, veiw their son as little more than a commodity to be exploited) or for his sweet younger sister who Gregor views with an almost heart breaking affection. For his efforts to not bother society with his new insect identity, Gregor is both shunned and eventually destroyed by that same society, which of course now has little use for him. As dark as that plot outline may sound, what is often forgotten (or simply ignored) is that the Metamorphosis is -- in many ways -- a comic masterpiece. Instead of engaging in a lot of portentous philosophizing, Kafka tells his bizarre tell in the most deadpan of fashions. Ignoring the temptation to come up with any mystical or scientific explanations, Kafka simply shows us that Gregor has become an insect and explains how the rest of his short life is lived. This detached, amused tone makes the story's brutal conclusion all the more powerful.
As well, for all the theories on what Kafka's "saying" with this story, the reasons behind Gregor's transformation are not all that complicated or hard to figure out. Kafka, as opposed to too many other writers since, declines to spell out the specific reasons but still makes it clear that Gregor (and by extension, all the other Gregors in the world) had allowed himself to become a powerless insect long before actually physically turning into one. As someone who as selflessly sacrificed whatever independence he may have had to support his uncaring parents and their attempts to live an "upper class" life without actually having to suffer for it, Gregor has already willingly given up all the unique traits that make one a human. For me, even more disturbing than Gregor's fate, is Kafka's concluding suggestions that, now that Gregor has outlived his usefulness, his parents will now move on to his innocent sister. In short, despite the example of Gregor's own terrible fate, society will continue on its way with the majority of us giving up our own humanity to support the whims of a select few.
From the brilliant opening lines all the way to its hauntingly deadpan conclusion, The Metamorphosis is a powerful and satirical indictment of the bourgeois condition. Over the past few decades, the term Kafkaesque has been tossed around with a dangerous lack of discretion. It seems any writer who creates an absurd or dark trap for his main character ends up being labeled Kafkaesque. However, as this story especially makes clear, Franz Kafka was more than just an adjective. He was a unique and individual writer whose brilliance cannot be easily duplicated.

Wildly improbable plot, with lots of vintage humor
By Patto
The Richelieu is a respectable residential hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas, full of residents who have lived there quietly for years. Elderly spinsters and widows predominate. Miss Adelaide is perhaps the most respectable. A woman of considerable bulk with an arthritic knee, she is hardly a fit specimen for the adventures that await her in this book. But she's a tough old bird.

So when Miss Adams enters her suite one evening to find a man hanging from her chandelier with his throat cut, she finds herself uncharacteristically screaming. Miss Adams is not prone to screaming. She's been called an old battle-axe by certain of the younger residents.

This is the beginning of a reign of terror at the Hotel Richelieu, with cops lurking in every corridor, possessions going missing, and more people turning up murdered. For some reason she can't figure out, Miss Adams is a generally in the thick of the action. She doesn't really do any snooping or detecting, although she's inherently nosy, yet she keeps barely escaping with her life from terrible situations.

Her reporting of events is hilarious. She's not afraid to describe herself in ridiculous fixes. She's not afraid of much. Her fears are for other people. Despite her sharp tongue, Miss Adams has a soft heart.

The cast of characters includes lovers at cross-purposes, confused investigators and lots of people with secret agendas. The criminal goings-on at the Richelieu are unbelievably varied and nefarious. The convoluted plot is awash is red herrings. Yet the grumpy but lovable personality of Miss Adams keeps the reader hooked, no matter how improbable things get.

Murder a la Richelieu was first published in 1937. Readers who enjoy vintage mysteries are likely to be charmed by it. There's only one more Miss Adams book: There Is No Return. I've ordered it.

The succinct introduction is very helpful in placing Anita Blackmon among the various styles of Golden Age writers.

I'm so glad to have stumbled across this author.
By Traveler
I adore reading these vintage publications. This book is not great literature, but a laugh-out-loud, fun book. Well written by a woman who paid attention in English class. A good mystery plot, well-drawn characters. The narrator is True South: irascible, yet endearing. This is the first of two books written by Ms. Blackmon.

This would have been a hoot of a film with Margaret Rutherford
By Amazon Customer
Nice characterisation and event filled plot make this an entertaining read. It is interesting to have an early 20th century southern U.S. setting. Compared to modern light novels it is if course quite literate.
I found it more amusing than most murder mysteries of the era.

Two separate crimes, two tragic outcomes.

Jacques Rouleau has moved to Kingston to look after his father and take up the position of head of the town’s Criminal Investigations Division. One hot week in late September, university student Leah Sampson is murdered in her apartment. In another corner of the city, Della Munroe is raped by her husband. At first the crimes appear unrelated, but as Sergeant Rouleau and his new team of officers dig into the women’s pasts, they discover unsettling coincidences. When Kala Stonechild, one of Rouleau’s former officers from Ottawa, suddenly appears in Kingston, Rouleau enlists her to help.

Stonechild isn’t sure if she wants to stay in Kingston, but agrees to help Rouleau in the short term. While she struggles with trying to decide if she can make a life in this new town, a ghost from her past starts to haunt her.

As the detectives delve deeper into the cases, it seems more questions pop up than answers. Who murdered Leah Sampson? And why does Della Monroe’s name keep showing up in the murder investigation? Both women were hiding secrets that have unleashed a string of violence. Stonechild and Rouleau race to discover the truth before the violence rips more families apart.

Review
In Butterfly Kills, Brenda Chapman has written a gripping and disturbing sequel to Cold Mourning. (Glebereport.com)

Altogether, Butterfly Kills is a very satisfying novel (Kingston Whig-Standard)

This novel is well-paced and well-plotted…the book also smartly sets up some subplots that will no doubt carry the series forward. (Edmonton Journal)

Chapman provides a fine balance between the minutiae of police work and the characters' complex personal lives. It's a story that is highly readable from beginning to end. I'm looking forward to Stonechild's next adventure. (Sanjosemercurynews.com)

What makes this mystery most interesting are the tightly knit details. Chapman never tips her hand as she presents readers with a wide-open field of suspects. For the majority of the novel, the list of potential culprits is lengthy, and the author skillfully deploys twists and decoys to misdirect us, while also dropping tiny clues to help make the final reveal seem perfectly logical. (Quill & Quire)

This novel is beautifully written, the plot is expertly crafted, and the characters are complex and well drawn. (Mysteriousbibliophile.blogspot.ca)

"Butterfly Kills" is another Stonechild and Rouleau mystery by Brenda Chapman whose impressive abilities in crafting memorable characters embedded in a complex mystery/suspense tale of unexpected twists and surprising turns results in a compellingly entertaining read from beginning to end. (Reviewersbookwatch.com)

By the final chapter, Chapman has established the grounds for further entries in the series. Readers of crime fiction, especially Canadian ones who find local settings and concerns often hard to find in their favourite genre should be pleased to hear it. (Reviewingtheevidence.com)

EXCELLENT MYSTERY SET IN CONTEMPORARY CANADA
By Julie H. Ferguson
Read as an ARC.
I'm a big fan of Brenda Chapman's Stonechild and Rouleau mystery series set in Ontario. This one centres in Kingston. I appreciate the characterization of the two protagonists — they both have a few demons and difficulties brought to their jobs from the past, as well as different strengths. To me they are "real" characters.
Chapman's books have excellent plots and sub-plots and tackle modern-day crime. Also the author deftly manages tension and pacing, ensure the reader can't put the book down.
And, no, I'm not going to reveal the story or its conclusion - that would a spoiler.
Highly recommended for mystery fans.

Canadian police series
By AMK
This is an exciting police thriller. Set in Canada, both Stonechild and Rouleau have a few personal issues to deal with as well as a murder case, a rape and a disappearance of a young woman. All seem random cases but as they investigate the murder it becomes tied to the missing person and eventually the rape victim. Well written, this is a series I'll look for the next book. The insight into Middle Eastern family culture and customs can be a little disconcerting.

Multi-layered Mystery
By Laura Hartman
When a college student is brutally murdered, her co-workers in the office of the campus confidential helpline are scrutinized as possible suspects. Each of them has issues, but all claim they are not guilty. One of them is a troublemaker, one is possibly her married lover and one is an ex-boyfriend. There is always the possibility that one of the callers may have a secret worth killing for to keep it from seeing the light of day.

Simultaneously, police investigator Jacques Rouleau learns of another crime scene. A young mother has been raped by her estranged husband. It is a coincidence or extremely bad luck that two major crimes are committed in Kingston, especially because they are unrelated. Or are they?

Soon the investigations heat up as another body turns up and an assault puts everyone on edge. Enter Kala Stonechild – Rouleau’s former partner. Rouleau convinces a reluctant Stonechild to stay in town long enough to help him investigate the attacks because his plate is overflowing with investigating these crimes and worry about his ailing father.

There is chemistry between Rouleau and Stonechild that could easily ignite if they fan the spark. They are reluctant to risk the work relationship on what could be, but both seem interested. Enter Rouleau’s ex-wife. The woman that turned his world upside down by having an affair, is now jealously and possessively trying to step back into the role she gave up so easily for another man.

This plot is intricate and involved. Chapman does a great job of blending story lines, adding twists and turns without losing sight of the characters and their roles. As a reader, I like having a bevy of bad guys and not so bad guys to pin the murder on. Chapman provides a wide variety to choose from.

This is a solid mystery with interesting characters that I liked, loved or downright hated. The inspectors, Rouleau and Stonechild, have depth and back stories that are sufficiently told in this second novel featuring them that allowed me to feel like I knew them.

Butterfly Kills was not a fast read for me. But I am not sure it is meant to be. I had to slow down and pay attention to the clues and characters to really enjoy the rhythm of the story. I’m glad I did.

I would not characterize this as a book, but rather the first chapter in a serialized novel. The writer shows potential, but fails to demonstrate that the hero and heroine are something more than the hapless losers that they seem to be. There is no real character growth, neither of them seem to to develop as people nor do they learn to overcome their flaws. They certainly have more than enough room to do so in the continuations of this novel, but I think the writer would be well served by setting down and drawing out what he intends to be the novel's over-arching structure and character development arcs before releasing the next installment.

This is a really good book. I found myself always trying to figure out where the story was going, which kept me interested and wanting to read more. I'm hoping there is a continuation of this book because I would love to get more involved in the story.

Missed potential
By grrltechie
The story was interesting but there were so many spelling and grammar errors that it was distracting and there were places where the characters acted like children. One scene that stands out was where the two main characters notice another person in the room with them who was asleep and instead of responding as a normal human, speaking to them, possibly shaking them awake, he calls her a very old lady (wtf,so rude!) and then shouts at her. That's another thing, this guy yells a lot. If that is supposed to be his character, it wasn't well developed enough for us to realize that. Or maybe I just missed it.

It's a shame, the story had a lot of potential but the characters kept getting in the way and the book could have really used a proofreader.

Dirty Secrets: Interview with a Billionaire (The Blankenships Book 1), by Evelyn Glass

Alexander Blankenship is everything that is wrong about Wall Street, and Zoey Gardener just landed an interview with him.
Twenty-four year old Zoey Gardener just hit the biggest break of her life. On the verge of starting yet another job hunt as a journalist, she somehow manages to find herself conducting an exclusive interview with Alexander Blankenship—better known as the wildest playboy of Wall Street and a perfect example of everything wrong with the 1%.

And though he’s every bit the person the world paints him out to be, there’s something about Alexander that draws Zoey in. Something that commands it.

Zoey is about to be pulled into Alexander’s world—a world where deals are unspoken and understanding is implicit, where the lines between meeting room and bedroom are blurred, where dark sensual pleasures find an avenue of release, and where profit comes above all else…

From bestselling author Evelyn Glass comes an epic tale of ruthless billionaires, steaming hot romance, and a young woman attempting to navigate it all.

EXCERPT

Alex had planned to spend the afternoon going through more of his father’s files, trying to decipher the old man’s shorthand in his planner, or possibly trying yet again to break into his email. IT assured him that they could easily reset the password of any one operating on the server, but somehow, every time they tried, the system redirected them. They were working on it. They swore.

He’d been shocked to see the beautiful distraction from the previous night—Zoey—walking into his office like everything he needed to push the troubles of his father’s passing out of his mind and refocus on the tasks at hand. He’d planned on giving her the interview she needed for her ridiculous rag, and then he’d meant to screw her until she screamed, send her on her way, and get back to work.

Only there was something about her. He’d swung to the Dom side of things his entire sexual life, and he’d never had any trouble finding women who wanted to sub for him. He loved the atmosphere at Chez Vous, and the way that no one seemed any more interested in learning about his life outside of the play space than he had there. But there had always been something so very compliant about the women he met there. Zoey had a fire in her eyes that said he was going to have to convince her to kneel, each and every time. That it would never be a given. It was a delicious sensation. He wanted to feel it again.

Page Turner at its best!
By Heather Edwards
Dirty Secrets is filled with tons of emotions and events. Evelyn Glass did a great job keeping my attention and wanting to read more. Dirty Secrets is by no means boring. Very fun to read, you get lost into a whole other world. Zoey aged 24 meets a man named Alexander and gets lost into his world. Alexander is going through his fathers files at the beginning and when Zoey is brought in takes Alexander away from all that. If you are into romance novels this is for you. Between love, hate, and seduction this has it all. Very well written, easy to read, and a page turner at best. Loved it and cant wait to read more by Evelyn Glass

An easy read and quick page turner.
By Travis Ingram
A young journalist is about to catch her debut break by interviewing one of the largest Wallstreet bad boys. He lives a dark and lavish life and as the journalist gets closer she can't help but be consumed by the lifestyle. An easy read that leaves you wanting more and guessing what the next book in the series will hold within its pages.

Jefferson Grammaticus and his business partners, Jocelyn and Jerome Freeman, had spent two years on the extensive renovation of a two hundred year old building, set in expansive grounds, with the River Darle as it's northern-most boundary. The building work was now finished, the decoration and furnishings were in their appointed rooms, rich drapes adorned the windows, and French crystal chandeliers were being hung. The opening weekend—which included a murder/mystery dinner (in fancy dress)—had been advertised, and bookings taken. Then finally, after all the work and graft, the decisions, the purchases, the planning and last minute hitches, all was ready. Grammaticus booked in his first guests with great optimism, believing that 'The Manse' had a sparkling future ahead of it. He was soon to be disabused of this, however, when two people were killed and another lay gravely ill! And it had all happened on the night of the murder/mystery dinner, except that the bodies were actually dead! Into this fearful and mistrustful mixture of guests and staff, D I Harry Falconer and D S Davey Carmichael arrive, to try to make sense of how the tragedies had occurred and who was responsible for them.

This is a new release of a previously published edition.

Slow start, but good finish
By T. Harper
Murder at the Manse starts out pretty slow, setting the scene and introducing a bunch of characters. I had a hard time trying to figure out who was who on the guest list, but it really didn't matter. Falconer and Carmichael certainly don't disappoint. I just love their relationship. In the end, this is a very good read. Frazer's writing is very readable which keeps me coming back.

"WOW. When is the next book coming out, because I am not quite sure my heart will make it that long! If you think you have it figured out...just stop right there because you are likely going to be wrong. Twist and turns, the obvious is not the obvious and the not obvious isn't either and the introduction of a great range of players makes this another series you will not want to put down!"

Will they find the killer?
By Matt C.
This was another fun book in the collection of Carolyn McCray and Ben Hopkin. This book takes Kyra's ( a Kent Harbinger protege') team from Hunters Inc. to Bangkok to track a serial killer who is killing tourists. The only issue is every direction they go seems to take them nowhere. Will they find the killer? You probably know the answer but will it be what you expect?

This book has a good plot and good character building my only issue is there is almost too much character building going on it sometimes is hard to follow who is who. Overall this is the good fun read you expect from a McCrayand Hopkin book. I am excited to see where Ben and her take the team!!

Please note I received an advanced copy of this book to review. In no way did it influence my review!

Great Look Into the Seedly Underworld of Bangkok
By DoeEyes67
I know that I sound like a broken record when I say this, but the thing I love most about McCray & Hopkin stories is that they ALWAYS get me with the big reveal of the "baddie", and Bangkok Butcher is no exception. I loved this story. I am loving Kyra as she continues to grow as a leader, as well as getting to know the other players in Hunters Inc. as well. I also love how McCray & Hopkin paint such an awesome picture of the action that is taking place, you feel like you're with Kyra, Diego, Jacques, and other members of the team. I highly recommend this, and the entire Hunters Inc. series.

I was given an advanced copy of Bangkok Butcher, but it in no way influenced my review.

All That Glitters: A Jake & Laura Mystery, by Michael Murphy

In Michael Murphy’s rollicking new Jake & Laura mystery, the hard-boiled writer and the aspiring movie star head for sun-drenched Los Angeles, where a cold-blooded murderer lurks behind the scenes.

Just arrived from New York, Broadway actress Laura Wilson is slated to star in Hollywood’s newest screwball comedy. At her side, of course, is Jake Donovan, under pressure to write his next mystery novel. But peace and quiet are not to be had when an all-too-real murder plot intrudes: After a glitzy party, the son of a studio honcho is discovered dead from a gunshot wound. And since Jake exchanged words with the hothead just hours before his death, the bestselling author becomes the LAPD’s prime suspect.

In 1930s Tinseltown, anything goes. Proving his innocence won’t be easy in a town where sex, seduction, and naked power run rampant. With gossip columnist Louella Parsons dead-set on publicizing the charges against him, Jake has no choice but to do what everyone else does in the City of Angels: act like someone else. Blackie Doyle, the tough-talking, fist-swinging, womanizing hero from Jake’s novels wouldn’t pull any punches until he exposed the real killer—nor will Jake, to keep the role of a lifetime from being his last.

Praise for All That Glitters

“Jake and Laura really do remind me of Dashiell Hammett’s Nick and Nora Charles. They are fun, witty, and charming, and the novel is filled with the same kind of 1930s Hollywood glamour that made the film of The Thin Man such a classic.”—Popcorn Reads

“Art imitates life imitates art imitates life, with just as terrific results as the first book in this series, The Yankee Club.”—Reading Reality

“Michael Murphy has pulled off another successful novel with interesting characters, a riveting story, and a great setting that transports us back to Prohibition-era Hollywood.”—The Book Binder’s Daughter

“Murphy has a good thing going with this great new historical mystery series. . . . [They’re] fast-paced and a good look back at an interesting era and the people in it.”—Joyfully Retired

“Highly entertaining . . . Mystery lovers, noir fans and lovers of classic movies will really go for this book.”—The Reader’s Hollow

“I couldn’t put this book down. It grabbed me right from the start and I was quickly invested in the characters and their lives. . . . A great read and wonderfully fun characters.”—Mystery Playground

“You know how it is when you have the perfect cup? The aroma is great, the perfect balance in taste, it’s hot enough to warm your soul, but not too hot to burn your tongue, and the mug fits perfectly in your hands. All the senses are engaged and you forget the world around you. That is this book to a mystery reader- it has the impeccable balance.”—Lilac Reviews

Murphy strikes again
By Melinda
Michael Murphy strikes again with Jake and Laura as they stumble into adventure requiring their gumshoe tactics and expertise, true partners in crime and love.

All That Glitters takes the reader to Hollywood during The Golden Era with plenty of excitement, silver screen celebrities referenced and included in the narrative, loads of historical references. Murphy has a talent for plunging the reader into the era with ease. The motley characters, the dialog all transport you to the 1930’s, the vibe clearly realized.

Jake and Laura are such vibrant protagonists. Their chemistry, quick banter bulleted with sarcasm charm the reader. Almost animated as they spring to life from the pages. Shenanigans, their passionate bickering all add excitement as they untangle the mystery of ‘who dunnit’ ferreting out the killer.

The fast pace keeps your attention, smart narrative keeps you guessing until the very end as the dynamic duo unearth secrets and scandalous behavior while seeking the culprit.

Great frolicsome protagonists paired with a riveting narrative create a fun and adventurous mystery, exciting until the last page is turned. Once again Murphy leaves me craving more from a favorite couple, anxiously awaiting the next in this fun noir series.

By Leslie Truex
4.5 stas: I'm a huge fan of The Thin Man and old movies, so All That Glitters is right up my alley. The book is the second in a series featuring ex-gumshoe turned mystery writer Jake and his actress girlfriend Laura. They've left NY for Hollywood where Laura has been offered a role in a movie. Although Jake tries to stay out of Laura's way and limelight, he ends up in the middle of mystery and murder. The story is fun, especially if you enjoy The Thin Man and William Powell. Sometimes Laura is difficult to like and I wondered why Jake put up with it. But she'd eventually come around and they'd work things out. The book also shares some Hollywood history that many might not know about. Specifically pre- and post-code that regulated (censored) movies. Prior to the code, movies were much more risque...believe it or not. All That Glitters takes place right as movie companies are having to comply with the new code. All in all it's a fun read and true who-dunnit.

Excellent & Charming

You know how it is when you have the perfect cup? The aroma is great, the perfect balance in taste, it’s hot enough to warm your soul, but not too hot to burn your tongue and the mug fits perfectly in your hands. All the senses are engaged and you forget the world around you. That is this book to a mystery reader- it has the impeccable balance.
The setting and characters in this book were just fabulous. Picture the 1930’s in Los Angeles where you are bumping into the likes of William Powell and Carole Lombard. Folks are talking about Dashiell Hammett and who will get the role in The Thin Man. The pace was just right. The author smartly gave you the foundation information you would need for the era but put you into the action and pickle quickly without pages and pages of set up information. This is the second book with these characters, but can be read and enjoyed just fine if you haven’t had a chance to read The Yankee Club.
The chemistry between Jake and Laura is there. They are both smart and at the same time vulnerable in certain areas. Jake is a mystery writer and a former Pinkerton agent. This adds to the believability of having the skills to investigate. The idea that there would be greed, politics, gossip and romantic entanglements in the movie making business was perfectly understandable. All the ingredients for a murder are before the reader.
I think younger readers unfamiliar with actors and actresses of that time might miss a few of the references. Someone old enough to have seen a few of these black and white movies with fantastic gowns and charming ladies, gentlemen and/or scoundrels will smile a little from pleasant memories.
I was provided a free copy of the book to read and write an honest review.

After going up against a man who believed he was the Devil, himself, Leah Tallent and Gareth Lowery are exhausted. Now they are about to embark on the most terrifying journey imaginable...a trip to meet Leah’s parents.

When Leah arrives where the ‘home fires burn,’ her sarcasm burns even brighter, while Gareth Lowery—the handsome adventurer—uses his charm to sway the ‘odd’ Tallent clan. But when a frightening call from Gareth’s sister arrives telling him that her love has disappeared, the daring duo is soon running away from one horrific situation directly into another.

A new puzzle from the past has come to life. Following clues left behind, the courageous couple become embedded in a world filled with liars, killers and greed. And when the riddle of a famous ‘Bard’ is solved, a strange woman appears who has far more in common with Leah than she can possibly imagine.

The heart-stopping suspense of this new quest takes them from Coptic Cairo to the magical world of Petra, in search of a cave deep underground that once housed a true ‘Illuminator.’ Yet again, they must find the answers and stay one step ahead of true villains who are determined to make sure that—this time—Tallent & Lowery do not survive.

Hooked on Tallent & Lowery!
By Karyn Pearson
Disclaimer: I was given a complimentary copy from Page Turner Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed are my own and I was neither compensated nor required to write a positive review.

In all honesty, when I signed up to do this review, I had no idea what I was in for, let alone what to expect. I hadn’t read the blurb or this book’s predecessor. I figured, “I’ve got free time. What the hell! Let’s review a book!” And let me just say that once I started, I was completely blown away.

Lignor creates a rich universe that’s part Indiana Jones, part The Da Vinci Code and weaves it together in a tale of mystery, lost relics, secret societies, conspiracy theories, and the history of iconic figures such as Shakespeare, Sir Francis Bacon, dating all the way back to the foundations of Christianity itself.

Having jumped in on Book 2 of this series, I had worried I would be lost and confused. But I quickly discovered that was not the case. Lignor masterfully avoids this pitfall and she uses just enough description to tell the reader what happened without launching into a complete recap of events in the previous book. I never felt lost or confused while reading, but I certainly desired to know the full story of Leah and Gareth’s previous adventure.

Along with a strong narrative, Lignor treats her work’s characters with great care. I bonded almost immediately with the four main characters–Leah, Gareth, Kathryn, and Emmanuel. Each of these four had unique and very likable personalities and they were all easy to relate to. Even the minor characters shine and clearly have their own back stories that are just as colorful as they are, from sweet little Mary to cryptic Anippe.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this installment in the Tallent & Lowery series and I will most definitely be going back to pick up a copy of 13 so that I can start this series off from the beginning. I know that I’ll be following the rest of this seven-book series, as I look forward to reading about whatever chaotic situation Leah and Gareth find themselves in next.

a complete rush
By Jonel
Lignor jumps right into the action from the very beginning of the story. She mixes religion, myth, symbolism, and the everyday together to create a suspenseful yet intelligent storyline. I appreciate how Lignor gives background information on the previous novel in the series and on the characters’ histories. There is enough for someone to start reading the series here but not so much recap as to bore those who have read it.

Lignor employs extremely visual and captivating descriptions that leave an imprint in your mind. The symbolism worked into this novel is also astounding. It not only creates a picture for the audience but also helps to further the storyline, giving you hints and insights into the future.

I really appreciate the strong female lead in this story. She doesn’t take a backseat to others but at the same time doesn’t feel the need to do everything on her own. The two lead characters actually play the perfect counterpoint to each other. They complement and balance each other. Based on their interactions with each other you can really see how and why they fit together so well.

Lignor continues to develop the characters that we met in the first Tallent & Lowery novel. We now know them on multiple levels. She also introduces new characters who are quite well developed. The realistic interactions between the characters not only serve to add an extra element of realism to this story but also to give you more insight into the various characters and their relationships with each other. It leads to a very well rounded cast. I love the wide variety of character types that you come across in this novel. No two are alike yet you can see the intricacies of their relationships.

Overall, this novel is intellectually stimulating and creatively brilliant. I would easily recommend it to all.

Please note that I received this novel free of charge from the author in exchange for an honest review.

fascinating, well-paced and action-packed.
By kimbacaffeinate
I ended up liking Leah Tallent even more in Sapphire Storm. This library curator is a wealth of knowledge, and her ability to link things is uncanny. Of course her love of all things coffee makes her my new bestie. Gareth is strong, and trying to keep both woman safe, tempering his jealousy and finding Emmanuel is quite the challenge. He is a charmer, and I enjoy how he and Leah complement each other. New and secondary characters along with villains help propel the plot and offer key clues keeping the tempo fast paced.

If you are a fan of quests, conspiracy theories, Greek mythology, Shakespeare, and the royal court Sapphire Storm will quickly draw you in. Lignor skillfully weaves famous historical figures, Christianity, and secret societies into this fast-paced quest keeping you riveted. She lends enough historically arcuate facts to make the story feel authentic. I love how well researched Lignor's books are, and found myself using Google to find characters, places and events. She has this gift for making the reader inquisitive! There are twists, turns and danger at every corner, with just enough humor and romantic moments in between to give the reader a chance to catch their breath. We see character growth and get to know the characters more added another layer to them. New characters and the quest made this an exciting addition to the series. The ending has a cliffhanger, but sets us up perfectly for the next book.
If you love mystery and quests Sapphire Storm provides an excellent adventure. The adventures of Tallent & Lowery are ones I will continue to enjoy and I am looking forward to their next quest. Copy received from author in exchange for an unbiased review and originally published at caffeinated book reviewer.
