Charles Stone is pretty sure he's dead. He has bullet holes in his chest, and there's a ghostly dog that seems to be his new companion. Unable to interact with the world of the living other than watching and listening, he and the dog-whom he names Rose-have nothing to do and all the time in the world to do it. When Charles and Rose try to unravel the circumstances of Charles's death, they uncover a criminal who is raking in millions of dollars by cruelly exploiting, and sometimes killing, his victims. But what difference can a ghost make? And what does the dog have to do with all of this?

A Gorgeous Mystery
By Leslie Hall
Beautifully written (“If you, the living, are the sparrows then the dead are the shadows of your wings”; “My father died all at once, like a flower blooming in reverse”), heartbreaking (What is more heartbreaking than to die in a state of alienation, unaware of yourself, disconnected from others?) and witty (“In case you wondered, yes. When you’re dead, you can attend your own funeral”), with deep dark edges that still somehow let in the light, which is in turn harsh and silvery and, as in one of the quotations, “bonewhite…like death, behind all things." I love this story— of redemption, of love, of connection— and I love this book.

Things I love about Dead Is Better:
The quotations that begin each chapter. Rushing is tempting; this is a fun read, you want to keep turning the pages. But the vast range of quotations—from Neil Gaiman to Stephen King to Sylvia Plath to Socrates to Nabakov to Mozart to James Joyce—contributes so much. I want to say the quotations lend gravitas, but that’s not quite right and sounds boring when these are anything but; really they add a profundity that creates a delicate sense of the ethereal.
The lists (living people at the funeral; the cumulative list of things Charles learns after he dies; his ex-wives’ boyfriends, including “the chiropractor/nutritionist who worked on the Kardashians”; more of what Charles learns after death)
The sense of place—L.A. is described so specifically, so perfectly, that even if you’ve never been there, you know something about it after reading this book.
The delicate and refined sensibility. There’s a keen aliveness to beauty and pain and all of the details that swirl around and are woven into human experience.
The establishment and deft maintenance of a different plane of existence (“There is no up or down. No here here. No molten center or electromagnetic north to guide or anchor me or the dog….”). We’re aware that Charles and Rose exist in a realm with its own rules, limitations, and sensations: “Death has a physics all its own,” “We’re neither ravenous nor sated—just completely emptied of need”)
The subtle nudges to consider the bigger picture: “Does the arc of history really bend toward justice?"
The allusions! Charlie and Rose “wander lonely as clouds."
If you love dogs, you will love this book.
If you love beautiful writing, you will love this book.
If you love sharp wit, you will love this book.
If you love reading the work of a surefooted, confident, beyond competent writer whom you soon learn you may trust absolutely to lead you into and through some different realm, you will love this book.

Charlie Stone and Rose are a winning pair.
By Cathy G. Cole
Jo Perry's novel got under my skin and just wouldn't turn me loose. Dead Is Better (the title is a partial quote from Stephen King's Pet Sematary) unfolds in short bursts, like someone who's found an old-fashioned projector, screen, and a carousel of slides and is clicking his way through them. It's a pace that takes a few chapters before it becomes comfortable, but it does.

Charlie continually describes himself as unlikable, but readers soon learn that his actions prove that to be a lie. It's this unveiling of Charlie's true character that makes us want to find out why someone would want to kill him. And Rose? Just as we learn about Charlie, we can see that she's more than just a dog-- but neither is she a canine angel nor Lassie.

Something I seldom mention but feel I have to do so here is the appalling lack of proofreading in this Kindle version of what is an imaginative and well-written book. Many misspelled words and grammatical errors kept jerking me back to reality when I wanted to stay immersed in Perry's story.

The paranormal angle was interesting and well-done. Do Charlie and Rose bring the killer to justice? I will spill the beans and admit that they do, but what I won't tell you is how they do it. Very nice-- and I'm looking forward to reading another book featuring these two characters (even if one of them cannot speak)!

"Dead is Better" is the Best
By T in LA
I love this book! It's a wonderful combination of mystery, humor, and contemplation of death that will keep you turning the pages until you come to the end, wishing there was more. The main character, Charles, is someone we can all relate to. And anyone who's ever loved a dog will fall in love with Rose. I had a great time reading it, and you will, too.
