The Girl on the Pier, by Paul Tomkins

Abandoned time and again by those he holds dear, Patrick Clement is forging a reputation as a forensic sculptor, helping to identify the unclaimed missing. But he can’t leave behind a remarkable summer night in 1993, spent alone on Brighton’s derelict West Pier with Black, a beautiful photography student. Patrick is haunted by the fact that no sooner did he get to know her than she disappeared from his life...

Who is this girl? And where is Black, the one who got away?

Decades on, while at work, Patrick is tasked with reconstructing the skull of an unidentified girl found on the pier in the 1970s – the pier he still thinks about. A crime he recalls from childhood, when his family life was in turmoil, Patrick works to discover the truth behind what has happened.

Set in Brighton, The Girl on the Pier spans several decades, from the seventies to the present day. Inspired by literary novelists such as Ian McEwan, Anne Tyler and John Updike, Paul uses vivid images to make the reader feel as though they are right there in the story. The Girl on the Pier will appeal to lovers of psychological thrillers and suspense novels.

Review
'A terrific novel. Beautiful prose, gripping story.' -- Chris Rowland 'The Girl on the Pier is a beautifully written, thought-provoking psychological thriller. A brilliant idea for a story.' -- Araminta Hall 'Is this really the author's first novel?! It is extremely well-done either way, but is even more impressive if this is the case... This is one of those books that you simply to do want to end as you find yourself becoming more and more invested in the story and the characters. This book was remarkable, and this author is one that I will be keeping any eye on for any future novels!' -- Reading Rachel 'Reflective, atmospheric, and written in gorgeous prose... It's common to liken books to others, but I can't do that with this novel because it isn't quite like anything I've read before. And this is a very good thing... If you enjoy well written stories which require a little thought and leave you thinking, then you should enjoy The Girl on the Pier.' -- Laura Wilkinson blog 'I was absolutely swimming in heavenly prose. A great story which I predict will be found on bestseller lists in the near future' -- 52 Book Minimum 'Excellent character driven suspenseful tale that will leave your mouth hanging open' -- Bloggabook

Gorgeous prose, average mystery.
By Lynx
After reading rave reviews about this being a fantastic, gripping, psychological thriller I was really looking forward to devouring this one. Unfortunately I'm in the minority who found it to be a beautiful mess. The story revolves around Patrick, a Forensic Artist who sculpts to life the skulls of those long deceased. Patrick is given the assignment of sculpting "Marina", a cold case body found on the pier decades earlier which opens a floodgate of memories for him, of the women who he has loved and lost in his life. As Patrick gets closer to sculpting Marina's true likeness he realizes it's time to face those memories head on no matter what the consequences.

Written with such gorgeous prose, there is no question that Paul Tomkins is a natural writer, however he has so many random storylines going that the structure drove me mad. Playing leapfrog chapter to chapter is fine once you get an idea of how many storylines you are expected to follow but not only does it make it difficult to sort out what is important, it also had me less interested in some chapters and more in others. I'd be totally engrossed in the chapters about the night on the pier and the beautiful detail he puts in about forensic sculpting and then have to plow through those (repeated) chapters on his childhood. Because of this, it was nearly impossible to feel any sort of tension that one should with such a mystery. When a book this short feels this padded you need an editor to sit you down and turn it into a fantastic novella. It wasn't until Part 2 of the book started that I felt any sort of suspense and beginning at 80% through I had already guessed the outcome by this point.

I'll be checking out his next one.

The book is great value and kept me reading
By Lee Hammond
As a first novel by this author, it builds the tension very well. There is a set of seemingly parallel stories, that turn out to be flashbacks to different eras; and this works very well. Some of the descriptions and metaphors are a little wooden but the details and thoughts of the insecure characters take me back to my adolescent years. The book is great value and kept me reading! Beware of others 'reviewing' the paperback version...before it has even shipped [November 2014].

A skeleton in need of a spine
By Kate Vane
The Girl on the Pier has an intriguing premise. Patrick fell in love with a woman known as Black on the pier in Brighton twenty years ago. The next day she disappeared from his life. Now he works as a forensic artist and is reconstructing a face from the skull of a dead woman who died near the pier some thirty years ago. Patrick knows it isn't the same woman - the dates clearly don't tie up - but the experience feeds his obsession with Black.

From this promising start, however, things go astray. We learn, in no particular order, about Patrick's marriage, his childhood, his training as a forensic artist, even his attitude to flying, and there are some lengthy descriptive passages - his description of his childhood home reads like a landlord's inventory. It's hard to keep a sense of what's important and what the story is really about.

There is some great writing at times. The description of the skeletal remains of the West Pier, the accounts of the physical and psychological processes he goes through when he reconstructs a face from a skull, the story of his mother. There are one or two intriguing plot twists. At others, the prose is a little clunky and the dialogue wooden, particularly from the female characters.

The difficulty is that the key people in Patrick's life are absent women - Black, the missing woman, his mother. This can make it hard to dramatise. There needs to be more momentum in Patrick's narration.

Patrick's relationship with David, the retired police officer investigating the cold case of the dead woman, is interesting and could have been more central to the story. There is a sense that they are both allies and adversaries. David obsession with her is a nice counterpoint to Patrick's with Black.

There are some interesting ideas and good writing in this book but for me it needs a ruthless editor and a stronger narrative spine.

A. C. Doyle Springs to Life Once More

I. A. Watson certainly is the progeny of the master. Brilliant in his approach, subtle in his technique, he allows the characters and their settings to come to full bloom. To have found this writer is to have found ACD reincarnated...but better because he treats ACD, SH and JW as the crown jewels they are.

When you're hungry for some Holmes
By Joe Foster
These are some of the best pastiches I've read. There is very little "off," anachronistic or jarring. A couple of the mysteries are a bit tedious but the rest of them are engaging, and a couple are brilliant.

This is one of the better pastiches (all short stories) available. The feeling, dialog, plots - all are faithful to the canon and are exquisite in themselves.

A Gorgeous Mystery
By Leslie Hall
Beautifully written (“If you, the living, are the sparrows then the dead are the shadows of your wings”; “My father died all at once, like a flower blooming in reverse”), heartbreaking (What is more heartbreaking than to die in a state of alienation, unaware of yourself, disconnected from others?) and witty (“In case you wondered, yes. When you’re dead, you can attend your own funeral”), with deep dark edges that still somehow let in the light, which is in turn harsh and silvery and, as in one of the quotations, “bonewhite…like death, behind all things." I love this story— of redemption, of love, of connection— and I love this book.

Things I love about Dead Is Better:
The quotations that begin each chapter. Rushing is tempting; this is a fun read, you want to keep turning the pages. But the vast range of quotations—from Neil Gaiman to Stephen King to Sylvia Plath to Socrates to Nabakov to Mozart to James Joyce—contributes so much. I want to say the quotations lend gravitas, but that’s not quite right and sounds boring when these are anything but; really they add a profundity that creates a delicate sense of the ethereal.
The lists (living people at the funeral; the cumulative list of things Charles learns after he dies; his ex-wives’ boyfriends, including “the chiropractor/nutritionist who worked on the Kardashians”; more of what Charles learns after death)
The sense of place—L.A. is described so specifically, so perfectly, that even if you’ve never been there, you know something about it after reading this book.
The delicate and refined sensibility. There’s a keen aliveness to beauty and pain and all of the details that swirl around and are woven into human experience.
The establishment and deft maintenance of a different plane of existence (“There is no up or down. No here here. No molten center or electromagnetic north to guide or anchor me or the dog….”). We’re aware that Charles and Rose exist in a realm with its own rules, limitations, and sensations: “Death has a physics all its own,” “We’re neither ravenous nor sated—just completely emptied of need”)
The subtle nudges to consider the bigger picture: “Does the arc of history really bend toward justice?"
The allusions! Charlie and Rose “wander lonely as clouds."
If you love dogs, you will love this book.
If you love beautiful writing, you will love this book.
If you love sharp wit, you will love this book.
If you love reading the work of a surefooted, confident, beyond competent writer whom you soon learn you may trust absolutely to lead you into and through some different realm, you will love this book.

Charlie Stone and Rose are a winning pair.
By Cathy G. Cole
Jo Perry's novel got under my skin and just wouldn't turn me loose. Dead Is Better (the title is a partial quote from Stephen King's Pet Sematary) unfolds in short bursts, like someone who's found an old-fashioned projector, screen, and a carousel of slides and is clicking his way through them. It's a pace that takes a few chapters before it becomes comfortable, but it does.

Charlie continually describes himself as unlikable, but readers soon learn that his actions prove that to be a lie. It's this unveiling of Charlie's true character that makes us want to find out why someone would want to kill him. And Rose? Just as we learn about Charlie, we can see that she's more than just a dog-- but neither is she a canine angel nor Lassie.

Something I seldom mention but feel I have to do so here is the appalling lack of proofreading in this Kindle version of what is an imaginative and well-written book. Many misspelled words and grammatical errors kept jerking me back to reality when I wanted to stay immersed in Perry's story.

The paranormal angle was interesting and well-done. Do Charlie and Rose bring the killer to justice? I will spill the beans and admit that they do, but what I won't tell you is how they do it. Very nice-- and I'm looking forward to reading another book featuring these two characters (even if one of them cannot speak)!

"Dead is Better" is the Best
By T in LA
I love this book! It's a wonderful combination of mystery, humor, and contemplation of death that will keep you turning the pages until you come to the end, wishing there was more. The main character, Charles, is someone we can all relate to. And anyone who's ever loved a dog will fall in love with Rose. I had a great time reading it, and you will, too.

I have read all of the Ben Hope novels and I can say they keep getting better and better. Ben Hope is such a wonderful character with emotion, feeling, sadness, a man who believes in true justice and retribution. Scott Mariani has one of the best characters in fiction. Ben Hope is a reluctant hero, but a hero none the less. If you have not read the Ben Hope series you don't know what you are missing.

Anotjher great book by Scott Mariana
By J. J. Crabtree
Once again Scott has written a superb thriller. His building of the characters is very good and the action sequences are extremely well written.

The story line is fast flowing and there are very few slow spots in the novel - I cannot wait until the next one.

Working as a barmaid at the Silver Star Saloon in Austin put Sidney Parker's eidetic memory to good use. She could easily remember the drink orders for this table of twelve. With thumbs hooked in the belt loops of her thigh-high jean skirt, she faced the group of well-dressed young people who were still wearing their security badges from the state capitol.

"What'll it be?" she asked.

They could have answered in one voice: beer. But the Silver Star was a designer brewery with products ranging from Amber Angel to Zoo Brew. Sidney mentally recorded the order and gave a nod.

"Wait a minute," said a woman with platinum blond curls. "Change mine from Chantilly Lace to Raspberry Rocket."

"Got it."

"Are you sure? You didn't write anything down."

Sidney inhaled a breath and repeated their order. "We're starting over here with two Pale Tigers, then a Blue Moon, a Lucky Ducky, Thor's Hammer Lite…" She continued around the table and ended with the redhead. "And you'll be having the Raspberry Rocket."

The gang applauded, and she swept a bow before heading to the huge central bar to fill her tray.

Keeping her brain occupied wasn't the greatest benefit of Sidney's part-time night job. The country-and-western sound track, the conversation and general clamor at the Silver Star provided her with a much-needed distraction during those lonely hours before dawn when tears swamped her pillow.

Behind the bar, Celia Marshall ducked down so the customers couldn't see her adjust the red gingham uniform shirt to better contain her cleavage. "I swear, I'm about to have a wardrobe malfunction."

"That's a problem I don't have." Sidney never needed to worry about her cup running over; her breasts were small and well behaved.

"I'd trade my chest in a minute for your mile-long legs."

"No deal." Sidney liked being tall. In her cowgirl boots, she was almost six feet. She gave her friend a closer look and noticed the puffiness around her eyes. "Something wrong?"

"Ray and I are fussing at each other again." Celia shook her head and frowned. "I always feel like a class-A whiner talking to you about man problems. Nobody has worse luck than you."

"It's not a contest." Sidney tucked a strand of her long, straight blond hair behind her ear. "And there's nothing I can do about my situation. You have options."

"Any word on Nick?"

"Not yet." She couldn't bear to think of Nick Corelli, her fiance. The mere mention of his name conjured up a mental image of a tall, handsome marine with thick black hair and deep-set eyes the color of fine cognac. Her perfect memory filled in all the blanks as she recalled his wide grin, high cheekbones and strong jawline.

If she allowed herself to think about him, she'd be sobbing in a minute. So she pushed his image aside and asked, "What's up with you and Ray?"

"It's all about his stupid hunting plans."

Sidney listened while she loaded her tray. It was going to take a couple of trips to serve her big table, and the domestic drama of Celia and Ray gave her something else to think about. They were both good people, understandable people with normal relationship issues. Not like her and Nick.

As she stood behind the bar, she spotted two men with impeccable posture and serious expressions enter the saloon. They weren't in uniform, but they might as well have been marching shoulder to shoulder, wearing their marine dress blues.

She set her tray on the bar. "Celia, you'll have to take over for me."

After a quick explanation to the shift manager, she fell into step between the two marines. She knew the drill. They were here to escort her to an interview with a CIA agent or someone high up in Marine Intelligence. She'd taken part in sixteen of these interrogations during the past six months after her fiance went missing in a South American dictatorship. She always hoped that her marine escorts would be bringing good news.

They never did.

In a dull beige room at the local CIA field offices, Sidney paced back and forth behind the table. The heels of her boots clunked on the tile floor. In her barmaid uniform with the short denim skirt and gingham top, she felt a little ridiculous but not intimidated.

The first time she'd been sequestered in a room like this, her anxiety level was off the charts. The shock of possibly losing Nick had been staggering, and she'd been desperate for information. She'd begged, wept and pleaded.

The only facts she'd been able to pry from the case officer, CIA Special Agent Sean Phillips, were that her fiance was MIA in the South American country of Ti-quanna, his body hadn't been found and he was probably being held by the rebels. There had been no ransom demands.

That was in early May, six months and four days ago. Nothing much had changed in the details she'd been given, but her attitude had transformed. When she first came here, she was a nervous kitty cat. Now, a lioness.

She was half a tick away from going to Tiquanna herself, marching into the palace compound of dictator Tomas Hurtado and demanding an army to storm the rebel camps. She'd met Hurtado three years ago when he consulted with the oil company she worked for in the engineering department. Along with her boss at Texas Triton, she had actually traveled to the small country that was intent on developing its natural resources.

Sometimes, she wondered if that trip was the reason Nick had been selected for the assignment. When he told her that his platoon was being sent to Tiquanna, she'd given him all the inside information on Hurtado and his stunning wife, Elena.

The door opened and Special Agent Phillips entered. Sidney had heard that CIA agents liked to look anonymous so they could fade into crowds. If true, that meant Phillips was a CIA superstar. He was the most average-looking guy she'd ever met. With his thinning brown hair, brown eyes and average build, he was as plain as a prairie chicken.

"Why am I here?" she asked.

"Nice to see you, Sidney."

"Do you have news?"

A second person entered the room. Special Agent Victoria Hawthorne was higher in rank than Phillips, always dressed in black and as thin as a greyhound. Her dark hair was slicked back in a tight bun. She pulled out a chair on the opposite side of the table and sat. "Have a seat, Sidney."

"Am I being interrogated?" Still standing, she purposely kept her anger going. "This looks like an interrogation room with the closed door and the table and the big two-way mirror on the wall."

Special Agent Hawthorne scowled. Her thin lips pulled into an upside-down U. "You've been in this room before."

"And I've answered a million questions," she said. "I've been totally cooperative, and I think it's time I got an upgrade to a comfortable chair and, maybe, a room with windows."

Ignoring Sidney's demands, she asked, "Have you been in contact with anyone from Tiquanna?"

"Of course not. If somebody contacted me, I'd tell you immediately."

Hawthorne regarded Sidney through slitted eyes. "I have information if you're ready to hear it."

Hope flickered inside her like a pilot light that refused to be extinguished. "I'm ready. Tell me."

"On one condition. You must promise not to act on this information. Trust us to do our jobs without your interference. Is that clear?"

"Crystal."

"Hurtado and his wife will be in Austin next week along with several other South American leaders." This was big news. Sidney might have a chance to hear firsthand what was happening to Nick. "I want to see them."

"I can't promise," the thin-lipped agent said. "We'll do everything in our power to make that happen."

"Where will they be staying? How long will they be here?"

"You don't need to know." As she rose from her chair, Special Agent Hawthorne maintained steady eye contact. Her gaze was a warning. "If they agree to meet with you, we'll be in touch."

She turned on her heel and stalked from the room, leaving Sidney with a complicated tangle of anger, frustration and fear. She was afraid to expect too much, but she couldn't give up. It would be foolish to antagonize Hawthorne, but Sidney's anger demanded release.

Special Agent Phillips took Hawthorne's seat at the table, opened a folder and took out four photographs of men in camouflage fatigues. Three of them had beards. "Recognize anyone?"

"Do you think she'll let me talk to Hurtado?"

"I can't rightly say," he said in a Texan drawl.

Over the months, she and Phillips had developed a bit of rapport. He'd seen her at her worst when she broke down into hysterical tears, and she sensed that he was more sympathetic toward her than the other agents.

"I could negotiate with the rebels," she said. "I know it's against CIA policy, but I could—"

"C'mon now, Sidney girl." He poked at the photos.

"Let's do this thing."

She didn't want to be a good girl. A lioness would tear these photos to scraps and throw them in his face. She was too docile. Nothing was getting done.

But what choice did she have? Could she single-handedly take on the whole intelligence community?

She huffed a frustrated sigh before picking up the photos. This was part of their routine. Because of her memory, the CIA used her to identify men whom she might have met when she visited the country. Thus far, there had been only four familiar faces.

These unposed pictures had been taken in a forested setting. "It's hard to tell with the beards. I don't think I know them. Who are they?"

"Rebels," he said.

"When I was in Tiquanna, I never left the palace grounds. Why would you think I'd know rebels?" She didn't expect him to answer. "Is it because the palace guards are defecting? Are they joining the rebels?"

"Let's just say that Senor Hurtado ain't exactly winning any popularity contests."

And the CIA wanted to keep Hurtado on their side. Though the dictator had a terrible record on civil rights for his impoverished people, he supported US programs and happily accepted our aid. More important, he was working with neighboring countries to form an oil and natural gas distribution system functioning with US companies.

When Phillips pulled out several aerial photographs of the palace grounds, she groaned. "Not again," she said. "I've told you everything I could about the palace."

"Focus on this area." He pointed to a far corner in the walled compound.

She stared. "It looks like the wall is broken. Was it an explosion?"

"Yep."

A wave of guilt washed over her. In a similar tactic, Nick had disappeared. Six months and four days ago, there had been an explosion targeting the front gates. Two marines had been injured. The last anyone had seen of Nick was when he was trying to rescue them.

Before he left on this deployment, she'd told him not to be a hero, which was impossible advice for a marine. The man lived to protect others. His courage was as much a part of him as his arms and legs. Oh, God, she missed him so much. Without him, her life was empty.

Her fingers gripped the back of the chair. Her knees were weak. Though she wanted to be fierce, the weight of her sadness dragged her down. She sank into the chair.

"Please," she said, "you've got to tell me something about Nick. Those pictures you showed me are snapshots. They were taken from surveillance at the rebel camp, weren't they? Your people have infiltrated the camp."

The corner of his mouth twitched. For Phillips, that slight change of expression was more than she'd seen from him in weeks. Sensing a possible crack in the stone wall that kept information from her, she asked, "Do you have photos of Nick?"

"You know how this works, Sidney. I'm here to get intel from you."

"I just want to know if he's all right."

"There's reason to believe that your fiance is well."

The tiny flicker of hope burst into full flame. Something was different about Phillips. He knew something.

She asked, "Is Nick well enough to be rescued? What do you CIA people call it? Extracted. Can he be extracted?"

He pushed the aerial photo toward her. "We need to know about this part of the compound."

There was nothing to tell. She hadn't visited that part of the palace grounds, hadn't noticed anything about the far corner. For the first time, she wondered if it would serve her better to lie and build up the importance of that corner in the hope that she could get more information. But she wasn't about to play games with the CIA. They were on the same side. She needed to cooperate.

"I was never near that part of the grounds." She rose from her chair. "I've got nothing against you, Phillips. But I need more. Is there anybody else I should talk to? Anything else I can do?"

He leaned back in the chair and folded his arms across his chest. "If you left the room right now and went down the corridor to your left, I wouldn't stop you."

"Why? What does that mean?"

"You heard me."

She took the cue, not knowing what she'd find. Hoping for the best and fearing the worst, her fingers closed on the doorknob and she yanked the door open. Had it always been unlocked? She didn't know; she'd never tried it before.

After hours, there was no one else in the hallway. One side was all windows, and the other was closed doors. The route she'd always followed when escorted into the building was in the opposite direction. She'd never been this way before.

Moving fast before Phillips changed his mind, she rushed down the carpeted corridor. At the far end, a double doorway opened into a honeycomb of cubicles encircled by offices with glass walls. She heard voices to her left and turned.

In the farthest office, Special Agent Hawthorne stood behind a desk and spoke to four men. One stood apart from the others. His left hand was in the pocket of his gray suit jacket. He was tall with black hair and wide shoulders. Sidney couldn't see his face, but she knew him.

Okay
By Fallen3
I loved the first half of the book. I would give that half 5 stars. I would give the second half 2 stars. The hero is Nick. The heroine is Sidney.
The first half they are reunited after being away from each other for 6 months. She finds out he's alive, she's happy bla bla bla. The hero was a little stand offish, but that was okay because I thought, "Well he's letting it be known he loves her. There are just secrets, & they will have to work their way through them." I was really in to it.
Then everything became about Elena. I got very tired of hearing about how beautiful she was, how she wore her hair, the fancy clothes & jewelry. Her love life, her wants for her country.
In my opinion a book has room for only one heroine. I knew way more about Elena than I did Sidney. The book became more about her than it was about the "heroine". It was all about keeping her (Elena) safe & her needs. That kind of pissed me off. Especially since I loved the first half of the book.
The H & h had been apart for 6 months. There was never a conversation were the H questioned the h about how she had been during that time. They talked about the second job she got, her not painting the house, but that was it.
He wanted her safe but there was not enough talk about how much the H loved the h, and how much he missed her. I never felt the urgency from the hero that he was happy to be with Sidney again. The h wondered if the H had had any kind of feelings for Elena but you never hear the H have any concerns as to rather or not the h meet anyone. They had been away from each other for 6 months!!! She started working in a bar. Wouldn't most men at least wonder a little? Nope, still no questions.
So I'm disappointed that a book that started out great went down hill. Books should only have one hero & one heroine. And it should mainly be about them.

Mountain Retreat
By Coffee Time Romance & More
This story is filled with suspense and action that starts on page one and never quits. However, readers might be wondering where the romance went. Sidney and Nick are just a little too cold as a couple, something that cannot be redeemed by Sidney’s legendary powers of perfect recall.

Six months and four days ago U.S. Marine Nick Corelli disappeared inside the South American dictatorship, Tiquanna. In Austin his worried fiancée Sidney Parker keeps her eidetic memory from torturing her 24/7 by working nights at the Silver Star Saloon where she can recall specific orders from even 12 customers. Her day job at Texas Tritan led to her meeting Tiquanna dictator Tomas Hurtado three years ago.

During her ordeal, sixteen times CIA or military Intel have interrogated Sidney, but offer little info re her Nick. This time the CIA Special Agent-in-Charge Victoria Hawthorne informs her that Hurtado and his wife Elena will be in Austin next week. After his superior leaves, Special Agent Sean Phillips tells Sidney to leave the room and run to her left; there she finds Nick who looks at her from the eyes of a stranger. With Nick still undercover, Sidney is placed in a safe house. When that is breached Nick takes his beloved to a Mountain Retreat, but the persistent seemingly in the know enemy pursues them.

The key to this exhilarating romantic intrigue is the heroine who proves she has the right stuff under lethal conditions. Filled with action as the protagonists know the mission is staying alive especially since their unknown adversary anticipates their movements in this thrilling suspense.

Great read!

I really enjoyed reading this story about a fairly new vampire Damon Salvatore. His adventures in the South just a year after the war had ended. This is number one in a series that is one story. I look forward to reading the next installment.

Termination Dust (An Alaska Mystery Book 2), by Sue Henry

Alaska is a great place to visit… and a bad place to die

It is said that when the first snow of early winter—the "termination dust"—starts to fall, it's time for visitors to leave Alaska's wonders behind.

For some, it's already too late.

Jim Hampton's Yukon vacation takes a turn for the worse when he discovers a prospector's diary from the 1800s. And it dies when the rugged outdoorsman is arrested for the gruesome slaying of a controversial ex-Senator. But Alex Jensen isn't convinced of Hampton's guilt. And the dedicated state trooper is ready to track the bitter truth through the treacherous snows of the Yukon wilderness—and in the pages of a mysterious, hundred-year-old journal, which describes crimes remarkably similar... and deadly.

From Publishers Weekly
Overplotted and tamer than Henry's award-winning Murder on the Iditarod Trail, this sequel takes its title from the Alaska Gold Rush, when "termination dust" meant the first snowfall of the season, signaling the end of the year's prospecting. Alaska state trooper Alex Jensen is in Canada working with Royal Canadian Mounted Police Inspector Charles "Del" Delafosse when a retired Alaskan senator Warren Russell is found murdered. Not far off, the police come across Colorado canoeist Jim Hampton, who appears hungover and dazed but denies shooting Russell and insists that he himself was attacked by two others who stole his gear, which has been mysteriously returned, along with a skull and some old bones Hampton had discovered upriver. As Del investigates the murder, Jensen reads the Gold Rush journal Hampton found near the bones. Henry crosscuts the account of the murder investigation with entries from the journal, which is offered in full at the end of the novel. The two plot threads remain tenuously connected, despite the Yukon blizzard that occurs in each.

From Library Journal
Sgt. Alex Jensen Arnold (Murder on the Iditarod Trail, LJ 4/1/91) makes an encore appearance. Although damning circumstantial evidence fingers visiting canoeist Jim Hampton as the murderer of an ex-politician fisherman, Jensen intuits the truth of Hampton's story. As the investigation continues, bringing furtive assault and theft, both men become involved in a journal Hampton discovered dealing with the 1897 Yukon gold rush. Pristine scenery, in-depth characterization, and the historical sideline should duplicate the success of Henry's first.

Gold fever just may grab you
By R. K. Smith
Sue Henry's second book is every bit as good as Murder on the Iditarod Trail. Set this time in the Yukon, she weaves the story of an unfortunate gold prospector of 1898 into a modern murder mystery. While history doesn't exactly repeat itself, it certainly won't let the modern characters escape from what happened way back then.
Ms. Henry intersperses today's mystery with passages from the journal of Addison Harley Riser, whose journal and bones were found by Jim Hampton, an outdoorsman on his dream vacation. The vacation turns into a nightmare when he's suspected of killing a controversial ex-senator. Alaskan State Trooper Alex Jensen, detailed to assist RCMP Inspector Charles Delafosse, is not convinced of Hampton's guilt, and soon is also fascinated by Riser's journal. The crimes are awfully similar.
You will not be able to put this book down, so just get comfortable. It's another keeper.

It captures the "Spell of the Yukon."
By John Kleber
Sue Henry came as a fresh Arctic wind into my Old Kentucky Home. Three times I have visited Alaska, and on two of those occasions, I hit the Yukon Territory. This book is especially meaningful for anyone who has been to Dawson City. She has caputured the spirit of that small isolated town so rich in history. And no one writes as well about the dangers of an Arctic winter. This book led me to all her other novels, and I enjoyed them equally as much. I never thought I would find anyone to equal Robert Service in conveying the feel for the frozen North, but Henry has come very close. Perhaps this work will make more of us in the lower forty-eight realize that the Yukon is a place apart from Alaska, with exciting tales and rich culture all its own. Certainly it demonstrates that crime knows no national boundaries, and Henry writes about it equally well on both sides of the line. Mush on Sue.

Past and present are interwoven
By Karen Potts
Sue Henry writes another winner in "Termination Dust", the second book of her Alex Jensen Mystery Series. Canoeist Jim Hampton is on a trip down the Yukon River when he discovers the bones and the journal of a prospecter, Addison Riser from the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897. While pondering the question of what may have caused Riser's death, Hampton is attacked and left for dead himself. He escapes and is discovered by Detective Alex Jensen and Inspector Charles Delafosse who are investigating a stolen car ring and the murder of a prominent man. There is evidence to suggest that Hampton committed the murder and the two lawmen investigate that possibility. The story continues with the constant weaving of Riser's story from the 1800's with that of modern-day Hampton. The story includes lost treasure and a further murder. Henry makes the story rich and complex, yet manages to convincingly tie up all of the loose ends at the end. The reader is also treated to the rich background of the Yukon and a history lesson about the Gold Rush.

They call it The Heartland Child Murders. Everyone else calls it a nightmare. Locked doors don't stop him. He leaves no trace behind. He only takes little girls. His nickname: The Iceman.

A deranged serial killer roams wintry rural Nebraska with a demented purpose no one can fathom. Special Agent Emma Kane, a former DC cop and damaged goods now with the FBI, is assigned to babysit burnt-out profiler Jacob Thorne, once the best in the business but now said to have lost his edge, as they both fly to Nebraska to catch this maniac. Thorne is erratic, abrasive and unpredictably brilliant, but what he and Kane find in the heartland is much more than anyone bargained for, especially when the Iceman challenges them personally. The clock is ticking and a little girl's life is on the line. And maybe even more with that, once they find out what he's really up to.

Pleasantly Surprised
By Alex
I got this book after reading the reviews, so I'd seen several people complain about the typos. Fortunately, I got it after the author had released a revised edition, which seems to have fixed all of those issues. Also, the swearing doesn't seem that excessive to me. They are cops, there is swearing, but I think it fit the attitudes and the environment.

For the actual story-it was definitely a good read. The chapters are very short which helps the story move along quickly. The first three chapters seem kind of disconnected (as they jump from one event to the next), but as soon as they got tied together, I was hooked. The author did a very good job with providing several twists along the way, kind of hinting at the ending, but with just enough details left out that you're still surprised when it actually happens.

Also, if you're a fan of being very surprised at the end of a crime book, you should definitely read this book. It's ending is brilliant and I there's no way that I could have seen it coming.

Good book but...
By AvidReader
This book is actually really really good. There are many interesting twists and turns and nothing is ever quite as it seems. That being said, I have only two complaints. One: the excessive profanity. I'm not a prude, but it was really kind of ridiculous. I know that in most genres there is cursing and I'm okay with that but I lost count of how many times the f word was thrown in so when Thorne lost his temper, the words--even in all caps--didn't hold the same punch. If that bothers you...this isn't one for your reading list. Two: the typos. We're talking whole sentences that were out of order. It makes for a distracting read and often interferes with the suspense during high tension moments. If that was cleaned up I would have rated it higher because it's a smart thriller that is hard to put down...unless, of course, you get irritated with the typos and almost comical "crude cop" talk and need a break. But seriously, being his first novel I was super impressed and can't wait to see what happens with Thorne and Kane.

Best book ive read in years!
By A great book.
I am an avid horror/suspense reader and for the past few years, have been rather disappointed with many of the books I've read, until this one. This book had me hooked from the first paragraph and I was unable to put it down! The story is fantastic, the characters are very relatable, and the twists actually shocked me! Mr. Travis is fairly new to the scene, but he is quickly becoming a genre favorite, and I am looking forward to anything new that he writes. I would like to thank Mr. Travis for sharing his wonderful gift with us!

Title: Once Bitten, Twice Shy
Series: The Wold Smitten Series
Designation: Book Two, Not A Standalone, Does Include Cliffhanger
My Rating: FIVE SEXY STARS*****
Wow! I love it! Once Bitten,Twice Shy is the exciting second installment in The Wolf Smitten Series by new author, Phoenix Johnson. Her talent and imagination shine brightly in this amazing continuation of Derek and Krissy's story. After a seven year failed relationship and the upsetting death of his Mother, handsome veterinarian Derek moves to New York City for a fresh start. On his second day in his new apartment he finds his beautiful new neighbor, Krissy, sunbathing on the roof - in the nude! Oh my! No one ever comes to the roof that early, so when she's caught without her clothes, she plays it cool. But Krissy is anything but cool. In fact, her new neighbor Derek is making her very hot indeed. Besides, it's been six months since her breakup with James and it would be so nice to meet a great guy. Sparks fly and heat flares instantly between the two. After a dangerous and harrowing experience with Krissy's ex-boyfriend, the couple think they are finally headed for smooth sailing - until Derek gets a call from Aubree, his ex-girlfriend from London and she's not in London - she's here at the airport and she wants him back and is willing to do anything to get him! What? She doesn't even know he's a wolf so how will Derek's wolf react to Aubree's unwanted advances? Will Derek's dark secrets be revealed? Derek does finally learn how he became a wolf but now he and everyone around him may be in even more danger. Can Derek finally learn to accept his life or will he choose to destroy his wolf possibly destroying himself in the process? Will Krissy lose her wolf...uh...man to the deceitful, conniving Aubree? Oh my! Exciting! Well Written! Smart! Compelling! Riveting! Suspenseful! Romantic! Sexy! Great entertainment!

Once Bitten, Twice Shy (Wolf Smitten Trilogy) Part 2 by Phoenix Johnson
By Pamela Talley
HOT and STEAMY Adventure Story!
Krissy and Derek's rest and recuperation comes to an abrupt end with one phone call from Derek's ex-girlfriend, Aubree. She has just arrived from England and she wants her man back, her man? Wasn't this the man she dumped for the new assistant the minute Derek left for Texas to mourn the death of his mother? Really! Krissy is upset, but after the few days that Derek and she have spent together, Aubree will have to be superwoman to take Derek away from her. How will they get rid of Aubree quickly? Will they get her back on the plane to England without revealing Derek's long kept secret? Why is Mike, the doorman, out of the hospital? What is he doing with this mysterious doctor who may know something about Derek's past? More mystery, more questions and you can be sure, more danger!
The Second installment of The Wolf Smitten Trilogy is a roller coaster ride that will hold you captive until it come to an abrupt end. What decisions will Derek make and how will they affect his wolf and Krissy? The one constant thing between Derek and Krissy are their HOT STEAMY love scenes. They have an incredible attraction to each other that his wolf enhances. Phoenix Johnson writing style is perfect for the fast paced adventures that her heroes are experiencing. I love her characters; they are perfect for this fast moving, ever changing story. Have I mentioned that there is a cliff hanger? No? Oh, well there is but I didn't fall too far and there is room for you next to me on the hillside. Thank you, Phoenix Johnson for the great, I loved it.

FANTASTIC READ!!!!!
By Patsy Sacco
Loved it. The chemistry between Krissy and Derek is amazing, and she is so sure of him that she truly trusts him. I was so sure Arbree had put something in the wine, but she didn't. She did play dirty, but Krissy knew it wasn't his idea and Aubree had taken advantage of the situation. A lot of questions got answered and what a surprise about Neal. Loved the beginning of the third book. Can't wait to read it. This set of books hooks you from page one, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. Only complaint was it was too short. Wanted more NOW. Don't miss this series. I received this book as a gift for an honest review. Patsy Sacco
