Review
Reviewed by Lee Ashford for Reader's Favorite 5 Stars

Lady Justice on the Dark Side delves into a very real and very incendiary current event, pitting a small segment of society against the police who risk life and limb to keep us safe. Thornhill does an admirable job presenting all sides of the issue. He does not champion a cause based on socio-economic realities, but airs dirty laundry from all factions. Walt and his band of companions are the ideal vehicles by which to expound 'the rest of the story' to readers. Very well-written, as are all his books. A must-read if ever I saw one.

About the Author
Award-winning author, Robert Thornhill, began writing at the age of sixty-six and in five short years has penned nineteen novels in the Lady Justice mystery/comedy series, the seven volume Rainbow Road series of chapter books for children, a cookbook and a mini-autobiography. Lady Justice and the Sting, Lady Justice and Dr. Death, Lady Justice and the Vigilante, Lady Justice and the Candidate, Lady Justice and the Book Club Murders, Lady Justice and the Cruise Ship Murders, Lady Justice and the Vet and Lady Justice and the Pharaoh’s Curse won the Pinnacle Award for the best new mystery novels of Fall 2011, Winter 2012, Summer 2012, Fall 2012, Spring of 2013, Summer of 2013, Spring of 2014 and Fall of 2014 from the National Association of Book Entrepreneurs. Many of Walt’s adventures in the Lady Justice series are anecdotal and based on Robert’s real life. Although Robert holds a master’s in psychology, he has never taken a course in writing and has never learned to type. All 30 of his published books were typed with one finger and a thumb! His wit and insight come from his varied occupations, including thirty-three years as a real estate broker. He lives with his wife, Peg, in Independence, Missouri. Retirement really - not for this guy...loved it!
By Mary S
I’ve been following the “Lady Justice” series by Robert Thornhill since it started and was just as excited to read this story “Lady Justice on the Dark Side” as I was the last. Walt and Ox, two police officers, great partners on the force, but most of all…best friends in life. If “Murphy’s Law” is to strike, it finds these two these gentlemen. On a police call, both men get shot by two guys seeking revenge for the loss of their brother. This time, Walt promises his wife (Maggie) he’ll retire. Ox is sad to see his partner go but understands, after all, he is seventy years old.

Walt retires and finds out within the first week he is bored to tears and his old partner is assigned a new one, 30 years his junior. Walt’s boredom was seen as an opportunity for his brother-in-law (Kevin) to get some surveillance help on a current case. He agrees and a day later, Walt is in the car, snaps a couple of pictures and it’s over. Is the case really wrapped up that quick? A week later, Kevin asks again and they have the same results, it’s over as quick as it started and the amount of money Walt was paid is eye opening and easy.

As a retired and decorated police officer, he thinks about opening his own business, with the support of Maggie and friends “Walt Williams Investigations” is opened. During his first case, he learns more than he ever expected about his own life and who makes up his family, this is a story worth reading.

So, what side of Lady Justice does Walt like playing? The author describes it beautifully, “the lady wearing the flowing white robe and a blindfold” or the lady “wearing a tight skirt, fish-net stockings and high heels” where the end the game is the same it’s all in the rules.

At what point do the ends justify the means?
By cynthia butcher
At what point do the ends justify the means? That’s a question Walt Williams must ask himself as his life takes a new direction in Lady Justice on the Dark Side.

Walt finds himself at a career crossroads which causes him to question his black and white views of right and wrong. He wonders whether he can head down a slippery slope of questionable activities if, in the end, he will come up once again at the side of Lady Justice, his ever constant companion of the past five years. Does it really matter on which side he stands as long as justice is truly served?

As one of Bob Thornhill’s editors, it’s been a pleasure to come to know and understand his cast of characters and to watch their development throughout the Lady Justice series. Because Bob writes cozy mysteries, it’s very hard to fully develop all of the characters in just one volume. Therefore, I love it when Bob pulls someone like Louis the Lip into a story line, giving me a different perspective on his motives and personality, demonstrating how even Louis’ questionable actions can lead back to the side of justice.

Every time I finish a new Lady Justice book, my conversation with Bob usually ends with me saying, “This is my favorite story line yet!” And I mean it every time. So, please trust me when I say, Lady Justice on the Dark Side is, yes, another favorite. I hope you enjoy the dark side of justice as much as I did.

Retirement for Walt? What's next?
By C. F. Jones
Four years ago Walt Williams, a retired real estate agent filled one of his bucket list items by convincing the Kansas City, MO police department to hire him, a senior who qualified for Medicare, to be an auxiliary policeman in an agency created just for him: The City Retiree Action Patrol (C.R.A.P for those fond of puns). Now, after an ambush that almost cost him and his partner, Ox, their lives, Walt decides to give retirement another try. In steps Kevin, Walt’s half-brother who is an unlicensed P.I. Is this the new life for Walt? P.I.’s often walk a fine line. Will Walt succumb to quick and easy fixes? Can he still serve Lady Justice under new and often dubious rules? Book 19 in this mystery/comedy series hopes he can, as Walt knows he’s not equipped to be a Hy-Vee grocery bagger yet. True to Thornhill’s past style, we find laughs enough to off-set grim reality and thoughts to ponder about the strange course of life and justice. And now, while still rooting for Lady Justice and the official court systems that make our country great, we can also enjoy some moments of poetic justice, too.

This collection of short stories is perfect for the reader who wants a quick
By Suraya
This collection of short stories is perfect for the reader who wants a quick, easy read during a commute or coffee break. Every story has a twist.
The author opens each story with a believable scenario, which sets up the reader to expect that something within that scene to happen. However, half way through, the story shifts to focus on another character or another scene with the narrator imagining scenarios as in the story, The Body in the Woods. The narrator discovers the body of a homeless man and alerts the authorities. After they leave, he sees a briefcase and opens it. There are documents inside the briefcase. They lead him to contact a person he thinks might be the deceased’s daughter. She is a public figure and instead of being grateful to him for returning what turns out to be her father’s personal items she becomes angry and wants to know what he expects from her to keep the items secret. We find out why when he opens a copy of her father’s book, written as an academic many years earlier.
His stories hint at ghostly presences and we read about shadowy figures appearing in unexpected places. For example, the door knock which unexpectedly changed temperature in The Knocker. We are also reminded that people are not what they seem in Leaving it all Behind and that it is all too easy to jump to the wrong conclusion in The Waxed Jacket.
Geoffrey West draws believable characters who are easy to imagine. Occasionally he leaps ahead and delivers the punch line without giving us the benefit of taking the journey with him. In that sense he sometimes misses opportunities to build tension or for showing us character flaws. For example, he might have given a hint of Lucinda’s duplicity which would have made the reader pay more attention to the story line knowing that something unexpected was coming simply by the way she said one thing then undermined it by a glance or small action, which the narrator misses, but we catch. That way the reader could have felt like he or she was in on the secret and on the lookout for the moment when she gave herself away. This would have unsettled the reader enough to make him or her wonder why things did not quite add up yet still been surprised by the end.
There are many tales I could discuss but have chosen these few as tasters. I hope you enjoy all of them as I did.

A collection of short stories packed full of all good things
By Georgia Rose
Having already read ‘Rock’n’Roll Suicide’ and ‘Doppelganger’ I am a firm Jack Lockwood fan and was delighted to see West release a book of short stories which all feature this favourite character of mine.

Jack is the mate everyone needs to have in their life, honest and dependable he’s always willing to help out a friend and as well as being able to take care of himself when faced with any kind of trouble he is good company and the type of guy you’d want to go for a drink with. There are 22 short stories in this collection which range from humorous tales with a twist to spooky supernatural stories when leave you with much to think about.

I was going to single out some favourites in this review but every time I picked out one to mention another popped into my mind and I decided I’d end up talking about them all and this would go on forever. Suffice to say this is an excellent introduction to this authors work packed full of all good things, strong writing and wonderful imagination.

There are also extracts for a couple of West’s novels at the back and in these West gets to torment Lockwood by putting him in all sorts of precarious situations but on a much grander scale than can be achieved in a short story and all for our enjoyment!

Recommended!
By Bodicia
I downloaded this collection of short stories yesterday morning and, after reading the first story, I picked it up at every opportunity throughout the day.

I really enjoyed these. There is a mixed bag of genres, all involving Jack Lockwood, whose unique voice and personality shines through. Mr West does a good job of putting Jack in some interesting situations and testing his character to the hilt.

My favourites are:

Crash – A doctor helps Jack at a crash site by showing him how to help the victims in her unique way…

The Marrakesh Express – Jack drops some lead from a church roof straight on to a woman’s grave just as her husband turns up…

The Secret – Village gossip runs rife as the new vicar’s midnight visitors are speculated about. His reputation is at stake…

This collection is the perfect introduction to Geoffrey’s writing and also his renowned Jack Lockwood character who appears in his mystery novels. Good stuff!

Review for Fearsome is the Fakahatchee
By richard beatty
I have known Charles for 59 years. We have explored Fakahatchee and the vast and silent Everglades for years. I think this book tells the reader of sights, smells and sounds of the Everglades. The people in the book were friends we grew up with. Charles did a great job, I write this, not because he is my best friend, but because it brings back great memories. Keep up the good work.

England 1066: At the monastery of De'Ath's Dingle, during a completely pointless theological debate, there is a mysterious death.

Routine business for the average investigative medieval monk.

Unfortunately this isn’t a tale of average monks.

Anyone who would put the idiot Brother Simon in charge of a murder investigation is either one chant short of a plainsong, or is up to something.

When Brother Hermitage, innocent in every way, including bystanding, is lined up for execution, he begins to wonder if something might be going on. Perhaps his new companion Wat, weaver of pornographic tapestry, can figure out what it is. Before it's too late.

If you are a lover of the historical detective genre, if you have a deep respect for the worlds created, don’t read this book. It’ll only upset you.

Brother Hermitage's second case, The Garderobe of Death, is available on Kindle and things haven't improved.

Not knowing any better he even tries again in the new tale, The Tapestry of Death.

After that it gets completely out of control and books start appearing without rhyme or reason - particularly reason.

Your author turns his attention to the Battle of Hastings and what might have happened - but probably didn't, in The Domesday Book (No, Not That One)

medieval hysterical mystery - must read!
By Gryphonesse
This tale was so well written and so absolutely hilarious I caught myself laughing out loud and scaring my pets and husband. The chronicler has done his research well; the scenery and historical elements are utterly believable. The characters are true gems - you will come to adore Brother Hermitage and the indomitable Wat. The style is very "british humour" - wry puns and plays on words, along with deadpan exchanges that are positively riotous. The mystery is actually a good one, and the subject matter is erudite - do NOT miss your chance to read this book. I cannot WAIT for the next Chronicle, so Howard, get thy behind to the scriptorium and keep the stories coming!

Entertaining
By Annezo
I wasn't sure when I started this if I was going to like it--the writing seemed a bit rough. However, I soon got into it and found it an interesting read. Not that complex, but entertaining.

My main complaint is that, while I don't object to a story being continued in a future volume, I do expect each volume to have an ending of some sort. I'm accustomed to books ending with a near-cliffhanger but I don't think I've ever read one before that just *stopped* virtually in the middle of a conversation. The file didn't even have a "the end" or anything. Two people are conversing and then there's just no more text. It was more annoying than you might believe--the author would have needed no more than a few sentences to wrap up the current scene and lay the groundwork for the next volume but they didn't bother. Add to that a profusion of grammar and punctuation errors--never quite enough to make me stop reading but enough to interrupt the flow of the story, and....

I find myself thinking, "Well, if the author didn't care about their own story any more than this, why should I?" Not sure if I'd buy the next volume in the story or not. This kind of seemingly minor annoyance can linger--especially when it's your last 'view' of a book.

LOVE THE MONKS!!!!
By Amazon Customer
I just finished this little book last night. I found myself stealing time to read this funny yet enlightening book. Right after I finished it I ordered the second book. How can you go wrong with the prices? I have never read a book about monks that was not funny. Strange ways but sensible. Get the book and read it. You will love it. Now on to book 2.

Revenge
By Abe F. March
The author has done it again. He wrote a compelling novel filled with lots of action and suspense. Once I started reading, I couldn’t stop.
The title caused me to pre-judge the story; however I was pleasantly surprised as the plot developed. The main character, Rick, an ex Army Ranger, is devastated when his wife and daughter is murdered in an auto accident. It was no accident and that’s were the intrigue begins. Filled with vengeance, he is determined to find and kill those responsible. A female Detective on the NYPD along with a FBI Agent team up to bring down the Russians responsible. Self-preservation becomes a major factor with corruption within the government. The Russians want to eliminate the main witness to the tragedy while this witness wants to eliminate the Russians involved. The story takes the reader on a wild race to the finish

From Booklist
*Starred Review* When they met in high school, awkward Rachel and coveted beauty Clara formed an unlikely, albeit airtight, bond. Years later, Rachel has bloomed into a successful crime-news correspondent and Clara is a free-spirited artist with a hefty inheritance cushion. Life has intervened, and they see each other rarely, so Rachel feels obligated to drive down from London when Clara arranges an evening out with old classmates. But Clara is nowhere to be found that evening. Clara’s a bit flaky, so Rachel dismisses the incident until she arrives at a Brighton police press conference and discovers she’s meant to cover a report of a missing person: Clara. In the coming weeks, Rachel’s initial devastation shifts to suspicion as she becomes the prime suspect and begins to believe that Clara is framing her. The narrative takes the form of Rachel’s confidential letter to Clara, full of inside jokes and hinted evils. It’s a winning method of spine-tingling foreshadowing that frames the constant question: Has Rachel gone mad and blocked her connection to the disappearance, or has Clara’s affection turned to something darker? Debut author McBeth’s Gone Girl–style psychological thriller will be a widespread hit for fans of dark drama with questionable narrators, including S. J. Watson’s Before I Go to Sleep (2011), Sabine Durrant’s Under Your Skin (2013), and Karen Perry’s The Innocent Sleep (2014). --Christine Tran

An Enjoyable "Soft" Thriller
By TKnite
I have a lot of different thoughts on this book.

Let me start with the structure.

The entire book was written like a long letter to Clara from Rachel, which I thought was a very interesting take on a thriller novel. You’re aware the entire book that the events have already taken place, and that Rachel is writing the story with the express knowledge of what happens at the end. She knows all the twists and turns of the plot, so she can portray them however she pleases.

This results in a lot of information about Rachel’s true personality being kept under wraps, except for a few places at the end where it leaks through. For most of the novel, she portrays herself as a successful career woman horribly wronged and accused of something she didn’t do. You really have to pay attention to the subtext of what Rachel is saying to get a glimpse at the hidden personality issues beneath the pity-me news reporter.

I really like this aspect of the book because you have always an underlying sense that something is very wrong with the protagonist’s depiction of events, but you can’t quite point out what it is until the final few chapters. It’s an eerie feeling, knowing that you, the reader, are being manipulated and can do nothing to resolve it until you reach the end of the book. I think the structure of the story lends quite a lot to the “thriller” aspect. It keeps you guessing. And mildly disturbed as the protagonist’s behavior and thoughts gradually reveal the truth.

However, the ambiguity of the plot’s resolution bothered me somewhat.

You’re led to believe that certain elements of the story have been deliberately (or not) falsified by the protagonist, but at the end, it’s revealed that most of the protagonist’s story is in fact true. I was expecting an incredible twist at the end, but then the plot backtracked and settled on Rachel’s version of events as the story’s canon. I thought this was a very strange choice, and while I do appreciate originality, the story’s conclusion left me feeling like I was missing out on some huge revelation. A lot of the “reveals” of the story are heavily foreshadowed, and I guessed most of them ahead of time, so when I reached the last page, I felt a bit let down. There was no “thrilling” element in the plot’s climax.

Now, the ending.

This ending is definitely a “love it or hate it” situation. Some readers are going appreciate the implications that the ending has, while others will feel like they’ve been cheated out of a definitive resolution to the conflict. I’m somewhere in the middle. I understand why the ending was the way it was. It makes sense, on many levels, given the nature of the story. However, because I felt like I missed out on some “big reveal,” the ending came off as a bit of a let down, too. I knew it was going to happen, as soon I reached the end of Rachel’s letter to Clara, so it wasn’t a surprise so much as it was a confirmation of the nature of the story itself.

Precious Thing is largely a psychological dissection of an obsessive friendship gone awry. And on many levels, it works. There are places where the story is sufficiently disturbing in its portrayal of Clara and Rachel’s personality issues. The way that their friendship ultimately self-destructs and how that destruction played into the plot was perfectly done.

My only real issues with the story are the way that the destruction is resolved: the inevitable showdown between Clara and Rachel, the one you expect for the entire story, lacks the excitement I would expect in a thriller. It just sort of…fizzles out. The final act that determines the story’s real conclusion is off screen. You see only a brief news report about it, and then the story ends. You are left with only with the implication of that final act. After an entire story of ambiguity and hidden truths, I wanted some kind of definitive conclusion, and I didn’t get it.

Overall, though, I thought the story had a lot of merit as a subtle thriller and a frighteningly possible dramatic account of how a friendship can go horribly, horribly wrong.

____

Writing

Since this book is written in letter format, it has a lot of long, winding sentences that are used to show certain emotional shifts and hint at the underlying truths of the situation. While this style portrays Rachel’s thoughts and feelings very well, there were times when I got lost in some of the ideas and had to reread. There were times the style worked beautifully, and a few places where it faltered. Ultimately, I thought the style choice worked for the story.

____

Is It Worth Reading?

The answer depends on what you want from a story. If you’re the high-octane thriller type, this is not the book for you. But if you like (or think you’ll like) gradually escalating thriller elements with a believable and dramatic portrayal of a toxic friendship weaved in, this will probably work for you. I’ve heard people say this is somewhat similar the bestselling Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, and though I never got around to finishing Gone Girl, I think that’s a fair assessment on many levels. So, if you like the story structure that Gone Girl and similar books provide, you will probably like Precious Thing, too.

Psychological thriller for sure on psycho
By MoonShineArtSpot
I was immediately drawn to this book because of the idea of a sister like, lifelong friend. I loved Rachel's flash backs to the past and how she & Clara grew up & grew to be the best of friends. She described Clara in a very negative way to be such good buddies though. I was first curious about that and could not read fast enough because I was so curious to know what would happen next. I did notice, and get aggravated, that in Rachel's long letter (the book) to Clara that she seemed to say Clara's name in every sentence. It did seem to make more sense at the end.

The book was full of twists and turns that kept my mind churning trying to figure out what was going on. What was Clara's deal. I respected Rachel & felt for her because of her mother's coldness to her as a child and admired that she grew up to be so successful and outgoing.

I was very surprised at the last bit of the book & it is so hard to discuss without spoilers and I hate when people tell you step by step what happens as a review. I'll just say this is a thrilling mix up of pieces you will enjoy putting together. The ending is so twisted, dark, with a touch of nuts that I personally loved it. I am glad I was given a free copy to for an honest review. It is a favorite of mine this month.

Wonderful, thrilling read with a twist

*** Received ARC for free as part of Goodreads First Reads ***

This was a GREAT book. I haven't read a thriller in a while, but I was hooked on this one. Each chapter made me want more. I read through this one in a night because I couldn't put it down. I'm surprised that this is a debut novel by Colette McBeth. The author writes so vividly and draws you into the story about an intense female friendship, betrayal, death, and living in someone's shadow. The story wove together expertly with a twist at the end that I did not expect, but made perfect sense. I highly recommend this book for fans of suspense, and look forward to more books by this author.

Closer than the Bones (A Deep South Mystery), by Dean James

Recently retired from teaching high school English, Ernestine Carpenter freely admits that she's more than a bit nosy. Ernie (as she's called by her nearest and dearest) is also good at solving problems, and she's let it be known, amongst them, that she's willing to take on...interesting...jobs. Mary Tucker McElroy, well-known in Southern literary circles as a generous patron. Six months earlier, her literary group had gathered for the Christmas festivities at Idlewild, Miss McElroy's ancestral home in north central Mississippi, and one guest, writer Sukey Lytton, turned up dead in the pond one day, an apparent, but suspicious suicide. Miss McElroy is convinced that Sukey Lytton was murdered, and she wants Ernie to help her figure out the guilty party. But who can it be? Was it Lurleen Landry, best-selling author of Southern women's fiction? Did Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Russell Bertram kill her? Or was it his nasty, vindictive wife Alice? Maybe it was literary enfant terrible Brett Doran, who seems to have more than one secret to hide. Could Sukey Lytton's missing manuscript be the motive? When the killer strikes again, it’s up to Ernie to save her friends and find the killer...or she may be next!

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of the traditional stately home murder case can rejoice the genre is alive and well in James's second mystery (after 2000's Cruel as the Grave). If Idlewild, a Mississippi manse, had a butler, you could be sure he'd be the murderer. Mary Tucker McElroy, Idlewild's matriarch and a belle of iron, summons her proteges ostensibly to help her with her memoirs. In truth, she suspects one is a killer. Six months before, Sukey Lytton, a young woman writer whose viciousness had endeared her to no one, drowned. Her death was declared a suicide, but Mary Tucker thinks otherwise. To help her find the guilty party she hires Ernestine Carpenter, a retired schoolteacher in whom 40 years teaching high school English have instilled an iron will of her own. The guests assemble a motley crew of disagreeable literati whose conversation turns the dinner table into an arena for verbal gladiatorial combat. Sukey, it seems, wrote a novel, which is now missing. In it, she revealed the guests' darkest secrets. Stately homes all have dark secrets, even if the ones here turn out to be relatively tame. The final disagreeable guest to arrive is a literary agent loathed by all. Most disagreeably, he has found Sukey's manuscript: The die is cast. Before long, bodies lie draped about like antimacassars. Ernestine is a determined, if not very plausible, sleuth; but then nothing is truly plausible in this book. Still, it's fun to revisit the old stately home. Agent, Nancy Yost. (May)There's also a simultaneous trade paper edition ($13.95 ISBN 1-57072-183-1).

From the Author
A seventh-generation Mississippian now transplanted to Texas, Dean James grew up with scads of cousins all over the place, none of whom has ever married one another as far as he knows. Sitting around on porches on hot summer days, listening to adults telling stories, he decided he wanted to tell stories, too. He wrote his first novel when he was twelve and has been making up stories ever since. No matter where those stories are set, something Southern creeps in, because he thinks that growing up Southern was like living in the middle of every one of Shakespeare's plays all at once. Comedy, drama, tragedy, farce--they're with you every day; all you have to do is choose.

When he's not thinking up stories, Dean is the Manager of "Murder by the Book", Houston's nationally known mystery specialty bookstore. He is the co-author, with Jean Swanson, of By a Woman's Hand: A Guide to Mystery Fiction by Women (second edition, Berkley Prime Crime, 1996). The first edition of this popular reference book on contemporary women mystery writers was nominated by the "Mystery Writers of America" for the Edgar Award for Best Critical-Biographical Work, and it won the Agatha and Macavity Awards for Best Non-Fiction. The second edition was nominated for both the Agatha and Anthony Awards

With Jan Grape, he is the co-editor of Deadly Women , another volume on women mystery writers, published by Carroll & Graf in 1997. Deadly Women was nominated for the Edgar Award for Best Critical/Biographical Work and won the Macavity Award for Best Non-Fiction from Mystery Readers International. In 1998, Berkley Prime Crime published Killer Books: A Reader's Guide to Exploring the Popular World of Mystery and Suspense , which he wrote with Jean Swanson. His first mystery short story, "The Village Vampire and the Oboe of Death," was published by Avon Books in September 1998 in the Malice Domestic 7 anthology; it was nominated for the Agatha Award for Best Short Story. Other stories have appeared in Canine Crimes and A Canine Christmas, both published by Ballantine Books. Two new stories will be published in summer 2000, in the anthologies Magnolias and Mayhem (Silver Dagger Mysteries) and A Confederacy of Crime (NAL/Signet). His first novel for Silver Dagger is Cruel As The Grave.

From the Back Cover
Big-city PIs would envy Ernestine Carpenter's intimate knowledge of small-town relationships and how family secrets can fester into murder. Dean James writes with equal intimacy and knowledge of those relationships, and in crafting another thoughtful problem for Ernie to solve, he gives us a compelling mystery in the Carolyn Hart tradition."

~Margaret Maron

The traditional mystery is not dead. Thanks to Dean James, it takes on new life in the New South, where (just like the Old South) ladies of a certain age are noticeably quirky, everyone is hiding a guilty secret, cooks know their way to your heart, and murderers are . . . almost . . . impossible to detect. James's CLOSER THAN THE BONES is a fine variation on a fine tradition, and enjoyable from start to finish. -- Charlaine Harris

An engaging mystery
By A Customer
In Tullahoma, Mississippi, retired sixty-year-old school teacher Ernestine "Ernie" Carpenter enjoys solving problems. Being single, Ernie, who works from her home, relishes helping people with their troubles. She has quickly earned a reputation for results.

However, even Ernie is a bit taken aback when venerable wealthy icon Mary McElroy comes to Ernie's home for assistance. The elderly patron of Southern Belle Letters hires Ernie to uncover the identity of the individual who murdered writer Sukey Lytton six months ago in a reported accidental drowning. Since the same group will be at Mary's home, Ernie joins them on the pretense of helping Mary write her memoirs. Ernie quickly learns that Sukey's final manuscript is missing and wonders if that is the cause of the murder; that is if someone actually killed the author. Ernie also wonders if murder did indeed occur, and it is not the ramblings of a senior citizen, will the murderer strike again if the amateur sleuth gets too close to the truth?

This Ernie Carpenter tale, CLOSER THAN BONES, is an engaging mystery starring a fabulous lead protagonist. The story line moves forward in a genteel way as expected from a Southern cozy, but never slows down or looks back. Ernie is a great character and the support cast, especially the writing group provides the audience with an insightful novel that readers will enjoy while demanding Dean James return quickly with his heroine.

Career-changing first masterpiece
By Flash Sheridan
This is Wodehouse's first masterpiece, and (according to his best biographer, McCrum) it transformed his career and made him a success. It was the first book Wodehouse sold to the Saturday Evening Post, and the first he wrote with a new agent and a newly-wed wife; it's also vastly better crafted than anything he'd written previously. It shows the skill and heart, mixed with low humor, that characterize his mature pieces; it also earned him a huge sum of money. It's the first appearance of Blandings Castle, (with an insignificant exception) Lord Emsworth, the Efficient Baxter, the awe-inspiring butler Beach, and the rest of Blandings Castle's large and stratified domestic staff.

The book appeared in two versions, and the objective evidence doesn't make it clear which was written first. The US version, entitled _Something New_, and now available from Project Gutenberg, was published first. Terry Mordue's excellent annotations, available on the web, make it clear that the final version of the American text is later than the English, since the American version corrects a mistake that slips through in _Something Fresh_ (chapter 8, p. 164).

Æsthetically, however, it seems clear the the American version was a hasty revision of the English. The Americanization of three characters in _Something New_ was clearly an afterthought; the Efficient Baxter mistakes Ashe Marson (chapter 5, p. 102) for a guest, presumably a relation of Lord Emsworth's. Even though the Americanized Marson had attended Oxford, this does not suffice (trust me) to fool an Englishman. The Americanization of George Emerson is also an æsthetic failure; Wodehouse repeatedly refers to him as a superman, which works well for an imperial police commander (in a post held by Wodehouse's uncle and, much later, by his brother (chapter 3, p. 47)); it makes no sense for a generic American lawyer.

The original title, though, must have been "Something New," since that phrase occurs four times in the book, and "something fresh" not at all (Chapter 1, p. 20, attributed to Fr Rob Bovendaard). Recent American editions, however, retain the title _Something New_ but adopt the English text.

Laugh out loud funny
By Amazon Customer
The main characters in this book are Ashe Marston and Joan Valentine, two young Americans living in England who happen to work as hack writers, who both unknowingly have been employed to steal back the same scarab from the Earl of Emsworth. Much of the action in this book takes place at Blandings Castle. There are several extremely funny scenes in this book that will have you laughing out loud. I highly recommend it.

“One of the most delightful and original new novels of the year―the first in a series that could well become a cult.” (The Daily Mail)

A marvelous and not to be missed series debut.
By Society Nineteen
How do I love this book? Let me count the ways. I love its sharp, witty voice. Its brisk pace. Its mordant humor. Its vision of 1880s London, a place of huge energy and just as huge contrast. Its echoes of the penny dreadfuls of the Victorian period, and its marriage of them with a sensibility that is entirely satisfying to a modern reader. Its perfectly matched pair of sleuths, who spar constantly yet share a genuine affection. Its wonderful secondary characters, notably Harriet Fitzgerald and Inspector Pond. Its sardonic homage to Doyle (who makes a cameo appearance) and Holmes (who is modeled, the book posts, on its own detective, Sidney Grice). Its unexpected plot twists and its evolving backstory.

I could go on, but you get the point. I read an awful lot of 19th century mystery novels in my roles as both book reviewer and editor of an online journal focused on contemporary authors writing about that century. This book is one of those that stood out from the "crowd" immediately, leaving me remembering myriad moments in the story and genuinely eager for the next installment.

If you enjoy clever mysteries, Victorian era puzzles, or just good writing, this is definitely a book to read.

Solid But Flawed
By Heroine Librarian
I wanted to like this book more than I did. There's a lot of good here -- an engaging narrator with a good voice, a well-plotted mystery with twists and turns that are neither wholly predictable nor so out-of-left-field as to be unfair to the reader, and some intriguing secondary characters (especially police inspector Pound). But Sidney Grice was a difficult to like main character, almost of parody of the type he represents, and certainly a caricature. The writing style was frequently choppy -- once or twice I was convinced I must have skipped a page when I hadn't -- and there a several characters and plot points that could have used just a little more fleshing out. (This book could have benefited from one more editor's pass -- which might have kept one of the main characters from acquiring the last name of another in narration at one point.) At times, the "bits" (especially with Grice's glass eye) threatened to undercut the plot.

I read the kindle version of this book, which had numerous formatting errors -- line breaks in the wrong places, mostly -- which occasionally made it impossible to tell when one character stopped speaking and another began, or who was speaking at all.

But the plot is clever, the heroine/narrator is well done, and the book makes a perfectly suitable was to spend a lazy day. I would give this series another try, when there is a sequel (which is appears the author intends), but I wouldn't go too far out of my way for it.

A very well written and in many ways a funny detection novel...great start to a series
By D. Blankenship
I must admit that I do enjoy novels that are destined to become series. I must also admit that I am not all that much into `historical novels,' although I dearly love history books, in particular those dealing with Victorian England. I also admit that I love a good detection novel. I spotted this one at the local library and plucked it from the shelf on pure chance as I was in need of a change of pace in my reading. I am so grateful that I did. This is one of the best first novels of the beginning of a series I have read in a long, long time.

Now to clear up a moot point...this is NOT a Victorian detection novel...i.e. one that was written during the Victorian era, but rather a modern novel ABOUT Victorian London and it just so happens that it is a detection novel.

A young woman, the narrator of the story, has lost her family and has been taken as a ward by a leading London detective. This young lady has ideas and attitudes far, far more advanced than her contemporaries and are, and she is quite quick to voice her opinion. She talks her new caretaker (that is part of the story so no spoilers here) to let her work on his most current case and together - the older detective and the very bright young lady set about solving the crime of murder...or is it multiple murders?

Now I notice that several reviewers have stated that the writing is chopping in places. I read the hardback version of this and I am either slow on the uptake, or there is a problem with the Kindle edition of this book because I encountered absolutely no difficulties in following the story what so ever. As a matter of fact, I found this book to be very well written in every sense of the word. The strongest part of this work is the wonderful dialog between the young girl and the older detective and indeed, between quite a number of the characters in this story. It was actually quite funny at times and I found my self smiling a lot and chuckling from time to time.

Now I do not consider myself an `expert' when it comes to this era by any means; no, far from it. But with that being said I can tell you that I have been reading books about this era at a pretty steady pace for around 60 years now and I was unable to find anything to critical of as to the author's research and facts. Hey, some of those hundreds of books were bound to rub off on me on some level. If there were errors they are probably errors of perception and folks, you will have to dig pretty deep to even find those.

Now the detective for whom the young girl is a ward is, as others have pointed out, an extremely unlikeable character. If I find fault with the author's portrayal of him it would be the fact that she has used every stereotype of the upper class snobbish Englishman of that time and wrapped the all into one very remarkably unlikable passage. There is hope for him though...we see hints of this throughout the book via careful reading and I have a feeling that in future novels we will see this character evolve even more.

The plot flows nicely and is easy to follow and the twists and turns as to the `mystery' are adequate and well executed.

I suppose that when all is said and done, like every book ever written, it all boils down to the reading taste of the individual reader. I personally loved this thing and cannot wait to get to the next offering.

This was a library find.
