Pretty good

Again, I love the storyline and the premise of Riley. However, she has a smart mouth with nothing to back her up. She cannot fight and she is more or less a coward. She tries to get a backbone once in a while, consisting of using her werewolf claws and scratching,(just like you would see in a "girl fight"). Maybe, I am being to harsh, but I just get annoyed when someone is all bite and no bark, and still is touted as a "warrior." I loved meeting Juliet and as usual I loved Alyssa. Marvin makes a great appearance. I missed Darius. Even after my complaints, I would still recommend the book because it is still a good story.

funny, caffeine and junk food addicted werewolf

Riley Cray is a snarky, funny, caffeine and junk food addicted werewolf. Her sarcasm is a joy and she not afraid to get herself into trouble to do what needs to be done. And she is, often, in trouble. This was a joy to read and a great follow up to the first book in the series. I can't wait to read the next. AJ Colby puts her humor into her writing and it shows up in threads throughout her story.

When does it start?

The roller coaster didn't feel as raucous this go round. Though I'm still hooked on Riley, this second book didn't have nearly the bite the first installment did. Some of the scenes felt staged in plastic, and the crescendo I had hoped for, fell short. Like good music with the treble too low. However, it all felt worth it towards the end. Worth reading :) excited for the third installment.

An Ozarks Mystery ...

In Bred to the Bone: Deadly Secrets at Hunter's Mill, Lin Waterhouse captures the soul of the Ozarks character so well that I felt I was reading about my friends and neighbors (and a few relatives!) on every page. I particularly liked the blending of the historical and current story lines, and the way Lin wove the background of each character into the mystery. Her homage to the time-honored traditions of loyalty, hard work, and personal and family responsibility at the heart of Ozarks culture paints a somewhat nicer picture of the typical Ozarker than one sees in some books about the area. Her vivid descriptions of the beautiful countryside makes one feel like they could open their door and see the mill, the stream and all the colorful inhabitants of Hickory Bend. I look forward to reading more about all these folks and can't wait for the sequel!

TOP-NOTCH OZARK MYSTERY

This book fits nicely into the "Ozark Noir" category careated by Daniel Woodrell with book-turned-academy-award-nominated movie Winter's Bone.
Bred to the Bone is about the world of the deep Ozarks, where generations of people have come to be left alone and what happens when well meaning outsiders fall in love with the region and try to establish a life there. The mystery, which turns on knowing what the area was like generations before, kept me guessing til the very end. The characters are believable, likable (at least the good ones!) and the story pulls the reader forward. I'd recommend it to students of the Ozarks and mystery lovers alike.

Great Mystery in the Ozarks.

GREAT READ--KEEP IT COMIN'. First time user of a Kindle reader, I had a little trouble getting in a rhythm early on in the book, but this mystery novel just kept building in suspense and substance until I couldn't put it away until finished. Lin Waterhouse "gets it" with regard to the Ozarks culture both today and a hundred years ago. Her non-fiction "West Plains Dance Hall Explosion" demonstrated her respect for the history, culture and people of the Ozarks. That came through again in this first novel. All her characters (Caroline, Terry, Elsie, Oren, Tolman, Ida Jean, and Arlen), are actually not unlike people you will find in the Ozarks. The uniniated should know that the present-day Ozarks residents are a cross-section of natives, non-natives, book smart, woods smart, rich and poor. They all find a way to get along. When they don't, their story either ends up in Roberta's newspaper or hidden deeply in the woods. I feel sure that the secrets yielded in this novel are fictional but both Lin and this reader know the hills hold so many secrets. May her literary career never leave the Ozarks locale. Keep it comin', Lin

Dr. Shepard has hit another homer.

I was drawn like a moth to a flame. Didn't want to put the book down, but didn't want to go to sleep either. I was mesmerized from the first glimpse of the book and holding my breath as I read. The problem I have with Dr. Shepard's books is that I have to wait too darn long for the next one. When you read it you will know full well why I didn't want to go to sleep. I am not generous with 5 star reviews but this one should get higher.

Zombie Game Review, I think zombies may be real!

Got the book based on a recommendation from a friend. A lot of action and unexpected twists and turns. It was easy to read and I finished it in 2 days. I wasn't sure how zombies were going to be a part of a non post-apocalyptic world, but was pleasantly surprised by the connection between Haitian Voodoo and the undead! The Postscript gives some interesting insight into whether or not zombies really do exist in the modern world. Before reading the book I would have said a resounding "No." Right now, I'm not sure! Great thriller and very detailed medical scenes. I need to pick up a copy of the first book in this series!

A thriller straight from today's headline

After reading "The Missile Game" I couldn't wait to read "The Zombie Game" and it did not disappoint me. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough to see what happens next. Ms Keyes and Dr. Scott make an excellent team to defeat Isis and the Zombies. In the future I believe someone will show up at Dr Scott's door to go fishing.

About the Author
Tracy Comstock is a small-town girl from Missouri. She lives in a home where she is outnumbered 3:1 by the males in her life: her husband and their two extremely adorable, but terrifyingly ornery sons. She has no pets as all living things, besides humans, of course, come to her house to die, including the victims in her books. All her life Tracy devoured books. Her parents' most effective punishment was grounding her from reading. Although she has a B.S. in Education and a Masters in Literature, she was nudged down the path to publication by encouraging (and sometimes threatening!) family, friends, professors, and students. When not working on Emily's adventures, Tracy is an adjunct instructor for several local colleges, where she gets to teach others about her greatest passion: writing.

Getting Schooled on Murder

Ellington High English teacher Emily Taylor was more focused on how to help a failing student than where she was walking, which is why she literally stumbles over the body of the beloved Coach Jim Layton. The befuddled principal may be intent on just trying to get the school back to running as if nothing ever happened, but when the school counselor, who happens to also be Emily's neighbor and her mother's good friend, goes missing Emily finds that she can't leave matters to the police.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable modern mystery that is a twist on Nancy Drew as Emily and her best friend attempt to discover who murdered the coach and find their innocent missing friend. They are joined by Tad Higginbotham, their fellow teacher who continually teases Emily as she continually reminds herself that he is no longer her childhood crush. It's not working, but what is successful is the author's debut that is full of charm and takes full advantage of its unique setting within a high school full of unique characters and murderous opportunities.

Great cozy mystery

Though she might be a slight drama queen and her life is definitely a mess, despite being gainfully employed, Emily is tenacious when it comes to protecting her friends. She doesn't let being in over her head, or attempts on her life, slow her down. Her crush on Tad is only a minor distraction as this is one very determined young woman. I figured out whodunit pretty early on, but it didn't make it any less of an enjoyable read. It was funny and light-hearted, a good read.

I really enjoyed this book and I could not stop reading it!

This book is about Emily, who is a high school teacher, who finds the coach dead in the copy room. Her best friend in the book, Gabby, and Emily decide to investigate the murder of the coach and it grabs your attention from there on. I enjoyed reading this book by this author.

Interesting storyline, but...

I noticed many typos, grammatical errors, and sentences with missing words. It definitely needs better editing. Also, I get tired of the references to the situation that caused Patricia's son to leave town without explaining the situation. Also, in the first book, she talks about her son, Andy, with affection but at one point in this book, she sounds like she blames Andy for the situation even though she's said many times that whatever happened wasn't his fault. And she never talks about the other son who was in the photos on her wall.

Fun,fanciful mystery

So nice to have literary characters of a "certain" age not portrayed as incapable of an intelligent thought. For cat lovers, or pet lovers in general, a fun easy read. Nice for a quiet afternoon or rainy day. Doesn't require a lot of thought while it does keep it interesting.

What a marvellous debut novel: not a single mis-step, not one moment when I think, "ah, he'd never do that" or, "yeh, that's not very likely...". I simply could not stop reading: and I had things to do!

I don't go out of my way to read crime novels per se, but I like a book that lands me into a very real place, peopled with real characters. Found myself rooting for the good guys, hissing the bad guys, and felt as though I'd seen the story as a film. More, Ms Cadbury, more!

To Catch An Audience ...

I don't often read crime novels - they're not my genre of choice - but occasionally something presents itself that begs to be looked at. I chose To Catch A Rabbit because it offered not just a thrilling read but also because it exposes us to a modern issue, namely human trafficking and the sex-trade, and so has the potential to tell us something about the human condition.
The book certainly has a 'literary' feel to it and while Helen Cadbury's prose never becomes overly poetic, she can certainly write and I never questioned her style. As to characterisation, the cover blurb suggests that we will become intimate with Sean Denton but in fact I fould the portrayal of Karen Friedman more revealing. As the book progresses, Sean seems to recede into the background as we focus on Karen, but he then reasserts himself in the climactic ending. While Karen's story looks to be told, I sense that Sean has more to offer and that we may hear more of him before too long.
The plot itself is deftly woven and motors along at a steady, if not lightning pace with plenty of twists and turns before the obligatory explosive ending - and a final surprise.
An altogether good read.

A great crime novel

Young Police Community Support Officer Sean Denton finds a dead prostitute. Even though cases like this aren't his area of expertise yet and he needs to let someone else take over, he can't forget the girl. He's unofficially still trying to find out more about the case. Karen's brother Phil is missing, but his wife doesn't want to go to the police. Karen thinks something isn't right, because her brother wouldn't just disappear without contacting her. She's trying to find him, but her attempts aren't successful at all. For a long time her personal life was just something to get through, but now she finally starts to feel a little bit alive again. Even though Karen and Sean have very different lives, their paths will cross...

Sean is in over his head. The case he's trying to follow is more than fishy and he wants to figure it out. Soon he's getting into trouble and he's taking quite a lot of risks. Karen's marriage isn't as happy as it used to be and she meets someone she really likes. She keeps looking for her brother without the support of his wife. She's uncooperative and distant and Karen has no idea why. Matters become more and more complicated for both Sean and Karen and though they will eventually learn the truth, it has a price...

To Catch a Rabbit is a great book with an original story. I liked that Sean isn't an experienced police officer. Slowly the truth comes to light and I loved the way Helen Cadbury reveals it. I was gripped from the start and couldn't stop reading. There's a thrilling cliffhanger at the end which made me like the story even more. Both Sean and Karen are likable main characters and I wanted them to succeed, to find what they were looking for. Because I liked them so much I just had to find out more as soon as I could. I read this book in one sitting. It's a fantastic crime novel and I highly recommend it.

About the Author
Laurence Shames has been a New York City taxi driver, lounge singer, furniture mover, lifeguard, dishwasher, gym teacher, and shoe salesman. Having failed to distinguish himself in any of those professions, he turned to writing full-time in 1976 and has not done an honest day's work since. His basic laziness notwithstanding, Shames has published more than twenty books and hundreds of magazine articles and essays. Best known for his critically acclaimed series of Key West novels, he has also authored non-fiction and enjoyed considerable though largely secret success as a collaborator and ghostwriter. Shames has penned four New York Times bestsellers. These have appeared on four different lists, under four different names, none of them his own. This might be a record. Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1951, to chain-smoking parents of modest means but flamboyant emotions, Shames graduated summa cum laude from NYU in 1972 and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Shortly after finishing college, he began annoying editors by sending them short stories they hated. He also wrote longer things he thought of as novels. He couldn't sell them. By 1979 he'd somehow passed himself off as a journalist and was publishing in top-shelf magazines like Playboy, Outside, Saturday Review, and Vanity Fair. In 1982, Shames was named Ethics columnist of Esquire, and also made a contributing editor to that magazine. By 1986 he was writing non-fiction books whose critical if not commercial success first established his credentials as a collaborator/ghostwriter. His 1991 national bestseller, BOSS OF BOSSES, written with two FBI agents, got him thinking about the Mafia. It also bought him a ticket out of New York and a sweet little house in Key West, where he finally got back to Plan A: writing fiction. Given his then-current preoccupations, the novels--beginning with FLORIDA STRAITS--naturally featured palm trees, high humidity, dogs in sunglasses, and blundering New York mobsters. Having had the good fortune to find a setting he loved and a wonderfully loyal readership as well, Shames wrote eight Key West novels during the 1990s, before taking a decade-long detour into screenwriting and collaborative work. In 2013, he returned to his favorite fictional turf with SHOT ON LOCATION--a suspenseful and hilarious mix of Hollywood glitz and Florida funky.

Geezz - I love this guy

I'm barely into chapter three and I get "The sunshine didn't seem to slice straight through this viscous air; it seemed somehow to mix with it, to stir it, to lift it in folds and curls like a spoon in batter." If you've ever been to Florida you will love this analogy.

And in one sentence describes the beautiful and popular starlet off-screen. "This was not a big leap from her role in real life, except that in real life people got to know her well enough to change their minds." This is what I mean when I say Shames doesn't overwrite or do tedious descriptions. I get it like I'm in on the inside joke.

Then he injects these little barbs like "She's a cross between the school nurse and the Secretary of State." that catch you smiling while you're into the next sentence.

From past experience I know there will be a couple places in this book where a deeper experience of a character will express a wisdom that makes me stop and think. I actually have a list of just those kinds of quotes from his other books. It amazes me that Shames is able to combine the light and funny with the profound so seamlessly and write a riveting story in the process.

He's soooo my favorite author. I just wish he could write them as fast as I can read them.

Howard's detail for the medical explanation for attaining the perfect golf swing was both credible as well as entertaining

I've known Howard professionally for about 5 years as an attorney and businessman. In conversation he asked me if I played golf. When I told him that I was an avid golfer, he mentioned that he had just published a novel involving golf and asked me if I would read it. Without thinking I said I would although to be perfectly candid I considered it more of an obligation than a luxury, considering that we do some business together.

Much to my surprise, after the first few pages of this novel I was hooked and, quite frankly, I couldn't put the book down. Howard's detail for the medical explanation for attaining the perfect golf swing was both credible as well as entertaining. But the book is much more than just searching for the perfect swing. Nothing in this world of any value is free, and the protagonist paid a very steep price for perfection.

There are many life lessons to be learned in this book.

Howard's use of dialogue, his real life characters, and his crisp, fast moving chapters reminded me of one of my favorite authors, Elmore Leonard. I was amazed that this was a first novel, as it read as if he had been writing as a profession.

I would highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves golf and to anyone who would enjoy a good read.

A Great Read!

On its face, Revenge of the Golf Gods cleverly blends the philosophy of Shivas Irons in the cult novel Golf in the Kingdom with the “greed is good” moxie of Gordon Gekko from the movie Wall Street. But digging deeper, it is much more than that.... This is an intricately woven and compelling story of failed relationships, flawed characters, financial deceit, and performance enhancing drugs.

As a former PGA TOUR professional competing against the likes of Payne Stewart, Paul Azinger, Freddie Couples, and Ben Crenshaw, I found myself thoroughly immersed in the protagonist’s search for the “perfect” golf swing and his ultimate goal, to win the coveted United States Open. And as a teaching professional for the past twenty-five years, the technical jargon on the mechanics of the golf swing piqued my interest while creating a sense of authenticity.

Howard brings his characters to life with smart, snappy dialogue and a surprise ending, all of which made me laugh, cry, and even partake in some serious soul searching.

In the final analysis, all of the characters get what they deserve, good prevails over evil, true love prevails, and the game of golf remains untarnished. This is a "must read" for any golfer who, like me, is addicted to the game and the multitude of life lessons that it continually offers.

This book is cleverly conceived, multi layered, and well written. As a former touring pro who played in several U.S. Opens, I could identify with the main character and appreciate his lofty dreams. I particularly enjoyed the plot twist throughout the read, especially the unexpected ending.

Very good.

I hope this is seen as a compliment but Scroll Back is certainly on par with any of the Dan Brown novels I've read. The pacing and level of intrigue kept me hooked page after page and I have to admit I found myself wondering 'what if' more times than I can recall. One of the most plausible and entertaining books I have read this year so far.

I found this book to be very interesting and hard to put down as it has a way of constantly puling you into the story. I felt that I was there observing all that was unfolding. In my opinion, this would make a great movie.

Los libros de Fernando Trujillo, al menos para mi, son apuesta segura. Son de esos libros que uno toma y no puede soltar.
El Tomo 2 del testamento del Gris, los revela y solucionan alguna interrogante que nos dejo en el anterior, pero a la vez nos abre la puerta a un sinfín de nuevas incógnitas que nos dejan queriendo mas y mas. Como siempre lo hace Fernando.

Muy bien llevado, la secuencia y la trama como en los anteriores, sólo que me quedé en ascuas, ahora deberé esperar el testamento 3 y el de sombra 2...., pero si que enganchan estas novelas...

me encantó este libro, la forma como se relaciona con los demás de la serie, sin tener que realmente abordarlos, sino tocándolos tangencialmente, como todo se relaciona con todo y aunque da algunos saltos inesperados estos son llenados paulatinamente, y otros quedan a la deriva, seguramente para abordarse en los siguientes libros.

Great Clean, Mystery!!!!

I was at Deseret Book a couple of weeks ago and decided to buy some books on CD since I am always in my car. I am so glad I picked this one up. It was wonderful.

Rick Street started his life out a little rough. He has lived on the street for years, and he is a survivor. He wants to better his life, but doesn't quite know how to go about it.

One night Rick follows another street guy by the name of Slice. Rick is sure Slice is up to no good, and this time he has a young woman with him. Rick follows him, and when he hears screaming coming from a bathroom he goes in armed with a 2x4. Right about the time the police enter the room and take Rick down. They accuse him of aggravated assault and he is put in jail.

Rick's life goes from bad to worse. To his udder delight the judge decides to do a little something different with Rick. Ricks life takes an unexpected turn, and one that could be wonderful if he takes the opportunities that the judge has put before him. He gets assigned a probation/case worker by the name of Miranda. Miranda is suppose help Rick becoming a contributing member of society.

The story just gets more and more interesting. Rick is such a great character, and I cannot even tell you how bite-o-luscious this man is. Just mmmm. Okay, who says that about a street guy? Oh, he is so much more than that! I promise. Just read and you will understand how fabulous he is.

Rick's life is full of surprises. Some good, and some not so good. Rick's story is so wonderful to follow. It's full of twist and turns. It kept me on my "drivers" seat the whole time. It was hard to exit the car and turn the CD's off. My kid complained every time because they couldn't watch a movie...hehehe! Poor spoiled children. hehe.

This book took so many different turns, it was awesome. Once you think you have something figured out, another twist is thrown in. The way it all comes together was A MAY ZING.

I don't want to give anything away, but if you like mystery, watching someone come into themselves, love, family. You will like this book. It's so fantastic.
