From Booklist
Retired American schoolteacher Dorothy Martin and her husband, former chief constable Alan Nesbitt, leave their home in England for an adventure in Scotland. A friend has invited them to visit the excavation of a Stone Age city. Dorothy, in particular, is excited to see these ancient ruins—older than Stonehenge—but, as regular series readers know, where Dorothy goes, murder is soon to follow. And when the wealthy American man who’s funding the dig dies, what first appears to be accidental circumstances soon looks like murder. Dorothy and Alan’s friend, who’s never hidden his dislike for the dead man, could be the prime suspects. Another solid mystery anchored by a pair of likable protagonists and a supporting cast of characters who would feel right at home in an Agatha Christie mystery. Series fans will be delighted. --David Pitt

Dorothy and Alan in Scotland!
By J. Harper
I chose to read this book because I have enjoyed Jeanne M. Dams past books with Dorothy Martin. For one thing, the books don't seem a repeat of the past ones as some books do in a serial writings. Plus, I love how the the relationship between Dorothy and her second husband Alan grows. This is a great series about people over 60, gives one hope that retirement won't be dull! This was a good read for me.

Can't write them fast enough....
By CynthiaLR
Dorothy Martin is one of those characters one would like to befriend in real life. Barring that, sharing her fictional adventures has to suffice, the only problem is Jeanne M. Dams can't write this series fast enough for me. I constantly check to see if Dorothy has a new volume coming and then preorder it immediately. With Amazon I know the book will arrive on the date of publication and warn my husband there will be no reaching me for I'll be on an adventure with Dorothy. This latest book did not disappoint and, again, I read it in one sitting. Now? Well, now I'm back to checking when the next installment is due! Lovers of cozy mysteries, this is a series just for you.

Or at least it was before they came for me. Before they locked me in a padded cell. Before I escaped. And before everything I thought I knew came crashing to pieces.
The Tumultus has me. The Pontifex wants me. And I don’t know who to believe anymore.
Who am I? Whose side am I on? Will I survive any of this?

Violet Blake | meet Chloe Winter
By pooled ink Reviews
pooled ink Reviews:

I was really getting in stride with the whole Violet Blake storyline and was searching to finish that journey before diving down someone else’s.
Although I will say that reading Chloe’s story and getting a first person look at what really went down that fateful day was fascinating.

Still spitting action at break-neck speed The Remembrance of Violet Blake is a dark shred of the horror that follows in Rebekah’s predatory wake.

After Army Ranger trained soldier of fortune Jake Fonko barely survives a trip to Calcutta, he returns to his Malibu home to recover—only to find an old CIA associate knocking at his door. Despite previous problems when working with the agency, Jake accepts the simple mission after being bribed and blackmailed, agreeing to put the communist rebels out of commission. Intrigue in the Philippines. Read this for the story.
By Charles DiSogra
I keep knocking off these Fonko stories as they come up. This is mostly because I enjoy the true historical events and the somewhat innocent way in which our lead character most typically is sucked into the maelstrom of foreign political intrigue. Is he shaping the outcome or just being flushed along and providing a little help to what we know now to have been the factual eventualities? Either way, the characters are a hoot and the historical developments enlightening. We’ll leave insight to the academic types. The rather dull-edged blunt interventions by our intelligence community (a fact seen with clarity by the ones who are asked to pull triggers) leaves me wondering how we’ve been able to not implode under the weight of our own ineptitude in international affairs. Or so the author wants us to see. As usual, power, greed, and sex move nations and precipitate tragedies for humanity. Fonko maneuvers through all this and somehow, to the reader’s delight, survives. To see all this unfold in the Philippines in the collapse of the Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos world and find Fonko in the middle of it all is a fun ride. After reading this book, you will certainly come away more informed as well as entertained.

Another fascinating account of Fonko's adventures
By Gene Gilbert
Another great page turner with Fonko using his wits and intelligence more than his Ranger trained physical skills. After surviving a misadventure in India that almost ends his game, he ends up in the Philippines on a mission involving the upcoming election. As with previous Fonko stories, along with an adventure there is very interesting background on a particular place and time. The author may fling some b.s., but his history of the Marcos rule in the mid 1980's is well written and credible. An end note gives fans an opportunity to be notified when the next Fonko story is available so the author has more stories to tell-I am looking forward to the next one .

The Fonko series creates a vivid panorama of recent history ...
By Norma J Anderson
The Fonko series creates a vivid panorama of recent history that features American involvement in hot spots all over the world. Professor Pflingger does prodigious research to create an unassailable background for stories filled with action and and adventure that star Jake Fonko, as he embeds himself deeply in stories that carry the reader right along with him. The continuity from book to book makes this a series you'll want to read from start to finish, to savor the ways in which Jake continues to get in and out of trouble, along with his evolving cast of unforgettable characters.

Review
I actually wanted to cry at some points of the story. I really enjoyed this book and didn't want to put it down. It's very sad when people hurt children but it's even more sad to know that it happens so much in real life. Jody Wheeler. The main characters are so brilliant and I love how Lorne gets through anything that life throws at her. Excellent read can't wait to read more. Amanda Brock.

Great book. No hesitation recommending this, deserves every one of the five stars and more!!!! Have read all the other books in the series and there is only one word to describe them "BRILLIANT" Mrs H McConnell This was another excellent book in the series, couldn't put it down. Would highly recommend it. Gripping stories but also great character background stories. Joanna

A must read!
By Miss K. Jenkins
I could not put this book down.

This book is beautifully written and kept my interest throughout. I wanted to know what was going on with the case Lorne was working on, and wanted to know more about the new characters. I feel that Mel Comley balanced this perfectly.

I have to admit, at first I was a little apprehensive, due to my love for Lorne's last partner.. but her new partner is just as awesome! I feel that she compliments Lorne's personality well.

Foul Justice kept me kept me guessing throughout. There were parts where I laughed, and even cried! The ending was absolutely superb and a truly fitting end for our lovable detective!

It deeply saddens me that this book is the last in a series that has affected my so deeply; I truly feel as if I know the characters and am sad to say goodbye to them. I wish Mel the best in all her future endeavors and will always be silently wishing to see Lorne and the gang again!

Foul Justice is the fourth book in the DI Lorne ...
By sarah hardy
Foul Justice is the fourth book in the DI Lorne Simpkins series.

This book sees Lorne returning back to work after having a two year break. Her first case back is to find the criminals behind an horrific robbery where two young children were brutally murdered. Not only does she have her work cut out with a challenging case she has the added worry of Tony, the man in her life, being sent on a dangerous mission. To top it all off she also has a new partner at work, Katy, who to start with Lorne struggles to warm to.

The first chapter had me hooked straight away and I devoured Foul Justice in one afternoon. The author doesn't hold any punches with this book, from the very first chapter all the way through and by the end I felt I'd done a round with Rocky Balboa. She certainly knows how to shock and thrill her readers.

To start with I didn't really like Katy, Lorne's new partner but it wasn't long before I started to change my mind. I enjoyed seeing their partnership grow into them becoming friends and I look forward to reading more of this relationship through out the course of the series.

Though it is quite a happy ending for Lorne and Tony in this book, due to certain events it did leave me wondering what the future holds for the loved up couple and what the future has in store for them.

Another great book in the series and can't wait to read the next one.

Lorne is back!
By Sibel Hodge
The 4th book in the series sees Lorne rejoining the Met and investigating a series of brutal robberies/murders. Not only has she got a new job and a serious case to deal with, she's also worrying about her fiance, Tony, who's sent on a secret MI6 mission, 2 weeks before their wedding.

The plot and writing will draw you in instantly, and I think this is probably my favourite of the Justice series. I hope she'll be making a come back in the future! If you're looking for a fab fast-paced thriller, look no further.

Not many jobs are for life. Jeff Parsons was angry, angry enough to kill. A reliable, dependable, and mostly honest public servant, Jeff expected to ride the government gravy train undisturbed until his retirement in 2025. On Friday March 2, 2012, Jeff’s train derailed; a confidential email revealed that Jeff’s boss, under the guise of government-wide cut backs, planned to ‘let Jeff go’ so they could use the savings to reward and promote their sycophant lackeys and painted whore. Unemployment at fifty would destroy Jeff‘s life and threaten the security and health of his children. That was not acceptable. Desperate and determined, Jeff analysed the problem; six deaths in seven days ought to be enough. All he needed was a killer.

About the Author
Colin Knight was born in Manchester, England to working class parents – his father painted houses and drove delivery trucks; his mother worked in a retirement home. He and his four siblings shared a small three-bedroom house on an unremarkable city owned housing estate ten miles from the city centre. From seven to sixteen years old, he held newspaper and milk delivery jobs, which he did, before school. Educated to state standards, at an experimental public high-school for boys, Colin graduated at sixteen with minimum credentials. At eighteen, he joined an American international company as a general office helper. By twenty-three Colin had developed an aptitude for product management and marketing. His career with the American company provided work assignments in Italy and Switzerland, as well as travel to many European countries. In 1987, Colin immigrated to Canada to work for a distributor of the American company. In 1991, he took a chance and quit work to attend university. By 1997, Colin had obtained a BA Honors Degree in Political Science, and a MA Degree in International Relations. In 1999, after a brief return to the private sector, Colin joined the Canadian Federal Government. During his fifteen-year government career, Colin worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Canadian International Development Agency, the Public Safety Department, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and most recently, he was a Senior Policy Analyst in the Federal Privy Council Office. Government work and assignments took Colin to Europe, Asia, Latin America and the US. Colin retired from the government in 2014 to focus on family, writing and life. Colin lives in Ottawa, Canada with his wife and their three children. In between housework, groceries, shuttling children and general family support, Colin is working on his next novel. Squash, soccer, learning to play the guitar, and quality beer relieve stress and writers block.

Colin Knight is a master at bringing fiction as close as possible to the reader's life
By Mario Reinhardt
Colin Knight is a master at creating unique atmospheres, seamlessly going from a police interrogation room, to a government office, to various places where his characters live. His intimate knowledge of office life and his ability to discern fundamental dynamics at play allow him to accurately depict some of the worst aspects of Canada’s Public Service. This, added to his detailed description of the Ottawa region, makes the story realistic, which leaves a strong impression when an apparently regular government analyst starts killing his colleagues one at a time.

This novel is as close to a government employee’s day to day reality as fiction can get. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is familiar with the Public Service or office dynamics in general. I am certain it will not leave you indifferent.

By Amazon Reader
In this, his second novel, Knight brings his intimate knowledge of the Canadian Public Service and, in particular, the Intelligence Secretariat into play and paints a suspenseful story of detailed planning and murder. The reader is led through a maze of police interrogation, flashbacks, and thought processes to reach an unexpected conclusion. Hard to put down once started, the reader starts every chapter with the anticipation that the mystery will unravel and the murderer brought to justice. I look forward to his next novel.

even though you know almost from the start who the murderer is you wont be able to turn the pages quick enough to find out if he gets caught. i liked the way the story was told with the "alive" and "dead" sections for each victim. the story moved at a fast pace. I also enjoyed reading about the ins and outs of the Canadian Govt. This author knows his sh*t. I am really looking forward to his next book.

The Devil's Right Hand (Jack Keller), by J.D. Rhoades

The critically-acclaimed debut novel by J.D. Rhoades, and the introduction of iconic bounty hunter Jack Keller. Keller is a man tormented by the nightmares he's had ever since a disastrous tour in Desert Storm. Destroyed by his experience, Keller now makes his living tracking bailjumpers for H&H, a North Carolina bail bonds company run by a reclusive, beautiful, and horribly scarred woman named Angela. In truth, Keller doesn't work bail enforcement to live, he lives to work: the only thing that breaks through the numbness is the thrill of the hunt, the sound of gunfire, the high that comes with each successful takedown.

When H&H is required to track down a lifelong loser for jumping bail on a routine burglary collar, Keller has no idea how gravely events are about to spiral out of his control. He chases his quarry straight into the center of a firestorm involving a pair of local Indians blinded by rage and hell-bent to avenge their father's murder. Along the way they encounter a vicious North Carolina cop with a mean streak and very few moral boundaries. Not to mention the cop's beautiful partner Marie, caught between a newfound desire for the just-on-the-edge-of-the-law Jack Keller and her loyalty to a police department with a serious ethics problem.

These people, each hurtling forward on their own individual trajectories of self-destruction, begin to intersect each other's lives in a series of volatile, escalating, and deadly events. Furiously paced and filled with unforgettable, masterfully drawn characters destined to meet in a bloody showdown which most of them will not survive, The Devil's Right Hand is a stylish, razor-edged debut novel that redefines the rules of the Southern thriller.

From Publishers Weekly
Loaded with testosterone and high-caliber weapons, Rhoades's hard-boiled debut lurches from one bloody gun battle to another in the streets and back alleys of Fayetteville, N.C., as a bounty hunter finds himself drawing highly unwelcome attention. When dim-witted cousins DeWayne and Leonard kill an old Lumbee Indian during their first armed robbery, they get a load of trouble along with the cash. Raymond, one of the victim's sons and a vicious local crime boss, vows to kill everyone involved with his father's death. Caught in between is Jack Keller, a bail bondsman's enforcer; he's after DeWayne for skipping out on his breaking and entering bail. A Gulf War veteran tormented by guilt over the deaths of his squad members in a friendly fire incident, Jack must now deal with the two armed robbers, crazed Raymond and his gang of assorted Colombian gunmen, and sadistic cops who mistakenly think he's the cause of all the mayhem. Resourceful and determined, Jack happily lays out a few bad guys himself, but he's annoyed that everybody wants to kill him, too. He is arrested, beaten up, shot at and pursued, making miraculous escapes each time in the best pulp fiction tradition. Add spectacular car chases, kidnapping, torture, carjacking, a dozen killings and lukewarm sex scenes, and this gritty novel has everything it needs except for suspense, mystery and likable characters.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Rhoades slaps this supercharged crime-fiction debut into overdrive in the first paragraph and never lets up through nearly 300 pages of nonstop action. It starts with a simple armed robbery in which two dumb and dumber ex-cons, Leonard and DeWayne, set out to steal the weekly payroll from an elderly Native American who owns a construction company. It quickly goes wrong, however, and the owner is killed. Meanwhile, bounty hunter Jack Keller, a Gulf War vet with a head full of nightmares, is already tracking bail-jumper DeWayne. He'll have to hurry, though, if he hopes to find his quarry before the dead man's son, a drug dealer who is every bit as violent and considerably crazier than the killers he tracks. Throw in a couple of psycho cops with a thing about bounty hunters, and you have the narrative equivalent of a string of homemade bombs timed to explode at random along the Arkansas back roads. Like Stephen Hunter's Dirty White Boys, however, this is not simply a car-chase-with-fireworks novel; Rhoades builds his rampaging white boys from the ground up, complete with believable backstory and humanizing shots of Pulp Fiction-like humor. Keller is a definite keeper, the kind of flawed noir hero that women want to nurse, cops want to bust, and bad guys want to hurt. There's a formula at work here, of course, but Rhoades never gives us time to feel manipulated. More Keller, please, and soon. Bill Ott

Review
"Rhoades slaps this supercharged crime-fiction debut into overdrive in the first paragraph and never lets up through nearly 300 pages of non-stop action."--Booklist (starred review)

"A fine example of redneck noir. Nicely crafted…if you hail from certain dark corners of the sunny South, it's the next best thing to a trip home."--Washington Post

"Enjoyable…Rhoades seems to have observed and remembered all the seedy details of life outside the centers of urban and suburban life as we know it. Nobody could totally invent this stuff."--Chicago Tribune

"The Devil's Right Hand blasts right out of the chute and keeps up the pace until the final paragraph. Steeped in Southern sense of place, the reader can feel the heat and humidity and smell the cordite hanging in the air. J.D. Rhoades writes action as well as anybody in the business, and bail bondsman Jack Keller is a winner."--C.J. Box, author of Trophy Hunt

"Spare, tense and violent, this is a debut that will turn other writers green with envy. Jack Keller is a sure-fire star of the new generation of hard-boiled heroes."--Stephen Booth, author of Blind to the Bones

"Riveting as the rack of a sawn-off shotgun, The Devil's Right Hand is a novel of pace and power, locked and loaded from the start. Bail enforcer Jack Keller, a damaged gulf war veteran, moves the heart in unexpected ways. Keller's quarry Raymond, a drug dealer bent on revenge, pledges 'no more water, but the fire next time'--and it's the fire we get on almost every page of a book that is positively aflame with action. Let's hope that J.D. Rhoades and Jack Keller are due to deliver more of the fire and soon."--Ken Bruen, author of The Guards

The unconventional adventures of bounty hunter Jack Keller
By Amazon Customer
Standing at the center of this bruising novel is the relentless bounty hunter Jack Keller, a Gulf war veteran struggling with post-traumatic stress syndrome. Keller is pursuing DeWayne Puryear, who skipped bail on a lesser charge shortly before killing Raymond and John Lee Oxendine's father during a robbery. Accompanied by his cousin Leonard, DeWayne goes on the lam. Unfortunately for them, however, they've incurred the wrath of the resourceful and tenacious Oxendine brothers, who seek revenge for their father's murder.

The hapless robbers take refuge in the home of DeWayne's sister Crystal, proceeding to squander most of the robbery money on drugs. One evening, Leonard answers the doorbell to find the Oxendines waiting outside. Right on the Oxendines' heels is Keller, who has also tracked the Puryears to their hideout. A vicious firefight breaks out, forever altering the lives of those involved. The remainder of the novel deals with the surviving parties' dogged pursuit of one another, some seeking a payday, others revenge. The chase is not without its interesting detours; the consequences and the final death toll won't become apparent until the final pages.

Rhoades knows how to keep an audience's attention, never stinting on the well-choreographed action. Surprising for a novel that relies so much on explosive set pieces, however, is that it doesn't neglect character development; each player is profoundly affected by the violence that surrounds them. The winning mix of pulse pounding action and intriguing central characters will have readers anxiously anticipating the author's next offering.

Fast-paced action
By Jerry Saperstein
Jack Keller is a bounty hunter. He's looking for a bail jumper. The bail jumper, not exactly a bright bulb, intends to rob an old man . . . and ends up murdering him along with his dim-witted cousin.

Keller has some psychological baggage of his own, which actually gets in the way of the story at times.

But Keller's pursuit of the criminals is what makes the novel a page turner. The action is fast, furious and plausible for the most part. On the whole, a fun book.

The intense beginning of a series: The Devil's Right Hand
By Kevin Tipple
Haunted by a nightmarish experience in Desert Storm and suffering post-traumatic stress disorder, Jack Keller is barely alive. Physically alive is one thing but his emotional life and his ability to connect with others is in strong jeopardy. For this self imposed loner and societal outcast, the only thing that keeps him going is the thrill of the hunt which results in the ultimate capture of his target. Work as a bounty hunter for H&H, a North Carolina bail bonds company keeps him working and alive, but it isn't much of a life, as he has not much passion for anything else. Other than Angela, the enigmatic owner of H&H who has her own very heavy load of emotional baggage and isn't yet ready to cross that line from employer to lover with Jack Keller.

Keller's personal life begins to change in an unlikely way when he goes on the hunt for a habitual criminal, Dewayne, whose only ability is incredible stupidity in regards to his crimes and extreme violence. Stupidity that most recently caused Dewayne to kill an elderly man in the course of robbing him for a small cash payroll of a few thousand dollars. Stupidity that caused the son's of the deceased man, Raymond and John Lee, to begin their own violent hunt for Dewayne. Both the sons and Keller have a good idea where Dewayne is headed. Keller needs him alive so that he can take care of the bond money because the Old West adage of bring them back dead or alive no longer works. Raymond and John Lee want Dewayne dead and don't care who gets hurt in the process.

Throw in a violent out of control cop, a love interest in an unlikely place, and a few other story ingredients and the result is a fast paced intense read from start to finish. Told through constantly shifting point of view, this tale is part mystery, part thriller, and all intense. The story unravels before the reader's eyes with sufficient plot twists and turns to keep one guessing to the very last page. Through it all is the complex and multi-faceted character of Jack Keller, a man prone to violence who might like it just a little too much but at the same time is aware not only of his faults, but that sometimes, extreme violence is the only answer.

His ex-wife's landscaping business had brought her to the doorstep of one of the most devious serial murderers in Luke's career. A knot tightened in his gut as he pulled in front of her small redbrick town house in a North Dallas suburb, the one they'd shared, and parked his truck.

An emotion he refused to acknowledge kept him from opening the door and stepping into the frigid night. How many times had he wished he still lived in that house after he'd come home from active duty a wreck? How many times had he prayed he could go back and change the past since then? How many times had he missed the feel of her long silky legs wrapped around him, welcoming him home? Too many.

Hell, he wasn't there for a reunion. She was in jeopardy, and his job was to protect society from national-security threats and major criminals. Keeping her safe was the least he could do after the way he'd hurt her.

He stepped into the crisp evening air.

A young detective with a thick build and sun-worn face approached. "Evening, Special Agent Campbell. Not sure if you remember me, but I worked the Martin crime scene earlier."

"Detective Wells. Thank you. I appreciate the call." Luke shook the outstretched hand in front of him.

"I wouldn't normally bother you with something like this. My boss thought you'd be interested."

The young guy reported to Detective Garcia. Garcia's judgment was dead-on. "What do you have?"

He waved another detective over. "This is Detective Reyes."

Luke shook hands with the detective.

"Show him what was taped to Ms. Davis's window earlier," Detective Wells said.

The officer used tongs to hold out a standard-size piece of white paper. The words I hope you enjoy your dance with the Devil. Be in touch soon, Rob were handwritten.

"Whoever wrote this has good penmanship." Luke noticed. He took note of the capitalization of the word Devil. The tension between his shoulder blades balled and tightened as he reread the name. His killer, Ravishing Rob, never left a clue as to whom he would target next. If this was him, why would he change his M.O.?

One reason came to mind. Anger. Rob was meticulous. Julie had interrupted his ritual killing, which he'd described as more of a turn-on than sex. That might be enough to trigger a variation.

Luke couldn't ignore another possibility. This could be a copycat. Julie's picture had been splashed all over the news and internet.

Then again, Julie had black hair just like all Rob's targets.

He examined the neat print. Cursive would give more clues to Rob's personality. With his high IQ he was smart enough to know that, too, which made the capitalization of Devil even more poignant. "Whoever wrote this took his time."

Luke pulled an evidence bag from his glove box and pointed at the note. "I'll send this up for analysis." The detectives nodded.

"Can you spare one of your uniformed men for the night? I'd like someone to keep watch on the alley behind her house."

"Sure thing," Detective Wells said. "I made some notes after interviewing Ms. Davis. Do you want to take a look?"

"Absolutely." Luke studied the page. He focused on the word boyfriend. The knot tightened in his gut. The thought of another man's arms wrapped around Julie ignited his possessive instincts. He still wanted her, needed her. Those selfish emotions had caused him to stay at the town house to be near her when he'd returned from Iraq a broken man. The front-row seat he'd had to her pain—the hell he'd caused—when he pushed her away day after day had forced him to man up and leave before he permanently damaged her. Intelligent and beautiful, she deserved so much more than him. He glanced up at the detectives who were waiting for his response to the report. Not wanting to give away his bone-deep reaction to her, he skimmed the rest and handed it back. "Good information. Send my office a copy of the report when it's filed."

Detective Wells gave a satisfied smile. "I'll keep a man outside tonight. Let me know if you need anything else."

"Will do." Luke turned and walked toward the house. A thought stopped him at the base of the stairs. What if she wasn't alone?

The detective's notes said she'd been dating a dentist on and off. Was he here?

Davis had been her maiden name, which meant she was still single. Even so, she might be on with the dentist again. After the day she'd had, he might be there with her in Luke's house. Old house, he corrected, ignoring the all-too-real tug of emotion at seeing the place again.

Taking the couple of steps to her porch in quick strides, he clenched his fists.

The thought of Ravishing Rob targeting Julie didn't do good things to Luke's head. He knocked on the door and his chest squeezed as he thought about seeing her again.

The solid hunk of wood swung open, and suddenly, there she was, his ideal combination of beauty and grace, staring at him with a shocked look on her face. He could see those long legs where her bathrobe split, her taut hips where the robe cinched. A hunger roared from deep within him. The reality of why he was there chased it away.

Her amber eyes stood out against pale skin. Even red-rimmed and puffy, their russet-coppery tint was every bit as beautiful as it had been the last time he'd seen her. Her shoulder-length hair was still inky black. His fingers itched to get lost in that curly abyss again. Muscle memory, he decided. Besides, the frown on her face and stress in her eyes said he was the last person she wanted to see.

Under the circumstances, he was her best bet.

She opened her mouth to speak, but her ringtone sounded. "Dammit. Hang on."

Bad sign. She only cursed when she was hanging on by a thread.

"May I?" He motioned for permission to enter.

Her gaze narrowed, but then she nodded and turned her back to him. She spoke directly into the phone. "I'm okay. No. I promise. You don't need to come over right now. I'll see you when you get off work."

Was she talking to her boyfriend? The last word stuck. Tasted bitter as hell, too.

One step inside and he almost lost his footing. A wave of nostalgia slammed into him. The furniture was in exactly the same spot as when he'd left. The coffee-colored leather sofa against the wall to his right. The flat-screen directly across from it mounted on the wall to his left. He could see all the way to the back door from where he stood. Same black pedestal dining table with avocado-green chairs tucked around it. The place looked completely untouched, except all the pictures of the two of them had been removed. She'd probably enjoyed stomping on the frames.

The town house might've looked the same, but it had a different air. Funny how out of place he felt in what used to be his own home.

He folded his arms, parted his feet in an athletic stance and stood next to the door. He wasn't there for a reunion. This was business. And no matter how much Julie looked as if she'd rather crawl out of her skin than be in the same room with him, he had a job to do.

She closed the call and whirled around on him, still wearing her angry expression. There was something else in her eyes there, too. Hurt? "Why did they send you?"

"I've been tracking this guy for the past two years. He's my case." He intentionally withheld the part about Ravishing Rob being the most ruthless killer Luke had come across so far in his FBI career.

Her eyes narrowed to such slits he couldn't figure out if she could see him anymore. Then again, she probably wanted to block him out altogether, and he couldn't blame her. She'd pleaded with him to stay, but he couldn't stand watching her pain when he had no way to heal either one of them.

With all the daggers shooting from her eyes, he couldn't tell if she was using anger to mask other emotions. Hurt? Fear? Regret?

"There's no one else they could've sent?" The hollow sound in her voice practically echoed.

"I'm afraid not."

"So the note's from him? You're sure?"

"I need to get a little more information from you to help me decide." Even though she'd already given her account to police and he'd read the jacket, he needed to hear her words. He needed to know what she thought she saw. Maybe she'd remember something that could help put this monster away or help Luke figure out if it was a copycat. "Tell me what happened when you arrived at the scene of the murder this morning."

She shivered, looked lost and alone. "My client Annie Martin wanted to meet with me to discuss landscaping after her new pool was installed. I brought a rendering with me and planned to give my presentation. It was a big project that would start in the spring, so I broke all the planting down into zones." She glanced up at him curiously as if she realized he didn't know the first thing about plants or landscaping, or care. "Sorry, I'm babbling. I'm sure you didn't come here to talk about the details of my business."

"I did," he said quickly. He covered a crime scene the same way, broke it down on a grid. "I want to hear everything even if you don't think it's important. You never know what might spark a memory. Something you didn't think of before when you talked to the police." His hopes she'd be more comfortable talking to him had diminished the second he saw her. He wanted to ask her how she was doing, but decided not to, even though he found he still really wanted to know, needed to know. He'd left things broken between them, and thoughts of the sadness in her eyes every time she'd looked at him still haunted him. Outside of this case, he had no right to know anything about her. Why was he already reminding himself of the fact?

"As soon as I pulled up to her house, I heard a noise. Like a muffled cry or something. I couldn't make it out for sure. She'd asked me to come around back in case she was with contractors for the pool, so I ran to make sure she was okay. I thought maybe she tripped or was hurt. But there was no one out there. She screamed again and I ran to the front door. Someone bolted from around the side of the house about the same time. He killed her, didn't he?"

He locked gazes with her and wished like anything he could protect her from the truth. He felt pained that she'd had to witness this and his heart went out to her. "Yes. You get a good look at him?"

"No." She hugged her arms to her body. "I didn't see anything. By then I heard an awful sound coming from inside. Sounded like an animal dying." She shivered.

He pulled out a pad and scribbled notes. Not that he needed a piece of paper to remember the details of their conversation. His memory was sharper than a switchblade. He needed something to look at besides her fearful eyes. Old instinct kicked in and he wanted to maim the person who'd made her feel that way, offer comfort she would certainly reject. "What happened next?"

"You want to sit down?" She moved to the couch and sat on the edge. She clasped her hands together and rocked back and forth. "It was bad, Luke."

The sound of his name rolling off her tongue was a bitter reminder of the comfort and connection he hadn't felt in a long time. He took a seat next to her but not too close.

Tears spilled down her cheeks. "I don't want to think about it again, let alone say the words out loud."

"I know how hard this is." Every muscle in his body tightened from wanting to reach out and comfort her. He didn't want to press further, but the information he gained could mean saving her life. "It's important you tell me everything. Do you want a cup of tea or something?" He made a move to stand.

"No. I'm fine." The uncertainty in her words made him freeze.

"Anything else you can give me might save another woman from going through this."

"We both know he's going to come after me next." Her voice shook with terror.

"I'm not certain it's him yet. Besides, I'll catch him first."

The suggestion of depending on him for anything after the way he'd hurt her set her eyes to infernos. "I didn't ask you to come."

"This is my territory. My guy. I know him better than anyone else."

"I didn't even know you were FBI." The exasperation in her voice made him clench his fists involuntarily.

"I didn't think it was appropriate to send you Christmas cards after your lawyer sent me papers." It was a low blow and he regretted saying the words as soon as they passed his lips. After all, he'd been the one to leave and force the divorce issue.

She looked straight through him. "I lost track of you after…"

This wasn't the time to talk about their past. It complicated the situation. He was professional enough to look beyond shared history and concentrate on doing his job. He focused his gaze on the opened laptop on the coffee table. There was a picture of Julie at the crime scene beneath the banner Breaking News. Damn. Another reminder that she'd been placed right there for the killer or any other lunatic to see.

The last time the local newspaper printed a story with the headline The Metroplex Murderer Strikes Again, Rob went off. He'd left a message on Luke's cell complaining about how common that made him seem. Luke still hadn't figured out how the man got his number. The man calling himself Ravishing Rob—someone who captivated and then decapitated—had done his research. Efforts to trace the call were futile. He'd used a burn phone. Rob was thorough. He also knew how to play the media.

Reporters had their uses. In this case, they might've issued Julie a death warrant. "You said earlier you didn't get a good look at him. Any idea as to general information like height? Build? Race?"

She shook her head. "I was so horrified. The whole thing shocked me. One minute I was planning to meet a client, like usual, and then I thought the worst-case scenario was that I'd walked into a robbery in progress. The next thing I know, I'm staring at a person whose throat had been slit. I'll never forget her eyes, pleading." She shivered again and tears streamed down her cheeks.

Luke had to grip the pencil tighter to stop himself from wiping them away. He didn't like seeing her cry. He'd seen those tears enough for a lifetime. If it didn't mean saving her life, he'd stop questioning. "When did you find the note?"

"This evening. I'd just gotten home from spending the day at the police station answering questions."

good suspense

4 STARS

Good suspense! Lots of good police work. Some good humor, couple of love scenes, violence of serial killer. Deals with some tough subjects, serial killer, divorced couple, PTSD. Good plot. Lots of drama, action , emotional situations. Things seem to calm down and than something else happens.

FBI Agent Luke Campbell has been working a serial killer case when the next victim is witness and his ex-wife. Luke will do anything to save Julie.

Julie Campbell walked in on a serial killer. She did not see him. Now he is going to kill her his notes say. The FBI sent her ex-husband to take her statement. She still loves him.

Can Luke stop the killer before he comes for Julie.

Luke came back from war with PSTD. He walked out on Julie he could not handle it. Now back with Julie in his life his PTSD is rearing its head again. Luke is afraid to leave Julie alone in a safe house and takes her with him to find the killer.

This can and does stand alone. But it would be nice to read the whole series together..

The setting is Texas.

I did not put the book down till I finished reading it. Fast good read.

I was given this ebook from Net Galley and Harlequin. In return I agreed to give Gut Instinct a honest review.

Full of action, this fast paced novel with intimate moments is a fun read.
By b00k r3vi3ws
Julie Davis had tried her best to help her husband when he had returned from Iraq with PTSD. But Luke had shut her out and then walked out on their marriage. The divorce had left her distraught but she had slowly recovered from that loss by focusing all her energy into her business. But when her work takes her to cross paths with a serial killer and brings back Luke in her life, her life is upturned once again. Pursued by the serial killer, she has only Luke to depend on. Will the closeness rekindle her suppressed love for Luke or will the hurt of his desertion take over?

Luke Campbell was very much aware of the fact that he had taken the coward’s way out when he had walked out on Julie instead of working on his problems together. Now with Ravishing Rob, a serial killer who turns murder into art, on her trail – Luke will do anything to keep Julie safe. But their shared past complicates things as Luke defies FBI regulations to keep her with him and ensure her safety. With a life on the line, will Luke finally admit to what’s in his heart?

Barb Han has created two amazing characters in Julie and Luke. Luke has served a number of years in the army and after struggling and coping with PTSD, he joins the FBI. If that isn’t the sign of a strong man, I do not know what is. He is very much aware of his mistakes and is prepared to do anything to not repeat them. Julie on the other hand matches Luke with her strength. It is hard enough to be a military wife, but to have her husband return with PTSD and then walk out on her… she had done well for herself. And even under life threatening situations, she doesn’t hang back and let Luke do all the work. She isn’t stubborn and is very caring and loveable.
The plot is not as straight forward as one expects from a romance novel. The author has handled the mystery/intrigue part quite well. With simple language, attention to details and detailed description of events, the author has done a great job of creating a story that indulges its readers on many fronts.

Chilling, page-turning storyline. Touching romance
By Hope This Helps
Rating: 4.0 stars. _Some graphic sexual content.
Note: Stand alone read. 2nd in The Campbells of Creek Bend series.

GOOD READ! Well written action-packed thriller, smart characters, strong band of brothers theme, great secondary cast, menacing psycho, and an engaging second-chance romance. HOWEVER, some elements of the plot are overly contrived; it is clearly not police procedure to take the intended victim along during a crime investigation, nor is it believable that the villain overpowers several police officers so easily. But this detracts only slightly from the storyline.

THE STORY reunites now FBI agent Luke Campbell with his ex-wife Julie Davis (Campbell). Years earlier, Luke returned home from the Iraq war, bitter, withdrawn, and suffering from PTSD. Rather than seek professional help or share his painful war experiences with his wife, Julie, he simply abandoned their marriage and left.

As the story unfolds, Luke has succeeded in getting his life back together and now leads an FBI task force to identify and capture Ravishing Rob, a serial killer who ritualistically tortures and decapitates his victims. He is stunned when he learns Rob's latest target is the one woman he will do anything to protect, Julie, the-love-of-his-life. As the danger escalates, both Luke and Julie realize their love is still strong and more than anything, they want to stop Rob, and get a second chance to build a future together.

OVERALL. Compelling, action-packed thriller, with smart, focused characters. The CAMPBELLS OF CREEK BEND series includes, Witness Protection, Gut Instinct, and Hard Target.

You may also enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, and E. Palfrey. For good mystery/suspense writers you might try J. D. Robb, D. Stabenow, Gayle Wilson, Amanda Stevens, or Julie Miller.
