WILLOW ~ Book I

What exists beyond the visible has been a secret to the mortal world for centuries, but all that is about to change ~

Haunted by a dark premonition during the day, and fighting off a devilish Phantom in her dreams by night, Willow feels an unsettling shift in her world. A few weeks after her nineteenth birthday she drops out of college and moves back to her father’s sprawling ranch overlooking the brooding Oregon coast ready to confront the dark forces that hound her.

He was a total stranger, ridiculously hot and all business as he stood on Willow’s front porch in the middle of the night refusing to go away. She’d have to be a fool to answer the door! But, there was something so familiar about him, something that drew her in. Opening the door suddenly became as necessary as it was deadly – like breathing under water.

His name was Jonathan, last name inconsequential, and don’t expect him to tell you anything else either! He was a mystery, his “people” protected by a sacred code of law, his true motives undisclosed. As compelling as he was detached, all Willow knew for sure was that he’d come to protect her. She only hoped his services included protection from the Phantom who’d stepped out of her nightmares and now manifested in real life!

But when Jonathan fails to detect the Phantom's attack and Willow nearly loses her life, she can no longer discount the obvious: Jonathan and the Phantom were too much alike; both existing beyond the confines of what was considered normal. They were men as beautiful as they were deadly, eyes flashing with a hint of unearthly lavender, their abilities far beyond human. So why were they messing with her?

Willow determines to uncover the secrets Jonathan hides believing it will dispel the mystery and distance between them. But the closer she gets to the truth, the more she suspects his arrival an elaborate scheme and nothing but a betrayal. Is he the protective guardian he so credibly claims to be, or the very evil that has come to destroy her?

Download WILLOW now and jump into the epic adventure!

The Next Big Book Series!
By Amie
I could not put this book down, it made me feel so happy when I read it and when I couldn't read it I was thinking and dreaming about it. I couldn't wait to finish it to see what happened, but when it came down to it, I held off reading the last 5 pages because I didn't want it to end. Sue is a wonderfully descriptive writer, so much so that I felt like I was Willow, the main character in the book. The plot is so different and refreshing and makes you feel! ...Wow, is all I can say. It made me laugh and cry. I can't wait to read her 2nd book, Crossing. I wouldn't be surprised if we see this on the big screen very soon! I sure hope so cause it would be amazing!

"Again, Figg could easily have finished this fight with just one more good blow...
By Don Kidwell
...and, again, he instead waited for his opponent to recover himself." Figg the "English Killer" becomes Figg the "English Killed" after having the top of his skull stoved in with brain matter exposed, and while all evidence points to his nemesis, James Plummer, not everything is as it appears. Another fine mystery where Ennin-sensei is not so much the focal point of the story, but is still asked to solve the puzzle "Sherlock Holmes-style" as to how Figg met his end.

A spellbinding novel of suspense from New York Times bestselling author James Grippando, in which Miami’s top prosecutor becomes a prime suspect in his wife’s disappearance, which may have a chilling connection to the woman he can’t forget.

Unbelievable was the word for her. Samantha Vine was unbelievably beautiful. It was unbelievable that she’d married me. Even more unbelievable that she was gone . . .

Samantha died too soon. Abe Beckham’s new wife has helped him through the loss, but some say it was a step back to marry Angelina, a love from Abe’s past. Abe doesn’t want to hear it, and through the ups and downs, he’s even managed to remain a star prosecutor at the Miami State Attorney’s Office.

Then everything goes wrong.  A woman’s body is discovered dumped in the Everglades, and Abe is called upon to monitor the investigation. The FBI is tracking a killer in South Florida they call “Cutter” because his brutal methods harken back to Florida’s dark past, when machete-wielding men cut sugarcane by hand in the blazing sun.

But when the feds discover that Abe had a brief encounter with the victim after Samantha’s death, and when Angelina goes missing, the respected attorney finds himself under fire. Suspicion surrounds him. His closest friends, family, professional colleagues, and the media no longer trust his motives. Was Angelina right? Was their marriage not what they’d hoped for because he loved Samantha too much? Or was there another woman . . . and a husband with a dark side who simply wanted his new wife gone?

Review
''Another fine stand-alone from the author of the Jack Swyteck legal thrillers . . . Grippando writes the heck out of this labyrinthine story, keeping us flipping the pages at a frantic pace, trying to figure out what's going on here. Abe is a very well-drawn character - we're not quite sure whether we should like him or not - and somehow Grippando manages to answer all of the story's questions without making the end of the book feel contrived. Very nicely done.'' --Booklist

''Gripping . . . Grippando keeps the tension high.'' --Publishers Weekly

''A stand-alone from the creator of adventurous lawyer Jack Swyteck that plumbs a Miami prosecutor's nightmare when a serial killer strikes a little too close to home . . . Grippando supplies a satisfyingly wild ride through Presumed Innocent territory.'' --Kirkus Reviews

''Cane and Abe is a stunning thriller. Think Gone Girl meets Grisham, then throw in shocking twists and turns that will keep you on edge as you race to the end.'' --Linda Fairstein, New York Times bestselling author

''Everything you crave in a crime novel: a complicated but winning protagonist, a puzzling murder, and the kind of ending that just plain wallops you.'' --Kate White, New York Times bestselling author

''Grippando has been at the top of the legal-thriller ladder for some time.'' --US News & World Report, praise for the author

Florida Sugar - Not so sweet
By plane
Grippando, a south Florida resident presents a stand alone novel involving an indictment of the Sugar growing companies harvesting cane in the mid section of Florida. These companies have been there for many years and have the reputation of being laws unto themselves.
Abe Beckham, a prosecutor for the state of Florida becomes involved with an ongoing investigation seeking a serial killer targeting white women who are married or are dating a black man. At one point in his past Abe had been married to a black woman that was killed by cancer. At the present time he is married to a girl he had been involved with prior to his meeting Samantha Vine, his deceased wife.
The serial killer had left the mutilated bodies of his victims on the cane fields of the Sugar companies. In the novel Grippando incorporates an unofficial history of the horrible conduct of the sugar companies towards the people hired to harvest the cane as cutters. Alleged crimes include putting the workers into debt as soon as they start by charging for basic tools, eatable food and drinkable water, causing these people to become hopelessly indebted to their employers.
The search for the killer proceeds coupled with the sudden disappearance of Abe's wife, Angelina giving rise to the possibility of a copy cat killer This might be a copycat because another victim is found, a black girl, while the others were all white.
In typical Grippando fashion the pace of the story is fast and absorbing with principal characters well sketched out. Like most of his other novels the reader will find him or her self in an all nighter and caught in the action at the start.

Disappointingly flawed work from an author with a great track record
By CintiBonnie
After discovering James Grippando's early novels, I would eagerly await his new releases. Unfortunately, I have not enjoyed his current works anywhere near as well. My biggest issue with Cane and Abe is the plot. The core story line is extremely reminiscent of a popular bestseller that was released 2 years prior. In addition, there were red herrings thrown in that went no where and were not even mentioned when the story wrapped up. As for the characters, I did not think they were well-developed at all, with perhaps the exception of the protagonist. In fact, many of the players acted in unrealistic ways, with little explanation as to motivation. One secondary character with emotional issues became incredibly grating as the story wore on, with multiple examples of the same behavior. As I approached the conclusion of the book (borrowed from the library), I started to wonder if some pages were missing. With less than 10 pages left to go, I felt the quick wrap-up left too many questions hanging. For Grippando fans who still want to read it, I recommend waiting for the mass market paperback.

Absolutely loved it!

5 Stars!

I absolutely loved this book. I simply could not put it down and found myself guess right up until the very end. I have been a huge fan of James Grippando since I read his 2006 novel while on vacation that year. I have read quite a few of his books but I will admit that I have not read all of them at this point. I have yet to be disappointed in any of his work that I have had the chance to read.

Abe Beckham is a prosecuting attorney at the Miami State Attorney's Office. Abe's first wife Samantha died young and Abe is still very involved with her brother, J. T. and her father, Luther. Abe has recently married Angelina and is moving forward in his life. As part of his work, Abe finds himself involved in a murder case that may be part of a string of murders. All of the previous victims have been white women dating black men and the newest victim is a black woman. Are the murders connected? Is it a copycat murder?

Abe and Angelina have hit a rough patch in their marriage. Angelina does not like how involved Abe is with J. T. and Abe's fidelity is in question when it becomes known that he is connected to the latest victim. Angelina goes missing and is feared to be the newest victim. Abe goes from star prosecutor to the main suspect in his wife's disappearance.

The writing in this book is fantastic. It is told mostly from Abe's point of view who I found to be a likable albeit imperfect character. All of the characters felt realistic to me. The pacing of the story was perfect and I found myself having a very difficult time putting it down.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fast paced book full of twists and turns. This newest book from James Grippando is not part of a series so it is a fantastic place to sample this consistently good author's writing. I plan to look for future works from this author and catch up on a few of his past books as well.

About the Author
I'm SA Welsh and I write because the voices in my head keep making me. I love reading and I love letting the characters and stories in my head come to life in a book. I can't function in the morning without a cup of tea and when I'm not writing I'm reading. I have enough books to last me through an apocalypse but don’t ask me to share them unless you are a fellow book worm and know how to treat and appreciate a good book. It is thanks to the writers that inspired me to put myself out there that I became an author and the editors that make sense of my chaos that I keep writing. You can also follow SA on Twitter.

LOVE my shifters
By Amazon Customer
When this book came up for review a few months ago, I had to pass on it. But it never left my mind. So when boss lady said we are doing theme months and we pick, supply our own books I pulled this from my secret sample stash, bought it and snuggled down.
I believe this is my first book by this author, if not one of very few. But as I’ve said before not my first shifter books. LOVE my shifters.
The problem is this one had too many head scratching moments for me to really get into it. We’ve got a model with a head on his shoulders, plus side! A brother/manager that is super worried about a stalker going after the model brother. But once the brother hires Aleksi’s agency, the super worried brother just disappears? And everyone just brushes it off to him finally being able to relax and ‘get some’. We also are given back case info, so I start wondering if I missed a book, is it important. And the major one is catching the stalker. Unless I missed it, that’s kinda glossed over and I’m left wonder.. huh? and then we have an epilogue and it’s explained.
I do like Kale and Aleksi together, I liked that Kale knows the deal for modeling and has a plan. I also like that shifters are known but we still have people that are bias towards them, keeps it real. I was also pleasantly surprised that Aleksi wasn’t pulled into the modeling world w/Kale. As his beauty was mentioned several times. Kept expecting for one of the photo’ops to drag him in. The story was set up for a book 2, and I’ll keep a look out for it.

After reluctantly agreeing to have a bodyguard, Kale Andrews must rely on Aleksi to keep him safe when the stalker escalates to murder in this thrilling erotic m/m paranormal romance. I was completely caught up in the story from the beginning and I certainly think that these sexy shifters promise some thrilling and passionate adventures ahead so I am looking forward to reading the next one.

I liked this one!
By johanna
Don't shoot me, but I really found this a cute little story even if the subject matter is one humongous sabre toothed tiger and a male model who was larger than life. Oh, and there was the stalker who just would not give up.

So Kale Andrews receives not just a disturbing mail from a stalkerish fan, he receives an eye in a box. His brother, who also is his boss and agent, takes the mail as it is, dangerous, and so hires a protection agency staffed by shifters. ..... brakes! yes, this is alternative universe where shape shifters live openly and alongside humans....

As the subject of a stalking, Kale is not really feeling the danger until he meets Aleksi, the six foot ten ginormous hunky hunk of a man who is now his body guard. Although it should scare him, this sabre tooth tiger does not and so makes Aleksi stop to reconsider his initial frustration and think that maybe, Kale is his mate? He's not sure but his tiger is purring....

Thing is, there is the usual primeval cry of MINE! in the claiming thingy, but the story does not follow the formula. The author instead chose to give the two men involved the chance to step back and reconsider their circumstance and take things slowly. They have to make sure. I mean, yeah, I would too if the tiger goes on its hind legs and reach the second floor. Plus, think: smaller man, bigger man with big (make that: massive) parts. But I digress...

Now why did I like this? It's strange but I did find this a cute story and there were a lot of lighthearted parts that sent me to giggle-land. (I am with TracyG. on this one :D) Also, the writing style is so relaxed it was surprising to find I had reached the end.

And wow, that was a beautiful set up if I may say so.

Yes, I am definitely following this series. I am curious now what happens next.

Sometimes, the past can haunt you…

Eighteen years ago, FBI profiler Evelyn Baine's best friend, Cassie Byers, disappeared, the third in a series of unsolved abductions. Only a macabre nursery rhyme was left at the scene, a nursery rhyme that claimed Evelyn was also an intended victim. Now, after all these years of silence, another girl has gone missing in South Carolina, and the Nursery Rhyme Killer is taking credit. But is Cassie's abductor really back, or is there a copycat at work?

Sometimes, the past is best forgotten…

Evelyn has waited eighteen years for a chance to investigate, but when she returns to Rose Bay, she finds a dark side to the seemingly idyllic town. As the place erupts in violence and the kidnapper strikes again, Evelyn knows this is her last chance. If she doesn't figure out what happened to Cassie eighteen years ago, it may be Evelyn's turn to vanish without a trace.

Evelyn Baine knew how to think like a killer.

In fact, she was damn good at it. Serial killers, arsonists, bomb-makers, child abductors, terrorists—she'd crawled around in all of their twisted minds. She'd learned their fantasies, figured out their next moves and chased them down.

But no matter how many she found, there were always more.

Even before she stepped inside the unmarked building in Aquia, Virginia, where the FBI hid its Behavioral Analysis Unit, Evelyn knew the requests for profiles on her desk had grown overnight. It was inevitable.

She strode through the entrance and a blast of air-conditioning chased away the mid-June heat, raising goose bumps on her arms. As she headed toward the drab gray bull pen packed with cubicles, the scent of old coffee filled her nostrils. The whiteboard near the front of the bull pen was covered in her boss's distinctive scrawl—notes on a case. They hadn't been there when she'd left last night.

The handful of criminal investigative analysts who'd arrived before her—or hadn't gone home—gazed at her with bloodshot eyes and quizzical expressions. But it had been a full two weeks since she'd been cleared to come back to work. A full two weeks for them to get used to her not being the first agent through the door in the morning and the last to leave at night.

A full two weeks for her to get used to it, too. But it still felt unnatural.

Slipping into the comfort of her cubicle, she set her briefcase on the floor, hung her suit jacket over the back of her chair and slid her SIG Sauer P228 off her hip and into a drawer. Then she looked at the case files stacked on her desk. Yep, the pile had definitely grown. And the message light on her phone blinked frantically.

Guilt swirled through her, rising up like a sandstorm. If she'd stayed an extra few hours yesterday evening, an extra few hours the evening before, she might've gotten through another couple of files. But she knew from a year of ten-hour days, seven days a week, that cloistering herself in her cubicle wouldn't stop the cases from coming.

It would only stop her from having a life outside the office. And after she'd almost been killed by the serial killer she'd been profiling a month ago, that had become important.

So, she shoved the guilt back, dropped into her chair and dialed her voice mail. There were three requests for follow-up on cases she'd profiled, a pretty typical way to start her morning. She jotted them down and kept going.

The next call was from the FBI's Employee Assistance Program, reminding her that the Bureau had psychologists she could talk to about the case that had nearly killed her, and had claimed another agent's life. Evelyn ground her teeth and deleted it. She had her own psychology degree, and her professional opinion was that she was doing just fine. She was about to hang up when she realized there was one more message.

"I'm looking for Evelyn Baine." The voice was vaguely familiar and every word vibrated with tension. "The Evelyn Baine from Rose Bay. This is Julie Byers. Cassie's mom."

Whatever she said next was drowned out under a sudden ringing in Evelyn's ears, under a bittersweet flood of memories. Cassie, the little girl next door who'd come over the day Evelyn had moved in with her grandparents and announced they were going to be best friends. The girl who hadn't given a damn that Evelyn was the only person in town—including Evelyn's grandparents—who wasn't white, at least not entirely white. And eighteen years ago, in Rose Bay, that had mattered.

Cassie had been Evelyn's first real friend, a symbol of everything that was supposed to change in her life when she came to stay with her grandparents.

For two years, she and Cassie had been inseparable. And then one night, Cassie had disappeared from her bed. In her place, her abductor had left his calling card, a macabre nursery rhyme.

Cassie had never come home. Julie Byers calling now, eighteen years later, could only mean one thing. They'd found her.

Pressure tightened around her heart. Evelyn had worked enough child abduction cases in her year at BAU to know the statistics. After eighteen years, Cassie wasn't going to be found alive. But she didn't want to snuff out the flicker of hope that just wouldn't die.

With unsteady hands, Evelyn called her voice mail again and skipped through to the last message, to hear what she knew Julie Byers was going to say. Cassie was dead.

She clutched her hands tightly together as the message replayed. "I'm looking for Evelyn Baine. The Evelyn Baine from Rose Bay. This is Julie Byers. Cassie's mom."

In the pause that followed, tears clouded her vision. Her whole body tensed as she waited for Julie Byers to destroy the dream she'd had for eighteen years. The dream of one day seeing Cassie again.

"Please call me, Evelyn."

Her body deflated and she dropped her head to the desk.

"Evelyn?"

Willing her pain not to show on her face, she turned around. "Greg," she croaked.

Greg Ibsen was the closest thing she had to a partner at BAU. Even if she'd sounded normal, he was the only one in the office who might have seen through it. As he stepped into her cubicle, worry brimmed in his soft brown eyes.

"What happened? Are you okay?"

She stared up at him, trying to get control of herself. But her eyes kept losing focus, and her heart still tripped erratically.

"Come on." Greg set his briefcase next to hers and took her arm, pulling her out of her seat.

"Hang on," she croaked, jotting down the number from her voice mail.

She spun back, her eyes on the loud plaid tie someone—probably his daughter, Lucy—had paired with his somber blue suit. Then Greg was propelling her into an empty interagency coordination room.

He guided her into a chair, then shut the door and leaned against it. "What's wrong?"

Everything was wrong. She'd joined the FBI, joined BAU, to find Cassie, but she'd never told anyone at the Bureau about her past. Except Kyle McKenzie.

Kyle was an operator with the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team. Since HRT and BAU worked closely together, she'd met him the day she joined BAU. And for a whole year, she'd managed to resist his incessant flirting, assuming it was all a joke. Until last month.

Last month, she'd acted on the attraction. And everything between them had changed. Despite the fact that he'd been called away on a case too soon for them to figure out where their relationship was going, she wished he was here. Wished she could lean into his strong arms while she called Cassie's mom.

But Kyle wasn't here. He was somewhere not far from where she'd grown up, on a mission she didn't "need to know" anything about. And the nature of his job meant she had no idea when he'd be back.

Greg had trained her and he'd become a good friend. Hell, he was her emergency contact, because she didn't have any real family left except her grandma, and these days, Evelyn took care of her.

A month ago, Evelyn would have pretended to be fine. She would have brushed off Greg's concern and gone back to work. But she was trying to make a change in her life. So, she told him, "When I was twelve, my best friend, Cassie, disappeared. She was never found." It had been the driving force in her life for eighteen years, the one thing she'd been willing to sacrifice everything else for. "And now…"

She squeezed her eyes shut. She'd always wanted closure, always needed to know what had happened. But if Cassie was dead, she suddenly, desperately, wanted to stay ignorant.

Greg's hand rested on her arm, and when she opened her eyes he was kneeling next to her, his gaze steady and compassionate. The gaze of someone who'd sat beside too many victims and always known the right thing to say.

And maybe, more than anyone, he'd know what she should do now. He was practiced at comforting survivors—his son, Josh, had watched his birth father kill his mother before Josh had been adopted by Greg and his wife.

"Cassie's mom wants me to call her." The next words didn't want to come, but she forced them out. "It must be because they finally found her body." Saying it out loud felt like ripping a bandage from a wound it had covered so long it had grown into the skin.

Sorrow folded into the creases beside Greg's fawn-colored eyes. "I'm so sorry, Evelyn." He squeezed her hand, those gentle eyes searching hers. "Eighteen years is a long time. Too long for there to be any good outcome."

He was right, of course. If Cassie had still been alive, what hell might she have endured for the past eighteen years?

A rush of images stampeded through her head from a child abduction case she'd profiled in her first month at BAU. She'd gone to the scene to advise HRT when they went into the suspect's house. She'd watched Kyle kick the door in. She could still smell the cordite from the flash-bang, still feel the tension, the restrained hope that maybe, just maybe, they'd find the boy alive.

She'd waited and waited until finally they'd come out. First, two HRT agents leading the suspect, naked, handcuffed and swearing. Then Kyle carrying the boy, miraculously still breathing. Someone had wrapped an FBI jacket around his violated body, but the anguish in his eyes—seven hundred days past terror—had burrowed deep into her soul and she'd known. He hadn't really come out alive.

Greg's voice brought her back to the present. "You were too young to have saved Cassie, Evelyn. But she brought you to us. And to all the victims you did bring home."

"I don't want to hear there's no more hope," she admitted.

"I know."

Greg didn't let go of her hand as she pulled out her phone and stared at it, not wanting to dial.

"You need to get it over with. It's not going to get any easier, and waiting won't change anything. You can do this."

Evelyn nodded, tried to prepare herself. She dialed the number fast, before she could change her mind. Some cowardly part of her hoped Julie wouldn't pick up, but before the first ring ended, she did.

"Mrs. Byers? It's Evelyn Baine." Her voice sounded strange, too high-pitched and winded, as if she'd just run the Marine training course over at Quantico.

"Evelyn." Julie's voice betrayed that she'd been crying.

Dread intensified, and slivers of ice raced along Evelyn's spine.

"I'm so glad I found you." Julie's voice evened out. "I heard you joined the FBI."

She had? Evelyn had left Rose Bay at seventeen, after her grandma had gotten sick and her mom had suddenly shown up again. She'd never gone back and she hadn't talked to anyone from Rose Bay in more than a decade.

"Yes," Evelyn managed. Get on with it, she wanted to say. Just tell me Cassie's dead.

A sob welled up in her throat and Evelyn clamped her jaw tight, holding it back.

"You probably figured after all this time I'd only be calling. Well, it's about Cassie."

Evelyn's fingers started to tingle and she realized she'd squeezed Greg's hand so tight both of their knuckles had gone bloodless. But she couldn't seem to loosen her grip.

"You found her?"

"No. But the person who took Cassie is back."

Two

The Nursery Rhyme Killer was back.

The words repeated themselves in her head the way gunfire echoed after the shooting stopped, but she couldn't make sense of them. Eighteen years of silence and then another abduction? It wasn't completely unprecedented, but it was really rare.

Eighteen years ago, before kidnapping Cassie, her abductor had taken two other girls, from two other communities in South Carolina. No bodies had ever been found, but the press had called their abductor the Nursery Rhyme Killer.

After Cassie went missing, all of Rose Bay had been terrified, expecting him to strike again. But he never did. The trail had been cold ever since.

And Evelyn had waited eighteen years for the chance to investigate. Determination put speed in her steps as she strode through the bull pen toward her boss's office.

"Attitude incoming," Kendall White singsonged as she marched past his cubicle. "I knew that laid-back thing you had going for the past two weeks was just a ruse," he called after her.

She ignored him, but something uncomfortable wormed around in her gut. In her year at BAU, her work ethic had been intense and nonstop. The past two weeks had probably seemed like an anomaly to her colleagues, but she'd intended to make a real change.

It wasn't going to happen now. Not with the Nursery Rhyme Killer grabbing new victims. She pushed open her boss's door without knocking. "Dan, I need to go to Rose Bay, South Carolina."

Dan Moore, the assistant special agent in charge who ran BAU, lifted his frustrated gaze to hers and sighed. "Damn it." Then he said into the phone at his ear, "I think I know who has it. I'm going to have to call you back."

He hung up the phone and then barked, "Shut the door."

Shit. She should have knocked. But Dan wasn't exactly her biggest fan on the best day, so she tried not to let his reaction worry her.

When she'd closed the door and turned back to him, Dan said, "That was Chief Lamar from Rose Bay."

Relief swept through her. If Rose Bay was formally requesting a profiler, it would be a lot easier to get herself assigned. "I already know the case. I—"

"Because you requested the case file under false pretenses?" Dan interrupted, his cheeks darkening to an angry, mottled red. "Chief Lamar was calling to find out if the FBI had come up with anything on the abductor since we'd asked for a copy of the file a month ago. I was in the process of telling him we'd never requested that file when you barged in."

He slapped the desk hard, making her jerk backward. "What the hell are you doing, Evelyn? Assigning yourself cases without the Bureau's knowledge or approval? Are you trying to get yourself investigated by OPR again?"

Evelyn stood a little straighter and prepared for a fight. The Office of Professional Responsibility hadn't really investigated her, but they had reviewed the case she'd profiled last month that had cost another agent his life and almost took hers, too. She'd never been in trouble before that case. It hadn't occurred to her that requesting Cassie's case file could put a stain on her FBI personnel file.

When her grandma had let slip after seventeen years of silence that the note left by Cassie's abductor had said he'd taken her, too, she'd needed to know. And the case file had told her it hadn't been her grandma's dementia talking.

Eighteen years ago, she'd somehow escaped dying alongside Cassie.

Evelyn reached a hand up to smooth hair she knew was tucked neatly into its usual bun. "I had to find out what really happened. This is why I joined the Bureau in the first place."

Dan rubbed his hands over his temples, sending the hair on the sides of his head—the only place it grew—shooting outward. "This is that case?"

He hadn't realized? She knew he was aware of her past. Having been best friends with a kidnap victim and being so intensely invested in the case had almost prevented her from being accepted into BAU. But apparently Dan either hadn't looked into the case too closely or had forgotten the details. He'd been a lawyer before joining the Bureau, and since he could easily spout court case details from thirty years ago, she suspected it was the former.

A Taught and Thrilling Mystery That *WILL* Suck You In
By Charlie Sweatpants
"Vanished" starts fast with tantalizing clues, promising leads, and a ticking clock that keeps you turning the pages. Just like in "Hunted" (the first one in the series), Heiter perfectly balances modern, CSI-style investigation with action, a dash of romance, and a mystery that keeps you guessing right to the end. All great thrillers have an "Aha!" moment that makes them so much fun, and the one in "Vanished" is superb.

Smexy Books Review: Vanished by Elizabeth Heiter
By Tori @SmexyBooks
Evelyn Blaine lost her best friend, Cassie, eighteen years ago when she was abducted out of her backyard and never seen again. The only clue was a message left in the form of a nursery rhyme. The message also hinted at Evelyn’s possible abduction. Cassie was never found and soon Evelyn moved away. After years of silence, another girl is missing and all signs point to the return of the Nursery Rhyme killer.

Now an FBI Profiler, Evelyn is headed back to her hometown of Rose Bay, South Carolina, determined to investigate what happened to her best friend and discover if this is the same killer or a copycat. As more girls disappear, the idyllic town becomes a breeding ground of hate and violence. Tempers flare as Evelyn digs deeper into the town and it’s residents; determined to stop the killer before they stop her…permanently.

Vanished is book two in Elizabeth Heiter’s suspenseful Profiler series. A dark engaging mystery suspense with a very low-key romance. Verbose characters and a seasoned storyline provides us with a multitude of deceptive twists and turns. Using the heroine as the tether, Heiter alternates between the past and the present to reveal the motivations behind the heroine’s fanatical need to solve a series of kidnappings that has left her and her hometown scarred. The story does start out little slow as the storyline is set up and needed background given. Heiter shows considerable knowledge of procedural investigative work as she submerges us into the investigation in a clear and concise manner. The heavy hand on the emotional aspects of the investigators gives the story a sense of realism and depth as she explores the long-term ramifications of childhood trauma from multiple viewpoints. The running dialog between the characters is smooth and fast paced, though I wish we had been given some clear answers to the underlying tension that is felt between the heroine and some of the other characters.

Our heroine is an interesting mixture of contrasts. Evelyn is an intelligent, tenacious, strong-willed woman, yet there is a strong mixture of vulnerability and guilt that rides her. She became a FBI profiler because of her past and this particular case is personal for her. Personal to the point where she is willing to break the rules and endanger her own life to find answers. At times I was irritated with her only because I felt her emotional connection to the case overruled her good sense at times. Certain aspects have her running around in circles, so intent on finding the killer, she disregards what I felt were very important clues.

The secondary characters are as complex as our protagonist. Each one has a personal stake in the case and they all add personality, drama, and insight to the story. The dynamics between the characters are complicated as the past intertwines with the present. The cast provides a solid foundation in which to give our heroine a frame from which to work and build from. The villain(s) of the story are a compelling study in deception, deceit, and small town prejudice. I had some ideas to whom the killer was but was never able to verify. Heiter did a good job of tossing red herrings into your path, misleading you from page one.

There is a small romance that intertwines into the story. Those who read Haunted or the subsequent spin offs will recognise fellow agent Kyle MacKenzie. It is considerably less involved than the main plot but Heiter uses their scenes together to help give Evelyn an unconnected emotional outlet. The unvoiced sexual tension between the two agents builds slowly, giving us peeks into a possible future. Heiter doesn’t make their relationship a competing subplot but does intertwine it with the main storyline; allowing it to merge naturally and enhance the ending.

The ending comes at the reader hard, fast, and is a little overwhelming as Evelyn makes the final connection between the past and present; placing herself in the killer’s sights. A bit of an information dump tells us the whole sordid tale in one felled swoop, not giving us much time to absorb what is happening. Loose ends are wrapped up, questions answered, and the wrongs of the past are made right and finally laid to rest. Mystery suspense fans will enjoy the deception of a convoluted mystery combined with a complex and complicated heroine. You do not have to read book one-Haunted-in order to understand and connect with this book. Heiter does an admirable job of setting up the new storyline(s) and integrating the necessary background information to ensure the reader is brought up to speed.

Protagonist too delicate
By HaviLover
I enjoyed Elizabeth Heiter's previous book, however, Vanished simply didn't add up for me. Evelyn, the FBI profiler, is suppose to be a strong character and, consequently, I expect her to be. In Vanished, if she wasn't sobbing, fainting or throwing up, she was on the verge of doing one or the other. Understandably, she is emotional given the circumstances, but she's an FBI profiler, so she's been through training, psychological as well as physical, she simply can't be this fragile. When she returns, please make her act like the character she is suppose to be. I had to skip a lot of this book just to finish it.

A sparkling collection of short stories some of which feature Inspector Sloan and his sidekick, Crosby. Others feature an interesting character called Henry Tyler who works for the Foreign Office in the nineteen thirties and who regularly visits his sister, Wendy in Calleshire. I enjoyed them all and would be hard pushed to single out my favourites though I did particularly like the second story in the collection - 'The Hard Lesson' - about the stand-in teacher who unexpectedly manages to capture the class's attention.

Another favourite was 'A Managed Retreat' - revenge at its most delightful. 'In the Family Way' was interesting for its family dynamics and 'The Language of Flowers' was extremely clever too. Altogether this is a marvellous collection of stories with plenty of twists just at the last moment when you think you've worked out what is going in.

If you enjoy crime short stories then I would recommend this book.

Sadly Disappointing
By M from California
I usually love Catherine Aird, & I expected to love this book too, so this was really disappointing. I found the stories to be mostly boring with only a few Sloan & Crosby stories, one which was just Sloan & Racer talking. A lot of the stories weren't even mysteries, they felt like a chapter from another book rather than a short story on their own. There were also 3 or 4 that included a lot of incomprehensible code breaking. I was definitely expecting a lot better.

Life is a Mystery
By Janet Nail
Catherine Aird has done it again! Every story in this collection is intelligent and stylish, with endings that are often surprising. The period stories are just as exciting as the contemporary. My greatest compliment for Catherine Aird is that she never underestimates the intelligence of the reader. A real winner.

Rumpole and the Golden Thread, by John Mortimer

In this engaging collection of stories, Rumpole continues to deftly juggle the vagaries of law, the ambiguities of crime, and the contradictions of the human heart in his death-defying performances on behalf of justice. The irreverent, claret-swilling, poetry-spouting barrister takes on suspect connoisseurs in the art world, journeys deep into the throbbing heart of Africa, dabbles in some feminist politics, decides the countryside is a very dangerous place, and incurs the wrath of his wife, She Who Must Be Obeyed.

Golden Laughter in This Great Golden Book
By A. Hackworth
Mortimer is a genius at writing because he makes Rumpole so real and memorable. And, how could anyone forget his wife, She Who Must Be Obeyed? My father, a lawyer, introduced me to Rumpole when it was a series on tv. I loved the TV Rumpole, but the books are even better! If you want a humorous, entertaining, delightful book about the English barristers and courts, this book is the right one. I loved this book and want more just like it!

Another great read about the skill, wit, caustic and irreverant QC, his bumbling confreres, She Who Must Be Obeyed, and a strong statement on English society.

Wonderful!
By Shirley Schwartz
Rumpole stories are like getting in touch with old friends after you've read a few of them. There is no ficitional character like the curmudgeonly Old Bailey hack, and we get to see him in six more wonderful stories in this book. The stories are, of course, all excellent, but I always pick a favourite and in this one it's "Rumpole and the Female of the Species". Rumpole's dry wit and acerbic tongue is at its best in this story as he is defending one of his old Timson gang of criminals, as well as trying to get a young female barrister accepted into Chambers. These stories never get stale, and they are all little gems in their own right. I highly recomeend that those who love to read and to laugh read Mortimer's long selection of stories about Horace Rumpole.

Art for the Mind!
By D. Dobler
There are so many things about this book and this series that stand out. Each book can stand in its own right, but blends perfectly within the ARKANE series. She never varies from the main premise of ARKANE's duties, but includes new angles and dynamics of plot, geography, religion, and character relationships that keeps this series from becoming mundane! She seamlessly weaves archeology, geography, culture (both historical and contemporary) that makes the books come alive! I've been to Europe and to some of the countries that she references in the books. I've also studied some of the religions that she weaves within her stories. I am completely entranced by how she continues to show respect for all of them, but is edgy enough to make me slightly uncomfortable.

Add to all that her dedication to making each character a deep, very human, and very believable person and you have the recipe for a fantastic journey. These books are truly art for the mind and I am enjoying every aspect of them.

Gates of Hell definitely favorite ARKANE thriller
By Donna Young
While I have enjoyed all of Joanna Penn's ARKANE thrillers, Gates of Hell is definitely my favorite. Penn takes religious symbology, myth and factual history to weave a story of intrigue, action and suspense that captivates and excites. Morgan Sierra and Jake Timber are back together to stop a Kabbalist from finding the key that opens the gates of hell allowing darkness to take over the world. Their first clue comes from a letter from her deceased father who was a member of a group of Kabbalists called the Remnant, who for generations have protected the key and kept its location secret. Danger lurks as Morgan and Jake try to stay one step ahead in the search around the globe for the key. This book does not disappoint as Joanna Penn has once again hit the mark.

Not since Stephen King's It, has a book scared me this much
By Gillian Felix
J.F. Penn did it again with another thrill ride. The thing I love about the Arkane series is that it takes you to places that most of us will never have the chance to visit. From swimming in the dead sea to the narrow streets of Safed. J.F. made me visit those places in mind with rich visual descriptions to the smell and sound of the locations. I think if I were to go there one day it would be like I was there already.

Another thing I am hooked on is the characters, Morgan Sierra is at it again, blowing up things and saving her men. I love that she is so strong in her convictions, she is a great role model of strength and determination for women. Yes I know she's fictional but after going through her journeys with her I felt like I could do anything. Jake Timber disappointed me a bit because he was more of a hinderance than a help in this one. However nothing was lost in the story because of it.

Not since I read IT by Stephen King as a child, that a book has scared me like Gates of Hell. In Gates of Hell, J.F. explored the dark side of religion as she does in most if not all of the Arkane series, but this one scared the crap out of me because she explored a religion that I had a very vague idea about. She had me wondering how much of this is really fiction. The research and time that she put into creating the books in the series definitely pays off and I for one really appreciate it.

From the first chapter in the book I was hooked and I knew it was going to be a good one. Gates of Hell was in interesting read, it had me devouring every page as I am dropped into the scenes with the characters.

I am looking forward to reading all the books in the series. This book is best suited for readers who enjoy reading about strong female characters, adventure, monster under the bed kind of thing, where reality and fiction is blurred. Don't expect romance this is not that kind of book, you can feel the attraction between the characters but they never go there. With all the adventure going on there's just no room for it.
